It's funny because the people that won and didn't show up all seem to really respect their craft and are all talented and deserving of their awards. Maybe they are tired of the bullsh*t artist that BET pushes, you know the cute faces, big-butt but no honest singing ability R&B Chicks, or the Studio Gangster (Crash Dummies) rappers that stay in heavy rotation. As good as the show was with all of the legendary performances what will be most remembered is Beyonce shaking her ass in Terrence Howard's face, not her singing ability, her ass-shaking ability. This is what BET caters to, this is all they show, so if I were a self-respecting artist I don't think I would have attended either. One

About the Miriah comment...some of my friends said the same thing. She looked sort-of tipsy. Anyway though, in my opinion, she sang that song better than anyone else could(yeah, i'm a Miriah fan). But I enjoyed the show, especially Will Smith giving Jada a lap dance. Did anyone see the way Terrence was looking at Beyonce while she was dancing for him? OH yeah, I think it's a good thing that Destiny's Child is retiring because on BET, all they (the other memhers of D.C.) hear is Beyonce, Beyonce, Beyonce, and I think that it is about time Beyonce seperates. She can't give her full potential with Michelle and Kelly (sort of like Omarion and B2K)

The Mike Jones performance would have been cool...had not 50 people in their crew joned them on stage. And what were some of them doing? I guess it's safe to say it wasn't choreographed. One thing I am not an avocate for is putting people on payroll who don't work. There is a thin line between charity and scrubbing. Fact is, the titanic was a beautiful ship. But none one stayed on board when it went under.

Let me first respond to the comments made by 2pistols. Though I do agree that Iam tired, as are alot of ppl, of some of the b.s. that goes on in the music industry. But we have different opinions about what b.s. is. He referenced Ciara, or Ciara type artist in his post, and we have to realize that artists all have different roles to play in the industry. Ciara makes good music (with the help of Jazzy) and is a good dancer. She is an entertainer who knows her place. As long as she doesnt go off trying to hit Whitney-esque high notes, she is fine for what she does. Ashanti on the other hand is trash because she tries to sing and just can't.
You also said that the show will be most remembered for Beyonce's ass shaking. I think a show that opened up with a Fugees reunion performance and ended with Lauryn Hill not performing for reasons unexplained, Beyonce's ass shaking is notthe major moment that will stick with me. Yes there were memorable moments, but I will most rememebr teh show for being too damn long. And it was unreasonably long: Most people can't remember who won awards because there were very few awards given out. If you look at just music, there are more categories for urban music than there were on the B.E.T. awards. Hell, in the age of producers why was there not an category for producers on the show? Did we really need to see several people perform more than once?

All of this is not related to the original topic. As for the awards given where people were not there, that is just part of the business. Jamie Foxx, Regina King and Denzel Washington were all filming movies; that is to be expected. Sidenote: how the hell did Regina King win the award? Serena Williams is watching sister Venus at Wimbledon. Sidenote: how dis Serena win that award when this has been her worse year; she has barely been able to compete, has not been competetive, and has dropped horribly in the standings. If we are going to have a panel of experts, they should do a better job. Kanye West should not have been nominated because his songs were too old; b.t.w. thank you BET for showing the "safe" version of the Jesus Walks video. I do not recall off the top of my head who else was not there, but perhaps they didnt want to sit through an 3.5 hour concert and comedy show which occassionaly gave an award out. Perhaps they just had prior engagements, or perhaps they were at home watching the NBA draft.

This is to Big Daddy X-Kalibur, you're right for me the most memorable part of the show was the Fugees reunion and I am not trying to knock anybody for what they do. As a musician I think I have reached my limit with people using Sex Appeal or fake ghetto stories just to sell music and these same people have the audacity to want to be legends, Gladys Knight is a legend, Stevie Wonder is a legend and their talents shine brighter than any media hype ever could. I gotta give props to TI and The Game for having very professional and classy sets, Mary Rocked it and the all girl band with Sheila was dope. As for the dancers who have albums, just do a better job on the lip-sync. Pissed Off!!! I was pissed off when the people who won awards didn't show up, that's just straight up disrestpect. Lets get real folks, BET as a Black Oriented network has cashed it's chips in loooong ago. For me it's gotten to the point where I can barely watch any of their programs becuase it's either the same shit over and over again or it's last years shit recycled and repackaged.

