Dogg, no one was trippin back when I was growin up in Dallas when Biggie was huge and the Infamous LP came out. Enter the 36 Chambers was gettin play in Texas also.So did Raekwon's first LP. But at the same time, we was playin our shit too.The south wasn't even thought of back then unless it was Outkast. Now the tables are turned and the south is hot and niggaz cant stomach it. I agree with Royal. The south used to have some lyrical rappers in the game(Scarface, Mac- from No Limit, Lil Keke, Devin the Dude and a few others). Now, it seems like the south are just in the game for a hot single to blow on, then the rest of the album is whatever. Not to say that there hasn't been some East Coast artist like that b/c there has been, but everything from "Laffy Taffy" to "Lean wit it, Rock wit it" to Grillz are one hit tracks. With the exception of Chamillionaire, Lil Flip, UGK and TI. The present Southern industry is a MTV balloon ready to pop!

Ghost is the only N.Y. M.C. who keeps that '88 style relevent. His slang can be decifered if you pay attention. Tush was the RECORD company required club song. Ghost makes concept albums. His last album he DECONSTRUCTED the "popular' sped-up soul sample lane and spit over ENTIRE tracks. Alot of people didn't get it. He DOES have the authority to police this bullshit we consider Hip-Hop music just anyone does who was there from the beginning. The torch must be passed properly. Yes, there is room for evolution in the music aspect of Hip-Hop but we don't have to except everthing that comes out because if it's bullshit we should be able to say it's bullshit. We must police ourselves and show these young bucks what constitutes Hip-Hop music. We do need more scratched choruses because D.J.ing is becoming a lost art. We do need more introspective, complex and dope rhyme styles. The sad part is, when we get that, we automatically classify it as "conscious' or "backpack" lyricism. Was Rakim's "Lyrics of Fury" backpack style? Was KRS-One's "Poetry" backpack? I'm looking back as a point of reference. There is no comparision in the complexity of rhymes from then until now. We as a culture have dumbed down our lyrics and the culture is worse for it. It's not about where you from because Scarface, Ice Cube, Magic Mike, Saafir, Paris, Juvenile, G.U.R.U., The Coup, M.C. Ren, Ed O.G., Black Thought, Tupac, Rass Kass, O.C. Pharoah Monch,T.I., Luda,and OutKast will spit it. Ghost is allowed to call it as he sees it.

I was at the show in D.C. and Ghost wasn't dissing the south. He was talking about mainstream but he's been talking about that for years. Like he said B4 "we got classics and they aint even playing our shit". You don't hear Wu-Tang on the radio. What Ghost was trying to do(but didn't do a good job)was show the difference between a rapper and a MC. I've been buildin' on this for a minute now, I'm talkin' about years now. It seems that there are a hell of alot of rappers in hip-hop but a few MC's. That D4L laffy taffy sh*t is horrible and will never play in my V but it is(hard for me to say this) hip-hop. What Ghost didn't do was refer back to the orign of hip-hop, it started with the party-havin-fun music from rappers Africa-Bambada and The Surgarhill Gang. Do your research, late 70's early 80's and you will see. The first DJ was Kool Herc. The first MC's were Curtis Blow, Kool Moe'D, and KRS-One. Remember theres a difference, a rapper rhymes along with a beat saying(what you would expect them to say) the first word that comes to mind without any clever word play. A MC rhymes unconcious on a beat with such creativity and trickery that when you hear them spit your brain can't keep up because you still tryin' to process what he said a couple of bar ago. With a rapper you can predict what thier next word, line, or even bar will be b/f they even say it. With a MC you can't necessarally predict thier next word, If you come close in words its said in a totally innavative way that you didn't expect. Example how many times have you heard rappers rap about getting money and drinking on liquir? Well thats exactly how rappers rhyme were a MC like Nas says "My team lust papes sippin' on crush grapes." Do you see the difference in creativity??? Jada Kiss once said "Poppin' crystal freakin' the three-quater reptile." A rapper would say "Drinking crystal wearing my gators." I hope ya'll see my point b/c I'm going easy on it, I could quote some of the best to ever grace the mic(Rakim,Big L,Pun,Canibus,Em) and blow your mind. Forgive my man Tony Starks(who I consider a MC no doubt)I know what he was trying to do and now hopefully you do too. Real talk Ghost is one of the greatest. Im not hating on the south but they do have a lot of Artist that make less than good music but there are a few down there (lil wayne, TI, scarface def)
2. Everyone talks about hustling on an album. Even Kweli mentions it not that he actually did though he has said he sold weed in private school.
3.The south got it poppin a little now but the best rappers presently are not from the south for example 50, kanye. Nas still got fire regardless. Jeezy admits to not being a rapper and truthfully he aint shit sorry. and he still is under 1.5 million records for the people who think going platinum means your "nice"

p.s. who has ever been inspired by a southern rapper? Only a couple of them have been internally know more than 3 years

