Anyway, what 50 is doing to hip hop everywhere, is what "crunk" is doin to the dirty south. It's masking the way real, good, hip hop sounds. I got dudes tryin to argue over whether Mike Jones or Chamillionaire won that beef, cuz "they both so ill, its hard to tell". I just tell them that neither of them are shit compared to real mcs, then they try to say that "couldn't nobody in the rap game fuck wit Lil Flip though". And you just can't get it through their head that those guys suck-ass compared to the greats. The point of my story is that so many people assume that the mainstream is where its at, that they're ignorant of what great hip hop sounds like, and the only underground shit they hear is from dudes in their area. Its sad to see happening, so I propose that every high school with any "urban" student body, offer a class on hip hop with, say, 5 units or chapters that would be studied in this order:
1 - Roots of hip hop - which would discuss the origins of the culture, and the people responsible for pioneering it.
2 - Early hip hop - A study into the first mcs to do it, and the effect they had on hip hop, and the world.
3 - The golden age of hip hop - You know what I'm talkn about, back around when KRS, Rakim, EPMD, etc. were in their prime, and the early days of Wu-Tang, NWA, etc.
4 - Birth of "Gangsta Rap" - From the early days of 2pac, to about the time of B.I.G.'s death, studying mostly the introduction of the more hardcore hip hop into the mainstream.
5 - Hip hop of today - Focusing on how hip hop has spread, and the current sound of hip hop.
Now, this is just an idea, its not foolproof or anything, but let me know what you think.

4) The way hip hop found its feet was when mc's started competing with each other to have the illest skills on the mic. My stance on this issue is that in the beginning, it wasn't about sales, it was about skills, and it stayed that way until the white audience started buyin into it. The reason these cats are selling so much is because they appeal to sub-urban white kids, who want that "hard"-ness and think "gangsta" rap will give it to them. If you compare record sales between the greatest mc's of all time, and the "mc"s of today, the ones of today sell much more, because intricate wordplay, and hard-hitting punchlines don't appeal to the white side of hip hop, they want beats they can move to and hooks they can understand.