On a side note, I happen to enjoy the BET Award show when they air b/c it's done with alot more flavor than the others even though the majority of the actual award recipients are flavor of the month jumpoffs it's still cool to see them on stage. All of that aside, BET has lost it's steam in trying to really add to Black Culture.

It's gotten to the point where I cant even watch Rap City anymore! WTF! I think BET has just given up on their people or at least thier constituents, the young black viewer.

We as black people don't even know our heritage and most can only trace it back to a continent. But that is fine. Now i will say that some of the things that people do I am against because they turn the most negative thing into something that is commercially cool. It is not like it is his duty to be there, and no one knows what emergency or prior commitment he made. I, too was disappointed by the BET awards. After having such a great show last year (performance wise) I felt that Tuesday's show while well intentioned lacked the polish and cohesiveness of last year's show. Last year there was no problem with people showing up for their awards why is that?
Anyone watching the Fugees perform could tell that Lauren was clearly off- her voice is 1000x better than that. She clarified it by saying they got a little over zealous in rehearsal and I can see that. She hasn't been performing on the regular and I'm sure the stress and strain on her vocals cords took their toll. In any event, since that was the lead off you expected a great show. I loved Will & Jada- they kept it true to their image. Loved the little exchange with Queen Latifiah and Anthony Anderson & the "Set it Off" girls- hot! Nice touch.
I think I was impressed by DC's performance just because they didn't lipsync. The Lap dance of course will be the topic all day long- especially the look of Terence Howard's face, LOL.
Serena Williams won because much like in the tradition of the NAACP awards (which by the way had a banging show last time)- Serena and Venus are really the only female athletes garnering worldwide media attention. We're not in an Olympic year where we can run off the entire Women's track team and have our community recognize them, so they safe bet was Serena.

I give praises to Teena Marie for her inspired and moving tribute to Rick James. The memorials interjected in the show was a nice, classy touch.

The BET network still needs a lot of programing help, and I urge anyone who has a problem with their shows to contact them. Go to their website and let them know: Let them we want to see an expose on Sierra Leone, that we want to see more diversity on the network and not some carbon-copy versions of MTV programing. We can't just sit and criticize without doing something to correct the images/issues that disturb us about the Network. Perhaps Debra Lee will make some inspired changes.

i didnt have a problem with the bet awards this year. A lot of the people i wanted to see werent there. Will and jada do a good job opening up after the fugees. after destiny child the rest of the show was somewhat of a blur.

In the wake of such aftermath since 1999, there is Kanye with so much potential, yet he knows that like Jay-Z, one must at least sell a few good watered down-runs of material just to get a good takeoff and to be able to afford a safe place to land by the time the newer fad takes presidence.

The music awards show, sponsored by whoever, wherever, only started awarding rap categories after rappers' lyrical content portrayed them and those who they represented to be a**es. Only when it was safe to say that the rap genre was full of retards and lucres did anybody see fit to awards those rappers for that. To be successful in the rap genre, the artists practically have to be pariahs. What is Rap coming too and what is to be the future of rap. Will it be like Rock 'N' Roll, abandoned and left to be the dismal toy of those without a cause?

Southern rap has been garbage because the awards shows only started awarding rap that was pointless, and obscure. When Goodie MOb released their "Soul Food" and "Still Standing" albums addressing critical issues, that one would expect a B.E.T. awards or show to appreciate, there was a heck of a lack of concern. Diplomacy can be appreciated on many levels, from the bottom up, but B.E.T. and their 106 & Park show might as well be a Minstrel Show in black face, literally (No Offense).

The same B.E.T. network that boasts their own Nightly News might as well applaud (and they do) Crunk music and other unenlightening, debasing forms of music that inspire people to make or be in the news receiving negative coverage. That is considered the work of an artist (a term used losely by B.E.T.) worthy of an award?

Eminem should have gotten an award for his song "Puke". That's what happens after one ingests a full cup of that.....Whatever is in those cups. We weren't aware that the new owner of B.E.T. was other than the B in B.E.T. Well, we guess that explains the lack of focus since it is now just Entertainment Television. Go figure.

This years BET awards was dissapointin to me.I thought the fugees was nice but the longer it went the more i realized that L-Boogie aint got it no more.She was the shit,now,anyway the fact that no one was there made it more about performances which were not "off the meter" as they were promoting it to be.I thought MTV's award shows were lame and full of filler material but after watchin this, they both are shitty.They tried to do to much in my opinion with all the acts.I was bored and unimpressed.Whatever man........

