New York's MTA Strike = Not Gangsta

"I told you- no women, no kids!" - Tony Montana

Ya'll may have already heard about the transit strike that has shut down New York today. The short story is that the workers want more money, the bosses don't want to give it to them. Typical stuff.

Now that the Transit Worker's Union (TWU) is on strike, they plan to launch a media campaign to paint themselves as freedom fighters, who only want a fair wage to compensate them for driving buses in circles and doling out change from their token booths. They even started a blog to make clear their demands, such as the absolutely essential 24% raise to their average salary of $63,000. (By the way- why the heck am I working as a writer? I need to learn how to push a pedal!)

I'm down for the workers getting all they can bleed from the MTA, though why do they have to drag all of New York into this? I'll do fine in this strike as well as my friends who work good jobs. We'll find a way around things- we're New Yorkers.

However, I have a friend in the Bronx and she's a single mom who works a retail job in Manhattan. Walking her young daughter to school will be hard enough, but I'm not even sure how she will get to her workplace on time or at all. For her, a lost hour means lost money, plain and simple. She'll work it out someway, but she'll have to tighten her belt while others exercise their "right" to get a few more chips in their check.

A little bit of the gangsta code would do well for the stikers- no women, no kids. There's got to be another way to work this out.

I am for the workers on this one. They are making between $47-55,000 a year. What the hell is that in New York's economy? The MTA is passing 3 billion dollar budgets and reporting surpluses of over a billion, and you tell me they can't give the workers a raise and better compensation? I bet you all of their executives are making at least 90,000 a year. Then they want to raise the pension from 55 to 62 years. That's crazy. It's about time america's workers stand up for what they believe in. Bloomberg can do what he wanna. Dude is a Billionaire, so it's not hurting him. Him trying to walk over the bridge is all politics, you think he really cares about the people that are hurting. Not to mention they keep raising transit fares. It's at 2 dollars now but for how long? Go TWU!!!

Posted by: Trey at December 20, 2005 2:44 PM

Plain and simple:
Fuck them, what if a fireman decided he aint making enough and let a kid burn on fire. They picked their job, now deal with IT, they want a better pay.. BUT WHAT DO THEY OFFER TO THE CITY????
THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT THE STRIKE IS... IT WILL TEACH THE GOVERMENT A LESSON(FOR THE 1234234TH TIME). HAVE A FUCKING PLAN B, they already know its gonna cost the city anywhere form 400-700 MIL, but assholes cant figure out something befor it happens!!!
Just like Katrina

Posted by: ONE at December 20, 2005 3:21 PM

I agree with Trey. The corporate media has been presenting this like the strikers are hurting working people. Talking about how inconvenient the TWU is making things. That's classic divide and conquer stragegy: trying to pit working people and against working people. And they will of course point to a case like your single-mom friend that can't get to work. But that is the wrong perspective on a larger situation. The TWU are working class people. They're all struggling to get by, too. And plenty of them are single moms; and all of them are trying to raise their families. All around the country you see rich bosses telling workers that they should take what they can get. TWU is standing up to that type of pimpery. That's the point of a strike: show lazy-ass bosses who were born into their money anyway who actually makes the city run: wokring people. Also: you might want to check into articles about the actual jobs done by the TWU. It isn't just pushing a pedal. They do some seriously hard work, under hard conditions. Working people need to stand by other working people. I support this strike, and I hope they get all their demans met.

Posted by: Blue Collar at December 20, 2005 3:23 PM

Y'all don't know what you are talking about. Our society works on a supply and demand system. If the city is suppling less than what the workers demand they should strike. Unions and strikes are the only way the poor have a fair chance against the rich. If it wasn't for Unions we would have never got pass the Industrial Revolution.
If a fireman strikes cause he thought he wasn't getting paid enough and the child dies its not the fireman's fault. Its the City's fault, we elect them to keep that shit from happening?!
No CONTRACT NO WORK!!

Posted by: CHeeKZ at December 20, 2005 3:30 PM

I'm with the TWU on this. Unless you work with Transit, you don't know what those people have to go through. You only see what you want to see. It is an inconvenience but I understand and hope they bring MTA to their motherfucking knees.

Posted by: Key from the City at December 20, 2005 3:31 PM

At first I did not side with the workers but- after listening to their rational for striking I do not blame them. They will not be able to have access to retirement funds until age 65 instead of 55(what if an emergency or disability occurs?) healthcare and other bounuses and the wage will not will not keep pace with the cost of living spending. To make an annual salary of 63 k you have to be working there for at least 10-15 years.
These transit workers also face health problems from being exposed to toxins and gases funder the ground for extended periods of time.
The majority of these workers are minorities that probably would not be hired in the private sectors because of racism and inopportunities that the corporate sector provides. Do not get it twisted the city is basically telling these worker to get back in the fields and shut up! This is a wake up call for all people that work at a company in the public sectors or private. Todaydue to tough economical times employers feeel that they can basically tell you to do & accept anything they want- and you have no say in the matter! NOT TO FAR FROM MODERN DAY SLAVERY!

Waaaaaa! I don't want to contribute to my medical benefits! I don't want to work past age 55! I don't want to contribute to my pension! Waaaaaaa!

The TWU needs to grow the fuck up.

Free medical? RETIRE with PENSION at FIFTY-FIVE?!? All of this "priviledge" because they carry a little card that says TWU on it and wear funny hats?

The world doesn't work that way. They don't justify their costs to the city in what they do; they work cush jobs and get paid too much for them. Let any of them put in one day in a workplace where they have to justify their existence beyond having a fucking pulse. I'd even settle for one of them speaking clearly at each stop. They don't want large increases and awesome benefits because they bring more value to the table. They want all this because they are 3 years older. Go to hell!

The *system* they are a part of benefits NYC, not only the *workers* in that system. I think it's safe to say the strikers did not design that system, and do little to improve it other than being cogs in the machine, and not particularly good ones at that.

This strike should teach them that. Their $60K salaries are more like $72K when you factor in what they SHOULD be paying towards services that everyone else pays for. They are lucky they get what they earn now.

I won't retire at 55. I'll be lucky to retire at 67, and the feds want to make that 70. And I will have put away every cent for retirement along the way, and paid for half my benefits to boot. I can get fired for not being useful. This is the way it works. It's called "being a grown-up."

