Mass Appeal, in its tenth year and 39th issue, has them Clipse boys on the cover this month. What a good look.

I haven't purchased a Mass Appeal off the stands since they had Eminem and Rakim share a cover. Next month they went with Nas and Large Professor, but after that they gave up using popular artists to sell issues, for whatever reason.
Jon Caraminica gets the Clipse to speak on their frustations with being in rapper limbo, even though the first album did well. It's not just their wack label deal that has them in that floating state. Their Virginia location also has them outside the mixtape and tour circuit that New York, Atlanta, and Houston enjoys. So, even though they can make crack rap anthems with the best of them, it's dudes like Juelz, Jeezy, and Weezy getting all the shine.
On the cover, notice how they take the stars on their jeans and sprinkle them around the photo. Also, as an inside joke for those familiar with the recent drug dealer t-shirts controversy, they blur out the "snow" on the shirt as if Mass Appeal isn't allowed to show it. It's those type of details that makes a cover like this pop.
What do ya'll think?

It's just not Virginia, it's the whole Mid-Atlantic region (DC, Maryland & Virginia) that are outside the mixtape and tour circuit that New York, Atlanta, and Houston enjoy. But please believe DC is next up to bat...
These Dude is nice...I mean they talk about Crack and Guns alot but who dosent...I remember niggas from back in the " Funeral " video days and thought these niggas was dope..They need to drop a new ablum fast cause Santana and Jeezy are FUCKING WACK !! Crack dealers need theme music too.
E-Z !!!
Bklyn all DAY !
The Clipse's last album went hard. I STILL listen to it. Their label needs to quit slow playin, so they can make another tight cd. I'll be 1st in line.
Why does Pharrel put out music every year, and the Clipse just float around waiting for him..
If you ask me they should put out an independent album of their own and stop waiting for their label to help them..
If they did that then their label would pay more attention to them.
Essex is the nicest cat from the bean,..
Check out my page and let me know what you think.
The Clipse have the talent to be the rap group in the game since Run DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, & EPMD in my opinion.
Mass Appeal is that shit. Not only does it have hip-hop features in it, but on all things related.
As for the Clipse, I can't wait to hear what they have to bring to the table. Lord Willin' was fucking bangin'.
I have to agree wit the first person that posted...the DC, MD, Va is so far outside of the mixtape circuit of NY or ATL, it makes no sense. And that is really sad because there are some hot niggas in the MD, DC, VA area spittin shyt that would eat up all that Dipset, G-Unit typical mass media rap we used to hearing (no disrespect to the Unit or Dipset...just making a point). At least VA has the Neptunes and Clipse, people like Quan...just a few little sprinkles every now and then that show up on a NY mixtape. MD (Baltimore rather) just recently got a nigga named Bossman that has shown up on a few Clinton Sparks mixtapes. PG County need ta shine and so does DC. I've been waitin for DC in particular to blow for years but it hasn't happened as of yet...starting to wonder if it ever will?
All this area gets noticed for is singers, but then the singers end up fallin off ....Mario (b-more), Dru Hill (b-more), Mya (pg county), Amerie (DC), ........watch out Trey Songs, Tyra and Chris Brown (all from VA)
I fucks wit clipse its all good cuz we bout to hold it down Im also reppin that whole dc,va,md shit you heard it b4 and u might have seen it on these other blogs but fuck it. www.myspace.com/stealth99 Im tryin to do some damage to this rap game man so let a nigga in
The Mid- East is a soon to be movement. What has to happen is everybody link up and properly rep right. I think if Baltimore and DC can get on the same page, Thats enough to get the people in the area excited about the music thats here. VA been had Artists (Clipse, Skillz, Nottz and DMP, Quan). Notice all of those artits do more traditional Hip Hop, but with their own twist on it. Thats what we gotta do to get to poppin. Also we gotta keep supportin artists when they do get their foot in the door. Like Bossman already getting hated on...We gotta stop that.
