SOHH reports, activist/writer Kevin Powell is campaigning for a congressional seat so he can rep his Brooklyn district and I guess, the hip-hop generation. You may remember Powell as the first celebrity hip-hop journalist or as the castmate who started the "crazy Black guy" tradition on MTV's The Real World.
I went to Powell's "The State of the Black Men in America" forum that was held a few years ago, and I was honestly inspired by what I heard there, and especially by the people I met. It was refreshing to discuss Black issues in a frame that was hopeful and encouraging. Powell himself is a charismatic speaker who isn't afraid to take a hard line stance against the what's wrong in our culture, even if it's hip-hop culture he's targeting.
No comment though on his water-weak book. And should I mention Powell's physical fight with a magazine editor over some mutual lady friend? Nah, that's not fair.
I don't know anything about Powell's competition except that he's been in Congress for 24 years, which is two decades past usefulness if he's anything like my local Black representatives. So, with all that said i hope dude wins. We could use another one of us up on Capitol Hill.

Congress is the opposite of Progress
see, Con-Pro
I hope he wins his election and ACTUALLY do something for the community.
Time for a lot of people to put there money where there mouth is.....WHERE DO I GO TO DONATE?
PEACE
I used to think the brother was a coon. but i think he might be actually on to something his agendas sound real. Hopefully he can keep his own mind and not be forced to conform. hmm
probably not. Shouts to colin powell for holding us down.
A million black men don't need to get together to ask for shit.If your a million strong u demand shit!!!
black business is the only way to freedom.
What's up with jimi izrael?
Ya boy sounds mad jealous of Kevin's celeb status.
MAD jealous.
I, have never head of Jimi Izrael and he seems to have a bunch of bylines to his credit. I don't live in LA or Ohio so that may be the reason.
Somebody shout out.
MTV2 is showing "My Block: The Bay", where Sway is from. Make sure you check it out.
Sway is also going to show us the Flea Market where he get his head gear from.
I know he's an East Coast kat but does anyone know if he's coming out West to do any lectures or anything of that nature?
They'll assasinate that negro before he wins a congressional seat!
fuck congress.........50 CENT FOR PRESIDENT!!!!! USA G-UNIT USA G-UNIT!!!! 50 would be the ultimate leader. he wouldnt take shit from other countries or nothin and hes black so you dont have to worry about him hatin blacks! he would be the ultimate world leader!!!!! ggggggunit!!!!!!!!!
GOOD, LUCK KEVIN. WE NEED MORE BROTHERS DOING THINGS LIKE THIS
Kevin Powell my dick whenever he wants. I like a black man in power, its so hot. Shout out to all my brothas in the barrier block.
I met Kevin Powell when he came to my college campus to speak about the state of people in this country. I can say we both share the same ideas about the sad state folks are in right now. If you look at some of the replies on this topic as well as others, you can tell how sad we have become. But when people like Kevin Powell and Spike Lee make comments contrary to what the ignorant masses want to hear, they make nonsense comments that don't have nothing to do with nothing. I think Powell will bring something to the table that has not been brought before. Unlike other black congressmen, Powell understands that a large segment of our community today is the hip hop generation, and he will bring issues that are relavent to us. I think Powell would be great for congress.
Powell a coon? What makes him a coon. In every aspect that I have seen this guy, he has been pro-black even when it was not cool to be.
When talking about coons, talk about 50 Cent. Cuba Gooding Jr. got nothing on this man.
Can we as a people get back to the important shyt in life so that these Repub-Ocrats will respect the black vote. Catz need to watch how "W" is controlling things and totally disregarding congress and doing whatever the hell he wants.
finally..a politician who isnt an old senile white guy ambivalent on all important issues and in some sot of corporate pocket
lets hope it isnt too good to be true

i think its sad that the only viable candidates your people can come up with are former reality tv stars and uncle toms like barack obama
not a racist, just real talk from a liberal in nyc
“Let's just face the facts black people will forever be cast down because they are always divided and keep seeing themselves as a color.
“Maybe if "black" people stop seeing themselves as a race and start seeing themselves as individuals apart of a diverse "human race" can change only BEGIN to happen.†– Mrs. Info
Mrs. Info, unfortunately while black folks may be able to forget how “black†they are, the rest of society will offer us gentle reminders.
Either it’ll be the police officer that pulls me over for no reason as I bump the latest Juvenile CD while pushing my Lexus.
Or, it’s the old, white lady that clutches her purse as I approach her even though I’m wearing slacks and a tie, and rushing to open a door for her.
With that said as long as your skin has melanin, folks will look at you and the rest of the sunburned folks as different.
So, the immediate question becomes, “if the color of our skin puts in the same boat, how do we advance?â€
I believe the answer is not by shedding our skin color, or by splintering in individual-drive sects. Instead, all occupants of “the boat†need to row that together, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll get somewhere.
And although there may never be leaders like Dr. King and Brother Malcolm, the premise that they left us – row together – still fits the bill.
Do that, and eventually, America will have to accept you and your black skin, which after all is the real American dream. Hopefully Mr. Powell subscribes to such.