Holding your breath until you turn blue is bullshit.

Fire them all and start from scratch. Make them re-apply for their jobs again with market terms. They need to learn how good they HAD it.

ZERO sympathy.

Posted by: Go Grow Up at December 20, 2005 4:19 PM

They're ignorant niggaz who dont give a fuck about the city, about hard-working families that risk their life walking to work(in the cold during Christmas season to feed their families.

SOLUTION: LOWER THEYRE SALARY 10% AND THOSE WHO DONT WANT THEIR JOB GIVE THEIR JOB TO THE HARD WORKING CITIZENs WHO HAVE TO WALK TO WORK(IF THEYRE QUALIFIED WHICH AINT HARD) CUZ THEY PROLLY MAKE LESS

P.S: ASK ANY 'COLLEGE EDUCATED TEACHER' IF THEY WOULDNT TRADE THEIR PAYCHECK WITH THESE FAGGOTS(who are making more money than some professionals)

Posted by: H at December 20, 2005 4:42 PM

That's the main reason I left NY and quit my job with TWU after only 3 fuckin months. I knew this would happen one day cuz they been threatening to strike 4ever. Bottom line is TWU workers are overworked and underpaid. That shit would drive anybody over the edge, especially with all those damn fumes they have to breath in all day every day. That was by far the worst job I ever had. To all those that have never worked there and don't know anybody who does work there, untill you know the full story you don't have a valid opinion

Posted by: ihatepublictransit at December 20, 2005 4:44 PM

You trynna say that TWU workers aint working people? They make more money than tachers yeah but what's that when a lot of your paycheck goes to doctors for all them damn breathing problems they accumulate from all the fucking fumes. And now they wanna take away some of their health benefits? Please, eventually MTA will have a multibillion dollar lawsuit on their hands just like a lot of other companies did after a lot of their older workers started dying from forms of lung cancer from breathing absbestos and shit like that on the job. That's too bad about those who need to use the transit for maybe 1-2 hours a day but that doesn't compare to the 8-12 they have to put in on a daily. They gotta do what they gotta do to ensure their own safety and longevity. To whoever that was that said fire all of em, the same shit will happen againa and again until the problem is resolved dummy. GO TWU!!!

Posted by: gotTWU at December 20, 2005 4:56 PM

WHAT ABOUT TEACHERS, WHAT ABOUT US WHO HAVE TO TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTAION.

EVERYONE DEALS WITH THE FUMES. GO TO COLLEGE IF U WANNA GET PAID MORE.
WHY NOT STRIKE IN THE SUMMER WHEN AT LEAST U AINT PUTTIN A LOTTA INNOCENT LIVES ON THE LINE THATS JUST FUCKED UP. THEYRE JUST LAZY ASS NIGGAs WHO DONT HAVE AN EDUCATION, AND MAKE WAY MORE THAN THEY SHOULD

P.S: WHAT STRIKERS SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT IS IF PEOPLE START DYING CUZ OF THEM... THEN THEY WILL REALLY BE RISKING THEIR LIFE, CUZ THATS WHO I WOULD GO AFTER!

Posted by: ULSEE at December 20, 2005 4:57 PM

"Go Grow Up" needs to wise up. That is the twisted perspective that rich-ass bosses like Bloomberg and the corporate media are pitching; and you are lapping it up. You are angry about your own working situation: that you would be "lucky if your retire at 67" and that you can get "fired for not being useful." And rather than doing something about it, you sit back and take it, saying that's part of "growing up." And then you get angry at working people that won't sit back and take it? If you want to live your life accepting crumbs off the table, that's you're (sad and wrong) decision. But taking whatever the bosses tell you to take is not "growing up"; that is just being well-trained. Your logic is all wrong here: this isn't about the TWU being overdemanding, unrealistic, or immature. That's just the line Bloomberg and company are selling. The only people buying that line are 1) rich ass people who believe it already; 2) ignorant people who don't know the facts; 3) probably perfectly nice people, who are just too well-trained, and have been taught that they shouldn't stand up for their rights. "Go Grow up" needs to check a history book: the only reason retirement age was ever even set at 65 was because of the history of unions and strikes. The only reason there's a minimum wage; that there's a 8-hour workday, and overtime pay if your work longer; and that you can have a weekend off rather than slaving away seven days a week; all that's because of unions and strikes. And yes, the feds are now trying to raise retirement age; and help businesses cut medical benefits and shit. Again: rather than take it, like mr. "Go Grow Up," TWU is standing up to them. Check the facts. And if you're angry about your work situation, direct that towards the boss. Don't be resentful against people working to provide for themselves and their families. And while you're checking the facts, I suggest you put on 1) Mos Def, "Mathematics" and 2) dead prez, "Hell Yeah (Pimp the System)." It's simple mathematics. Support the TWU strike.

"What about the teachers"? "What about people that have to take public transportation"? 'What about people dying"? Again: twisted logic. I'm starting to suspect that Bloomberg's low-level aids are posting here. As for the teacher's logic: a few years ago teachers were trying to go on strike; and what did people say to argue against them? Answer: "What about the students? Look how they suffer." That is bullshit. Teachers were trying to strike because their jobs were vital to the life of the community; and they deserved better pay and benefits. Same thing here: TWU workers are important; their jobs are important; and they deserve better pay and secure benefits. As for the "people dying" logic: again, ass-backward thinking. Ambulances are not on strike. As for inconvenience, of course it's inconvenient. It's a transit strike! This shows how important the TWU workers are. Man, I live un NYC and I of course take public transit everywhere cuz I can't afford a car. Again, though: I support another working person striking for his or her rights. I'm bothered by the inconvenience, but I direct my anger at Bloomberg. He needs to give them a fair contract. Go to TWU!

Posted by: Blue Collar at December 20, 2005 5:10 PM

All ya strikers sitting here typing on blogs while hardworkin parents are freezing walkin.

