Scarface: Way Overrated

...I'm referring to the movie.

It's sad how many people look at this movie as the blueprint of hustling. Most rappers look to this movie for inspiration on 'going all out' because in the final scene Tony Montana goes out in a blaze of glory.

So what. He died. And he killed his best friend and his sister.

How come no one talks about the scene where Tony Montana is warned to keep a low-profile before he draws too much attention to himself and winds up dying. If every rapper paid attention to that scene some rappers might have careers.

Yeah I agree %100. WHy would you emulate someone who sniffs mountains of coke and gets so paranoid that he kills his family and stays in his house surrounded by guns? At leas in Goodfellas and the Godfather movies they stayed relatively drug free....

we stay on low-profile so low, I'm not sure if I want to plug our rap crew...

You guys are all missing the point. Scarface is more aboout the realization of a dream... the rag to riches story of a lowly cuban immigrant named Tony Montana. His story symbolizes the ideology that "The World is yours" as illustrated by the last seen when he falls in the pool and you see the statue which reads so in his mansion. He rose from a dish washer to Kingpin simply by sheer determination. A lot of rappers see themselves in this light... at least they hope that while they may currently be in the grind they will eventually break out of the mire and find wealth...They all have the mentality that if Tony Montana can do it - I can do it too. However, this is rarely the case as most rappers lack the business savy, talent and most of all sheer determination to really make it big in the rap game. Due to this they let a little bit of success get to their brains and they lose the will and determination to put out better music than previously ... motherfucking 50cent is a prime example.

--------
by the way that new 50 and yayo track is horrendous...who the fuck produced those beats? Whoever who did should be banned from ever making music or at least be dick-whipped or something

You know its about time I heard someone down rate the hype of this movie publicly - I mean how fickle are we when this type of movie glorify's being a hustle or a gangsta. Where I'm from we make calculated moves which progress us foward and we don't follow Itialian dude's who snif cocaine. Tony was lucky to live as lond as he did with all the bad decisions he made. These rapp dude's is so corny though its not hard to believe that they would rank this movie high in their gangsta movie portfolio - one!

it's just a movie. who cares??

i agree with the dude that said you guys are missin the point, it is supposed to show the rise AND FALL of tony. its supposed to emphasize that you live fast and die young. and a few problems with the other comments "we dont follow italian dudes who sniff cocaine" he was cuban not italian.
"and he killed his best friend and his sister"
"gets so paranoid that he kills his family"
did you watch the movie? he doesn't kill his sister or anyone in his family, (unless you consider manny family because he did marry his sister.) but he kills his best friend ,manny, because he told him to stay away from his sister and manny went behind his back and married her. but he doesn't kill his sister, the dude on the balcony kills her. anyway this was a great movie and i really cant beleive that you idiots would make a thread tryin to denounce such a classic film.

the point behind this movie is that the world is yours...you dont have to go the "traditional" route to gain personal sucess.people love this movie cuz its hard and alot of rappers follow him cuz they feel as if they are in the same situation, they came from nothing and now they makin millions...thats all

ps...this movie is not the blueprint of hustling....its the blueprint of sucess for those who have nothing.

Personally, I like this movie. But I agree that it is way overrated. I was reading Vibe a couple months ago when 50 was on the cover, and they had the 50 most influential movies on hip hop or what not, and Scarface was ranked #1. Now to start off, they should've put Bobby Brown on the cover as Tony Montana, rather than 50. I mean, neither of them are really gangstas, but Bobby at least has the coke-fiend part down. Anyway, this movie is probably the most well known among the hip hop community, but the most influential should've been a movie more like Juice, or Boyz N Da Hood, movies that inspire thought, rather than telling you to "go all out" and end up "going out like a gangsta". Movies that have a message, Baby Boy, Belly, Poetic Justice. And also I mean, like when I'm rockin a party, and scratchin the shit outta some records, I don't think about getting shot down in a coke-daze, I think of that dj battle scene in Juice, right before they rob old man Quilles. Ya feel me?

u have to look beyond the money & drugs to reveal the message...THE WORLD IS YOURS...some people dont believe that but its true.

