A school near Chicago is making students sign a pledge promising that they won't engage in illegal or inappropriate actions on MySpace. ABC News has a video on the story.
Though it sounds like an invasion of privacy, schools have the legal right to to punish students who are creating an "unsafe environment" even if it's outside of the school. However, just because the school has the right, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.
I went on to some of the MySpace pages from high school students in that district to see what type of "unsafe environments" they were creating. First I saw that The Wifehas (probably not her real name) from Vernon Hills High School called Jeremy a "trifflin' hoe" in his comment section. That's certainly not the type of behavior that should be tolerated in Community High School District 128.
On The Wifehas' page another student name "Jigga" left this comment: "Im sure it has, ive been doing some whicked squats lately". I'm not sure what all that slang means, but it's probably code for, "Let's have unprotected sex tonight, then pray". District 128 shouldn't tolerate either of those actions. I suggest suspending both students.
It's hight school! Lets face if most kids start having sex at age 14. If they don't post it on Myspace, they'll just post it somewhere else.

What she does in her private time is her business. Were they banning people from Blackplanet, MiGente, Facebook, Tag World? Why MYSPACE?
These parents need to know that these kids are in school being bullies and other ish undercover. If they want to post it on the web, LET THEM! That way it'll be out in the open, and we will know what's really going on. Other than that, I think that MYSPACE is what it is for different people. It's a great way to network. I link up with old school mates all the time.

How bout the school focus on whats going on WITHIN its walls and let parents be responsible for their kids after 3. Somebody else - this time a school - is always overstepping their boundaries into the parental realm of responsibility and then when they fuck it all up, the parents that are lazy and dont wanna do their job just sit around and blame that entity for failing. Schools, mind ya business and FORCE these parents to turn off the Oxygen network and that Pistons game and raise they damn children. If ya kids are on some bullshit when they are on Myspace or any other site, shake they asses. Schools got more important things to do, like fuckin up our kids state test scores. So a guy is talkin about workin out and the district interprets that as wanting to have unprotected sex and wants to suspend both students this is rediculous why does everything that students do have to be gang related, or drug related how many of our rights are taken away from us by authority figures at school because they are making judgements about our culture without any proof or knowlegde of what they are talking about in my opionioin a district employee should know the defferece between a work out temr and something with sexual conotation so is the real problem myspace or the districts employment guidelines cause this guy obviously is not very bright

As an educator, I have to say they're wrong for punishing kids for what they do outside of school. Block MySpace? Fine. Punish them for what they post from school grounds? Cool. However, I see no precedent for punishing them for what they do outside of school.
With that said, this stuff is dangerous. I looked at the girl's page, and she's made some cardinal mistakes. Let's assume her picture is real. On the page, her friends list her name repeatedly. One of her friends cites where she will be at a specific date and time ("lacrosse Wednesday night"). Someone could easily find her without saying word one to her based merely on what is on that front page.
Giving people freedom is one thing, but there's a reason why Internet sickos are able to do what they do. Rather than this pledge, perhaps they need to teach these kids how to properly handle the Internet (quick rules - no pictures, no real names, no contact information, and keep any log of what you do and how you do it in areas that are not public, or at least are not immediately visible).

First...My Space ROCKS! Second, I have a My Space and I don't use it to hook up with other people and all that ISH. I mean, seriously...TO EACH IT'S OWN! However, I do use it to keep in contact with my FAMILY around the world.