I gotta comment on this...first off I'm like all here who were overall disapointed in the BET Awards. It was really a waste of 3 hours beause only bout 30 minutes of it was worth watchin. But some here have made comments about tha South...and being from tha south, let me be tha first to say that we still wasn't happy wit tha way we were represented. Don't get me wrong, Mike Jones did his thang (and that's how we do it in tha durrty damnit...a whole lotta niggaz gettin crunk on stage. Only difference is in tha south....tha audience be just as crunk so it all goes together perfectly, that audience just looked lost for tha most part.) TI was on point, but U gotta realize that we really just gettin our chance to shine. For years BET and MTV for that matter were strictly East Coast/West Coast oriented. We didn't get no love...U never saw 8Ball & MJG, 3-6 Mafia, UGK, and other southern artist gettin they video's played like they did Jay Z, Nas, and Puffy shit! And what really pisses me off is that now that we finally gettin some light shed on us...it's all Lil Jon, Usher and Ludacris. I'm happy they gettin they shine on, but there are a lotta talented artist in tha south who got some real shit to say and not sayin shit cause "it makes a catchy chorus"(Al Kapone & Mr. Sche from Memphis TN Representin hard as hell) who ain't gettin no media attention. Basicly all I'm sayin is Every Coast has sumthin to offer, and we as a people have to let it be made known that we tired of seeing the same shit day after day, year after year.

I thought that the BET awards Sucked!!!!!!!!!. NOBODY showed up for their awards, I'm tired of Omarion and Ciara and their body popping, pop locking asses Damn let that shit go. I fell asleep in the middle and woke up. What happened to that unforgettable Lauryn Hill performance. BET needs to come correct agn next year. The preshow was better. THUMBS DOWN big time for the BET awards this year.

Did I miss something??? I Tivo'ed the first showing of the award show, reviewed it thrice, and didn't see the Mike Jones performance. Did they cut it out and put it back in another showing? Very strange. Anyway, here's my $0.02:
Destiny's Child Performance: The will never live that down- everyone will want lapdances and dammit I expect one at the last concert.
Omarion Performance- Tricks are for kids and lip syncing sucks but his choreographer is dope.
T.I. performance- Any performance with anyone who has played live with Prince should have been alot better than that.
Mariah's performance- She's amazing- but this night she was only mildly amazing.
John Legend and Stevie Wonder's performance- OK, I have this rule. When Stevie is on, you shut the **** up or I'll help you. This night Stevie didn't sound so great and IMO Joh Legend sounds much better. I HATED to say that.
The Game's Performance- OK at best but I thought it was big of him not to bring his feud into performance.
Missy Eliot's performance- Again, lip syncing stinks and topless fat people on stage is such a cliche since Big Pun and Fat Joe did it many moons ago.
The Fugees- Wyclef knows how to give a performance (why was his guitar out of tune?) but what was wrong with Lauryn? It's like they were back in the studio and Wyclef was smacking her around again. Sentiment for old times maybe? I hope the crowd's love was just overwhelming for her and she puts the energy into a forthcoming super fugees album.
Will and Jada- They made a great comedy duo but shouldn't host an awards show as a couple again.
Gladys tribute- nice but she worked harder than the singers paying tribute :(
Tributes to Ossie Davis and ODB- These were akwardly placed in the show and the Wu-Tang Clan should have come more prepared to honor their fallen.
It seems like there was a great deal of diva-tude in the performances with artists trying to outdo their peers; T.I. needed to change clothes have a live band and pyrotechnics, Omarion needed to descend sub-stage (so awkard at 0.0000005 mph, right?), Missy with her multi-layer, cameo'ed out show, Mariah and her South Pacific themed set (of which she didn't even grace more than 3 feet laterally). There must have been so much pressure from last years show that the coordinators and performers felt like they needed to go over the top. Last year's show was soooooo much better than this years. I'd go as far as to say it was the best awards show ever performance-wise and the best Black awards show in a long time as far as presentation on a whole. I guess the bar was set to high.

OO! ooo! I almost forgot! OK Jamie Foxx said on the NAACP awards only a few months ago: "Black people make sure you show up for your awards. Black people will support you when no one else will." (Maybe not a direct quote but something to that effect) What hypocrisy! Rewind the show and watch- the audience just KNEW Jamie Foxx was there as they stood up, turned around and look for Jamie to pop out of his seat and win his award. Any movie now would stop production for Jamie to go out to the awards show for a night. I can only hope there was some sort of political boycott of Viacomm or something to keep most of the prestigious away from the show. If the Trumpet Awards weren't so boring, I'd have to boycott BET's awards shows for the next few years.

