I'm reading Michael Eric Dyson's new book "Come Hell or High Water: Hurricane Katrina And the Color of Disaster". Now that the press has forgotten about all of the race and class issues brought out by last year's man made disaster in New Orleans this is a good time to release a book that ties eveything together.
Dyson puts the event in historical, political, social, and even religious perspective (stop blaming God, people!). What have I learned so far? The poor people are always the last ones to leave a city in a disaster. Google "slaves" and "Pompeii" to see what I mean, or just watch Titanic and peep who gets trapped at the bottom of the ship.
The challenge for us today is to not forget these lessons, because we've been repeating the same mistakes for some time.
Looky here, I am tired of hearing about Hurricane Katrina. It happened it is over and everyone knows that Anmerica has and always give us colored folks minimal attention. And to the cat who wrote the book man quit trying to make money from this tragedy, there is nothing in this book that we haven't heard on the block or seen on the news. Give all of your proceeds to huricane Katrina victims. If you are not than you are no better than Bush. He ain't doin nothing, but that means nothing if the person saying it ain't doin nothing. Oh Lord, here we go again. Are you seriously taking the views of this book into consideration? Im not a fan of Dyson, mainly because he only writes from one perspective (a black perspective). A good writer includes all perspectives.

Being that I stayed in New Orleans the last five years and moved to Houston from Katrina. New Orleans reminds me of the city they talk about in the bible. If you think about it the N.O. had murder, rape, drugs, homosexuality, and anything else 24 hours a day. I think it was a message from God. That shit doesn't happen often but N.O. was like an hell on earth and people kept their mouth close and eyes shut.

A Carnegie man accused of killing his housemate and then dismembering him has been ordered to stand trial for homicide and abuse of a corpse.

Allegheny County police have said James M. Baldwin, 22, decapitated, dismembered and eviscerated Brendon Martin, 19, and packed his remains in four garbage bags before burying them on vacant land in Collier.
At a preliminary hearing yesterday, District Judge Anthony Saveikis held Mr. Baldwin for trial on charges of homicide and abuse of a corpse.
The only person to testify was county homicide Detective Henry Siemianowski, who interviewed Mr. Baldwin about the fatal struggle Jan. 25 with Mr. Martin at Mr. Baldwin's home on Boquet Street, Carnegie.
Police said a fight began between the two men in a basement utility room a day after Mr. Martin learned he was being thrown out by Mr. Baldwin.
Mr. Martin had been living for four to five months at the house Mr. Baldwin shared with his girlfriend, identified by police as Genny Paterson, and her 2-year-old daughter. But Mr. Baldwin had an unidentified attorney draft a "notice to vacate," Detective Siemianowski said.
Mr. Baldwin told police that he was attacked in a basement utility room by Mr. Martin, who wielded a claw hammer, and he struck back in self-defense with a knife that fell off a tool bench as the two struggled.
Detective Siemianowski testified that Mr. Baldwin said "he was angry and full of rage and pumped with adrenalin" during the fight. In the darkened utility room, lit only by the coils on an electric heater, Mr. Baldwin plunged the knife into Mr. Martin two or three times, the detective said.
The final blow was struck as Mr. Martin lay on the floor coughing up blood and asking "why," police said.
"He wanted it to end," Detective Siemianowski said of the suspect.
Mr. Baldwin then used a hacksaw, hedge clippers and tin snips to cut up Mr. Martin, police said. Investigators have recovered only a hacksaw.
In an affidavit, police said Mr. Baldwin confessed to the crimes.
Mr. Baldwin's attorney, David S. Shrager, argued that under the law, his client's enraged state of mind should lead to a voluntary manslaughter charge, at worst, instead of first- or third-degree murder.
Deputy District Attorney Mark V. Tranquilli pointed out that at this early stage of the judicial process, Mr. Baldwin is under a general charge of homicide with the specific level of gravity to be determined later.
Mr. Shrager said his client was half a foot shorter than the 6-foot-2 Mr. Martin, and was frightened and acting in self-defense. Mr. Shrager also said he was concerned with roughly a three-hour gap between the time detectives first took Mr. Baldwin into custody and then read him his rights.
Relatives of both suspect and victim sat through the testimony but declined comment after the hearing.

