Elliott Wilson's Letter Promoting the XXL Raps Album

Imagine my confusion today when I received a personal sounding email from Elliott Wilson, the head of XXL Magazine. If you've been reading this blog for a while you know that I've had to chin-check Wilson multiple times for writing in his screwball editorials such nonsense as, "I"m ready for a blogger geek burial.'"

The email turned out to be a generic blast sent out to media types requesting interviews to promote XXL's upcoming compilation album, Raps. Too bad. I thought Elliott wanted to get into a bidding war to hire me away from SOHH. Well, maybe next year.

It took me less than a minute to figure out a proper response. Jay Smooth, breathe easy- I don't plan to ruin my lucrative blogger cred by making fun of rap journalism's top shotta again. Instead I'll be helpful and send Elliott some edits on his email. Just to be helpful.

The text is from Elliott, the red is mine:

Hashim,

On November 15th, Razor & Tie Entertainment (the company that brought you "Darren's Dance Grooves") will release the first-ever compilation from XXL, the No. 1 selling hip-hop magazine worldwide (by default).  XXL Raps Volume 1 will feature the best tracks (that no one else wanted to use) from today's most prominent MCs, including Eminem, 50 Cent, T.I., members of G-Unit and Terror Squad, and many more (who are not worthy to name).

I personally selected the songs, I sequenced the album, and I'm going on the virtual road to talk about it. (in other words, I didn't do anything creative but will certainly take credit for it).

I've said before, in many ways, that after eight years of hard work and sacrifice from my team of talented editors and writers (and friends, and wives of friends) XXL has unquestionably become the new voice of the hip-hop nation. This XXL Raps Volume 1 compilation is more than just an extension of our brand. (it's also kickback for mag coverage, because Harris Publications can't afford an award show like everyone else). It's a collection of music from this culture's most prolific and important artists (* that's a common misuse of the word "prolific", but who's counting?*)

So, let's discuss. I'm down for a live chat, email interview, or phone interview. In addition to XXL Raps Volume I, I'm happy to talk about music, journalism, the blogging phenomenon (which almost crushed my reputation), as well as the fact that XXL has an ABC Audited Circulation of 315,000, and we outsell Rolling Stone, Vibe, The Source and Spin on the newsstand (however, still trail SOHH.com with their million plus visitors worldwide).

Looking forward to the conversation. I'll be on the virtual road until the end of the November (* no one says "virtual" anymore, but who's counting? Ok, I am. You wrote virtual twice *). Hit me back at this email address.

Elliott "YN" Wilson (-Smith)
Editor-in-Chief, XXL (and vice president of marketing, Interscope Records)

Hopefully Elliott will take my suggestions and learn from this.

You know, I really enjoy XXL magazines...I really do...but I swear, they are really on Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit Records dicks! Every other magazine, you see someone from that faction...they'll never put someone that you actually would give a damn in seeing....Juvenile is on the current cover.....wtf?? His CD was supposed to come out months ago..

Oh yeah, and I'm not a hater..I mean, I kinda sorta like G-Unit, but c'mon ladies and gents, we all know that XXL keeps doing this shit..hell, even the readers write them letters about this EVERY month

Sincerely,

D-Nizzle

I think xxl is shooting themselves in the foot, they have the right circumstances to elevate beyond the highest circulation peak of the vibe and source magazines combined. Yet seem to only be interested in promoting "the jimmy iovine mess" which seems to be a reality show on the rise and then fall of the biggest marketing scam of hip hop music. Unfortunately they give us the taste of a good publication and then return to the telling us the same old boring 50cent story. I mean the man has a movie, two albums, a book and countless dvd's. How many more stories can there be??? This dude doesn't deserve to even be in this position much less deserves my 4 bucks, I read it for laughs at the end of the month when it finds it's way to the free or for $1 rack on the hood newstands. It was ingenious at first to plaster the Interscope roster of "Yes men and ignorant idiots", but Interscope has more talent that doesn't get shine than the so called talent that get's all the shine.

Posted by: Kayser9soze at November 10, 2005 7:32 AM

Hell the only way i would read that crap again is if i saw it in a barber shop and was waiting to get a cut....he is a child and he kisses ass way to much, he's not even a good writer at all...People still read the source over here in the UK but no-one really likes it much 'cause since Selwyn Sefu Hindes left the mag has gone steadily downhill....and as for Interscope lets be real honest they need some real MC talent on that roster....

Posted by: NoBias at November 10, 2005 7:55 AM

This is something I would have done. Good stuff. Keep up the good work Has. And don't be like these other SOHH Bloggers talking about Hi-Five.

Posted by: SOHH Irreverent at November 10, 2005 8:09 AM

This is just another example of how the money and power and NEW rules of the games in 2005 makes shit as lame as hell. Now interscope doing it but to have nuthin but gunit and aftermath on the cover is crazy, there are alot of artists (they sell also) that could be on there. Its almost to the point that xxl and interscope is starting to look like the source and benzino...Now i aint pointing but the similarities are shocking...

Posted by: DJ Sinister at November 10, 2005 9:35 AM

The only thing good that XXL has going is Eye Candy. XXL is under the Interscope umbrella. Every two months, G-Unit, Shady, Aftermath are on the cover.

