Sure Missy Elliott is a major rap superstar and songwriter, but does she really have what it takes to pick talent? I don't think so. But I eagerly sat watching Missy Elliott's Road To Stardom every week. Probably because it comes on before Kevin Hill and I'm too lazy to change the channel.
Missy has a knack for finding good talent, but has the gift of never developing them. Personally, I thought her best choice was Nilyne from Plainfield, NJ. She was cute, spunky and could hold a note. Doing a little bit of research, I found that Nilyne was actually down with R&B singer Donell Jones and has pursued a modelling career before her Road To Stardom break. However, this isn't about The Road To Stardom, but The Road To Failure if you let Missy steer your career.
Jessica - The latest singer/songwriter duped into Missy's pyramid scam. We'll see what happens.
Little Brianna - Missy's latest sidekick. This would be Missy's attempt to get that Lil Bow Wow cash. Good luck.
Tweet - Tweet just had bad timing. Her debut album dropped on the same day as Ashanti's debut. Silly love song single with Biggie beat wins over risky self-masturbation song anyday. Her second single, Call Me, became the theme song for some major phone company but afterwards, nothing. Tweet is about to drop her second album this year.
Mocha - Female rapper feature on Nicole's debut album (see below). I downloaded her single, Running Shit, which I thought was kinda - cute. Different flow, good beat. She popped up on the Life soundtrack and one of MC Lyte's album, but after that...{cricket, cricket} Here's what she looked like. Maybe you'll recognize her from Walmart or something.
Nicole Wray - She appeared on All N My Grill. A year later she would drop her solo single, Make It Hot, but for some strange reason, the album never dropped. And then Nicole disappeared. Now she's signed to the Roc and that new single, If I Was Your Girlfriend is pretty descent.
Lil Mo - The girl was everywhere. Hot Boyz, Put It On Me, Parking Lot Pimpin'. Then she had Supawoman Part II popping followed by Gangsta and then her album did nothing. Then she dropped another album. Nothing. Now she's rolling with Cash Money. Hopefully Mannie Fresh can get Lil Mo out of the Elliott ditch.
Danja Mowf - Techincally, Mowf was the first artist signed to Gold Mind Records. Mowf already had the classic Word Of Mowf LP under his belt. Missy signed Danja on the strength of the Aaliyah Remix which was bumped nationally. I even heard that Mowf was on the Dangerous Mouths track alongside Redman on Missy's 2nd album but was mysteriously cut. Years later, Mowf has finally bounced back with R&B singer Tara of 'Country Boys' fame.
Why Missy gave Nilyne the heave-ho [no pun intended] is still questionable, but Nilyne should look at it as a blessing considering Missy has the natural ability to stall everyone's career but her own.

A label can't make an artist successful, it's the public who make an artist successful. All too often it's easy to forget that a hot song or a hot album doesn't always equal success. A label's job is to give the artist all the tools he or she needs to have the best possible chance at superstardom. This starts with a single that catches on with the public. The reason many artists never get an album dropped is because their single doesn't catch on with listeners. Labels are not going to spend millions on an act for the hell of it. Yo, to tell you the truth, i'm not sure alot of you know how the musical industry works. First of all Nilyne was WEAK. She could dance and was far from being the best singer there. Jessica has so much built up emotion that will show when she puts out an albulm. The music industry is about expressing emotions in a creative way(that's what sells records!). And a record label CAN make an artist successful. I agree that the public is PART of it, but a record label does PROMOTION. With out good promotion you will sell nothing. A record label looks to make money off of an artist. And if you hear a single, the albulm WILL drop, bc record labels will not put out singles unless they are putting out an albulm. So if a single flops, it is on the cutting room floor in a meeting at the record label. True record labels look for people who are appealing, but talent is the most of it, look at biggie, he wasn't pretty. Read up on the industry before you post something, so you don't embarass yourself.

