Brandy D. I am in agreement with your general sentiment regarding PAC and Big. These two men made an indelible mark on Hip Hop and a generation of music.

However, when I look at the total picture I have to put NAS and Jay Z ahead of Big and Pac for the category of the Best or greatest MC’s. If we are asking the question who is the most consequential MC’s I would have to place Pac in particular as number 1. He was and is the Malcolm X and Marvin Gaye of his generation. He was arguably the most conscious and intelligent M.C. we have ever seen with Chuck D., KRS 1 and Rakim and NAS and some others close on his hills. As for BIG, BIG was a lyrical Acrobatic, only Rakim was better than him lyrically. BIG’s flows were Bananas. But unfortunately as you said they both died when they were 25 years of age. It is their short life span that I must take into consideration when rating the Greatest MCs.

NAS and Jay Z are men who are a half hour away from 40 years of age. As men in their mid to late 30’s they are still the standard that everyone in hip hop try to measure up to when they try to assess their own worth as an MC.

Pound for Pound, yes you are right, Pac and Big are better. Unfortunately, they did not have the time to have the run that NAS and Jay have had. I don’t know of any other two rappers, ever, who had the level of superstar status as NAS and Jay Z while in their mid to late 30’s. Think about this, 50 is the industry biggest star today. If NAS and Jay Z wanted to get revenge they could easily do it. I mean given the strength of their street and general hip hop creditability and their superior MC skills, they could kill 50’s career as an MC almost immediately if they decided to attack. The reality is that NAS want even entertain the thought of battling 50 because he sees this as being beneath him. 50 is just not a worthy opponent for him as Jay Z was. Basically it would be an unfair beef. The same is true for Hov. I mean Game and more blatantly Cam tried to diss. But Jay Z’s attitude is why deal with MC’s who don’t have ¼ of my skills and talents.

Brandy D, it was a tough decision but that how I see it. If BIG and Pac was here and alive today they would be sitting at number 2 not Nas and Hov. In terms of the number 1 spot, no one come Close to “The God” Rakim. Clearly he is number 1.

Em has an incredible flow and delivery. However his lyrical content in terms of his subject matter is wak to me. I am a black man and white domestic-related issues along with dysfuctional family narratives of an impoverished white male does not appeal to me. Dissin your mother and wife on wax is definately some white boy shit. Certainly Em's ability to deliver his story and his word play are impressive. When I look at Rakim, KRS 1, NAS, Ice Cube, PAC, BIG and Hov for years they have me given me stories that I can relate to and club 2. I have no concept of what is to be white trash ( No disrespect intended but this is the story I here from em). I have no concept of what is it like to wish death on my mother. To me this is wak and white.

Rakim on the other hand has better word play and his intellect and conscousness is superior to Em. Pac intellect blows Em completely out of the water.

See, for me you must have content, flow, word play, and delivery. Content is where EM fall short when compared with the great. In fact, if you ask me, I think many people give him a little bit more than they should just because his is white and showned a tremendous ability to spit lyrics. It appears to me at times that the Em whiteness is the hook. Let not descredit him for being white but let also not overcompensate either.

Em appropiate place is about 7 or 8 all times not number 1 unless you are white and can relate to being trash.

I read your earlier post in which I generated a great deal of appreciation for your ability to articulate your thoughts through written expression. However, I could not disagree stronger with your of your characterization of PAC. We must remember that Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Paul Robeson, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr.and countless others had a so-called rap sheet. Pac’s rap sheet and all the others fail in comparison to rap sheet of our oppressors. They are the true rapists, murderers and thieves. Yet, many people follow them. I think we should also be careful to trivialized the contributions of those such as KRS 1 and Chuck D. Before they hit the seen many people had not have any concept of Black consciousness.

Further, when I last check, Em had not contributed anything of substance to Black people. In fact, he gave us one of the biggest Uncle Toms in the History of Hip Hop which is 50 cent (50 is an admitted George Bush lover). Bush prior to being SELECTED president was a prolific Black Male killer as the Governor of Texas. Under his leadership he executed more Black males on Death row than any other Governor. Also under his leadership as a Texas Governor he allowed vicious attacked Dogs to rip the flesh of Black Male inmates…yeah just like he did with the Arabs in Iraq. In you saw his leadership when Blacks were drowning in the filth of Katrina.

Thanks Em for bringing 50 to the forefront! Thanks for setting our people back; that is exactly what we needed in this day and time.

Moving forward; although I admire you’re intelligence and ability to engage in critical thought, I disagree with your characterization of some of our most important artists since the genre hit Black America and subsequently white America and the globe.

Also, Em’s skills are at a level where he should be compared with the greats both today and yesterday. We have the proper instruments and environment to make sure that our findings from the comparison are reliable and valid. We can measure with creditability, one’s content/subject matter, ability articulate and deliver lyrics, longevity, and relevancy to the hip hop community along with other meaningful measurable variables. We can even conduct a regression analysis in just deal with the most important variables to make an assessment of Em, if needed. And just like we measure money through time and periods of inflation we can account for the time period from today through and yesteryear.

So, as a student of hip hop and history, I can never discount the past when making an assessment of anything. Anyone in any entity looks at history to assess the current and predict the future. Anyway, Em is a great hip hop artist but his whiteness is insinuating his greatness when in reality he not at the level many are now trying put him at. Yes a top 10 MC I think at the number 8 spot and that is it (ell maybe 7). Again let give him credit without going overboard and being ridiculous.

We generally agree in princple. When I read your blogs I always agree with 98% of what you say and disagree with 2 percent. Yes, everything you said about Em is true. I never doubted his ability as an MC. I think it is clear he is nice with his. What I objected to is overcompensating him (with props) simply because he is white. I think the truth is probably the knife cuts both ways. Also his subject matter is not appealing to me, however I agree with you Em does play to a larger and more racially diverse audience.

Howard University is an Excellent school with a strong reputation. Many of my nationalist brothers and sisters attended Howard University. They also have a great number of young intellectuals. I salute Patrick Swygert for keeping that school strong and relevant.

Finally, I partly disagree with whiteman is the devil is played comment. While I am not ready to put that on an entire race. It is a profound and serious subject given by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and Nation of Islam that I don't we should charactarized as its played.