@ Tru One...I agree with you on that too. It's a lot of Cats that can spit out here in Bmore, PG, and DC. My man Asi Fury is from Ft. Washington and shorty gets it in. Mully Man had Freeway, Ghostface, Bleek and Geda K on his album and a hot single...Its like just gettin the right exposure to the right artists right now is what gotta happen. The kid Wale he just got signed with Kenny Burns on his new label and they might break it in for DC. Bossman is on SO SO Def. The kid Los(Bmore) just signed to Bad Boy, but who knows what Puff will do, if he does do something with him.
MALICE N PUSHA T, THESE DOODS IS ORIGINALLY FROM THE BRONX AND RELOCATED TO VA. I GOT A LOT OF LOVE FOR BOTH OF THEM AND THEIR RAP ABILITY, THEY ARE BOTH VERY TALENTED AND SHOULD GET WITH A REAL LABEL THAT WOULD PROMOTE THEM THE WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE. EVEN THOUGH DOODS RAP ABOUT CRACK AND GHETTO MISERIES THEY DO IT WITH A UNIQUE STYLE SO KEEP DOIN YA THING HOMIEZ!!! MUCH LOVE TO VA DC AND THE WHOLE MID-EASTERN ATLANTIC 1

Where have you been Essex?...one of the hotest mixtape series out there is "Got it For Cheap"that started the Dope dealer T-Shirt craze...
Yeah, it's not always right that niggas rap about coke, but they are talented dudes. Even listening to a couple of songs you can tell it's not always about slinging that shit, hopefully they can do their thing afer the Re-up
w/ Jive.
And to the cats that say it was Pharrell's fault they couldn't drop, please know it was Pharrell that was willing to give them BEATS and MONEY to free the CLipse, and they (Jive) split up the label, kept the CLipse and didn't know what to do at that point.
Y'all gotta read the whole story...matter of fact maybe some cats should go an buy the mag--just a thought.
As to the Clipse, they tyte, no arguing on that, but as of right now without The Neptunes (or say really banging fresh beats) they just another rap duo
i just checked the mixtape they recently put out and it's nutn like the albums Lord's Willing or The Hell Hath No Fury, it's evarage or even outdated on the production side, so i don't think another album without The Neptunes, just to keep they name out thea, will do them good or take a step further in the game
the CLIPSE'S first album was garbage to me...but for a year now what i have heard really got me wondering who was behind that album...
the shit i heard from them recently...they absolutely killed the beat...they are underrated....they need a team thats willing to put out their best shit and the bullshit the airwaves are polluted with....
The Clipse are the second tightest rap duo out right now (only behind Outkast).
Wow. All you dudes saying the DC area is the next to blow are probably still sitting in the corner crossing your fingers hoping go-go music will blow too, right? LOL DC nigs don't even support their own artists, how do you expect the rest of the country to do so? Also, to those who think otherwise, here's a clue -- Quan is wack. Neptunes run shit. To the uninformed who suggested that the Clipse put out an andy album or mixtape and stop sitting around and waiting for Pharrell, where have you been? Clipse release two mixtapes and won mixtape of the year last year for their incarnation as The Re-Up Gang. And it's not up to Pharrell when the Clipse come back out. It's up to Jive Records. Pharrell even told Jive he wouldn't work with Justin Timberlake (Jive's big artist) anymore because of the way Jive has mistreated the Clipse. I mean has anyone even heard Mr. Me Too? That shit rocks and it's a new Clipse song featuring Pharrell and produced by the Neptunes. Cha niggas is out of it! Get familiar!
The Clipse do have that fire! But the label have that muscle. Period.
Does anyone else here think the game will get exciting again when the clipse drop? The game will be put in a serious chockhold when they drop. They lyrics is crazy.
mize2 How the fuck you say Jeezy wack. His first album is a classic. Real nigga shit all thru that bitch. Anyway DA Clipse is what's poppin, their last album was tight and I can't believe they held dem boyz back, that's fucked up.
MUCK CITY, Yo Boy Kenny
Fam, did you just refer to the stars on the cover as being "sprinkled"?
Wow. Please terminate your life immediately.
Fuck the Clipse!! G-Unit making money all day erryday, bitches!!!
We suck big dicks in the G-Unit camp!!!
F-50 for president!! Fuck Eric B.!!
