A few months later Mase is running churches, six months later mase is running around like a young magic don juan in flashy clothes. A few years later the church funds start thinning out you are just a has been who's a minister, ppl don't look at you with the same kind of amazement anymore. You've made really bad business decisions, and now you start looking at that old jewelry as your next month's budget, you look around the game and see everyone who stole from your style iced out and holding mills. You start plotting a way to ease back into it without jumping back in head first, just a few novelty tracks and vanish once again. Puff puts the bug in your ears after the buzz from lean back, you release an album the streets don't honor it. You don't get the same play because you don't have the same kind of pull at mtv anymore. Puff is like this was a bad investment, you've been away so long that all you owed was one album and the 10 year deal is done. You look around at the game today, on one side you got jay who'll give you a shot at redemption and can get producers who normally wouldn't want to work with you to work with you, on the other side you got 50 cent who while not being skilled as an mc is an avid business man who'll probably have you on a cereal box by summer 2006. On both sides you face problems both sides have issues with the other, each side has ppl that don't really like some ppl you have been associated to. The bug get's put in your ear that fans want to see you reinvent yourself and return to the mase of old (however the hell that works) and that soft records don't sell anymore. Next up I would like to address the dumbasses that have the gull to say Lamount "Big L" Coleman is overrated and could not make good songs (lol). It's like Jay-Z said, "Do you fool listen to music? Or do you just skim through it?" Purchase "Lifestylze Of Da Poor And Dangerous," and you'll see that Jay-Z got at a lot of his ealier "Reasonable Doubt" style from this man. I can't say the album is a 5-Mic classic because the prouduction wasn't flawless (although it was solid). But lyrically, this is one of the greatest albums in hip-hop history. After ya'll haters cop that album, purchase "The Big Picture" and than cop a D.I.T.C CD. Then you should realize how much this nigga was bitten off of and how he was about to shut the game down. Signing to G-Unit is also a form of self preservation. On Bad Boy the rappers were dying (B.I.G.), leaving (Craig Mack, Shiny Suit Mase, The Lox) or getting long-term sentences (Shyne). On G-Unit the worse that will could is to Ma$e is that he'll either get shot at or pretend to shoot someone for publicity. You've made really bad business decisions, and now you start looking at that old jewelry as your next month's budget, you look around the game and see everyone who stole from your style iced out and holding mills. You start plotting a way to ease back into it without jumping back in head first, just a few novelty tracks and vanish once again. Puff puts the bug in your ears after the buzz from lean back, you release an album the streets don't honor it. You don't get the same play because you don't have the same kind of pull at mtv anymore. Puff is like this was a bad investment, you've been away so long that all you owed was one album and the 10 year deal is done. You look around at the game today, on one side you got jay who'll give you a shot at redemption and can get producers who normally wouldn't want to work with you to work with you, on the other side you got 50 cent who while not being skilled as an mc is an avid business man who'll probably have you on a cereal box by summer 2006. On both sides you face problems both sides have issues with the other, each side has ppl that don't really like some ppl you have been associated to. The bug get's put in your ear that fans want to see you reinvent yourself and return to the mase of old (however the hell that works) and that soft records don't sell anymore. So you are willing to assume the role of super bulletproof mc to the highest bidder. You said "i'm leaving hip hop, to find my calling" and some how money called you back to the game. I mean in retrospect mase was a likeable artist with a few clever lines and a knack for having a hand in the next hot thing, but as a person he's like so many other rappers who totally lack a life plan and find themselves swallowing alot of the stupid public comments and decisions they make.

If Mase wrote any of Big L's material then how come the illest verses of Mase's career, which can be counted on one hand, don't even come close to Big L's f'n freestyles! I beleive that Mase has a plan for this whole possibly signing with G-Unit or Def Jam. He is trying to clean hip hop by speaking positive words on his albums but not preaching. He just needs a major secular label to market him so his positive message can be heard. I beleive Mase is being led by God to make a attempt to try to clean up Hip Hop. Mase has helped point a lot of rappers in the right directions and some rappers say that they feel Mase is a true role model. Mase will not sell out for a dollar, trust me.