It really ain't about north and south, east and west, it's about records that suck and records that don't suck. My personal take on the song Laffy Taffy is that it sux. I gives a damn where they are from, the song is just horrible. If you come out with a Casio beat and your first bar includes the lyrics, "I'm Mr. Bubble gum, I'm Mr. Chico Stick..." you suck ass. And I'm not saying that you have to have the lyrical skill of Nas or Jay Z to have a hot joint out there. Not everybody's going to be a super lyricist but Laffy Taffy is too far below the bar for me.

I grew up in NC and live in Atlanta now so my thoughts on that song have nothing to do with where I'm from.

I don't think anybody listens to d4l for lyrics in the first place, so attacking them from that standpoint is pointless. They make songs to have fun with. You can hate on the beats all you want but the fact of the matter is, ol' boi used the little tools he had and actually came up with something that's successful, so respect his hustle. Stop trying to knock the food off the next man's plate just cuz your piece of steak ain't as big as his.
The whole thing about him talking about how ny started the grills thing is a subliminal diss to the south, point blank. Why would you bring it up unless you're upset about something? That is the only comment that makes me think he's kinda got some "ana" in him for the down bottom.
Remember, some of hip hop's earliest classics were "party records".(ie. Rapper's Delight) You wouldn't call that the most thought provoking record or say it isn't "real hip hop", but you can say it serves its purpose; so does like Laffy Taffy. Fuck it if you don't like it. Rap is like high school now, too much "I don't like him/her bullshit". I got most of Wu Tang albums and even the solo ones. However, Ghostface's comments on D4L are personal. One thing that he must realize is when he disses D4L, he may be dissing some of the more quality artist in the South. How does he know that some of the most respected Southern lyricist who is cool with them guys. My personal opinion on D4L doesn't matter and quite frankly, neither does his. Ghost has a history of doing these types of things, remember the quote in the Source about the whole East vs West ("They trying to take over!"). It seems that when the grip of power is not in the Mecca of Hip Hop...certain artist throw sublimal disses (Ras Kass said it best on "Sonset" do your history back packers). Club music is just that...club music, don't get mad when it catches on in NY, those guys can't help it because it became popular there. It doesn't matter that Ghost had a blog praising the South either...do your history checks ppl. Plus there are way more dope artist in the South (Eightball, MJG, Pitbull, Perion...the list goes on...so if you agree with his statements...then you are sublimal dissing too..

By the way...I think Ghost is pretty dope and will buy his stuff again....goes to show you how Southerners don't have to diss...just show and tell the truth!

Hip hop like any major money making industry has loads of problems. 1. Monopoly of the Radio stations. theirs only 2 competing with each other (Clear Channel and Emmis). When you have this they play fads all day long. Every where I go adults(18 and up) can't stand Laffy Taffy. But more than 50% of people listening to radio are under 18. Thats there target and they are going to cater to them. Think if there was only 2 Airline Carriers, the problems we would face.

Hip Hop has become watered down, and because of certain elements in the game there isn't as much of a premium on lyrics. I'm not indicting the whole of the south cause there are MC's that get bizz and rep they region proper(IE: TI, Young Jeezy, Scarface, Lil wayne). But there are also the factions in the south that are trying to mutate hip hop. Hip Hop purist is usually synonymous with NY. Cause we are the backbone and mecca of hip hop. People always say they think rap is going to die. Its been dead. But I think east coast got it wrong.

I went to the Wu concert down here this past Sunday night, and when Ghost started his lil session on wack hip hop, I understood completely what he is talkin about. Yeah, he clowned the Laffy Taffy song, but he was gettin all watered down hip hop in general. I'm was born in NYC and I moved down here to FL so I've been exposed to both sides of the music. To me it ain't a north/south thing, its a Pop music thing. Laffy Taffy is crap, so is a lot of stuff that comes out of NY. When you ing the club or a strip club, you want to hear songs like laffy taffy. But when you are just riding with your boys, you might want to hear something hard or deep. And when you are with your lady, you might want to hear some r&b. Because Ghostface do not like the song, that don't mean that we have to listen to him.