Mr. Kenneth Ackerman, I'm afraid you're making horrible generalizations. Sure, I'm black and I hate ignorant black people as much as the next man. But let's come to terms for a second. We live in America where people pride themselves on being ignorant and avoiding the true cause of issues. I currently attend school at the University of Pittsburgh right now in pursuit of a degree in Digital Media Communications. The comments you see on this site are just a microcosm of a what a certain population thinks, but it's not indicative as a whole. I can see you're clearly educated enough to make the difference, so it wouldn't be a good thing to fall victim to the same ignorance plaguing this board.
Nigga done got me heated now..
Where the FUCK is Mike at.
Niggas wanna talk shit with no links..
Mike is a faggot.
And on that note, yes, I am a fan of the Clipse. The music that they make is clearly entertainment, and shouldn't be analyzed as more than that. Unfortunately, there are too many people out there that take this music out of context, unable to disemminate the difference between fact and fiction. Yes, music never killed anyone, but you can't blame a whole group of people (or a genre of music for that matter) for the pitfals of this country.
YEAH I FUCKS WIT THEM CLIPSE NIGGAZ. IM STILLIN BANGIN MY "LORD WILLING" ALBUM(MY SECOND COPY).SOMEBODY AT JIVE NEEDS TO TAKE THEIR FINGER OUT OF THE ASS, AND GET A SECOND ALBUM OUT.
Do you believe that all of them hip hop artists are dealers/gangsters? There are only few real criminals on scene...but why all the rappers keep saying about "keepin' it real"? Everybody (except kids) know, that it's just a music...why don't just keep it straight? Oooh, I forgot - if it wasn't "gangsta", suburban kids won't buy it...
So, is it all plain fiction or not?
the clipse is as real as it gets homey. most slept on artist of the millenium no doubt about it. but everybody when asked if the clipse is tight responds yes. can't wait for hell hath no fury to drop, ive been waiting for almost four years though. pharrell needs to quit jerkin them around and giving them free bathing ape clothing instead of putting their god damn album out. that story with jive is a bunch of bullshit, they could've had an album out by now, if they really wanted.
Yo Boy Kenny.......You must be Teen to think Jeezy ablum was a CLASSIC !! hahahah...That nigga is fucking WACK !!!! His flow his lyrics are all TRASH !!!
Niggas throwing around the Word Classic like it's nothing...
Ironman = classic
illmatic = classic
^^^ those are classics....JEEZY cant make Classics !
EZ !
Three questions for (dope dealers only please)
#1.Okay "Black People" tell me why it's okay to rap and brag about drug dealing?
Even if you did/do it to survive.
#2a.And why do you think the industry (media/labels etc.) are perfectly fine with this?
#2b. And how does the fact that they reward you for it "really" make feel?
#3. And when being a gay rapper starts to be the way to get the most money in the industry will these answers still apply?
I'm not judging I seriously want to hear ya'll answers. Thank You.
yo I fuck with crack and rap too. I kill ya niggaz if I has to. Where my burbs at, let's get it crackin niggaz.
Damn I love sellin crack
The vision which Isaiah, son of Amoz, had concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
2
Hear, O heavens, and listen, O earth, for the LORD speaks: Sons have I raised and reared, but they have disowned me!
3
2 An ox knows its owner, and an ass, its master's manger; But Israel does not know, my people has not understood.
4
3 Ah! sinful nation, people laden with wickedness, evil race, corrupt children! They have forsaken the LORD, spurned the Holy One of Israel, apostatized.
5
4 Where would you yet be struck, you that rebel again and again? The whole head is sick, the whole heart faint.
6
From the sole of the foot to the head there is no sound spot: Wound and welt and gaping gash, not drained, or bandaged, or eased with salve.
7
Your country is waste, your cities burnt with fire; Your land before your eyes strangers devour (a waste, like Sodom overthrown)--
8
5 And daughter Zion is left like a hut in a vineyard, Like a shed in a melon patch, like a city blockaded.
9
6 Unless the LORD of hosts had left us a scanty remnant, We had become as Sodom, we should be like Gomorrah.
10
Hear the word of the LORD, princes of Sodom! Listen to the instruction of our God, people of Gomorrah!