YOU'LL GET A NICE WELCOME BACK!!! IF U GET UR NEW CONTRACT

Posted by: OOO at December 20, 2005 5:14 PM

What is all this posting about working families having to walk because of the strike? As if this is a confrontation between TWU and working families. TWU is made up of working families! They've got kids; they've got mouths to feed. All ya'll posting about people having a hard time getting to work got it all confused; as if TWU is striking just to make it hard for people to get to work. Bloomberg want ya'll to think it's TWU against working people; that's why he did that bullshit walk across the bridge for the cameras this morning. TWU are working people! This strike is a confrontation between TWU (working peple) and Bloomberg. So if you're against the TWU strike, you are against working people, with kids to clothe and feed, and siding with Bloomberg, a rich-ass motherfucker who doesn't give a fuck about you or working families. Keep the facts straight; and stop with the confused logic nonsense. Also: I'm not in TWU, but I just came back from joining them on the picket line. You should try asking them directly why they're striking; rather then just listening to CNN or Bloomberg news coverage of it. Of course they're gonna focus on how it's hard for people. And I agree; it is hard. But everyone should be blaming Bloomberg and company, not other working people. There's a way to end the strike: Bloomberg needs to give them a fair contract. Like Mos Def said on "Katrina Clap": This ain't opinion; it's mathematical fact.

Posted by: Blue Collar at December 20, 2005 5:40 PM

I have no sympathy for these strikers...there is a reason why certain jobs are illegal to strike....what if cops went on strikes?? firemen?? doctors?? nurses?? these dudes want to retire earlier and they do not have a job as hard as a cop or fireman where they can't perform after a certain age...if they are medically unable to perform then that's different....I ride the subways everyday and it was so inconvenient for alot of people to get to work..especially with that car pool restriction...I was ok but I took a hit financially to get here and not looking forward to doing it daily for extended period of time....these workers might feel that they have valid points and that is debatable but do not put the whole city to suffer for ur cause...because when u raise fares..we suffer...when u strike...we suffer and when u get raises..we don't see the benifit...we just pay a higher cost...so the riders still are the loosers...that is selfish.

Posted by: DaStreets at December 20, 2005 5:48 PM

These people are selfish and inconsiderate people. think about they do not have a college degree and they are making 33.00 an hour and they are complaining. They are effecting the economy drastically. They knew what they were getting theirself into when they decided to work for the MTA. They will give in because they cant afford it. Their doing this at the wrong time-Christmas, rent will be due in the next 2 weeks. They will get their reality check when it is time to pay the bills.

Posted by: star at December 20, 2005 5:57 PM

this is the most disrespectful thing that has happen for the year of 2005. let me first begin by saying, like most new yorkers, we rise to the occasion. from 9/11, the black out, to this, we unify quite brilliantly to overcome cercumstances.

with this said, i origianly did support the union. i feel no matter what sector you work in (public or private), we are all due our just due. raises, bonuses, security, healthcare, we deserve the best possible. one thing though that is to be understood about anything regarding business though is you have to be prepared to give a little to get a little. if the twu had the proper bargaining tactics, they could gain something decent out of the mta. the employer is always going to cry the financial blues but, you have to know how to properly negotiate what you deserve.

but it seems when twu went into talks, everything from them was negative. it's what they say (twu) or nothing. the majority of them claim "it's not the money, it's the respect". this is not how you garnish respect! if anything, you lose it among most! how are you willing to drop the percentage of the yearly wage for less disciplanary actions? that's not bargaining! what are you doing that over 33,000 complaints are being placed against your workers? after 9/11 one of their main points should be proper equipment and training for an emergency (i.e terror attack). inside the tunnel they are our first responders and need to be able to protect themselves & the public.

here in ny i constantly face sleeping token clerks, non-informative conductors, super-fast train drivers and that's only a small start! they are rude, uncooperative, unpleasant and angry. if that's directed at mta, fine but unfortunately us, john q public get the brunt of it. hell, we pay for everything. when this stike is done, who do you think fits the bill? "the city", which is a word for tax payers.

i know people who make lil over $20,000 and pay part or all of their own healthcare. they would kill for a job like transit/bus workers. full benefits, retire at 55 (which is unheard of in private sector), a solid pension, ride the subway system for free(the mta is already taking a loss when you and family ride for free which is why WE get charaged for it). it's crazy.

they need to get off their high horse, get back to the bargaining table and iron out a deal. the mta is proposing to give them mlk day off, raises over three years of 3%, 4% & 3.5%, leave the retirement age at 55, but they ask for a 6% contribution to thier pension. you gotta meet them somewhere and i don't thing contribution to YOUR pension, something that benefits you, is asking alot.

in conclusion, twu get a deal done but more imprtantly GET BACK TO WORK! you're hurting us ALL. NO ON wins in a strike! and damn near x-mas of all times! you've just lost major support from the public. i'm not saying you guys don't face horrible conditions at your job, health wise but, you know what, as the old saying goes, piss or get off the pot. you don't like your job, then change jobs. you knew pretty much what you where getting into when you signed up for the job. if you know you're not a people person, then don't accept a job you know you will have problems doing. stop looking at your boy or your chick who who got an mta job and says it's all good making 50K a year buying cars, eating well, dressing right. find out the specifics of the job. don't automatically agree to the job just for the doe then want to strike 3 years later. get focused man!

Posted by: female done at December 20, 2005 6:19 PM

When most working people have a problem with their pay or benifits, do they go on strike? NO! What do they do? They go to their boss, and ask for a raise. And if the boss says no, then they either stay at the job or they go find a new one! Why must it be different for MTA workers? If they are unhappy, go get a new job. Good luck finding one that pays anywhere near as much as they are getting with their education level.

Posted by: Julie at December 20, 2005 6:33 PM

I see a lot of the above posters lack a basic understanding of the labor history of this country, and a lot of the comments like "grow up" and "fire them all" aren't constructive.

I'm all for the strike personally... Like an earlier poster said, a lot of people are buying the company and City Hall line blaming the TWU. The union isn't perfect, but, the MTA is corrupt.

Let's talk about the fare hikes.

Let's talk about the surplus.

Posted by: Be constructive at December 20, 2005 6:53 PM

ok...
I read...and read...and read.