damn it's just a movie you people act like it happen fa real, but let's imagine it was real. Scarface symbolizes a movement of the underdog comin from shit to havin the world in your hands and makin some bad choices and some good. Point blank everybody tryin to come the fuck up and tony did it his way. So that's a hip-hop classic hands muthafuckin down. The movie didn't have a good endind so there's a strong message right there, you could have it all and have it taken in the same breathe stupid so get whatever message you want out the movie. Scarface is the best rise and fall movie ever ta date. Damn ya'll need to leave hip hop the fuck along look how many black families eatin off hip hop, when it's negativity in the air hip-hop alway's gotta play a part we in the hip-hop world voted and Scarface won so get off tony m. dick and if he did do drugs so fuckin what he a grown fuckin man everybody pollute the body with something be it food, weed, coke, exstacy, beer, henessesy, whatever so why the fuck we alway tryin to judge someone else didn't god say thall shall not judge all the fuck we do is Judge quit being bored with your life and find yo ass something to be proud of instead of being on this damn computer typing all that bullshit you computer thugs out there they should fine all ya'll for typing that bullshit and smack the shit out of ya'll !!! n-boggie a.k.a. Mr smack the shit outta ya favorite rappers favorite rapper holla back!!!

scarface was made with several bad intentions...1st reason: to destroy the success of black owned film companies/and directors(mr van peebles)2.to promote geonicide among amerikkkas so called minorities during a very inportant time zone when movies promoted anti-drugs/ anti violence/anti police corruption... this movie is not by far inspirational nor educational.however the last godfather showed the the relationship between religion and mafia....

(psssst. It's THOU shall not judge, not THALL shall not judge.)

First off, you have just said the most hypocritical statement I have ever "heard". You are the only one right here talking like a "computer thug". And what would you call what you just said? I'd say it was your judgment.

Look, I think YOU are missing the point entirely. The whole "The World Is Yours" thing is obvious, an ant could have picked up on that. What I'm sayin is that the instrument they conveyed it through is contributing to this snowball of gang violence. In response to the statement made "look how many black families eating off hip hop", I must say look how many black people dyin off hip hop. Look how many black families are being torn apart because their son's or daughter's favorite rapper inspired them to go out and lead a life of crime. You need to open your eyes, look around you, and try to lie to yourself about whats going on.

And I don't know about anyone else on this site, but for you to tell me that I need to go do something with my life, is ridiculous. Obviously, you don't know anything about me, so I'll clue you in a little bit.

I am a Freshman in high school, and I don't touch drugs, period. I used to fuck with all that shit, but then I found out first hand how that shit can turn your life around, and I realized that I was becoming a drone of the ghetto, with no function but what I was programmed to do: be as irresponsible as I could, blame my problems on everyone else, "succumb to my fate" of not doing shit with my life, and eventually wind up dead in a gutter. I may be young but I am nobody's fool. I'm putting together a recording studio with my money that I make on my own, within the boundaries of the law. I build cabinets and chairs for people; I dj at parties, and make mixtapes and beats to sell; I'm working on getting my own hip hop column in my school newspaper; and I do repair work in houses, and on stereo equipment; all while maintaining a 3.4 GPA, playing football, and running track. These are all my "hustles", and I'm good at them because I apply myself.

Still want to tell me to do something with my life? Y'all can think whatever you want to about what I'm saying, I don't give a fuck because unlike some of you, I'm actually doing something with my life, I'm going places. The world is mine for the taking, but I'd much rather earn it, and know that I deserve it, than resort to stealing it from other hard-working people that are fighting the stereotypes that surround them. So whats up, huh?

Correction: I meant "and DON'T try to lie to yourself about whats going on".

Tony montana was a fucking g he did more things then these half ass critics would ever do. that movie is repected by every huslter and g on da street.

shot out to dj nahlege. Thats who we need to focus on. People tryin to make it off of honest money and he a little nigga. fuck tony montanna. It is a good movie take it for what it is. And stop blaming hip hop for fucking up " the black community". It starts with the parents not the music.

i always lough at when i see fake black rappers glorifying italian, whatever mafiaso characters.the scarface charachter in the movie is like a hyäne and i hardly cant understand how grown man idolizes such characters.in my life aint nobody that i dont know personally can ever be my idols.piss on scarface, alcapone, gambinos, frank nitty all of these stupid gays

you fool's need to quit acting like someone else and set a fuckin example, for starters be your own damn man and not some tony montana, hell yes it's a great movie, but like i just said it's a damn movie, be your own damn role model, and make people want to be you, treat people right and take no shit from no one. then and only then will you find your inner self, countryboy out !!!!!!!!!