A wave of street killings is sweeping through Pittsburgh's black neighborhoods, leaving a trail of grieving families, overworked police and bewildered community leaders.
The onslaught pushed the murder rate in Pittsburgh last year to ninth-highest among cities in the biggest U.S. metropolitan areas, higher than in Miami and Los Angeles and triple New York's rate.
More than half of Pittsburgh's population is black, but 22 of the city's 25 homicide victims this year have been black. Ten men have been charged in 11 of the black killings. All are black, though charges in one case were dropped.

Drug-related violence may have pushed the number of homicides in the Pittsburgh area to a record level this year, but increases are happening in several other cities as well.

Cuyahoga County, Ohio, which includes Cleveland, had 114 killings as of Monday, a 7 percent increase over last year. Killings are up 6 percent in Baltimore and more than 10 percent in Philadelphia.
"The fact is, there's more guns and drugs on the street," said Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken. "And 90 percent of the murders involve drugs somehow."
Cincinnati, which has a population similar to Pittsburgh's, recorded a 25-year high for homicides this year. Allegheny County, the county that includes Pittsburgh, has matched its 1993 record of 218 killings in a year.
Law enforcement and community leaders blame the problem on the drug trade and retaliatory violence. Experts say changes in demographics, particularly in cities like Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, or drug sales can also affect the number of murders.
"A change in the drug market can drive the number up quickly in smaller cities like this," said Carnegie Mellon University professor Alfred Blumstein, an expert in crime statistics. "That can be a new product, new people entering the trade or older people getting out of jail and back in to the game."
Of the 218 slayings, 202 have taken place in the city of Pittsburgh. The record within Steel City is 207 in 1993. Cincinnati has had 73 so far this year and its record stands at 81 in 1971.
While the numbers in Philadelphia and Baltimore have gone up, they are still well below their annual records. Philadelphia has a record of 230 and Baltimore's high is at more than 350.
Pittsburgh police Chief Robert W. McNeilly Jr. says heroin traffic has gone up, which is being affected by changing demographics.
"There's been a big increase in the number of people in their late teens and early 20s here, and that could have something to do with it," McNeilly said.
Luken said crack cocaine is driving force in the killings in Cincinnati.
"It's the dealers shooting people they want to rip off, or people ripping off the dealers," Cincinnati police Lt. Kurt Byrd said.
But putting the killers behind bars has been difficult. Cincinnati's clearance rate has dropped below 50 percent as the murder rate has gone up. During a recent killing, Luken said a man was shot in the head as he sat at a bar. A dozen people sitting near him didn't see the murder.
"We're having trouble getting community support," Luken said.
Homicide detectives in Pittsburgh, however, reported fewer murders in the last days of the year. There have been three killings in the city this month, compared to 10 in October, 8 in September and 16 in August.
"It was very hard to keep up when we were having four a week instead of just one a week," McNeilly said.

A Carnegie man accused of killing his housemate and then dismembering him has been ordered to stand trial for homicide and abuse of a corpse.

Carnegie man, 22, charged with killing housemate (01/28/06)
Allegheny County police have said James M. Baldwin, 22, decapitated, dismembered and eviscerated Brendon Martin, 19, and packed his remains in four garbage bags before burying them on vacant land in Collier.
At a preliminary hearing yesterday, District Judge Anthony Saveikis held Mr. Baldwin for trial on charges of homicide and abuse of a corpse.
The only person to testify was county homicide Detective Henry Siemianowski, who interviewed Mr. Baldwin about the fatal struggle Jan. 25 with Mr. Martin at Mr. Baldwin's home on Boquet Street, Carnegie.
Police said a fight began between the two men in a basement utility room a day after Mr. Martin learned he was being thrown out by Mr. Baldwin.
Mr. Martin had been living for four to five months at the house Mr. Baldwin shared with his girlfriend, identified by police as Genny Paterson, and her 2-year-old daughter. But Mr. Baldwin had an unidentified attorney draft a "notice to vacate," Detective Siemianowski said.
Mr. Baldwin told police that he was attacked in a basement utility room by Mr. Martin, who wielded a claw hammer, and he struck back in self-defense with a knife that fell off a tool bench as the two struggled.
Detective Siemianowski testified that Mr. Baldwin said "he was angry and full of rage and pumped with adrenalin" during the fight. In the darkened utility room, lit only by the coils on an electric heater, Mr. Baldwin plunged the knife into Mr. Martin two or three times, the detective said.
The final blow was struck as Mr. Martin lay on the floor coughing up blood and asking "why," police said.
"He wanted it to end," Detective Siemianowski said of the suspect.
Mr. Baldwin then used a hacksaw, hedge clippers and tin snips to cut up Mr. Martin, police said. Investigators have recovered only a hacksaw.
In an affidavit, police said Mr. Baldwin confessed to the crimes.
Mr. Baldwin's attorney, David S. Shrager, argued that under the law, his client's enraged state of mind should lead to a voluntary manslaughter charge, at worst, instead of first- or third-degree murder.
Deputy District Attorney Mark V. Tranquilli pointed out that at this early stage of the judicial process, Mr. Baldwin is under a general charge of homicide with the specific level of gravity to be determined later.
Mr. Shrager said his client was half a foot shorter than the 6-foot-2 Mr. Martin, and was frightened and acting in self-defense. Mr. Shrager also said he was concerned with roughly a three-hour gap between the time detectives first took Mr. Baldwin into custody and then read him his rights.
Relatives of both suspect and victim sat through the testimony but declined comment after the hearing.