Does anybody know why the strike occured? Matta fact...does anybody kno anything about unions? Do you know why there's social security and benefits? does anyone know why shifts are 8 hours? does anyone know why there's minumum wage? its becuz unions were formed (and strikes occured). I understand that you all are reeling because of the strike but they've been threatening to strike for years. The reason behind is because they no longer have a contract. Yes, they are promised all of these things under the old contract but if the city wants to be a dirtbag they can say we no longer honor it. you know what that means? that means that u can work for the next 40 years and go to get your pension(which is equivalent to SSI) and they say. well u weren't under contract at the time of your hiring so we dont have one for you. FUCK DAT! DAT IS BULLSHYT! the city knew. this has been goin on since the late 90's. the only people who u can point a finger at is the city. again, its very unfortunate for the working class (non rail workers) but they chose their representative and he decided not to honor their requests. I'm just pissed off i wont be able to hop on the train when i get home and go to my house. I GOTTA FUCKIN WALK FROM CHINA TOWN MAN! but yea...this is YOUR government LOOKING OUT FOR YOU. if u voted for Bloomberg then enjoy.

Posted by: apr0bl3m at December 20, 2005 7:11 PM

one thing everyone must remember, the CITY does NOT control the mta. that is why bloomberg has not stepped in. it's pataki that has the control. i do agree he should at least be sitting in during the talks if nothing else. show that he represents the "city" (taxpayers) fairly.

with that said, yes, i do understand that this country's labor status is contributed to unions fighting for what's right & fair. thanks to them, we are much further ahead regarding our working conditions but, at the same time, a strike needs to be warranted for the right reasons. i could see the fire fighters or police going on strike. because they risk their lives everyday (cops seems to be getting hurt or killed here every other week)they definetly deserve just due. cops only make starting salaries in the late 20's. i do not know the firefighters beg. salary but, it's not what it could be for someone who risks there lives everyday & it's now where near the transit workers. what helped to build up the unions back then (the way of thinking) is totally different now. times, generations and ways of thinking have changed. those of us who were around 3 or 4 in 1980 when it first took place are now 28 & 29 and think differently than our parents so, imagine time over from back when to now! point being, when striking make sure everything is valid. back then, their points were valid across the board. beliefs were worth dying for was the mentality. these days a strike is something to do, with out much validatity. like a vacation day. people jumping in front of the tv camera looking ignorant, yelling crazily. how can anyone take you seriously? i gurantee you there is not ONE woman or man on the line worth dying for their "cause". not that they should have to but, i'm saying that to use comparison from then to now. if you're going to make a statement do it all the way. for crying out loud they claimed they were going to strike last friday, then pushed it back to today. they were hoping mta would buckle under pressure and have a deal for them by today!? this "tissant" dude should know the machine he is going against before taking it on. they are corrupt on every level (mta), so i am in NO way on their side, but the twu is playing theirselves. they want the deal bloomberg gave the other unions "tissant" says. THEY'RE NOT UNDER THE CITY ANYMORE. GET BACK TO WORK BEFORE YOUR JOB GOES TO SOMEONE WHO WILL GLADLY TAKE YOUR WAGES, HEALTHCARE, PENSION AND RISKS!

Posted by: female don at December 20, 2005 7:37 PM

TWU is reppin' the workers,

MTA is reppin' themselves,

Who's representing the people who missed work or had to walk there?

What about the people that are getting paid $6 an hour? Seems like the Union are reppin the wrong people

I am sympathetic to the MTA workers, but who are we supposed to be angry at when we can't get where we need to go? It's like taking 7 million hostage in this "negotiation"

Toussaint went against the national TWU board who said not to strike, because there are better ways to deal with the prob. And they are not going to pay for the mess they made. So I bet if the workers made any money off this deal, they would have to pay more money to the TWU to pay for this illegal strike fine.

So in the end, who gains and who loses?

Posted by: Stuck at December 20, 2005 8:24 PM

These people earn more than teachers. My 1st job in dental publishing paid me $27,500/yr & I have a BA in English. They even get paid better than teachers in NYC. Their benefits package is top-tier. They're doing a job that serves the city of NYC just as well as doctors, nurses, teachers, firemen, & the police & no way in hell would they be excused for this shit if they were to pull this.

I work on Park Avenue & I'm fortunate enough to not have to rely on any MTA train since I only have a 4-block walk from 6th Avenue (I take the PATH from Jersey) but it's kinda sad having to hear my man tell me that it took him an hour to get to 57th Street from LES on foot & having to hear the stories of my coworkers who are coming in from the outer boroughs. My supervisor had to call out & so did my other coworker. People are being inconvenienced & it's just not right.

I sided w/ the TWU at 1st but after seeing the BS that the commuters have to go through, I can't really ride w/ them on this 1. Especially when you consider how well-paid they are w/ only a high school education.

Posted by: JerseyBred at December 20, 2005 8:53 PM

Unions made the middle class, Unions made America. Unions are the reason why us people with college degress were able to get them. Don't fuck it up and support big money.

If we have to suffer, than guess what, we suffer. It was the government's job to maintain the subway system. NOT the TWU. If the gov't doesn't pay the TWU enough to work (according to the principles of simple supply and demand) than don't blame the workers. You are not their responsiblity, your the gov't.

You guys keep saying, if they don't like what their bosses offered them than they should just quit, they did all at once! HAHA!

