Nike Goes Overboard With Lebron James Commercials

Lebron James.jpg

Somehow Lebron James' Cavs have the Detroit Pistons on the brink of elimination from the NBA Playoffs. Yet even though their series ain't over yet, there is a clear winner in this game - Nike Basketball.

With all their "We are all witnesses" spots during every game break, I feel like this playoff broadcast is really a long Nike commercial, featuring a basketball game every once in a while. In typical Nike fashion the commercial is way over the top and dramatic. They show the city of Cleveland preparing for the Cavs in the playoffs by painting their children's faces with Lebron's jersey number and proudly showing off their "witness" t-shirts. Walk into the living room at the wrong moment and you'd think this was a religious cult prepping for the arrival of their saviour.

But that's probably what Nike's trying to get across.

What do ya'll think of this commercial?

Have you seen this nigga play.

Lebron James is a musical genius.

Ya'll wasn't talking that shit when Jordan was around.
Let NIKE give this nigga his props cause if they win the title you will have to shut the phuck up.

Lebron is the next NBA show and prover

i dunno.. maybe your not a labron fan... but I'm sure if you were to visit Cleveland and it's sorrounding cities, you'll probably see that they're all caught up in the hype..
and why not.. Labron is becoming a hometown hero... why not celebrate it.. even if it's Nike supplying the party favorites...
Besides the NBA needs another star to bring back the fans they have lost in the past years and IMO Labron is spearheading a renaissance of good 'ol fashion fundenmentally sound basketball.
and this is coming from a Boston Celtic fan.

LeBron needs to learn how to play on the ball defense to become an all around player. I won't compare him to MJ because it's not fair to either one. I figure once LeBron learns the whole game, he'll be able to will his team to a championship.
BTW, amyone from OHIO? Wassup with the dude Ray Cash? Philly is bumpin' that jawn "Bumpin' My Music" and there's this version that has Jay-Z, Scarface, and Bun-B on it. That shit is FIRE!!!!

Posted by: skdamc at May 18, 2006 3:39 PM

Truth be told Lebron James has some areas he can improve in namely defense but that being said he is still the best player in the NBA right now!!!

Tell me one person in the NBA you would
trade for him. Nobody!!!

That being said let the king reign and
let Nike proclaim his arrival to the world.

Whoa!! whoever wrote this Article is just a true hater...The Pistons are happy that they're playing the Cavs...this is all about lebron..no1 cares about Rash!t wallace or ben, or chauncey, or rip...if it wasnt for lebron & the cavs, the pistons would still be playing on NBATV..but since they're playing the CAVS (cuz every1 wanna see lebron) they get to be seen on ESPN, TNT, & ABC..its about lebron not the pistons

Posted by: khris at May 18, 2006 11:44 PM

A even though I am from Columbus, OH its still good to see that Cleveland is doin it big. I mean there was a lot of people that thought that the Cavs would lose to the Pistons in the first 4 games and I have to be real I did not think they would make it this far. Then u got Ray Cash holdin down the city and his song "Bumpin my Music" is doing it big. Then Bone Thugs is comin back out so its not just lookin good for Cleveland but all of Ohio.

Lebron James isn't just the new Jordan, he is the new greatest basketball player of all time.

Believe it, learn it, witness it.