dj nahlege playboy look I'm not knockin yo hustle trust me in one of my raps I state " I'm so hot I'm jealous of my damn self, but I'll never be jealous of another mans wealth," holla so dude big upsss! fa holdin yo shit down and don't get all emotional bout da shit it's only my opinion don' So dj I got luv fa u and don't know u from a can of paint so let's clear that up. Everybody got they opinion son and that's that my opinion only mean somthing to me it shouldn't matter what someone else is thinkin didn't god give each of us our own brain? If the director wanted to go in that direction with scarface then he had a vision and went on it and made a classic hands down when the movie was selected as a favorite among the hip hop community then let it be we voted and it is what it is hate it or love it!!! I was just fuckin wit you homeboy about most of the things I was sayin homes. But tony came up the fuck up hard no doubt, so I look at it like don't let nothin getin yo way as far as yo come up I'm not sayin pickin up a sack or bussin them thangs I'm sayin the world is your playboy bunny and life a bitch wit a pretty face, but she burnin so play her wit caution homes I burn trees like forest fires and I still hold my shit dzzown " many of us are born in da ghetto, many of us are trapped in da ghetto, but millionaires came from out da ghetto" "OUT DA GHETTO" ENT 2005. WE HERE BABY!!! That's my label and we bout ta bubble like crystal son trust me. So and the end of the day everybody will have an opinion not a judgement so if everyone voted master p bout it bout it as the best hip hop movie I still will feel how I feel and that's still an opinion and everybody else's opinion. so mo power to you son keep doin you and I'm not tryin to judge you. Like 50 cent came up hard I'm only lookin at his hustle what rapper came up hared than him in such a short period. 10 mil sold, beg 4 mercy 3 mil, bank$ 2 mil, young buc 1 mil, game 4 mil, g-unit clothing, 50 water, bulletproof video game, get rich or die tryin the movie, he came in the game wit the same mentality as tony that's why they put him on the cover of vibe who else fits that profile than 50. I look at it like this america lied to us tricked us and stole our history from us so any young black man that came up hard his own way then that's what I'm on people try to judge 50 for his promoting violence, crime been here way before a mike got picked up so don't act like rappers glorify that lifestyle cause we don't but hip-hop is about using your imagination and we rap about things we seen, heard, lived or makin a transition from the streets. Jay-z luv his hustle game NBA ownership, nelly, baby, master p, puff, russell got crazy hustle game. Parents are responsible for the ignorance of these kids not hip hop. There's killin in alot of movies but that don't mean go kill do it? Movies are visual and hip hop is music so songs don't make you act stupid, that starts from the crib and yo up bringing I'll admit there's alot of foollery in hip hop but you can't take away from what hip hop has did for middle age black america. hip hop started from dj kool herk hookin up 2 turn tables outside and people comin 2 party in the early 70's hip hop is only around 30 yrs old and still growin stronger when everyone said it will die!! So like tony comin up hard fills great to any man that has accomplished alot of wealth. We as rappers look at it like damn spittin in this mike can change and open alot of doors for me and my family. It's the choices we make once we get successful that determine the future of our young kids and the generation around them. Remember life has to have a balance Good Bad Pretty Ugly and you fit in where you fit in at and god is the only real G that can judge you so good or bad he know what type of person you grow to become and what's in your heart son. So hate it or luv it, the underdogs on top and I'm gone shine till my heart stop, I just wanted to show you where I'm comin from playboy so holla back don' and the computer thug thing I was just fuckin wit you homie it's not like that!!! 1-luv I'm out like the lights when you don't pay yo damn bill peace and I don't glorify cubens I just respect any man hustle game!! loyalty don't get it twisted lil dirty

I appreciate that, and I wasn't tryin to be a prick about it or anything, you just kinda caught me at a bad time.

But, still, I mean, I agree that it is in large part up to the parents to educate their kids on these subjects. The thing is though, that alot of kids come to a certain age where they start to think their parents are stupid and don't know what they're talkin about, and thats where the artists come in. When I look around me, I see other kids my age doin shit that could ruin their lives, but they don't realize that because they hear rappers glorifying it, and think that its cool and their parents aren't because they tell them not to do it. I think a possible way to solve this problem is by not giving the gangster life any attention. Its like that little sister on a mission to piss you off, her goal is to capture your attention, but if you ignore her, she'll eventually lose interest. But of course, nobody wants to hear this, especially from a teenager. I just wish I could wake everybody up to perhaps realize what I do.