Yo, "U.S. Govt." 1) needs to chill. and 2) needs to get his logic straight. That is the oldest bullshit response: "if you don't like it, leave the country." Stupid. As if it's that easy. Plus, that shit is beside the point. TWU workers, and all of us that support their strike (even though we are inconvenienced by it) have a right to be here; and have the right to make demands; and have the right to protest. And again: the only reason you're in a situation where you can state the bullshit wrongheaded opinion is because working people have protested. As for the claim about 3rd world countries: read the news. There have been strikes and demonstrations in India, China, and most of Latin America all this past year. Shit, just this week South Korean farmers shut down Hong Kong while the WTO meetings were going on. Because that's how working people win good working conditions and pay; and maintain them after they win them: they strike and they demonstrate. As for the gratitude logic: this isn't about charity. The government doesn't give you shit because it's nice. The only good things won for people in the history of this country is because people held strikes, demonstrated, or protested.
Finally, to answer "Stuck," who had a good question ("Who are we supposed to be angry at when we can't get where we need to go?"). The answer is be angry at the MTA for not giving the TWU a fair contract. And let's be clear: this isn't a small group of people just striking for fun. The TWU is over 33,000 workers (and you can add to that the families depending on them). This isn't striking for kicks. This is real serious business. Also, you might want to check the latest news story on this. It's just been reported that the MTA pulled a bullshit move at the last minute: This from the NYTimes just now: "But then, just hours before the strike deadline, the authority's chairman, Peter S. Kalikow, put forward a surprise demand that stunned the union. Seeking to rein in the authority's soaring pension costs, he asked that all new transit workers contribute 6 percent of their wages toward their pensions, up from the 2 percent that current workers pay. ... Roger Toussaint, the president of the union, Local 100 of the Transport Workers Union, said the pension proposal, made Monday night just before the 12:01 a.m. strike deadline, would effectively cut the wages of new workers by 4 percent." Again, the article says: "Yet for all the rage and bluster that followed, this war was declared over a pension proposal that would have saved the transit authority less than $20 million over the next three years. It seemed a small figure, considering that the city says that every day of the strike will cost its businesses $440 million to $660 million in lost revenues." So, let's do the math: The MTA tries this last-minute move, that would have only saved the city less than $20 million, and would rather go through a strike that costs (by their own estimate) around $500 million a day. MTA is stupid. And TWU was looking out for its workers; which is what it's supposed to do. It wasn't going to let them cut the wages of new workers. I wish I was in a union like the TWU that will stick up for its workers. Shit, the article even quotes the city's own Labor Commissioner, saying the MTA's move was dumb: "Robert Linn, a former New York City Labor Commissioner, questioned the transportation authority's decision - with the backing of the mayor and governor - to go to the mat over pensions with a union that can exact huge pain on the city in a year when the authority was enjoying a $1 billion surplus." Again: do the math. The city is in a $1 billion surplus right now. That's our tax dollars. And rather than settle this contract negotiation, the MTA, backed by Bloomberg, is tryin' to fuck with these workers. Who to be mad at over this inconvenience? The MTA and Bloomberg. That shit is so obvious. Go TWU!

Posted by: Blue Collar at December 20, 2005 11:05 PM

The TWU is full of shit. They make ENOUGH fucking money as it is and are demanding raises that are pretty much unheard of in other industries. They can't afford to raise their families or buy a co-op on their salaries? Boo fucking hoo--they're not indentured servants, they can quit and get another job whenever they want to. Those of you who hope they get all they want--will you feel the same way when your fare gets doubled as a result?

Posted by: NYCguy40 at December 20, 2005 11:56 PM

I feel for the TWU, but one thing that's comes to my mind is what's going to happen when the next 3year contract is up are we going to go through this shit again and again until we die or hopefully move out, damn what is going on with our city

Posted by: The Real at December 20, 2005 11:58 PM

I am definitely mad at the TWU for the inconvenience of having to trek 2 miles in freezing cold weather, but I am more mad at the MTA. Ultimately, preventing this whole debacle was in the MTA's hands. But I honestly don't think they thought the strike would happen. They were being arrogant. They didn't prepare. Again.

I think the subway system as a whole is totally f-ed up in NYC. $2 is a lot to pay for a train that always comes late (waiting 15 minutes for a train in rush hour is NOT acceptable), or stops mid-tunnel all the time, or aburptly ends routes. It's just a crazy, dirty, tardy system. But they try to disguise themselves as organized with endless ads, cute little subway passes, the whole "aura" of the New York subway.

But I've been on many subways in many cities, in the U.S. and Europe, and New York's subways are one of the worst.

Perfect example: One day in the Union Sq. station, I needed to check the map in the main area right past the turnstiles. There wasn't a single map on the wall anywhere! But there were tons of wall advertisements. It was just bizarre.

And in Brooklyn and the Bronx especially, the train stations are dirty, the platforms are dangerously narrow, there aren't enough seats. The tiles on the walls are falling off, garbage cans are overspilling, paint is cracking and peeling.

It just shouldn't be. There needs to be a breakthrough. Subway riders should unite to get their complaints heard.

That is Ridiculous.....THey are pampered employees who want the higher wages for less labor...Striking is not the answer...You want a good job go to college Bitches!!! Get a real job...If you cant just except that TWU does not match your contribution to your gucci-retirement fund...It is survival of the fittest...Get with it or thats your ass...

Posted by: JOse at December 21, 2005 3:17 AM

Hell yeah go to college to get a better Job.You are a bus Driver. How much money do you want!!! Ya'll out your damn minds with that shit. I got to trek my ass to work cause of ya'll. I should cut one of those workers with the picket signs lol

Posted by: Fuck that at December 21, 2005 3:25 AM

While we will all agree that the strike is not gangsta, per se, it seems other people think the Union is comprised of gangsters. Mayor Bloomberg in his address, said, "their leadership thuggishly turned its back" on New York." Thuggishly?? Sorry, Mr. Mayor there is no such word. His response seems to conceal a deep-seated racial sentiment. What are your thoughts people??

Posted by: RD at December 21, 2005 5:30 AM

Strikes suck because they hurt everybody. It hurts the consumer, it hurts the employee and the employer. As a member of a union, I feel like if i was getting fucked over at my job then yeah, i would probably strike too. I think where these unions get it twisted is to strike during the holidays. Like anybody that has a job and works can sympathize with strikers, because management in general will try to get over on you whenever and however they can. It's not about people with them, it's about money. So if you going to strike of course you want to strike when the most money is out there, which is the holidays. At the same time, you not only hurting your employer, you hurting the people that WOULD support you. My credit union went on strike like 2 years ago during the holidays, and even though I felt them on why they were striking, I couldn't support them because they were making shit harder on me! If you really cared about your customers then you would realize that sometimes they need you regardless of whether management appreciates you.

Posted by: iowjrfigopij at December 21, 2005 8:51 AM

I understand the reasoning for the strike. I feel as though when you have been working with a company for such a long period of time, and your not getting what you feel you are rightfully due, then you have to do what's neccesary to get what you want. I'm sure we all know that this is not the first time that the MTA has treaten to stike, so its obvious that between the first attempt and now, nothing was accomplished. I put myself in those workers shoes and say what if it was me. The cost of living in NY is increase rapidly, and if your now being compensated enough to keep up with cost of living increase, then its only a matter of time before we all go under water. Its unfortunate that everyone has to suffer. But at the end of the day some one gonna have to fold . We just hope that its before Christmas.

Hashim:

You are a clown.