I agree, Today's singers just do not have any talent. LEt's face it, its all about having a pretty face and light skinned in order to make it in the music industry today. Beyonce is not talent and I am here to say that no i am not jealous and I do have a nice body. Let's face it The only reason that Beyonce has gotten as far as she did is because of her looks and flaunting her assets in front of the camera that is not talent that is whorish, slutty you name it.

Now Ciara does not have a fantastic voice she has a light voice but she has something to back her up . She has brains , good dancing skills and she is an articulate young lady. SHe has a lot of growing up to do but she is only 19 and I say that she has accomplished a lot for a nineteen year old. HEr performance with Missy Elliott was off the hook. SHe did very very well.

When Beyonce was in Destiny's Child before she went solo, she was getting a lot of attention. NOt because of her body, but because everyone had witnessed the struggles she went through (changing members and facing all the critisim and then coming out with a hit song "Survivior" and "Independent Women"). When she came out with Crazy n Love, then she started getting more attention. Her assets bought her to the level she is in now, her talent got her 50% there. And I will agree, her booty is probably the reason she gets more attention than the other 2 D.C. members, but to round it off, I believe that she can sing and if you watch her videos, she is not always shaking her behind in the cameras. Just becuase you see her in a swimsuit on "Cater 2 U" doesn't mean she's whorish or slutty. She's not even showing that much skin and you don't even see her backside. So the only reason Beyonce got that far is because of her talent, her assets just gave her a boost. Beyonce is a lady, not a whore.

BET (Barely Entertaining Telvision) the BET awards was worst show ever next to Rap City da Bassment, Student Center, Boring Ass comic view, Bet.com, 106 and Park, and etc.. For BET to say they want black people to grow up and be something they show some of the most unintelligent shows. I prefer to watch MTV at least they entertain me. If they want us to support them they need to support some of the black shows being cancelled for lack of viewing audience. They could at least pick up Girlfriends to show at a decent time.

I think the award show was off the chain. I like the way the Fugees were dressed - I loved the way Lauren was dressed with her throwback pants. And I loved the way she danced.

That said I am so pissed off at every1 who didnt show up. Even SHAQ didnt show up for Chrissakes.

It was mainly the MEN who didnt show up for their awards. Most of the women showed up. Also note - the people who showed up for their awards were performing or presenting awards.

This must have an organized boycott for every1 2 have missed it.

Yes,the best performance was Omarion out of all.which I can say he did do his thing on the stage after the group went separate ways.When I say boys and gurls i mean boys and gurls was diggin the performance omarion did his moves was like that.He is the best person I `ve ever seen that can dance like he did on the BET 2005 Awards.

WHY WAS Beyonce' shaking her behind all willy-nilly all over the place in in every other dude's face? She hasn't even been that sexually explicit or seductive when she ever performed on stage with Jay-Z. Jay-Z was SUPPOSED to have enough money so that she doesn't have to go to all those extremes exploiting herself like that. Maybe Beyonce AND Jay-Z are just selling records because of their names being paired together despite a lackluster relationship that they are purported to be engaged in.

Maybe "Moment Of Clarity" was a rebuttal by Sean Carter versus the markettable image of Jay-Z and every album after "Reasonable Doubt" was sold because people removed Sean's doubt that he could sell people their OWN hopes and dreams of temporary decadence. "Reasonable Doubt" was the conscious of Sean Carter, and THAT was why "Reasonable Doubt" the album and that song "Soon You'll Understand" are some of Sean's tightest materialEven Sean Carter was like he saw that movie and he knew how it ended. We can respect Jay-Z and his music withoutgoing to have better awards shows until you have a greater variety of music and music with greater and lasting integrity versus POP that explodes and depreciates over time. First off, with Will Smith, and his minimally talented, tagalong wife (and i am using the term wife rather loosely, in this instance) Jada steering thangs--who, by they way, I'd bet Bob Johnson's billions that their continuing, unfunny spoof of the Brad Pitt /Angelina Jolie movie Mr.and Mrs. Smith probably went over the heads of most viewers-- there was no way for the show to go but downhill fast.

Gladys ---AMAZING!!! What a relief it was when she finally took the stage, and relieved Toni Braxton and Faith Evans of their singing duties, and took the mic and rocked the house ole skool style.