Ya ever feel like you're in the Matrix?

word dj nahlege I feel what ur sayin all I'm sayin is it's happening so alot of rappers use rap as an expression of they inner feelings. Yeah I wish hip-hop could be cleaned up alot but if we stop rapping about it doesn't mean kids life are goin to change rap is being blamed for alot of teenagers behavior and that's not the problem. I listen to alot of rap from every coast and it never influenced my actions yeah sometimes teenagers listen to certain songs and go out and do exactly what's on the song but how many smart black young men would make a stupid move and end up in trouble. Some of the choices that these teenagers make and later regret is strickly on them and I'm not just leaving them out in the cold like that but when you make your bed you must lay in it word!! I do agree that something must be done about this ongoing problem seriously!! but it's alway's goin to be crime all I'm sayin is you see it everyday, poverty, racist cops, ignorant black on black crime, so maybe when you tell your story some little kids can hear what you seen or been threw and maybe avoid some of the mistakes that you made amd learn from your good and bad moments. peace don' I'm bout ta bounce it was cool ta here ya points and view on real shit like this, your very smart to be a freshman so stay head strong and positive son least I could leave this site knowing it still is some young smart men out here so keep goin dude with all your side hustles make ya moves don!! !-luv

Yall must be from the north yall just haters man scarface is a legend in the rap game yall need to wake up and smell the coffee

U must be from da south u dum ass fuck what are you black or white

ALL those people that are believe Scarface to be as a way of life some type of guidance(fantasy shit), wearing Scarface t-shirts and shi*(= need to read a book. I reccommend the Biography of Malcom X. At least you will get to visualize for yourself a true story that will inspire you. He went from street hustler, pimp to legend. This is a true Gansta story!
GO AN READ A BOOK! DUMB ASSES!

JT

I am almost sure they are talkin about the movie Scarface and not the Rapper Scarface. Come on playa, if you gone rep the south be up on thangs!

whoaa!! man all ya'll just blow them damn crusty buggers out ya'll nose and change the damn subject already!!!!

Mannn, I agree with the original post. Yeah it's a movie but guess what? people really imitate this shit, but my main point is all this imitation shit is wack as hell, everybody wanna be a boss. a thug, a gangsta, a mobster..Nigga you think the mob give's a fuck about YOU? you think all these other people you imitate give a shit about what you're talkin' about? Hellllll nawww, mu'fucka try to identify with something else, mock someone else. I aint heard no-one claiming they were proud to be black since x-clan. Go to an Italian or Spanish neighborhood talkin' that mob shit and see how fast flames get smacked out'cha mouth.

I feel as though the movie "SCARFACE" is a great movie and will go down as a CLASSIC film. This movie is a learning tool of do's and don'ts. These rappers are seeing the determination and will to succeed from nothing to something, which is a good thing. How he got it was the bad thing, through murder and drugs. This movie shows some of the Cardinal Sins that will be ya downfall in life. Like Greed, Lust, and Murder to name a few...So I say, any movie that you can learn from is a great one...

DAMN INTERESTING OPINIONS FROM Y'ALL FOOLZ...EDUCATION IS FREEDOM AND WISDOM IS BETTER THAN SILVER AND GOLD - KEEP LEARNIN' YO

What scarface? Not the 1 from 1981 4 sure? This isn't even a subject.

its a fucking movie
carlitos way, and godfather pt. 2 were better anyway
da guy wus a coke head tht backstabbed is bestfriend.........sum fukin real gangsta

Carlitos way was better. While im at it So was Goodfellas and Casino. But damn a lot of people seem to be hating on Scareface. Its a classic movie period, I dont see what all the fuss is about. Different people tend to take to like different movies. Its not that people want to immulate the snorting coke or even moving it, but like people said earlier it was the fact that he came up from nothing to a whole lot of something. It was kinda like an underdog story. People saying that he aint gone be shit and him proving them wrong. That the underlying story of Rappers anywayz. Teachers, the Governement, and others telling these young kids "they aint gone be shit" and them proving those folks wrong. Who ever said Jay-Z wasnt going to be shit was hella wrong. So its not whats going on in the movie, but more so the underlying story that people love so much.