Being a part of 1st generation hip hop family i am saddened by the way these new artist treat each other. All of them are making money and powerful business moves but continue to act so ignorant towards each other. Hell, just 35 years ago most african americans and latinos in America were broke. Now our youth are getting paid through this creative form of art but we still continue to envy and hate one another. This is Willie Lynch at his finest. This is to Sha-Elemental. I'm not from St. Louis fam. But I am from the Midwest. I'm actually from Gary, IN which is right next to Chicago and about 2 hours away from The Lou. I love the Midwest Hip-Hop scene ( i.e. Gary, Chicago, St. Lou) with a passion.
So I'm not gonna front. I do look upon Nelly with favor just because I think that nigga is doing it so hard for our side.
However, I would never put a nigga on my list just because he from the same neck of the woods as I am. If you're garbage, then you're garbage. It don't matter where you're from. Trust me, we (the midwest) have put out nigga's that are mad garbage. Chingy & J-Kwon are obviusly the most noticable. But there's plenty of other not as well known MC's from the G and Chi that are downright terrible. So I won't say someone is a top 50 MC based on that.
With that said, Nelly is #15 on my list and should be in at least everybody's top 50 (really 25)because of his impact on the game,originality of his style, quality as well as sells of his album, and the nigga can just flat out flow as hard as anybody out. That's on everything I love.
So whenever you have the time, I'm asking you to please just really listen to my man's entire collection (from "Country Grammer" to "Suit" as well as the "Free City" album with the St. Lunaticz and "The Longest Yard" Soundtrack), and really watch how the nigga's flow has evolved over the years.
Now that I got that out the way. I knew it would be inevitable that I would have to defend my placement of the true King of L.A. (sorry Snoop), E-40 at #6. First of all, it is my belief that you can not be a true hip-hop head with at least respecting Earl Stevens even if you don't listen to his music. Secondly you just have bad taste if you don't feel an E-40 record. Although I'll admit his last two albums ("Grit and Grind" and "Breaking News") have not been up to the caliber of his previous records.
Now let me explain why E-40 is a greater MC than Rakim. Obviously I love Rakim and have the highest regard for his status as a hip-hop icon or else he would not have been #7 on my list. But people need to realize that Rakim has been doing this for three decades now and all he has put out is what 6 albums.Now two of his albums received a well deserved 5 mics and he probably should have gotten a third 5 mic rating for "Follow The Leader."
However E-40's been doing it for a decade and a half and is about to drop his tenth album. That's not even including the three albums he did as the lead member of The Click. So off work ethic alone, my nigga 40 got Rakim faded.
Even more so than that, my nigga 40 is what we call "your favorite MC's favorite MC." No he is nowhere near as helralded a MC as Rakim is(which is a damn shame)or else I wouldn't have to be defending his ranking right now. But any nigga that's really on his shit with this hip-hop knows what's up.
Not only did he smash Rasheed Wallace and AZ (another one of the best that ever touched a mic)on one of the most underrated diss song's ever recorded (Record Hater's off his 96 album "Hall of Game"), but this nigga has never spit nothing wack out of his mouth a day in his life. Not to mention that this nigga is the #1 most original, creative, and slept on MC's in hip-hop history. A lot of the slang you use because you heard your favorite MC say it started right in the Bay Area with that man, c'mon dawg.
This nigga 40 has worked with damn near everyone including the G.O.A.T, 2pac. That's something that not even Rakim can claim hold to. Now I know it's gonna be a lot of hating of this statement. But E-40's 95 album "In A Major Way" crushes any album in Rakim's catalouge including the masterpiece "Paid In Full." That's right, I said it and muthafuck The Source for not giving that album 5 mics. That is the fifth greatest album in hip-hop hitory only trailing "The Blueprint," "Stillmatic," "Ready to Die," and "Me Against The World."
Hopefully now you understand why E-40 is the sixth greatest ever. He's a lyrical monster. And like XXL said several years back, he is the most underrated MC ever and the greatest game spitter of all times.
Finally I just want to say three quick things. To Nucca I just wanna say I hear you fam. But you got to be serious. As much as I love Mase, there is no way in hell that you could honestly believe that Big L stole anything from him. If that was so, people wouldn't still be talking about Big L's old verses because Mase is alive and would be killing it lyrically right now with his songs. Don't get me wrong. Mase was and still is a GOOD lyricist. But Big L was and forever will be ONE OF THE GREATEST lyricist ever my guy.
Secondly I would like to say to Jersey that you just cannot say that Biggie is better than Pac. He's not even the greatest MC in the history of New York. I'll always love and respect Big Poppa and he is top 5(#4 to be exact). But with just one real classic album (Life After Death should have gotten 4 maybe 4.5 mics), you cannot say he's the G.O.A.T.