A wave of street killings is sweeping through Pittsburgh's black neighborhoods, leaving a trail of grieving families, overworked police and bewildered community leaders.
The onslaught pushed the murder rate in Pittsburgh last year to ninth-highest among cities in the biggest U.S. metropolitan areas, higher than in Miami and Los Angeles and triple New York's rate.
More than half of Pittsburgh's population is black, but 22 of the city's 25 homicide victims this year have been black. Ten men have been charged in 11 of the black killings. All are black, though charges in one case were dropped.

Drug-related violence may have pushed the number of homicides in the Pittsburgh area to a record level this year, but increases are happening in several other cities as well.

Cuyahoga County, Ohio, which includes Cleveland, had 114 killings as of Monday, a 7 percent increase over last year. Killings are up 6 percent in Baltimore and more than 10 percent in Philadelphia.
"The fact is, there's more guns and drugs on the street," said Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken. "And 90 percent of the murders involve drugs somehow."
Cincinnati, which has a population similar to Pittsburgh's, recorded a 25-year high for homicides this year. Allegheny County, the county that includes Pittsburgh, has matched its 1993 record of 218 killings in a year.
Law enforcement and community leaders blame the problem on the drug trade and retaliatory violence. Experts say changes in demographics, particularly in cities like Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, or drug sales can also affect the number of murders.
"A change in the drug market can drive the number up quickly in smaller cities like this," said Carnegie Mellon University professor Alfred Blumstein, an expert in crime statistics. "That can be a new product, new people entering the trade or older people getting out of jail and back in to the game."
Of the 218 slayings, 202 have taken place in the city of Pittsburgh. The record within Steel City is 207 in 1993. Cincinnati has had 73 so far this year and its record stands at 81 in 1971.
While the numbers in Philadelphia and Baltimore have gone up, they are still well below their annual records. Philadelphia has a record of 230 and Baltimore's high is at more than 350.
Pittsburgh police Chief Robert W. McNeilly Jr. says heroin traffic has gone up, which is being affected by changing demographics.
"There's been a big increase in the number of people in their late teens and early 20s here, and that could have something to do with it," McNeilly said.
Luken said crack cocaine is driving force in the killings in Cincinnati.
"It's the dealers shooting people they want to rip off, or people ripping off the dealers," Cincinnati police Lt. Kurt Byrd said.
But putting the killers behind bars has been difficult. Cincinnati's clearance rate has dropped below 50 percent as the murder rate has gone up. During a recent killing, Luken said a man was shot in the head as he sat at a bar. A dozen people sitting near him didn't see the murder.
"We're having trouble getting community support," Luken said.
Homicide detectives in Pittsburgh, however, reported fewer murders in the last days of the year. There have been three killings in the city this month, compared to 10 in October, 8 in September and 16 in August.
"It was very hard to keep up when we were having four a week instead of just one a week," McNeilly said.

Anyway Michael Eric Dyson is not trying to profit off of Hurican Katrina, Dyson is just trying to inform the public on what were some of the contributing factors that led to the chaos and destruction subsequently following the disaster. I don't know Dyson personaly but from what I've heard from my peers and College professors he is a pretty reputable journalist/historian/activist. Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster that transcended it's ecological boundaries on so many levels. The majority of people who lost their lives were those that were from economicaly deprived areas. It is clear that the Bush administration had not dealt with the matter quickly and readily enough so that the level of severity would have not overwhelmed the evacuees to the degree that it did.
I support Michael Eric Dyson and I think this book is a great read.