King James

Posted by: tc at May 19, 2006 8:20 AM

All I will say is no defense and no hand check rule. The NBA rules on this guy is a joke. Touch him foul, knock another guy in the face..no call. He is not the next Magic, MJ or Larry Bird. He is in the group of "hopeful" players Kobe, Grant Hill, KG and Vince Carter. Them guys all had the hype and when they relaxed the rule Kobe scores what MJ did right but look at the defense in the league now. Today's players are great athelets but bad students of the game. MJ is the best. Lebron couldn't hold Oscar Roberysons jock strap. The league needs to promote the franchise not franchise Lebron. If he fails off the court or on it the NBA will still keep sliding in the likeablity status. They need to not start rookies and put them throught the D-league with old school coaches and assistant coaches who teach the game the right way. Jordan had all the fundlementals when he stepped in the league. Every summer he worked on his body to become stronger and also work on a defensive and offensive move to introduce the next year after his 8th year no one could touch him. 8 years and he is the best to have done it. Nike needs a face with some game, that is just business. The players need to master the game inside in out because really European players are better at the stlye a game institued now. Finesse ticky tack west coast ball. The real game is from the East coast with hard sets and stingy defense. New York has one of the old time greats and they won't to fire him. You could sit all the greatest coaches from any error and they couldn't get through that bunch. They really need a team leader and keep the intergrity of the locker room from the eyes of the world. Meaning when your feels get hurt don't go snitching to the media. A after Lebron gets a rap sheet he has to do the Kobe PR thing then you will look for your next idol to bow down to. Detroit is getting robbed now because the refs are calling the game lop sided. New Jersey should have won and Detroit should "have won" see what I tell you this is going to 7 with the statment at big nose Lebron "stuttering Lebron" will be back next year. But the media markets really want to see Lebron and Wade in the East finals And Dallas and Phoniex. Those are what the money machines want. This game sucks and so do these ppl crying for a next Jordan. There is no next Jordan their will be another great player and this guy ain't it. Beside the next great player will be from Carolina....just watch...just watch. HOLLAR.

NBA is phixed, thatz right, phixed. They need a great player rivalry and since carmello aint going to be in the finals no time soon, the league wants lebron to go up against d-wade. they had a great head-to-head match up during the season, both scoring 40 points and lebron scored more and got the trip-dub and the win.

detroit hasn't been playing that poorly, but the league knows Sheed wallace is the key to the pistons' success. (anybody knows that, when he came to Detroit, they immediately became a contender) The refs are putting Sheed out of commission with fouls, and if he is riding the bench, then detroit sucks. Sheed had 3 fouls, 5 fouls, and 6 fouls (fouled out) in all the the cavs' wins.

if sheed dont play, pistons lose! im no witness! d-wade is better than bron bron. check the resume nigga!

To Bird,

Coming from a girl who loves ball and both players.

Lebron is the better player overall, because he is not a ball hog like "give me the ball" Kobe. When comparing the two, yes both can make those game winning shots and both have very good ball handle, but who wants to see a whole game with only one guy making the shots. At least Lebron assists during the game to help get the W. Just take the last game against Detroit, who passed the ball to win. Kobe is just in it for himself

Posted by: Da Dank at May 19, 2006 11:38 AM

This is an interesting topic. I actually like Lebron but I think he's a few years off from greatness. He has all the tools at an earlier age than Jordan. LBJ just needs to work on understanding the defensive side of the game. From an offensive standpoint, he allows the game to come to him and trusts his teammates.

As far as Nike goes, it has been awhile since a player lived up to all the hype. The shoe game is about being associated with a winner and Lebron certainly embodies a champion minus the rings to show for his greatness. If you think this is bad, wait until Bron-Bron wins a ring. Nike is going to change their name to James Athletics.

I agree with the statement that someone made about the rules being changed to suit the teams who run more. Teams like the Spurs, Pistons, and Clippers are not sexy match ups for the NBA Finals. I have seen a number of questionable calls throughout the playoffs. I am particularly upset because the refs are not allowing the Spurs to play their smothering style of defense. Nowitski has flopped more than usual and one game he went to the foul line over 20 times. None of the NBA Legends got that many calls...

Posted by: The Truth at May 19, 2006 11:49 AM

Whoever said that Michael Jordan was overrated is crazy.

The only person better than MJ was Bill Russell. Bill had 10 rings. Jordan only has six.

But Lebron is the best thing since Jordan. No knock on Kobe, because he's up there too.