Lastly to Miami Fucka, I just would like to say that you're sleeping on the mighty RULE and you need to cut that shit out fam. One of the many differences between Rule and 50 is that when Rule was "singing," it was real and original. When 50 does it, he's biting and wack. So I feel you on the whole "FUCK G-UNOT" thing. But my nigga, Ja is one of the realest and illest MC's ever. And the same pussies that's hating on him be biting and bumping ALL of his shit on the low. When that nigga first blew up on the commercial scene, he became so popular that no nigga was really trying mess with him because they weren't trying to catch any backlash from the public. I don't know why though because any MC with just a halfway descent flow and rhymes can smash this garbage nigga. But it is what it is.
Now as for him being respected, that's a lie too. He obviusly got tight mic skills or his last album wouldn't have gotten an XL out of XXL. We all know that XXL is to G-Unit what The Source is to garbage ass Benzino(I wouldn't even know that nigga existed if it wasn't for The Source. Somebody please kick that nigga off the staff.) So for him to get that rating from XXL is a testament to his talant. As for respect from his peers, I alredy told you that the ratio of real niggas to fake is uncanny. It's like trying to find the ratio of white people to black at a Black Panther Convention. So "few" niggas respect cause it's few real niggas in the game.
Now as far as the other artists you listed in comparison. How can he not be as respected as Jay-Z when the first time we seen him on a video was as the feature artist on "Can I Get A?" Not mention that the nigga wrote the hook to that song in addition to his verse. So everytime that album sells a copy, Rule gets a cut of that. And last I checked, "Hard Knock Life" was 5x platinum off the strength of that single.
Now don't even go there with Snoop. I love that nigga and got nothing but respect for him. But his ass be singing more than Rule (i.e. "Let's Get Blown"). His last two albums he's dropped, "Paid The Cost" and "Rhythem and Gangsta," were straight up boo boo. The last good album he did was "Last Meal." Plus Rule smashed Snoop not once, but twice on the same album (The Last Temptation, Tracks 4&5). I'll address the Scarface comparison in a bit.
But first I want to correct what you said about his path to success. You said nigga's weren't feeling "Vennie, Vetti, Vecci." Yet that shit went platinum. And you can't say those sells were female cause that was a straight street album.
Now contrary to popular belief, all of his albums were street. But I'm a keep it real. His next three albums had a lot more commercial success because he did put a handfull of radio friendly singles and joint's for the ladies on each one of them. So when he start blowin up, the same bumping his shit before and even then started hating on him. 50 Cent capitalized on the early backlash and used it to help blow up which as much as I hated it was a smart buisiness move.
My nigga Ja tried to be the bigger man by ignoring all the hate and backlash. But the talk kept getting louder about how Ja was becoming soft and 5O was taking him out.
So then my nigga went and made his hardest, most street and gutter album to date with "Blood In My Eyes."
Now when he did that, the same nigga's that said he was gettin soft started screaming that he's letting 50 Cents get to him and he needs to go back to what made him sell records ("singing"). Lastly, I will address your statement that it was easy for 50 to "take out" Rule. First the latter statement. boywonder1, you're right the golden age was 95-99. i lived through both those periods and music has gotten betta. 85-88 hip hop wasn't honest it reflected too much on da party side of hip hop and not the harsh realities of the streets, when the truth was crack was boomin' between 85-88. now a days you have a much betta balance in hip hop. the only other thing i can say about 95-99 is this is the period where a lot of wack niggas started to be accepted in hip hop like master p. he is the main reason wack rappers are in rap. he was the first wack rapper to gain respect and become a multi-millionaire. as a result record company's don't know what to put out now, cause anything could possibly blow up, look at mike jones.

What up people? First of all, as far as Mase going to G-Unit, I really couldn't care less. He obviously isn't going anywhere with Bad Boy (who is?). And Mase has to make money. As far as the golden age of hip-hop, I thought it was 87-93. Public Enemy, Rakim, Special Ed, Big Daddy Kane, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, N.W.A. I can't really knock any of the 94-99 selections, but I think 87-93 music cleared the way for everything we hear right now.

There isn't anything in rap that is interesting right now. 50 is saying the same thing he always says (clubs, guns, girls, etc.). As much as I hate to admit it, Kanye West's album is the best I heard all year. As irritating as he can be, he really went everywhere with Late Registration. For everybody who has heard it, can anyone really tell me that The Massacre comes close to Kanye's record?

