It's good to see Dame and Irv putting their old differences aside. Just think it was only 3 years ago that Irv and Dame was fighting over who was the 'hottest nigga in the building'. I came across some interesting passages while reading Queens Reigns Supreme...
"In a July 30, 2002 profile for Rolling Stone, Irv and Jay-Z's partner Damon Dash tussled over who the reporter could dub the "hottest nigga in the building." After arguing at Def Jam's 8th Avenue offices, Irv and Dash bicker again over the phone..."
Another interesting passage about Dame and Jay-Z was from Curtis Scoon:
"Irv promoted the Roc-A-Fella guys as street guys and I dealt with them as such," Scoon says meaning that handshakes, not contracts, would suffice if they were to enter into a business relationship. "But I immediatetly knew that Jay and Dame were not street. They were the kind of guys who could fuck each other over and then meet at a party and hug for the cameras."
Could this whole Jay-Z and Dame Dash breakup be a set-up?

In regard to the set up... I dont think it is. Anyone who's personally been in the presence of dame dash in the last year or so knows that this mans ego has gotten too big for his britches. Also Jay-z has tasted way too much success without dame at this point to go back. They may be friends again at some point but for now it's business as usual.

My name is Frank Epson, I'm a 43 year old caucasion male.. and I found this site through my son Jason who's totally in love with rap music and (as he explained) the culture of Hip-Hop. We're americans but live in The Netherlands for now, because of my work.
To be totally honest: I'm a David Bowie, Rolling Stones guy myself.

2. I don't know all these artists.. but it seems that this 50 Cent guy is big. I googgled him and he has quite an impressive resumé. Can someone tell me - cuz it is absolutely unclear to me because everybody is slamming the guy - is he the #1 rapper?

1st, we must give you dap for try'n to relate w/ what your son listens to. Now, you have damn near over 25 yrs. of Hip-Hop to cover in order to understand and maybe even educate your son on what really real.
You'll be able to relate to some of the music samples used by the DJs and producers of today, as some familiar tunes of your(our) day.

Frank...recommend you readup on the history of hip hop. Take it further than what your son knows bout it. Anything that's been goin on...pretty much since '97 is just the commercialization of the music. Learn about the roots. This will lead you into Def Jam, Run DMC..the whole movement, when the undaground movement came up above ground and the first hip hop record lable was established. While studying up on the east coast, look up Public Enemy. This will break down the whole Black Power movement..conscious rap scene. Then take it to the west coast with some study on NWA...the beginning of Gangsta Rap, which will also lead you into learning more about Ice-T. That will lead you into how once money took it over, NWA split up and Death Row came about. By doin that..you'll lead into Snoop, Tupac. The war with Bad Boy, etc. Rocafella records. Death of Tupac, Biggie. Take it down south..start off reading bout 2Live Crew..and that whole time.
Start the homework, and along the way read the bylines. Find a reference to something you never heard of...look it up. I seriously doubt your son is into taggin' (graffit), or breakin (breakdancing) considering those areas of the "hip hop culture" or not victim to the commercialization. I sense it is more of an understanding as to the way he dresses, talks..music he listens to, styles of cars, etc. You'll gain a lot from reading up on the sources I've provided you.
As far as 50 Cent...he's a pimp. And I said that meaning, he is pimpin' white culture using the lures of the accessible "tough guy". I'd feel safe saying 75% of the money 50 Cent has earned doing what he is doing has been made off the ignorance of white people, and the commercialization of the music.
Also recommend you look into the "Holy Hip Hop" scene. I guarantee you if you turn your son onto that...he won't leave it. Alot of people will try and discount it, but I guarantee you noone could say the songs is wack. Check it out at;
