Little Brother, Durham, North Carolina

little brother.jpg

Name: Phonte from rap group, Little Brother

Reppin': Durham, North Carolina

Favorite spot: Mad Wax Records, Four-Four Records, Talk of the Town

You can check out Mad Wax Records in Durham, that's one spot where my man DJ Mad runs things. It's good for underground hip-hop, classic ish, breaks, whatever, they got it over there. Also, you can check out Four-Four Records in Raleigh, that's my man DJ Merlin and DJ Mooney, they run that spot. They also carry a lot of underground, break beats and whatever.

That's pretty much it as far as music. I don't really do a lot of clubbin' so you know, but you might want to check out Talk of the Town, that's where older folks go. They have open mic nights and people are up there on some amateur night stuff, but that ish can be comedy, for real, comedy.

Pooh kept the fire burning and Joe Scudda blazed the ending. Big ups to Little Brother..anxiously awaiting The Minstrel Show!!!

J-League has all the real hedz noddin'. I've been buyin' up everything I can get my hands on; LB, Big Pooh, Foreign Exchange, A-Team and LEGACY. I haven't bought up everything a crew put out since Rawkus and BCC (and Sean P, BDI and Smif-n-Wessun will put Boot Camp on everyone's radar). Keep it real, keep it live.

Posted by: shamrock at September 2, 2005 4:34 PM

open mic at the talk IS pure comedy for real. durham is my adopted hometown, and while it has its troubles i really enjoy living here. there's alot to do, depending on what youre in to.the music scene is good, getting better all the time.

LB has got to be the dopest "authentic" hip hop group out right now. To me, Atuhentic hip hop is a combination of creativity, dope ass lyrics, and production that kills with or without lyrics. These niggaz got it all and they're funny too....and..and that nigga Phonte can sang. What more do they need? A tigt crew behind them. Oh! ya mean they got that too?

Little Brother is of da hook & im glad to see some responces from people who know wat real HIP HOP is 1luv

Dis is Tavatos reppin SOUTH AFRICA

I love LB and Justus League, got every single joint they dropped, all the bootlegs everything including minstrel show.

however im so dissapointed with the minstrel show, im wondering what the hell happened?

LB was my fav group and i guess i figured they could possibly top the chitlin circuit, or their solo efforts... or maybe 9th could drop more constant fire like he did on splash or kaze's album..

but nah this shit is mediocre 9th.. lovin it and maybe one other track are the straight bangers.. and the rest sound like filler.

whats up with that?

and why is the media all up on their jock for this album? place it against any other album they've released, the bootleg mixtapes or whatever else and it just flops in there as a mediocre one.

granted its worth a listen but not worth a cop, and not even a reccomendation from a really hardcore LB fan.

Posted by: hav at September 5, 2005 11:18 PM

Little Brother is one of the illest underground hip hop groups around. I'm from Louisville ,Ky (The ville Baby) and I feel the NC brothers like no other. Phonte is crushing Mc's right now. 9th wonder is taking off where pete rock left us in the 90's. That Big Pooh album was ill too, LB is the best in the game man, I don't care what nobody say man.

Posted by: keino at September 6, 2005 12:29 AM

Little Brother is the TRUTH, long time coming, but I think the timing is GREAT. NC stand up ...with groups like Little Brother and Fam 1st (out of Burlington) the world will see that we are more than just Petey Pablo. We need to see the Fam 1st and Little Brother combo...that would be HOT!

Posted by: DJ Shilo at September 12, 2005 7:00 PM

Big up to 9th and LB for puttin Durham on the map. 919 representa til i die, ruff Raleigh all day. And i cant even diss that nigga petey because i daped him up in the blockbuster, one love.

Posted by: james okonkwo at September 13, 2005 9:18 PM

Man..my cuz turned me on to LB while on the way to W. VA in '03. The Listening was some ill shit full of classic joints. We bumped that shit for about 3/4 hrs str8 on the way, and even more on the way back to TX. Niggahs done slept on ya'll too long. The show in Dallas was off the chain. Keep that underground Tribe, De La, Heiro sound going ya'll. People catch on to the dopest shit years after they've been putting it down.

Posted by: TakDat at September 14, 2005 6:20 PM

You three are amazing! It's so good to see someone from NC get put on. I'm from Oxford, NC but I'm going to school at NC State...please keep doing what you doing..and stay well!

The Boston show at the Paradise Club was ridiculously dope. LB is the truth.

Posted by: POPS at September 19, 2005 4:48 PM

Yo, LB is the truth for real...Big Pooh; my cousin says he used to play AAU ball wit you, he's from Zeblin (Duane Parham)...I been askin him if he knew LB since he moved to DC, but he said he never heard of them...that was until he found out his best friend rhymes with ya'll (Mario/O'dass) Keep the good music coming man...That "All For You" and "Slow Down" are serious off the Minstrel Show...shout out to Percy Miracles too! LOL Anyways, look forward to seeing ya'll in B-More on Saturday (24) and DC's Black cat on the 25th......O...my folks still got them Jordans, if y'll need some more when in Chocolate City..tell Mario to holla at DUane!
