Rob_one from South Africa Hangs At Carfax

Name: Rob_one
Reppin': Johannesburg (Jozi) South Africa
Favorite Spot: Carfax, Bassline
This city is generally recognized as one of the most buzzing places in Africa, and Newtown in the city centre is the place to go. Carfax, housed in an old warehouse underneath the highway, is one of the best clubs in the country, as is the nearby Bassline.
We've got some great live hip-hop in this country, and these two clubs are where the best artists always perform. In fact, any genre goes, not just hip-hop. Other places like the Horror cafe nearby provide some alternative jams, while you can catch huge festivals every so often in Mary Fitzgerald Square with the magnificent Nelson Mandela Bridge as a backdrop.

Check this I have been living in South Africa for about a year now. I was living in St. Louis (MIDWEST STANDUP) and all I can say is JOZI represents like crazy. Hiphop in South Africa is very much EASTCOAST. In Africa the dirty south thing hasn't caught on yet. Hiphop artist here emulate artists like, Common, Talib, Mos Def, Dead Prez, etc. There are quite a number of good rappers but there is always a tendency to use thousands of metaphors and bite off USA rappers. Also some artists who rap in local languages bite off chucks of say Biggie's lyrics and use them in their own language. Other than these small issues the hiphop community here is growing.
Still in Johannesburg, local HOUSE music is still KING. Artists that incorporate RAP in the house music seem to be doing well. Local hiphop sales are still low compared to other genres.
ONE BIG ASS DISSAPPOINTMENT FOR TODAY.
Snoop Dogg was supposed to perform in JoBurg this evening, but NO his ass got arrested in London just before he got on a flight here. Something to do with his entourage getting into a fight with British Ariways personal and the police. I mean come on now SNOOP.
So now the concert only has SEAN PAUL, MARIO and PHARELL. I mean Sean Paul is cool but corny ass mario and pharell ...the show is OVER..............
DANA in New Jersey - Holler at the boy if you want to come to South Africa and have a good time.

Hey Rob-
Thanks for that bit of information regarding South Africa is interesting to see how Hip Hop has influenced the world.
We need more encouraging stories coming from South Africa, because the injustice of aparthied and economic strife for Africans has shadowed South African as a bad place to visit.Good news on South Africa!

What up Rob_one,
Glad to you put SA out there and let people know it has a scene. I have heard some about the artist and scene there. I heard Skwatta Kamp is huge over there in the scene? Check out this article comparing the South African scene to the scene in the US.

LOL 12 years ago they hated it.....NOW they love it. Only a trend is what it appears to be, just like other forms of music we created. No disrespect but my fellow board members this Rap/HIP HOP sh%t is destroying your mental.Just do your research on black black business from the early 60's to the present.we were better off then we have declined to .4 of americas businesses.N the biggest problem is these so called Rappers and other thomases don't give back to build communities.N they got you brain washed to think they care about you.In guess what in return you wanna be like them. How do you explain the fitted cap,the white tee and do rag your wearing....not to mention the record label you want to own
take it from i live in the hood and was born in the 80's so dont give me any your on some tom sh*t
let's get out of the matrix
YOU DONT HAVE TO BELIEVE ME JUST LOOK IN YOUR HOOD AND SEE IF ANYTHING HAS CHANGED BESIDES THE NEW DRUG STORE.
