Advice to Reebok - Study Your Hip-Hop

My dude who runs the Strictly Business blog recently did an insightful campaign analysis on Reebok. Since the sneaker company signed up 50 Cent and Jay-Z, they've posted a double digit revenue increase. Reebok, or "RBK" as they now want you to call them is a perfect case study on how hip-hop can transform a brand.

But they gotta watch out. Strictly Business points out RBK is now signing up emcees who won't make credible pitchmen. For instance, new signess Lil Wayne is known for rocking BAPE, and Lupe Fiasco is better suited for a skateboard shoe that matches his "Kick, Push" anthem.

My theory is that the turn towards hip-hop happened through some smart Black exec at RBK who convinced the company to take a risk on Jay and 50 in order to beat Nike through the back door. When the planned popped, the older White VP's took control and decided to indiscriminately sign any rapper with a hit single, regardless of their compatibility with the brand.

My advice - don't dilute the buzz by scooping up anybody as a spokesman. Instead, I think they can still max out their S. Carter and G6 lines with a re-up in different colors and another round of commercials. What do ya'll think?

And here's that dope RBK commercial froma few years back featuring Jay and 50 over a Just Blaze beat:

Fabolous would ask him a question and at the end of every response, he would plug the shoes coming out soon. This nigga for real think he's hot--in a couple of years, he's gonna make a CD that will flop, then it will hit him that no one likes him--right now he REALLY thinks he's the shit. I'm a beat his pudgy ass if I ever see him, he's a stain on the crotch of hip-hop, I wanna see him die like sperm on a skillet. Fuck that nigga...

People still wear Reebok?

Posted by: Triple_p04 at March 16, 2006 8:41 AM

I like reebok sneakers to work out in or jog...other than that, I really don't wear them.

Personally, I don't like Jay's sneakers but I am not mad at them for making money from endorsements.

If jessica simpson can sell more pizza for the hut and James Earl Jones inspire folks to use a certain phone carrier...who r we 2 hate.

Jay and 50 ain't ever gonna make it to the WHEATIES cereal box or a commercial for a trip 2 walt disney world so why not sneakers.

By the way, Queen Latifah (Jersey homegirl - another Dana 2 the rescue)
is the 1 who is really milking the game on endorsements...Pizza Hut..Cover girl...walmart??or Target??? (remember during Christmas time 4 the gift cards) and some line of clothes 4 BIG-BONED gals...

on but off the topic:
have u heard anthony hamilton's song:
"Sista Big Bone" that shit is hilarious!

Posted by: Dana in Jersey at March 16, 2006 9:23 AM

Yeah Reebok had been trying to lure the Hip Hop audience for some time now. It's good for everyone to get their money, but if you're going to market artists, get ones suitable for the product. Lil Wayne sneakers? And yeah Lupe needs to be doing sneakers with Vans or something not Reebok.

Side note:
See how hip hop would be if these big egos were put aside. I was feeling that track with 50 and Jay. Real big move right there fr both. But to Setaholic, 50 aint even kill Jay man. C'mon! You just a fan. Jay finessed the track and 50 brought the gutter approach. Both hot, but...

"Give me three hot seconds/ I'll break Reebok records" Jay-Z

50 is a hypocrite as well as a snitch. let me explain...
he wanted to end ja rules career based off of personal reasons. so he talked about how he was an r&b rapper and he was a lier. now fifty is the exact same as ja rule because he is always danm singing in his songs and has the catchy little hooks and junk. (check his new song) then he snitches (snitching is when you get yourself out of trouble by telling on others) to the police about supreme and irv gotti. how lame is this nigga. stop rocking there is way more but i just wanted the through that out there that 50 is a bitch and a snitch and yall need to leave him alone.

I agree that a black dude probably came up with the idea to get rappers but white dudes as they always do decided to milk it til it's dry. The result is niggas like Mike Jones with shoe deals. Nelly even has a shoe deal with RBK...didnt he make a song called Air Force Ones? Niggas will do anything for money.

But who would've thought of Jay-Z (with his hip hop couture)or 50 cent (and them gay ass wifebeaters) as compatible with the Reebok brand. The spokesmen are supposed to help the brand change and evolve. If they only signed ppl who "fit in" well with what they were doing they'd be doing the same numbers they've been doing.

And yeah the S. Carters and the G-Units are on rapid decline. A bunch of new colors is probably the worst thing they could do. Stickk to blogging. Leave marketing to the experts.

Did anyone hear what 50 snitch had to say about the south @ mtv.com

50 says he feels hip-hop needs the new G-Unit releases, as the genre seems to be stuck in a creative rut.