11
7 What care I for the number of your sacrifices? says the LORD. I have had enough of whole-burnt rams and fat of fatlings; In the blood of calves, lambs and goats I find no pleasure.
12
When you come in to visit me, who asks these things of you?
13
8 Trample my courts no more! Bring no more worthless offerings; your incense is loathsome to me. New moon and sabbath, calling of assemblies, octaves with wickedness: these I cannot bear.
14
Your new moons and festivals I detest; they weigh me down, I tire of the load.
15
9 When you spread out your hands, I close my eyes to you; Though you pray the more, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood!
16
Wash yourselves clean! Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes; cease doing evil;
17
learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan's plea, defend the widow.
18
Come now, let us set things right, says the LORD: Though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow; Though they be crimson red, they may become white as wool.
19
If you are willing, and obey, you shall eat the good things of the land;
20
But if you refuse and resist, the sword shall consume you: for the mouth of the LORD has spoken!
21
10 How has she turned adulteress, the faithful city, so upright! Justice used to lodge within her, but now, murderers.
22
Your silver is turned to dross, your wine is mixed with water.
23
Your princes are rebels and comrades of thieves; Each one of them loves a bribe and looks for gifts. The fatherless they defend not, and the widow's plea does not reach them.
24
Now, therefore, says the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: Ah! I will take vengeance on my foes and fully repay my enemies!
25
I will turn my hand against you, and refine your dross in the furnace, removing all your alloy.
26
I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as in the beginning; After that you shall be called city of justice, faithful city.
27
11 Zion shall be redeemed by judgment, and her repentant ones by justice.
28
Rebels and sinners alike shall be crushed, those who desert the LORD shall be consumed.
29
12 You shall be ashamed of the terebinths which you prized, and blush for the groves which you chose.
30
You shall become like a tree with falling leaves, like a garden that has no water.
31
The strong man shall turn to tow, and his work shall become a spark; Both shall burn together, and there shall be none to quench the flames.

Footnotes
1 [1] The title of the book: an editorial addition. Isaiah: meaning "the salvation of the LORD," or "The LORD is salvation." Amoz: not the minor prophet. Judah: the southern kingdom of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. Uzziah: also called Azariah; cf 2 Kings 15:1; 2 Chron 26:1.
2 [3] Israel: not the northern kingdom, as in Isaiah 9:11 exclusively, which Isaiah usually calls "Ephraim" from the tribe bordering on the southern kingdom, but the entire chosen people, cf Isaiah 8:14.
3 [4] Holy One of Israel: a title used frequently by Isaiah, rarely by other writers.
4 [5-8] Sufferings inflicted upon God's people for their sins.
5 [8] Daughter Zion: Jerusalem. Hut . . . shed: for the shelter of watchmen and laborers.
6 [9] LORD of hosts: God, who is the Creator and Ruler of the heavenly armies of the angels, stars, etc. Remnant: St. Paul uses this text in Romans 9:29 where he speaks of God's saving mercy toward the Jews and Gentiles. Sodom . . . Gomorrah: cf Genesis 19.
7 [11] The number of your sacrifices: however numerous, they are not acceptable without the right dispositions on the part of the worshipers.
8 [13] Octaves with wickedness: the solemnity of the feasts marred by evil deeds.
9 [15] Spread out your hands: in prayer.
10 [21] A picture of Jerusalem, once so faithful to God. Apostasy from the covenant is often likened by the prophets to unfaithfulness to the marriage vow.
11 [27] This verse is the key to the whole Book of Isaiah. Zion's defiant persistence in sin has demanded a divine judgment, by which her survivors will be cleansed and will return to God in justice; cf Isaiah 40:2.
12 [29] Terebinths which you prized . . . groves which you chose: as popular shrines for idolatrous worship.