Before I go I just wanna address 1 more thing. That is this ongoing debate between Lewis and Manifest over who's had the best album this year: Common's "BE" or Kanye West's "Late Registration." The answer is neither. Now before niggas get ready to reply on some hatin shit, please just hear me out.
First of all, both of those album's were very nice. However, Common's album is slightly (deep breath) overrated. Don't get it twisted. Like I said, "BE" is far from being a garbage album. But when I read that XXL gave it a XXL,I was expecting his album to make me rethink my position on "Me Against The World" being the greatest album in hip-hop history. After all if I'm not mistaken, this is the same magazine that gave Nas's "Stillmatic" an XL, what the fuck.
There is no way in hell that you can say those albums are even equal, let alone saying Commons is better. Nas's shit was flawless, lyrically and production wise. Not to mention that album birthed the greatest diss song ever, and "Either" was nice too (lol). Plus The Source and Vibe gave "BE" a score of 4 1/2. To be real with ya'll I think that was too high. I honestly feel like "BE" is a 4 mic album, which is a banger. But I think we throw the "classic" title out way too loosely.
As far as Kanye's album goes, "Late Registration" was acually a better album then "BE." But that wasn't a classic album either. It was however near flawless and I would give it 4.5 mics if I worked for The Source. It is better than "The College Dropout," (which should've gotten 4 mics when it came out) as well. With that said, "Late Registration" WAS the 2nd best album of 2005 for all of one week.
This past Tuesday, one of the greatest, most lyrical, and most underrated MC's in the history of hip-hop released his long awaited, constantly pushed back (the story of his career) 5th solo album "AWOL," 10 years after he blessed the world with his FLAWLESS debut, "Doe or Die." I don't know what the fuck was up with The Source, but this album is better than 38 of the 42 albums that received 5 mics (a lot of which don't even deserve 5 mics).
Unless you only watch what MTV and BET (106&Park especially) is feeding you, then you know that I'm obviously talkin about that nigga AZ. For years he's been gettin overlooked while quitly making albums worthy of the same critcal acclaim that we give Pac, Nas, Jay, Big, KRS,Rakim, and many more real MC's whenever they drop an album. You can honestly make a case for this man as the best rapper alive. And whoever hates on that just has wack perspective, period.
While AZ has definatly never dropped a wack album, none of his following releases matched the calliber of his stellar debut (although "9 Lives" was close), until now. Let's hope that he finally gets his long overdue acknowledgement with "AWOL" because it's not only a true gem and a breath of fresh air for hip-hop, but it 's also his best album since "Doe or Die". This album marks the return of AZ "The Visualiza" and I give it 4.5 mics. With that said, AZ's album is still only the 2nd best of 2005.
Manifest, I noticed you said that "Late Registration" was the best album you've heard all year. Well it's obvious that you haven't had the chance to hear the debut album from this artist that goes by the name of Blueprint. His debut album "1988" came out this past march and that shit is a true return to real hip-hop. This cat is like Kanye West x10.
He produces and spits like no other nigga in the game right now. Through and through, "1988" is a flawless album and it should've gotten 5 mics. Magazines didn't even bother to review his shit. They too busy trying to rate Yung Jeezy and Tony Yayo's wack ass shit. This is the first true 5 mic album since "Stillmatic" in 2001 ("The Fix" should of gotten 4 MAYBE 4.5 mics), and it's a shame that most of the world will never know it. On that note I'm out ya'll. Everybody stay up and be true to yourselves and not no one else,1.

To my manz J.Nich. How can you say that Common's BE is only worth four mics. Is it because he's not from N.Y. I guess Common could never put out an album that's worth five mics. Have you honestly listen to every track on the album? Production with Kanye and J.Dilla is excellent. The lyrics are well you know! This is a well put together album. You're right about Stillmatic because I believe that album deserved a five mic rating as well as God Son. I would give Kanye's Late Registration four and a half but it's damn near close to a classic. I haven't heard the A.Z. c.d. yet but if it's really on point then let me know. I've been listening to that Chemistry album with 9th Wonder and Buckshot and the album is dope. My next purchases will be J.Dilla's intrumental album as well as Lil Brother's The Minstrel Show! Tell me what do you think about 50 saying that he's responsible for Kanye's success. One Love!