For you to write such a thing behind your computer screen at your office job where you can't possibly relate to these people is purely simple-minded.

Working underground in dark, fume-filled, dangerous tunnels is gangsta. Standing up for yourself and your rights -- even in the face of being fined and condemned as thugs -- that's gangsta. Standing outside all day on a picket line in 20 degree whether while ignorant ass folks like yourself leer and blame you for being selfish -- that's gangsta.

Obviously, Hashim, you've gotten a bit bourgouisie and unable to relate to the real hood struggle. You, Hashim, are absolutely NOT GANGSTA.

Posted by: big squid at December 21, 2005 10:12 AM

I could give a flying fu/k about the trains cause i havent taken them in years but I side with the union workers on this one they got the balls to stand up to the powers that be and Shut it Down now a few of you on here are a little pissed off because you cant get to work or have to walk so be it, Pull your skirts up and lace up your hiking boots a hoof it.The MTA is pimping its workers and the riders and some of you actually think its the TWU fault,Just cause some of you shmucks listen to whatever your boss says dosent mean they have to some of you say they make alot of money probably compared to your own paychecks but in reality they are underpaid,That pay might be okay if you live in a section 8 Apt and dont mind being stacked up like pancakes but if you have Morgage,CarNote, insurance,Light
Water,Gas,Phone,Cable,Food and thats just the basics 63k a year is not nearly enough to pay your your bills not to mention inhale fumes for over 8 hours a day and also have to put up with the attitudes of disgruntled employees in the Morning & Evening rush hour thats kibbles.I applaud the TWU

Posted by: StayLow at December 21, 2005 10:34 AM

New Yorkers always bitching about something. Us philly residents just went through a strike. Shit we go through a major strike basically every year. This shit about transit drivers striking isnt anything major to me.

Toughen up. Find another way instead of bitching about it. This is how mass transit prices go up so easily. Because they know for a fact that you people depend on it greatly.

Posted by: caff at December 21, 2005 10:45 AM

Big Squid and the rest, ya'll gotta understand something about me. I worked a city job for years. When 9/11 happened I headed to work to see how we were planning to respond. When the blackout happened I stayed at work for hours helping to coordinate the emergency plan.

City service is something I take seriously. I also believe in worker's rights. I was out their with the rest of my union protesting for a better contract.

City service is different than the private sector. You serve the citizens of New York, and you don't let your beef with management overflow into the job you do.

You have a responsibility that's beyond just yourself. Teachers understand that. Nurses understand that. The police understand that. Firefighters understand that.

The MTA workers don't. That's why they're the only union who striked 3 times in this city. They don't get it.

It worked before for them, and that's the problem. It cannot be allowed to work now.

Posted by: Hashim at December 21, 2005 10:55 AM

once again I cannot be sympathetic with the TWU...no matter what benefits they get out of theis strike..us teh general public has to pay for it...so why do we the general public have to suffer to pay more just to ride ur system to give u more benefits...like I said before....there is a reason why it is illegal for certain people to strike..because the risk is more than the reward...what if terrosit decide to strike right now...look how many people are affected and stranded....

these people in the TWU do not want to pay for their own benefits..what type of shit is that..do u know how many people make less money with more education and pay for their OWN benefits?? what about people who make less like buss boys in restaurants and get no benefits and have to feed a family?? their are alot of people in worse situations than these transit workers and deal with it each day because they have families...

for all the offers that the MTA has put on the table..the TWU is looking real selfish...did yall knwo that alot of teh offers would only affect new hires and not people who are already in the system....

what if the government took control and decided to revamp the whole system and decided to make this a federal job and these people would just have to take whatever benefits they get...point blank...to be inconveniencing an entire city is not the answer...

cause no matter what the TWU gets in the end..the public still looses.

Posted by: DaStreets at December 21, 2005 10:56 AM

Throwing in a couple cents I don't think I've seen said yet:

Hashim,

Another difference between MTA workers and the other essential public services you listed is that the TWU guys work for a corrupt ass, mafia ridden gang of crook ass bitches. The services that are on strike also aren't governed by the region they operate in. That's a major reason why they've been getting the dick sandwich for so long.

P.S.: NYPD, NYFD wouldn't even be THREATENED to be jerked to the point that a strike would even be a serious consideration. MTA called TWU's bluff one too many times. This strike has been looming for years now.

Posted by: Ron Mexico at December 21, 2005 12:40 PM

Ron Mexico, you're wrong. NYPD makes less on average than Long island cops and have a starting salary of $25,000- less than a token booth clerk.

They've been fighting to change that, legally and reasonably.

The transit workers aren't hurting like you think. If an average salary of $50 grand a year is a "d--k sandwhich" then I want...wait, nevermind.

Posted by: Hashim at December 21, 2005 2:06 PM

The union's demands are unrealistic and its tactics irresponsible. It is the union that is primarily to blame for the strike.

If the MTA moves even a scintilla toward the union's negotiating position as the result of this strike, it would reward the union's illegal behavior and send to the dozens of other unions who do business with the state, the city, and the public authorities a message of appeasement — that if you want a better contract, go on strike, even if it is against the law. That may be how things work in Latin America or Paris, or how they used to work in the New York of the 1960s and 1970s, but it is not a way to run a successful city in the competitive global economy. It's a recipe for making New York's state and local tax burden, already among the nation's heaviest, even worse. The right move for the MTA now — the only move, if it is going to avoid a strike every time a contract is up for renegotiation — is to take an extremely hard line with the Transport Workers Union Local 100. As a first step, the MTA could refuse to negotiate with this union until the workers are back on the job. If that fails, the authority can begin hiring and training permanent replacement workers. The strikers mustn't be permitted to escape the full penalties of the Taylor Law, which include docking workers' pay and jailing the union leaders.