Posted by: Chevy G. Hustle at May 19, 2006 11:52 AM

Some of yall are some real haters!!!!
First Lebron is not better than MJ whoever said that is dumb as phuck!
however at age 21 lebron is better than MJ at 21, I give you that. But if you think LB is better than MJ you obviously don't see how much every other player other than Pippen,Rodman(who can't score) and Horace grant sucked and were never heard from again.
and you can't compare Lebron to Kobe?
their great players but Lebrons gift is passing and Kobe gift is scoring. And if LA ever had a real freaking pt guard he wouldn't have to hog the ball. Be serious LA has no bench and acouple of players that shouldn't be in the league. I'd drop 20 on that team and I can barely tap(the jumpers wet though!)
when he scored 81 they were losing till he went nuts dropped 55 in the 2nd half.
haters!! you can't compare em
everyone prefers a passer over a scorer So I look at like this. Its about need if your building a team and you really need scoring and have a good pt gd. you'd be a fool to take Lebron over Kobe. Scoring does help alot because it makes weak players and shooters get better & more open shots. Look at bill cartwright, bill wennington toni kukoc and Luc Longley. think about that big contract Derek Fisher got. Now notice Smush Parkers numbers trust me he still sucks!

Last the Commercial is hot and the reason it's still on going is because Lebron is having success in the playoffs if he was struggling they'd discontinue the ads. I love Lebron the kids a freek of nature. Before the playoffs he was talented player who could pass his azz off. Now I see him learning how to win. The refs suck but can't be madd at him! stop hatin if he was in your hometown you'd be thrilled. Big up to cleveland, its been a long time for cleveland to get excited about basketball.
When its all said and done Lebron Kobe will be legends. Why cause their both winners. I don't see that in alot of other players.
and someone needs to force him to do the Dunk contest. If you can grab a quarter of the top of the backboard then there somethings you can do people haven't seen yet.

Posted by: Banga! at May 19, 2006 12:13 PM

Face the facts..Lebron is the truth...no other person has accomplished what he has in such a short time...can u imagine a highschool kid that was able to turn around an NBA franchise in 1 year?? not even garnett was able to do that...

now about teh jordan thing..jordan is the man..no one can deny that and all the other players that are being compared to him are not on his level as of yet and most likely will never get there...if they were..we would not be talking about lebron..

I hope they beat detroit cause I can't stand them but lets face it..bron is the truth..

Betta then Jordan?? This must be the 18 and under blog. Its so much blasphmy on here yall should be Stoned! Dude can play, we all can see that. Put him back in Jordans day and he maybe top 10, bottom top 10. The NBA yall see today aint the same as it was 10 years ago. They actually played defense and still scored 100 points. 10 yrs from now yall might be able to say he on jordan level. The league tryna make him a poster boy, but I hear yall talkin. When he do what Jordan did { championships, gold medals, defeat every great player of his time} then yall might have a point. Oh by the way, Jordan aint Nike, dude a brand. A 100 mil a year brand. Dallas can ONLY score by freethrows in the 4th quarter (and still gets bullshit calls to win games against the champs). LeBron is becoming the new Jordan in more ways than one.

Why is Dallas giving San Antonio (I'm a Spurs fan) so much hell after getting rid of Nash? Devin Harris is the reason. He has Tony Parker's speed, willingness to play defense, and decent mid-range jumper.

Nash is not better than LBJ. Bron can play the 1,2,3 positions on the floor.

Phil the Zen master told MJ one time there is no I in team and MJ said yeah but there is in WIN now after all is said and done I seen earlier say he smashed everone Thomas MAGIC in the finals made countless game winners and what was it his NO HEART self ripped Utahs heart out of there ass sicker than a dog IN UTAH no less... Please Poeple lets all watch Labron james and have fun. the next jordan tag always is applied cuz it catches peoples eye and makes money. I remember when SLAM mag went so far(look it up) ran a cover of GHiLL thatsaid " just like Mike only better." mind you MJ was still in the league... after that blasphamy MJ went in to the playoffs that year and swept Hill pistons and hill went to shit after that. Injuries, money, and cocaine could out right destroy James tommarow I hope it dont hes great to watch and about the only highlight left of the Shell of what we used to call the NBA. Rings dont only do it Bill Russell was surrounded by greats MJ had Scottie and the Master and role players. Ill give HGrant and Rodman there props. Dude that listed MJs accomplishments reppin CHI dont forget the TEAM records that'll be there for ever 2 3peats in 8 years, and it woulda been 8 had he not retired, 1996 72-10... shit like that. and all we can do about James is speculate and wait and see. Hes at least gotta win 6. anything less?? WOULD BE UNCIVILIZED!! jaja

so everyone have fun...

im not a big lebron james fan but i will admit he is a great player but nothing like patrick Ewing, Michael Jordan and Julius Erving. and for the record the four best players in the NBA are Kevin Garnet, Steve Nash, Vince Carter and Dwayne wade lebron james has nothing on all four of those players.