I feel that it is many factor's taht determine an artist's sucess or lack thereof, timing, image, origianality, promotion, etc. Some artist's have sucess only after failing under someone else, then thrive in another situation. i rooted for Jessica due to the emotion she exhibits in her music, we do not know if the youth will feel that as they are only concerned with image and bling, bling. Nilyne could have been o.k., but competing with the likes of ciara and so on. deltrice wouldn't have been a bad choice, but Jessica has so much soul and emotion and a life story that could be reminiscent of Mary J.
I'm from chicago and actually had the chance to hear Jessica sing accapella. I must say she sounds pretty good. She performed a song that is going to hit the radio stations pretty soon. Nilya on the other hand was very weak. Her style was just like everyother female solo artist that has one hit single and disappears. As far as the show, it was weak as well. What was up with Missy's nasty attitude and her love for suckers. If you asked me her panalist should have actually run the show. And her groupies, i mean her dancers, were pointless.
I feel like Missy made bad judgements as far as eliminations. She would ask another person their opinion on the other contestants. She should have been more professional, and more hands on like Puffy did with Making the Band. He gave them a taste of the good life to see if they could handle the fame, put them in his Penthouse as if to say, " this could be you, if you work hard". Had various artist come in and advise them, and when they messed up, he took it all away from them, all though some had good potential. Missy's show was the complete opposite of that. People will remember Da BAnd before any of those contestants from the Missy Elliott show.
Sohh Bold is right. Nilyne was WEAK. Jessica definitely deserved the spot. It's not all about what you look like in the industry although many would have you believe that. There are some people that has that as the first thing that come out of their mouths...what does she look like. That's why we have so many WEAK artists in the game now...because it's based on looks. But the people with the real talent do eventually get recognized if they get themselves out there. Did you see how they jazzed up Clay Aiken's look on American Idol? That cat needed a major makeover, but they did it because they knew he would be a money maker. That's how the game works. Either you have enough talent to make them do you up to where you are good enough, or you look good enough for them to figure out a way to market you based on looks instead of skill...Ciara is a prime example of that. She can dance and she's cute a little, but any female vocalist out right now could blow her out of the water as far as vocals are concerned.

the problem i think is the promotion. some people get all the love at the label and some dont. it doesnt always go with the talent. missy has absolutly no rapping skillz. if it wasnt for timbo's exceptional beats she would be nothing as far as an artist is concerned. she may have good talent searching skills..but lets face it the artist needs to be promoted the right way. there is alot of stuff selling out there that is just beyond anything i would call music. most of it is garbage but the label spends so much dough stuffing it down our throats that people buy it. everyone in that camp needs to thank timbo for his lab work..because with out him they would have absolutly NO shot. ex. of good artists and bad promo..Cassidy. this kid is unreal on the mic and a freestyle legend on mix tapes in NY. gets more street love than 50 cent. even a dvd floating around with him breaking freeway in half on a battle in the studio. but as far as the radio ? they made him put out that hotel garbage to get a check. such a dis-service to the man. other examples of no love...both the Jada album and the Fab album..should get it serious..banga after banga on both. they both have at least 4 or 5 radio singles on them a piece. but no love from the label.
As long as your objective as an artist is to make good music and do what you feel and not try to sell records and please the crowd. You have no chance. Its a monopoly like Con Ed the Industry is real and its a powerful machine. The Industry = Modern day version of "The Man"

I watched the road to stardom and at first I was a little skeptical ,but weekly they pulled off a good show. The only thing I thought was a little messed up was that Jessica has already had an album, record deal and a video in 2000. I thought they were trying to find new talent. I am a fan of Jessica's voice ,but as a fair person I am thinkn they should have let someone win that is talented and are fresh and new to the industry..not refurbished goods.
The problem is, especially in the case of Ms.Jade, that any artists that signs with Missy or Timberland (the work together and sound alike) ends up working by the same formula that made Missy famous, and that does not work or fit everyone. Missy is unique and there can not and does not need to be another one. Ms. Jade was hott! However, she did not have the right production team... let's say for instance, she got down with Def Jam...Roc...umm Scott Storch or Rockwilder...I mean somebody STREET...not just ENTERTAINING...she would have surpassed other femcees...she was hotter that Remy, Remy just got good production.
