For what seems like the 57th time, Vibe Magazine has Mary J. Blige on the cover.
Other than the cover subject, nothing is generic about this month's issue. Actually, it's probably the best Vibe I've read in years, and if other mags are smart they'll steal study what Mimi Valdés' crew is doing over there.
Here's what worked-
- Bridging the Gap- The feature stories on Mary and Carlos Santana do a great job of exposing new information about the artists for long time fans, while bringing new heads up to speed on the significance of both icons. I'm one of those kids who'd heard Santana's "Black Magic Woman" and "Oy Como Va" yet didn't know his album Abraxas is considered one of the best of all time.
- Short Attention Span Theater- Especially for the Mary story, Vibe went overboard on the sidebars. There was even a sidebar about what was poppin' when her first album came out, listings things like Clinton's sex scandal. Related to Mary? Loosely. Entertaining? Yess'r.
- The Revolution Will Be Downloaded- A few sidebars also included a mixtape-like track listings of suggested songs to download if you want to really get into the artist. For Santana, it was a list of Hip-Hop songs that he's played on or been sampled by. That little bit of info probably save me hours of scouring through Santana's back catalog looking for material I can instantly relate too. And it's a recognition by Vibe that I have the desire and ability to cherry-pick what songs I want from the artist (thank you iTunes!) rather than invest in the whole album straight out.