speak the truth NOLAson. Oskie Woskie you are right Knowledge is Power, but did Farrakkan diss Tavis's book during the State of the Black Union address. Me personally I can feel where they are coming from, but they all do not live in that generation that we lived in. I think we need to be our own leaders. The last of the Great Leader was Martin Luther King Jr. There will never be another one like him. If it was, he/she would had been assisanated. Mumia Abu Jamal is the only guy that I will listen to for understanding of Black America and the world that surrounds us. FREE MUMIA

DO YO THANG MAN! YOU GOT MY SUPPORT!
Having a brother like Kevin in Congress would be a great thing to see. Would be great to have guys in office who care about issues and not just looking for a booster meal ticket.
Just for clarification the last post attributed to me --
"Stop using skin color as an excuse and go out and try to build yourself and community up."
--Ain't me.
Please don't bite the handle folks, come original!!!
Hey, what do you know, another blog fucked up by a bunch no-good, shiftless niggas, have you heard that black folks were responsible for the crime rate rising in Houston Texas?, yeah, those niggas from New Orleans, you know, the welfare recipients, are doing something terrible to people of Houston. Damn, just when you give them the benefit of the doubt, they set themselves back once again. It's sad that the only mothafuckas commiting crimes from the Hurricane Victims are black folks, just sad. I've heard that they're still complaining about not being helped the fucking government. I doubt that the government gave birth to your ass, but hey, entitlement once again shows up as a reason to help blacks. Stop complaining nigga, and get a job and stop killing the good people of Houston, becuase they carry rifles in their Pick ups. Oh, and as for Kevin Powell, never liked his pro-black ass, he WAS about the angriest black man with a chip on his that I've ever seen, next to Charles Barkley talk all that shit about White people but loved that white pussy. Kevin is probably a gay nigga anyways, I don't care about black people uniting because that will happen when we stop complaining. stop whining, stop drinking, stop smoking blunts. Why must we smoke the phattest blunts, why must we drink the Hardest liquor. Yes, it's advertised in our neighborhoods, but if you look at a middle class black neighborhood, there's no ad for Liquor nor cigarettes, that's called being in the suburbs, unfortunately, we can't control the ads in our ghettos becuase we can't even control the rent from going up, we don't own those homes, we just rent the apartments. whatever, too much
may his journey be fruitful. if he got the balls to run for congress/ senate/ whateva then hell i would vote for him depending on his cause. just as long as he doesnt play angry black man on capitol hill like he did on the first real world. Wait, maybe he should. DC -- Aint no place like it --
I hope Kevin wins and if I was in his district I'd vote for him. I hope he brings something new to the table and dosen't succomb to the pressure to fit in. Most politicians get into politics for the right reason (to make change for the better) but along the way they fall into the trap of playing by the current system, which is broken. One thing I don't understand is when people say they'll never be another MLK or Malcolm. This is true because there was only one of them, we can only be the first person that we are and there will never be another us either. There are black leaders worth listening to but we need the old guard(Jesse Jackson, Sharpton,Farrakan, etc.) to step aside.
To me the number one problem in the black community is the break up of the black family, it has been going on for centuries. That is where most of our problems start. we can't unify as a whole if our families aren't unified.
I don't know why ya'll put this on here, the majority of niggas don't know Kevin Powell or give a damn!

Damn..all we need to further destroy the seriousness of black people making strides. Kevin Powell is one of the worst representations I can see of the African American male in Congress and Politics as a whole. Bad enough we have drug dealers like Al Sharpton and infidels and extortioners like Jesse Jackson; a selfless, selfish, for lack of a better word prick is running for office. This former 'Real World' reality star is pompous, opinionated and can't take critism.
How many journalists has he assaulted just cause of unfavorable critiques.
Wasn't this dude one of the main instigators behind the media hyped "East Coast vs West Coast" beef that led to the deaths of 2pac & Biggie. Of which after they we're killed all he could say was "I didn't think it would lead to this" RIP BIG -March 9th- {Killed outside a VIBE magazine party - The magazine Kevin Powell wrote for}.
I've actually sat down with this dude and was appalled at how he nit picks at small issues and has so many opions and critisms to issues but no sound or sensible resolutions.
Another Strike for the Negro
Kevin - give it a rest - this isn't what we smart black women want; you're too violent & abusive & frankly not a good representative for anyone let alone black people! NO THANKS we don't need you!
Give it up Kevin. You have been exposed (Errol Louis - Daily News). Believe it or not, Black women read and vote. You just lost us.
We will not settle for you.
Charles Barron will represent us!

I've just been staying at home waiting for something to happen. Whatever. Not much on my mind lately. I guess it doesn't bother me.
I've more or less been doing nothing worth mentioning, but eh. My life's been really bland today. I don't care. I've just been letting everything happen without me these days. That's how it is.
I just don't have anything to say , but shrug. So it goes. Not much on my mind recently. I can't be bothered with anything recently.
I've just been hanging out not getting anything done. What can I say? I've basically been doing nothing worth mentioning, but pfft. Not that it matters. Pretty much nothing exciting happening to speak of. I haven't been up to much these days.

I just don't have much to say recently. Such is life. I've basically been doing nothing. Basically nothing seems worth bothering with. Oh well.
I haven't been up to much these days. Today was a loss. Nothing seems important. I've just been letting everything happen without me these days.