^^ hey get a life loser you dint end shit. but im a better person den u so im not gonna respond to your gay ass
I like the clipse, they be droppin some gangsta shit, but i dont like the commercial shit but it sell so fuck it....and on that rappers talking bout drugs and guns that is what got us what we needed and wanted cuz you do more than survive hustlin and workin them streets......i personally rap i dont glorify negative shit i just inform you of it and tell you the pro and cons, its your decision 2 go out and do the shit i did or seen....GO AND CHECK MY SHIT OUT ON MYSPACE (CLICK MY NAME)
These niggaz is straight garbadge.....WTF was Pharelle thinking...the only thing that saves these corny niggaz is the beats......they flow SUCKS and they punchlines SUCK.......
G-UNIT RUNS THE WORLD, 50 IS THE TRUTH BITCH, HE IS A GOD AMONGST MEN, HE CAN FLY, HE CAN CREATE LIFE, AND HE ENDED YOUNG DOLLAZ, THE WHITE SATAN'S CAREER.
The Clipse are in my top 5 as rappers and a group. Of course they talk about crack and guns but unfortunately it sounds authentic and I love it. They're witty, clever and ahead of most other rappers with their word play on style and drugs. Go cop Re-Up gang volume 1 and 2 and you'll see what I mean. They rap for real hustlers. If they do a single with Jezzy then they're right back at the top of street-hop without comprimising anything they stand for. Like Malice said on Pharrel's mixtape "I dont glorify drug, just the character it builds" Spoken like true dope-dealer.
I've read a lot of praise on this blog about the Clipse. A lot of people seem to like them.
My question is this: Would you all still like the Clipse if they signed to G-Unit?? Or would you flip flop fickle ass hip hop fans hate the fuck out of them cats because of 50?
would anyone lash out on "The Godfather" (the movie, a certified classic) or any other mafia movie for "glorifying" mafioso lifestyle?
it's only ART, a story, a picture
hip hop is also an artform
815, the answer to your question is YES people would buy their album regardless of 50's possible involvement IF they were to sign with him. Yeah there are some folk who hate G Unit just to hate but I'm not a fan of theirs because lyrically they ain't up to par. they have great tastes in beats but they can't do nothing with those beats because they aren't good lyricists. They're all average. Anyway, I seriously doubt The Clipse would make such a move but that just my opinion. You could make the same arguement for M.O.P. & Mobb Deep but they're on the label now. I'm gonna cop that MOP IF it ever comes out but Mobb Deep (or more specifically Prodigy) fell off with Infamy. Back to the Clipse, yeah Jive has dropped the ball and chances are we'll never have an OFFICIAL album from them on a major label again.
Mize 2,
I'm with U, that Jeezy bullshit was nowhere near a classic, in fact, labeling that album as such is an insult 2 Nas, B.I.G., The Wu, and countless others who actually made classic Hip Hop albums, this knucklehead dropped an album full of snow & ad-libs, and these dummies ate that shit up, as 4 the t-shirts, I can't help but shake my head when I cee people giving that lifestyle a safe haven, and no Kenneth Ackerman, Black people are'nt lame, Niggas are lame, because they are manufactured.
I am That Dude & I approve this message.
I agree wit the dude "thun" that posted earlier about "niggas waiting for DC to blow"....
dude is right. How the hell is the country suppose to support an artist if the the artists' own city don't support him enough. The main reason why the Mid-east has as of yet not "blew up" in the rap game is because motha fuckas don't support each other. We've had our little glimmers of hope of some The thing about NY, ATL, Cali...the whole state support their people as a whole on the music tip. The Mid-EASt area is so fukkin divided and everyone fukkin hates on each other. I will say that cats from bmore do support their own...but niggas from DC don't fukk wit bmore niggas and vice versa. So no one ever blows like that in MD. Its like in DC, if its not go-go music, niggas as a whole don't support it no matter how hot it is. And sorry to say DC residents but GO-GO will never go global!!!!! I mean Ludacris even had RE wit him on stage at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards and the nigga didn't even so much as introduce or give them a look. To the rest of the country, they were just some regular band he must have hired to play the instrumental of "Pimpin' All Over the World" LIVE. DC don't support VA... Va don't support DC...Bmore don't support DC....etc. DC don't motha fukkin listen to no Clispe, or Missy, or Neptunes! They wanna hear UCB and the Listen Band (go-go bands). Niggas too fukkin divided. We need to motha fukking unite if we ever goina get this area recognized for something other than "the city that had Jordan and din't even make the playoffs!".