One reason riders are in such a pickle is that the MTA is a government monopoly. If the subway were the way it was during its heyday of expansion, various private companies, each with their own labor contracts and policies, would be competing. So a strike on the IRT wouldn't necessarily mean a strike on the IND. And rather than every subway line in the city being shut down in a strike, there would be an alternate route. It's one reason that instead of a Metropolitan Car Rental Authority we have Hertz and Avis and Thrifty and Budget and Dollar and Alamo and National and Enterprise. Competition results in better pricing and service and reliability. So that if the Hertz agents go on strike, there are other companies to rent from. Not so with the MTA. It's time to break the monopoly. A good place to start, as Nicole Gelinas suggests in today's New York Sun, would be by genuinely privatizing some of the MTA's bus lines. The subways could come next.

but I gotta say this is really funny coming from a city that taught me so much about how market economics on its most simple levels truely works...

lemme get this straight...ya got no degree, no defineable skills to offer the private sector job market (chingada, my man's pop was TWU and that cat was drunk who got socked for pinching my sack..)you got an island fulla highly educated overqualified 20somethings scramblin to get the Chai back before it gets cold, all of whom make like a third of what you do and somehow gente suppose to feel bad cuz now insteada the dirt yall call treez in ya lungs something akin to PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS might maybe be a problem we think , not sure though??.(all the big words in previous posts I had to trump ya..punto!)

BOTTOM LINE! Your MTA isnt Homestead Mill, and try living in AZ where mi gente are getting pushed up on by legislation that makes Coyote labor more profitable than job banks for employers and really affords the workers no slack. These idiots should be mad at the Top Brass of the MTA, such as Kaliko, NOT the workers , who, don't get no respect and get paid "alot" less than the Long Island Railroad(which is also owned by the MTA).

I bet if the MTA was predominantly white, like it used to be, they would have gave the workers a better contract.

Also, these uncle tom negroes(especially at hot 97) would probably have sympathy for the MTA workers, if it was all white, instead of the Black Majority.

Fuck Hot 97, for bashing the MTA workers, who, are majority Black and Hispanic.

Hot 97 should be bashing the big suits of the transit, who are keeping the billion dollar surplus for themselves and not giving the workers a decent contract, which would have stopped this strike in the first place. If the contract was fair, it would have been no strike, PERIOD.

So, I blame the Top Brass of the MTA, Bloomberg and Pataki for making it worse, by bashing the workers.

So, fuck the heads of the MTA, Fuck Bloomberg, Fuck Pataki, Fuck Hot 97 and all the other media bashing the minority "transit workers" instead of the heads of the MTA. I stand behind Robert Toussaint for saying Fuck You to the government. He is truly gangsta for that.

I can't believe the some side with the MTU on this. 1) This strike is ILLEGAL (like the immigrants who will soon be taking the MTU jobs for less money and be happy to have it) 2)The excess capital is not the union's, it's the public's and should be either used to improve service or returned to the public in the form of severely discount prices, or free service. If a mistake was made with the amount of excess funds in the bank, it was either an over charging of the public or a failure to plan to utilize the funds. Why some feel it's the MTU employees is beyond me. 3) I have a Master's degree and 20 years work experience in my field and currently only make 63K, I'm not angry, I'm a realist. I earn my wage and I like most, won't be able to retire until I'm 67. I pay part of my health care benefits, and my employer contributes 2% match into my retirement. So what makes the MTU workers "special"? Education? Work experience? hmmm, the fact they'll stand up and whine? Yes, the last one. As far as what the unions have supposedly done for this country? Check with Air Traffic Controllers, Delta, GM, Chrysler, and Consolidated Freightways they have effectively killed many great companies with their benefits. Lets not forget Jimmy Hoffa too, a real prize of the union effort. I SOOO sick of this entitlement attitude. Yes they have a right to demand more pay, benefits, etc. they also have the right to be unemployeed. Grow Up is right! With the huge pay checks these the MTU workers are getting they could go to college - if they wanted to work for something. The economy is changing, American UNION workers are generally over paid, MTU workers appear to be WAY overpaid. The closer we get to a world economy, the more these union workers soon realize they can't continue on this path when the unions were needed during the "sweat shop" era - the day of the union power is not needed any more. So roll up your sleeves, get back to work and stop ruining everyones Christmas.

Fire them all and start from the scratch no matter how long it takes! $63,000? WhO the fuck they are thinking they are!!! I have a master degree and work my ass off through school and at work and I don't even make that much! They are greedy and I DON'T respect them at all!

If I was the mayor, I'd be training people to drive buses like mad right now. While the MTA and the TWU quibble about their issues, the fact of the matter is people need a way to get to work. The MTA and the TWU both have obligations to serve the public.

The one and only true way to solve this problem? A fight to the death. 5 reps from the MTA vs. 5 from the TWU. Before you laugh, hear me out. The best out of 5 wins everything they ask, with limits set by a supreme court judge. While this fight is going on between the 5 reps from each organization, the rest of the workers are back on their routes, takin people back to work, goddamnit.

TWU - You guys are making a statement that is being heard the loudest by your peers, who have no power to help you. I see a lot of comments in your support, and you are punishing those people the most. also, it's fuckin christmastime, for crying out loud. You couldn't do this shit after new years???

MTA - FUck you you fuckin prick bastard motherfuckers. Raising the pension from 55 to 67 when you got a fuckin surplus you fuckin hellbound fucks. I hope God shaves 10 years off of each and every one of your fuckin executive lives because he thinks your existence is taking too much surplus from good, hardworking people you fuckin satanic motherfuckers.

Who's complaining about their salary? The MTU workers, and if turn about is fair, based on what Smartee says, if they want more money go to school and get better pay for more job knowledge and responsibility. The public owes the MTU workers NOTHING. Retiring at 55 is NOT suffering. They are a group of spoiled, welfare receiving assholes! That's what it is, welfare with a job. MTU, stop whining, and get back to work! I still cannot believe they would put the public through this just because the MTA wants to start making their salaries in line with what the general public is making. Fire them ALL, train the monkeys (5 minutes) to do their jobs. There is NOTHING special about an MTU employee or their training - most can do it, so why do they have one of the best retirement packages in the nation? They say they're "not respected" why should they be? They're not performing a job requiring high skills or training, they are over paid, can retire early, and are whining about not getting raises they DEMAND - what's to respect, work ethic? doing a difficult job for low pay? Risking their lives for the public (police and fire)? No to any of the above - get real, they don't deserve nor have they earned respect. They actually have demonstrated to everyone now they do not deserve respect - more so now than ever.

Before you condemn my words, think of the elderly and disabled who can't walk. The MTU are a bunch of assholes, and I hope they fire the lot of them, disban the union and hire people who care for the public they work.