Lebron, in his third year, is better and younger than MJ in his third year.

You sound like a hater.

These are the first NBA playoffs that I've been interested in since the MJ era. I like what cats like Lebron, Wade and Brand are bringing to the game.

If you're not feeling it, don't wear his shoes or watch his commercials. I'll be rocking those LJ IVs though. They are heat indeed.

TO ANSWER YOUR FIRST QUESTION... FOR KOBE...YES!!!!! YOUR IN L.A. AND YOU DONT EVEN BACK YOUR BOY... ITS CLEAR THAT KOBE IS ON MJ'S LEVEL...
AND IF YOUR ONLY ARGUMENT WILL STILL BE THAT WE ARE 13 YEAR OLD KIDS AND WE ARE IDIOTS.. DONT EVEN RESPOND..LOL
KOBE BRYANT IS THE NEXT "HEIR" TO THE THRONE.. ITS NOT ABOUT JORDAN... ITS ABOUT WHO IS THE BEST.. WHO IS SITTING IN THE THRONE.. PEOPLE ARENT AS DUMB AS YOUR MIND SOMEHOW DREAMS UP.. WE KNOW THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER JORDAN.. BUT SHHT KOBE BRYANT IS ABOUT AS GOOD AS JORDAN... THATS RIGHT I SAID IT... THEY DIDNT GO TO THE SECOND ROUND.. BUT SHHT... KOBE GOT THEM IN THE PLAYOFFS. JUST AS M J USED TO DO... AND IF YOU DONT RECOGNIZE OR REMEMBER THAT.. THEN YOUR PROLLY TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER MICHAEL JORDAN AS A WHOLE CAREER

ITS PLAIN AN CLEAR TO ME..
THAT THE NBA.. AND THE REFS.. ARE OUT TO MAKE LEBRON THE BEST AT ALL COSTS..
LETS SEE WHAT MISTAKE LEBRON WILL MAKE THIS TIME.. BUT HAVE THE REFS BAIL HIM OUT BY SUPPOSEDLY NOT SEEING IT.. THE LAST SEVERAL GAMES I WATCHED THIS 29 YEAR OLD MAN (WHO CALLS HIMSELF 21) F*CK UP IN THE LAST MINUTES WHERE IT SHOULD COST THE CAVS THE GAME.. BUT THE REFS WILL LET HIM TRAVEL.. GO OUT OF BOUNDS... TIP THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS.. I SEEN HIM GOALTEND ON THE LAST REBOUND OF A GAME... AND PROLLY JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER VIOLATION.. AND THE REFS STILL WONT CALL SHHT ON THIS GUY...
BUT ALL IN ALL.... I DONT WANT TO SEE BORING AZZZ DETROIT OR BORING AZZ SAN ANTONIO IN THE FINALS.. EITHER ONE OF THEM... THEY BOTH ARE THE MOST BORING TEAMS... EXCEPT FOR MABEY RASHHED.. TEYSHAUN PRINCE.. AND MANU GINOBLI .. THEY ARE TWO BORING AZZ TEAMS

i was born in cleveland and then moved to chicago when i was 11. when i think of basketball all i think of MJ sinking game winner after winner when i really loved the Mark Price led cavs. MJ is the best ever and yea the NBA is different now..but people Lebron is only 21. he's only going to get better. look at how much kobe has improved since he entered the nba. kobe was garbage like his first three years. Bron bron will learn how to play defense; he will become an even better passer; he will become a better shooter; but will he be better than MJ? only time can tell that. But of course right now he's no where near Jordan...we're graspping at his potential upside because he's only 21. No one will ever accomplish what MJ did..but does that mean a better player won't come along...of course someone better will eventually come...is that person Lebron? Possibly...possibly not. Let's just let him play the game and compare 10years from now. My guess is that the argument will be the same..that MJ is the greatest and Lebron didn't quite reach him.....(oh and don't forget Kobe..he may become the greatest scorer the nba has ever seen..and one of the best defenders..he won't reach MJ though)