Damn Ace O, you could not say it any better homie!!!
For kenneth ackerman. For a person to claim that he/she is not racist but just that a specific race is lame, is ignorant and you must lead a very protected life to view life in the way you do. How can you say to be successful stay away from black people, it is the people like you in this country that make growing up young and black so hard. Johnny Cochran was a black man, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a black man, condelezza rice is a black woman, Colin Powell is a black man ( THESE ARE ALL PEOPLE WHO ARE SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT SPORTS , MUSIC, OR ANY FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT). I truly hope you are kidding with that post and it breaks my heart to hear such things in the year 2006. I am almost positive you live in a greatly white area because if I know for a fact you would not dare say those things to a black man in his face. The Black Community is only stronger from the hardships we go through. And whether you like it or not, the white people fear us and constantly try to hold us down. (p.s.= if you believe black people are lame, why are you on school of hip hop . com, this is a black culture website)
To Bayan:
The difference between a GodFather movie and what a rapper raps about is this. Though they both are a art form, rappers pride themselves on how real they are. And stupid ass fans hold cats accountable for that as well. Example: Young Jeezy is not lyrical at all. However the realness that you feel from him is what the fans are flocking to.
But when actors finish there role that's if for that character unless there is a sequel. They ain't doin on interviews claiming how real the character was to they real life, like rappers do. So that's why rap gets knocked like that.
Attention *IF YOU EVER WANT TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL IN LIFE STAY AWAY FROM BLACK PEOPLE*
Mr. Kenneth Ackerman: You must be an Uncle Tom or something. How dare you say some ignorant s--- like that. It seems to me you are one of those successful blacks who don't want to associate themselves with the rest of the poorer black masses. How can you actually say something such as this?
http://www.i3log.com/uploads/imbored_nazi.jpg
Other than outkast, this may the illest group left in the mainstream rap world.
Thrillz,
You hit it on the head. I hope you understand Bayan.
Furthermore, we have to stop making excuses for our actions based on what others are doing. Without a doubt hip-hop gets far more negative attention but that does not mean the criticism is wrong.
Unfairly being singled out:
Fight the injustice.
Criticism of our actions:
Man up. It's about right and wrong.
I like the Clipse talent but I can't stomach the BS. So I encourage them and others like them to understand what your are doing, saying, and to who and for who.
And understand, everybody ain't sleep. You will be called into question for what you presenting to the people.

As someone who has "seen" the streets, let me testify...Robbing,drug dealing, dangerous unprotected sex, drug/alcohol abuse, violence, rape, degradation, police harrasment/brutality,and other societal ills, do not make you a man...If losing respect for ones self is the goal, we have a whole generation about to cross the finish line...I can't take back where I've been, but when I'm blessed with a family, if it means I have to give up my life to keep my kids away from that shit, I will!!!!...It's easy to say that shit is cool, if you look @ it from the outside, but really go hard in that life, you'll see...As far as the whole imaging of hip-hop, you can't talk intricately about drug activity, then when the police run up, try and tell'em it's an act...If you're acting to the boys, you're acting for the streets!!...Anybody really in the streets know 2 things for sure: Talking shit about how much you got, gets you a kickdoe the next night...2. Fake killa talk will get you bodied by real killas...Street niggas are fucking it up for real emcees who love and respect the artform...Those young niggas need that avenue so they don't have to turn to the streets...Plus, if a nigga's getting 100,000 stacks on the street, it's really unlikely he would give that up for something he might not be as successful @...Crack rappers are fakers & exaggeraters, but it's our kid's trying to live a life another man made-up!!...Fuck outta here!
Keep god first, and raise them babies the right way!!!!
Mass Appeal.
I'm sure somebody over there checking this blog. Anybody brave enough to explain why you all think this cover is okay. Let me guess "freedom of... blah blah blah, they got the right to... blah blah blah, we only report the ... blah blah blah.

Holla if I'm wrong.