"A lot of the music that comes out of the South is kind of simplified and I think it's kinda 'cause they just wanna have a good time," he explained. "They don't wanna think about what [they] just said. ... They really didn't make sense, but they made sense in a way and they just wanna hear something while they're actually partying and it works for them. But when they don't take the time to make it the highest quality possible, it hurts the actual hip-hop [genre]. People wanna make music they can get away with as opposed to the best possible music they can make.

"They'll lower the grade of music," he continued. "It changes the range you can go and then it causes confusion amongst artists that don't have their own direction at that point and they all start making music that is similar.

It is so true. Why would reebok want to give Nelly a shoe when this nigga made a sneaker anthem (air force 1) for a competing company? Somebody needs to get fired. That is how out of touch these people are with hip-hop because then they would realize that when people think of nelly and sneakers they are never gonna think if Reebok they are gonna think of that whack song about forces.

50 is accurate on this one, southern niggas who run there mouth just dont think anyone has the right to say anything about 'their' precious music and make it into a regional thing without hesitation. The quality is gone from EVERY region, and sorry stragglers the dirty south is in the lead in that department, so sorry you dont like it but thats what happens when you support anything and everything from your city just because, it just doesnt add up sometimes ya know? Everything aint good just cause a whole region backs a song while the rest of the universe hates it, it happens ask puffy!
New York is like 1A because EVERYBODY SOUNDS EXACTLY THE SAME and thats just as bad and Im from Far-Rockaway QU beach 13th and Mott ave reppin all day so dont get it twisted...'hater' and all the other chat room favorties need not apply.
50 is in the metrics buisness where 1 of his task is to monitor the consumers habits, and the majority consumer right now is in the club with strippers on their mind. Where 50 cent can make a shorty track 'best friend' with alot more effort and work into the MUSIC itself with the idea for making shortys dance or whatever, a track like 'Laffy Taffy' is all push n play keyboard music with the same agenda but no effort or care and its a ploy for the chickenheads of america who wanna shake their ass at the club with no care for quality or anything else for that matter just dancing. cool. I can dig that, and its a smart move but D4L is so 'out of it' they cant even see how their setting their own selves up for failure, the consumer/american public/ hip hop community can be very critical once we catch on....

Posted by: 5Gates at March 16, 2006 5:09 PM

1 more thing, southern artist are supporting themselves and are succesful for the most part and the rest of the world is still catching on, true? Well only a good handful of southern artist artist are actually platinum by industry standards, the majority are local but with more exposure cause of the area being a new 'hotspot' for talent. niggas is only selling 10, 20,000 units 50 for some....that aint even gold just so you know, by industry standards that is, for indie numbers thats stright but fro being a signed artist, thats worst than bleek, fat joe or any other NY artist you can crack a joke about in all reality, alot of cats are in the same boat like it or not! Niggas is just making enough to put out more albums basically, so I ask the southern fans who are on every ATL blog or talking that new york shit defending or fighting or standing up to us or whatever you call it, LET YOUR NIGGAS LIVE 1st BEFORE YOUR MOUTH KILLS YOUR MOVEMENT! If you fight off the entire hip hop community for their southern critque who do you have to back you besides the few thousand people in your town? Think about that cause you havent won anything yet like most of you act. Think really hard and dont just run your mouth....and no hater talk please that shit is so fag like.

I need the first niggers that come to mind..doesn't matter who..these darkies will relate to whoever we put in a monkeysuit...hahahahaha" and it its sad....and then ya'll nigga on here talkin bout shit thats not even important,lol...nigga on here talkin about" I ONLY WEAR CLASSICS. You may see me in some Puma's or some K-Swiss." That has nothin to do w/ the price of herb in Kingston.....The ponit is its another example of how our music and artist are being used a tool for making corporate america a shit load of money that will never go back into anyone of our hoods....Jordan is some shit too...you have all these kids in the hood robbin, grindin and spending their last on some fuc 200 dallar shoes but their parents are barely payin rent or utilities....I don't care if Jordan owns the company anymore or mot..he still wasn't puttin back in to the hood when he did....I don't see this as some groundbreaking shit b/c some new clowns got an endorsement deal to rock some ugly ass shoes....Its just some more efforts to smack us in the face and take our more loot out of the hood...wake up niggas....It would have been a little less offensive had they been some artist w/ REAL history and substance in the game on the new marketing campaign, but look...just look..its a joke....like "Take what we give you niggers...just like on BET and just about any radio station across the U.S."

Fuck any g-unit soldier, and Fuck rebook. Them g-unit shoes are fucking discusting! Get real kicks like Air Jordans.