Posted by: DOOM at May 22, 2006 10:53 AM

LBJ is not the next MJ he is the first LBJ. Kobe's punk ass is a carbon sloppy clone of Mike, which is why he'll never be considered as great as Mike. LBJ has his own identity which is why he'll be the next greatest. His numbers will kill Mike's but he still won't get the 6 Chips to make him the greatest ever.

For years they looked for the next Mike, the next Zeke, Magic, Bird, Dr. J., Oscar Robertson, but they never got him, all they got was just the 1st whover's.

Nike portrayed MJ as God, and now they are portraying LBJ as Jesus. And in the basketball culture this is not blasphemy it's just true.

And Detroit will beat Miami in 6. GuaranSheede!!!

Detroit vs. Dallas for the Chip, Dallas in 7.

Sure would've been nice to see Labron in it though.

Posted by: Scott Free at May 22, 2006 11:15 AM

Posted by: 100% real nigga at May 22, 2006 12:15 PM

LeBron is a fucking sham. Dude can't spell defense, the only reason they got those wins against Detroit (not a pistons fan) was because the refs felt the need to call a foul everytime someone looked at "king james" too hard. I'll take Kobe over any of these guys. We saw how good the Lebrons were when the refs stopped calling bogus fouls- 61 pts.

Y'all don't know shit! Niggas, if it'aint fer MJ, Magic, Bird, Dr. J, Kareem, The Stilt, then there wouldn't be a Labron). Phuck bitches Labron and those other hacks got nothin! on those other playas. If we had the same hype back then then shit Labron would just be a footnote right now. MJ is and forever will be the BEST . <-- PERIOD! It was all about D back then, fundamentals, and team work. Though MJ did carry the Bulls to all those championships, it was still a team effort. Case in point where's Kobe now? That's right walking over to the 9th hole.

The LeBron James hype is part of basketball as a business. It's a marketed product just like everything else you see. Nike is a $13 billion dollar a year world company that markets athletes and performance apparel. LeBron is a great athlete that helps Nike make all those billions. Nike is smart, LeBron is the reigning Dunkadelic Mega-Star of basketball, and everyone else is a "Witness."

Posted by: Derrick E. Vaughan at June 13, 2006 1:20 PM

"King James" is overrated...there is no way he is better then MJ>..and to be quite honest the only player that i have seen emerge in the last 10 years that even comes close....the man...the FLASH....Dwayne Wade baby!!!

Posted by: Juli at June 21, 2006 5:26 PM

Kobe is WAY closer to MJ than ANY of them. Hes been an All-Star More, More Rings, Been Criticised more(Like Jordan in his early years in case you forgot) AND has been on All-Defensive teams. Lebron is F*CKING OVERRATED. End Of Discussion.

D-Wade is good. Not much fault in his game but he dosent have HALF the all-around game Kobe does(3 Pointer, DEFENSE, Clutch)

All or good but are no way near Jordan. If anything, Id pick Kobe over Bron and Wade(Yeah, I said it) then pick Wade if KB was taken. But Lebron? NO WAY. If you have to CHEAT to winball games(Something Kobe DOSENT do nor CAN HE due to the way refs have taken a dislike to him, watch Suns/Lakers) then you CANT be considered "A Legend/Great"

All of the fans who boldly claim they "Are Witnesses" are just embarrising their damn selves. When he wins a ring, hell, 3 rings, THEN call yourself a "WITNESS" Until then Bron hasnt proved ANYTHING except he can get away with a walk and 90 Mil.

AND THATS THE TRUTH

the league is in good hands with Kobe and Dwyane, Michael is the best ever, and you Darnell need a hug

oh yea those Nike LeBron commercials are corny and crappy, let alone those fugly sneakers