Hey, Hashim, fuck you and your bullshit, you should be in one of those transit workers shoes for a day and see how these hungry-ass niggas are always trying to get a fucking free meal, I agree with all that they ask for, shit, there's a billion surplus and you don't want to compensate them, fuck MTA, I'm not from NY, but you know what, everybody would adapt to it if they had to go back to using horses, then fuck it, it's done, nothing bad about that, I've heard stories and I've worked for the public and I can see how these workers feel. while you're up in your office typing, public workers have to face nonsensical niggas that berate them on a daily basis. and this isn't in NYC, but I've been to NYC, and ya'll mothafuckas are nothing but a bunch of leaches to me so fuck every mothafucking'"Survivin" New Yorker that thinks this sucks, if you don't like, get an education, so you can get yourself a damn car and drive, Nigga, as for your friend, she should've kept her legs closed and gone to School to get an education so she could have a good job, don't blame the workers, you could get cancer working in the fucking subways, or didn't you know that already. Oh, I forgot, you're a New Yorker, you'll survive, die with cancer nigga, All of NY stinks like trash everytime I go there to Manhattan, nothing nice about NYC. I used to wonder what all the hype was about, but when I got there, you have a million niggas panhandling downtown, niggas running scams on your left and right, and rude mothafuckas all over the place, and the worst is that blacks and latinos, AND white people are always on some charity shit everytime I go to NJ through NYC, so don't act like you're friend is gonna get fucked, help her ass out, negro

Posted by: Damn at December 22, 2005 12:58 PM

all I know is that it's very dangerous to work in them tunnels, I used to take an amtrak train from CT to PA and everytime I went through NYC, I would get the meanest mofos in there and you had some mean workers there too, I mean, shit, I don't care, they dont' have an education, but still they are doing a job just like any gottdamn immigrant would to keep themselves afloat, that MTA has been treating them like shit for a while and believe me they had it coming. if you've never worked for the public, then trust me, you'll never know what it's like to be the TWU. some of these people get threatened, or worse, beat-down just for breathing on a nigga, and you know how niggas are with their non-education-having asses. NYC has more than it's share of crazy mothafuckas so I don't blame them for going on strike, for the teachers that have to go to school, fuck them too, they made the choice of either getting themselves a car or commuting on train, hey, if that's how they decided, then that's them, so fuck them, I don't care about non of that, because that's what the TWU was probably banking on, you know that it's really needed so why not strike while the iron's hot, and we have all these gas prices high as hell and it's gonna go even higher in January, man, they better do something before we go back to the stone age, or with that surplus, the MTA can get everybody in NYC a brand new bike to go to work, how's about that since they don't want to give a raise. Modern slavery, man, modern mothafuckin' slavery.

first of all people the twu has a right to be angry. i have family who are striking so i understand.my brother has 6 kids,a wife and pays 1200 dollars a month in rent.

from what im hearin on television, reading newspapers and hearin from my relatives mta is trying to take all medical benifits away and replace them with an 8 percent raise in income. based on a 64K annual salary after workin there for 15years that is olny 5120 extra dollars. my sister in law makes sure that their kids stay up on their medical check ups at a price of 60dollars per kid. by the end of the year that they spend 4320 not to mention the other hospital trips with out rageous prices. how would you feel if you couldnt provide your seeds with good health care and your working for a company with a surplus of a billion dollars? but wait how would you feel if your boss wanted to tell you that you can only get your pension retirement funds at 62 when most of the workers will either be injured or dead by that time, mta is alll about cheatin their workers on this one, people put ur self in twu's, busses, trains, and garages, see what they see and endure then you can comment

Posted by: tryeik at December 22, 2005 2:27 PM

does anybody remember that Trashman Strike back in the eighties, I heard that it was so bad, NYC stank for days and kids were getting their fingers bitten clean off by Rats that would intimidate Cats, yes, this strike is needed, if they could do it in them times, they can do it now, so I'm with the TWU. they need this shit, and those corporations cats are too fuckin'greedy anyways. Best thing to ever happen was this gas-prices-going up business. I say it's about time, they go through hell with these New Yorkers, and for what, to get their bennies cut down, fuck that, cops can atleast arrest your ass for fucking with them, they don't even get heard when they file complaints. so whatever, if you dont' work their or you've never worked for the public, then you shouldn't talk, because the public isn't always nice, and in NYC it's probably even worse, so save your comments if you don't know

Posted by: Nigga at December 22, 2005 2:46 PM

tryeik why is it the public's responsibility to support your brother having 6 kids? He put himself in that situation. How well-off would he be if he had 2 kids? none? He would be much better off. I don't think the strike was justified and the timing is really bad. Now a fireman is in the hospital indirectly because of the strike. I pay 1325 for my mortgage, 535 in child support, 250 for my health care for my family and still have plenty of money left to do the thing I want to do. 62K a year is plenty especially with an early, fully funded retirement. That's 12 years earlier than most people receive.

As far as my boss telling me I'll get my retirement at 62? It's already and has been set at 67 and is scheduled to be raised to 70 (social security) and I do contribute what I can to my company's 401K plan as they match some of my contributions. This is what most other people in the nation have. I will probably be dead before retirement comes but maybe my kids will have something. And again, I ask, what makes the MTU workers more special than the rest of the nation? The fact they whine and have been coddled for years. I hope they get nothing but fines.

On another note, I'm not without reason - I do understand there are literally hundreds of corporate execs reaping massive salaries when the companies they are running the companies into the ground. Workers are receiving low pay, while the execs live on yatchs. This needs to be fixed as well, but this strike was NOT the way to get things done.

I still believe the strike was a good thing.

If nobody stands up to these corporate executives, the little people will always get their pensions & medical benefits taken away. Meanwhile, these corporate fuckers, will still have their pensions and medical benefits.

This is for all the people saying the strike is not good because, they get the same type of fucked up benefits or less.

And this is also for the people saying, that, the time was not right for a strike.

Check this out, if nobody stands up, there will be no changes for better work conditions.

Shit, if Rosa Parks, didn't "illegally" stay in her seat when a white person wanted it, blacks would still have to give up their seats to whites today.

And you had some black idiots back then, that, said, Rosa shouldn't have did that, at that time.

When is the right time to stand up for your rights, idiots??
