A Walk Through The Online Hip-Hop Graveyard

I got love for the independent online mags like SOHH and other all hip-hop sites that cover rap music on the web. However, there is a long list of corporate backed hip-hop magazines that tried to harris their way online, with dreams that their brand and money could buy them an audience. Their motivation was the bottom line of a spreadsheet, not love for the culture, and hip-hop fans have always been good at sniffing that out.

Where are all these sites now? Most have died, and now only exist in what I like to call the Online Hip-Hop Graveyard. Let's take a stroll past some of the tombstones.

R.I.P. 360hiphop.com. Russell Simmons launched this clunky portal with millions of dollars, backing from celebrities like Will Smith and Tyra Banks, and a who's who selection of quality hip-hop writers. The overblown design was known to crash more often than DMX. Bob Johnson eventually won the site from Russell during a weekly spades game.

R.I.P. MSBET. Microsoft and BET teamed up to present a catch-all place for all Black people online, because we all think alike. Microsoft provided the technology, and BET brought the proven ability to trick Blacks into accepting low standards.

R.I.P. Vibe.Yahoo.com. This was a doomed deal between Vibe Magazine and Yahoo.com that mirrored MSBET. The site quietly faded after the execs at both houses realized that two bland brands don't make a hot site.

R.I.P. Rapstation. Half a decade after the height of Public Enemy's popularity Chuck D reinvented himself as a web visionary. Unfortunately, part of his vision was to support P2P programs like Napster. It was probably hard for a site that encouraged illegal music downloads to get an exclusive interview from any hip-hop artist.

R.I.P. TheSource.com version 1-4. Mayzino and crew never got straight whether they wanted to have the site live on it's own or just exist as an ad for the offline magazine. After trying out every flavor of flash since the late 90's the website exists as a one pager, straight out of the Dreamweaver box.

R.I.P. Urban Box Office. They started out as a network of sites for the "urban" audience, whatever that means. After the founder passed away, so did the the site's focus and ad dollars. They're still in business though, pushing Reggaeton mixtapes or something.

So, to all my net fam, let's pour out a little bandwidth for these fallen hip-hop websites and wait to see what other corporate backed sites will be next in the graveyard.

You can add Mr Irreverent to that list. He is finally gone! Time to pop the bottles!

Posted by: Rude Nigga at March 8, 2006 3:31 PM

There's not much reason to visit any sites besides SOHH or AHH. Every now and then I'll peep Baller Status and for the stricly west coast scene I'll peep Westcoast2k.net but that's about it. I love the blogs on this site and on AHH you gotta love Illseed. MSBET? Are you serious?

Hookt.com

Platform.net

88hiphop.com

BlazeMagazine.com

Triple-Bypass.com

aka.com

All went down in flames.... they don't know how get an audience and keep it. Plus, magazine features on websites don't work... that's the #1 thing these wannabes need to know... that's why 360hiphop failed... plus they were throwing cash around like crazy... didn't know what to invest in

"Plus, magazine features on websites don't work... that's the #1 thing these wannabes need to know"

Q, it would be cool if you could write more on this or your blog or elsewhere. I agree with you, and I don't all at the same time.

Also, I don't think the comments above are really from Elliott Wilson, but I'll leave them there just in case.

The bottom line is Hip Hop has been adopted by Big business so what do you expect? If you want some real live Hip Hop CNN in your life we need for the real to come forward and represent. Any armchair quarter back can call the Superbowl but I would like to hear the guys playing in the league. We really need a definition of "real" Hip Hop as opposed to commercial. Face it all the platinum artists out are commercial. Is that a bad thing? They're trying to get paid aren't they? There's a fine line between the real and the fake.

Posted by: Sulogical at March 13, 2006 1:38 PM

Vibe Magazine PERIOD should go. The real world mag the website. If there's ever a mag that's fallen off and by the wayside, it's Vibe. Shit is painful to read.

Posted by: rakimfan at March 13, 2006 8:51 PM

Yo, u hit that shit right on the head.
But Elliot or whoever is right, funny you come with this right after they launch their site, which is trash .. i don't see myself visiting that a lot. Rather just buy the mag .. y try to flod the market.. that's just a bad move. should of did something different, but xxl come the the web with the same thing their magazine is about and recycling articles is nah coo.

MY TOP 5 Hip-hop sites:

1. Allhiphop.com - most dominate hiphop site out-to-date

2. Sohh - The blogs are crazy, but the content is lacking

3. Mixtapetalk.com - a new site i think, but if you tired of the same shit and into the mixtape scene its a good site.

4. Ozonemag - I visit to read the magazine, which is always puttin me on that down-south shit

5. dubcnn - got to stay connected to the west coast

face of the matter .. it's to many damn magazines and its to many damn websites!