SCARFACE WAS A GOOD MOVIE IN ALL BUT DUDES NEED TO GET OFF THE DICK RIDING EXPRESS OF IT. HALF OF THE PEOPLE WHO SAY ITS THEIR FAVORITE MOVIE NEVER EVEN SEEN IT. THATS WHAT WRONG WITH DUDES NOW TRYIN TO LIVE THAT MOVIE...ITS A MOVIE!! DO YA OWN THING, BE YOUR OWN SELF, DONT MODEL AFTER A CHARACTER THAT GETS MERKED!!IF U REALLY WANT TO TALK ABOUT A CLASSIC MAKE A THREAD ABOUT NEW JACK CITY!!! NINO BROWN( THE BROTHERS KEEPER)

People need to quit tryin to draw inspiration from this movie, and take a look at a movie called Malcolm X, yes, he does get "murked", but he was walking a righteous path. Look at where he came from and what he became, imagine what you could do.

why doesnt anyone put a porno as their most inspirational film?? hmmm?
i wanna fuck jenna jameson, jill kelly and like angela devi in 2 hours at sum point in my life. Most ppl got it right tho,the inspirational parts of scarface were understood...the bad parts forgotten.thats how you face any problem in life people, you learn the good that other people do,AND when they FUCK UP...you learn from their mistakes.

The movie Scarface shows you, ONCE AGAIN for the slow illiterate people that are easy to be lead in the wrong direction and hard to be lead in the right, that emotions must be maintained to deal with reality and your place in reality. Once those emotions of people have gotten away from them via drugs are alcohol of any sort, their perception of reality is distorted and so are the chances of ones dreams to permeate reality to their benefit. Scarface never planned on being in the position that he ended up in, coked-out, doped-up, shut-in, and eventually shut-down. Tony Montana's mentality was clear when his mother did not want to accept his money, because it was blood money. Towards his sister, the closest thing he held dear, he felt " do as I say and not as I do. One guy said earlier that he was making money within the boundaries of the law and whether he knows it or the good that is in the world can appreciate that. Even the foulest of people seek forgiveness and to change their ways. Blood money leaves no legacy, you all have seen Goodfellas where all the Fat Cats took a tumble. Nobody wants to fall lest they can get up. Scarface was not able to get up. People glorify that movie because Tony Montana was super-high in the end to the point where he didn't fear to die, but without the functions of a living body there is no living flesh within which the high can incorporate. If dying in a blaze of glory why high is so fly even though it means never getting high again, then why not live the rest of your life without getting high again. Dying is not better than good food, beautiful women, caring loving women, and oh yeah did I mention living to enjoy the comforts of some women. There must be some serious drug-addicts on this piece and maybe even some dudes who put drugs, a high and a prideful death before women. Men can appreciate women over a drug, all the men young and older do agree we're sure. Like on the movie Sin with Ving Rhames, death be not proud. *sizzle*sizzle* fry*sizzle. That's Scarface the drug users' brains on drugs, its never to late to quit and make a change for the better in life. We're out, a piece of mind leads to peace of mind. PEACE

I'm gonna keep it short. Scarface is an amazing movie not just because of the "hustla" dynamic or the "take no shit" dynamic or the "the world is yours" perspective but also because it is such a great example of the American Dream. Not just the American Dream of coming up from the bottom to success and riches, but alternatively, the flaw of the American dream. Scarface exemplifies how the materialistic society in which we lives corrupts us into wanting the money, power, and respect by any means necessary. For some of us we see a motto like "the world is yours" as an appropriate hustler's mentality. Through the American Dream indeed the world can be ours, but as 'Pac once said, the "American Dream ain't meant for everyone." Some of us cannot/do not/will not come up into success the "right way" (i.e. education, investments, career). Some of us, like Tony, would rather chose the fast road to success via drugs and murder. The movie Scarface shows what happens when the American Dream goes wrong.

i just recently watched Scarface.. mainly cuz of all the hype and its references in hip-hop. I cant believe that this is what everybody is wanting to emulate. I understand the rags to riches rhetoric, however who wants to live like that? The movie was not that good. My dog does a better Cuban accent than Pacino.
As far as mob flicks go... there are many that out shine this movie.... (what movies you were thinking?)
1. Goodfellaz
2. Bronx Tale
3. Carlito's Way
4. Heat
5. Goodfellaz (yeah i kno i listed it twice)
6. Godfather, Godfather II
7. Belly
8.....etc....

get off the dick and watch a good movie stop wasting ya electric bill on this garbage.

Scarface was a good movie, but once again It was a movie. Niggas need to stop actin like 5 yr old's watchin Barney or sumthin. Oh yeah and Goodfellas was da bomb 2..."Maaaa!"
