Dirty, David Banner, Mr. Bigg, UGK (including Bun B as a solo artist) Eightball and MJG, Kilo Ali, Soulja Slim, Lil Wayne, Missy Elliot, Goodie Mob, Outkast, Field Mob, Lawn Boyz, Pastor Troy (ol skool), Trick even spit about the struggle and there are countless underground artist who make more than party house music. i personally think the d4l song is wack as hell, but i can see why some people would like.

i think a point that may or may not have been made in this discussion (too many posts for me to read through; and let's face it, some of the discussion is unproductive) is that the beauty of hip hop music is that people can listen to it for different reasons. some of us 'heads' need to understand that the majority of hip hop listeners may not feel as passionate about it as other listeners.

it's ok to have a club track here and there, but i think the problem is that those that control the mass communication aspect of hip hop (viacom, clear channel, labels, etc; remember when WE used to own hip hop) are only checking for those candy-pop songs, which do have their respective places in the music industry.

the bigger issue is that what we see on t.v. and hear on the radio as it pertains to hip hop music is that the corporations have successfully detached our music from our movement... how taboo is it these days for a person (rap star and otherwise) to be labeled conscious or pro-black?

think how unsuccessful the movements of the 60s and 70s would have been if the protest music was replaced by all artists that sounded like Elvis (one of the first record label 'bitches').

remember when P.E. had us all rocking African medallions and actively combatting the crack corruption in our hoods? now the crack epidemic is glamourized by rappers who claim to be deep in the game. is this by coincidence or by design?

so in conclusion 'laffy taffy' may be what we want, but songs by artists who at least attempt to chronicle our struggle and improve upon the conditions of our hoods is what we need.