Posted by: g-unit cap killa at March 22, 2006 11:23 AM

I'm a Rbk fan, as far as S.'s go. The person who said they haven't seen anyone rock em is b/c they're from NY. That city is MJ town. I'll even rock Jordan's, despite some gripes I have w/ a few pairs I own. But you can't go wrong w/ the S.'s. I own a few myself and wear them every once in awhile.

Posted by: Rottnbanana at March 22, 2006 1:33 PM

Why does 50s "wifebeater" look like a gay ass spaghetti strap. what a fag. that shit is gay. I aint got nothin against gays, but they don't act like thier tough. i got the s. carter. suede, black and grey. I wasn't feeling them at first, but they real grown looking. I can't always wear white forces. And those shoes aren't really waynes, mikes, and lupes. They are the O.Gs. they just endorse them. Nelly already had a nike shoe. and them O.Gs are clean. I got them too. but i aint an o.g. i just like the shoe, not the rappers endorsing it.

Posted by: big_seth at March 22, 2006 9:26 PM

SOHH HASHIM

Good point brotha some very interesting speculations there...but your theory is a little off it wasn't some smart black exec who came up with the shoe idea.

Steve Stoute actually pitched RBX and convinced 50, who probably didn't need much convincing.

...just making sure that man gets his credit...

I have my own theories on Reebok's venture into the non-sport urban market and I think it has a lot to do with the fact that they couldn't grab the 13-25 year old demographic away from And1 on the court.

As for their decision to sign rappers like they sponsor NBA players, I can't say I agree with the concept, however keep this in mind - even Lil Wayne has a following and all it's going to take is one line in one dope song as an homage to RBK and he could move not just cd's but sneakers as well.

I've been a fan of Hip Hop since before Busta and the Scenario guest spot days and I've seen the commercialization of rap come full circle. Hip Hop/Urban culture dictates what's cool today. I think we'll continue to see the true trend setters originate from rap, but I don't think the exploitation of rap artists across multiple mediums (Video Games, Shoes, Clothes, Cd's, DVD's, etc.) is going to help anyone's cause long term.

Posted by: I Bleed Detroit at March 24, 2006 1:19 AM

alot of you are saying"i only wear forces ann jordans" but that is because that is the popular trend right now. if the trend was to wear reeboks you would be doing it. quality wise i think s.carters are wayy beter than Air Force !'s because they begin to crease the moment you put them on and jordans start to squek after several wearings. i still buy jordans but its more because its the thing to have and jordan is a black man, im black i like to support blacks. reebok is the shoe brand offering deals to rappers so why complain, yeah nelly made shoe anthem, air force ones but i dont see nike offering him even his own colorway of them

I agree wit the comments about Nelly doin a deal a Reebok when he had that song, but them sneakers is tight. Straight up. I think they called the Derrty Ones, yall should peep those, tell us what you think.

So let me get this straight. If they signed a rapper you like (50, Jay-Z) then it must have been a black exec's idea but signing someone you dont think is a good spokesperson (Lil Wayne) must have been a white exec's idea. Do you have any idea how stupid and stereotypical that sounds? So if a company makes a bad decision involving hip-hop that decision must have been made by a white guy? What white guy told Dame Dash to buy Pro Keds?

I don't think he meant it like an average white guy. I think he meant some 50 something year old white dude that doesn't know anything about hip hop. He just flipped open the latest Billboard Magazine looked at the charts and called whoever had a top ten song.

The Nike, Reebok, and Adidas' of the world who sell billions of dollars of merchandise to the hip-hop community didn't create the term that defines the basketball and hip-hop culture fusion that's being now being called The "Dunkadelic Era" In America, 1984-Present. Dunkadelic (adjective) the fusion of basketball and hip-hop inspired by the cultural aesthetics of urban style, fashion, and attitude. Since 1984 this culture phenomenon has been part of American society. The term was created by some guy in Baltimore so I'm not all that impressed with Nike, Reebok, or Adidas.

first off,all of you are lame and have no sense of style, you all wear the same garbage year after year, and now you got niggas talkin about what corny shoes or sneakers you wear, thats the problem with you ghetto kids, you can't think out of the box when it comes to gear, you're to afraid to be different so you homos have to all look the same, the shit is funny to me,and all you homos who bashed people who rock sneakers like gucci, which by the way is ten times better than some average jordans that played out in the early 90s and some garbage ass air force ones that played out in the 90s,i wore those as a teen, gtfo of here with that,i'm rocking shit that cost more than your mother's roach infested housing project apartments,so lets stop frontin, don't be mad cuz you can't afford fly shit and have to settle on your everyday footwear, gucci vans, hot gucci sneakers from the summer catalog hotter than any sneaker that came out, black white with the gucci script log on the back, yeah i'm all that