Posted by: devil son at November 10, 2005 10:23 AM

Xxl put 50cent so much on the cover ja -rule sould be on there because 50cent singin like ja now xxl get money to ride interscope/shady/50cent dick xxl is bitch jus like 50 {LOL}

Posted by: wildboy at November 10, 2005 11:35 AM

Straight up though...I subscribe to XXL, but certainly not for the hundreds of pages of ads, nor the 50 Cent fan club that they head up. It's crapper material...cuz I don't have a lap top. Eye Candy's been only aight lately. But that fool YN, I'd like to slap him myself...he acts like he buried the Source himself. Benzino did that on his own..with some help from 50. You hit it right on when you said they #1 by default. They can't come with no new news...cuz by time the mag is published, SOHH and allhiphop have already covered it so it's yesterday's news. I'd recommend SOHH and allhiphop do more in depth stories on artists as the publications do, and completely take them chumps out the game. Hell..steal they format like they did Sources. Anyway, if you see YN around, thump dude right in the forehead for PZ. Him, his arrogance..and his mouth is really the main reason I won't resubscribe. I ain't puttin no more money in that fools pocket. Rather than praise the culture, he spends all his time praisin himself.

That's real.

Hashim,

Andrea Duncan was writing on hip-hop (in between working at MTV and managing Redman) long before her and Jefferson Mao got married. It's a bit wack to suggest that the only reason she gets to write for XXL is because she's married to Mao.

Posted by: Oliver at November 10, 2005 1:18 PM

I got the same letter, probably because I'm listed as the #10 ranked hip-hop blog on Technorati. Shit, the only reason I'm that high is because I have a decent amount of links stemming from my political and technology posts. I do write lyrics and am into hip-hop, but come on, this was an obvious marketing attempt to use bloggers. I wonder how deep down the Technorati "hip hop category" ranks he went to get his email list. You know, the long tail is pretty long in that category. They're wasting their time.

Oh, and thanks for the link to his "We Major" rant:

"You're beneath me. You wanna know why I ain't gotta answer niggas? 'Cause I truly understand these niggas-sneak dissin' haters who want to get put on. You just want my autograph on your copy of ego trip's Book of Rap Lists or, better yet, on a XXL contract. You'd be doing naked cartwheels if I ever gave you a byline. You don't stand for shit, so sit. Just wait for your moms to go to sleep so you can get back on that computer. I'm ready for a blogger geek burial. I'm Kool Herc to you jerks. Plus, I'm rich, pricks. And I kept my integrity. There's no one better than me."

This guy sends out his plea for us to cover his ass and at the same time pseudo raps in such a disparaging, bitch-ass way? C'mon now!

A LOT OF Y'ALL ON THE THAT BANDWAGON TALKIN' BOUT XXL BE DICK RIDING G-UNIT & INTERSCOPE. PEOPLE ARE SO SIMPLE. THE ONLY REASON ANYBODY SAYS THAT IS CUZ THE SOURCE DONT FUCK WITH EM. IF THE SOURCE PROMOTED INTERSCOPE, THAT XXL DICK RIDER STUFF WOULDN'T EVEN BE A TOPIC OF CONVERSATION

Posted by: BEASTIALITY at November 10, 2005 5:01 PM

XXL tight, but Murderdog is the real mag.

Posted by: HighLife at November 10, 2005 8:02 PM

NO BEASTIALITY TRUTH IS TRUTH. INTERSCOPE PAYS TO GET ON THE COVER OF XXL BECAUSE ELLIOTT WILSON IS A DICK-RIDER AND HE WANTED NOTHHING MORE THAN TO SEE THE SOURCE GO DOWN ANYWAY. THATS WHY 50 AND THEM ON THE COVER SO MUCH. SO IT'S NOT HATING WHEN IT'S TRUE, IT'S REAL TALK.

Posted by: MALIKII at November 11, 2005 9:02 AM

i gotta give murderdog its respect as a known hip hop mag but cmon, in every issue we lucky if we see 1 recognizable rapper in that bitch. and let's be real, niggas wanna read about the juicy shit, the beefs, the niggas that's on TV. i aint sayin just cuz you on TV you a good rapper, but nobody wanna hear from the niggas in bumblefuck Texas, ATL, or Tennessee, or Oklahoma.

Posted by: truth at November 11, 2005 10:31 AM

and why the fuck would you wanna be known as "yellow nigga." just say u light skinned and call it a day.

Posted by: truth at November 11, 2005 10:32 AM

MALIKII-

ANYBODY WITH CASH IS GONNA PAY FOR EXPOSURE IF THEY CAN AFFORD IT. SO WHAT IF INTERSCOPE PAYS FOR ARTISTS TO BE ON THE COVER OF XXL!

HOT 97 TAKE MONEY FROM LABELS TO PLAY SONGS! I REMEMBER A WHILE AGO, DEF JAM AND OTHER LABELS WHERE BUYING UP THEIR ARTISTS ALBUMS FROM RECORD STORES JUST TO PUSH THEIR SALES OVER THE TOP.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT STUFF LIKE THAT, THAT INTERSCOPE STUFF DON'T REALLY MATTER. 50 CENT WILL SELL MILLIONS OF ALBUMS WITH OR WITHOUT XXL HELP ANYWAY!

Posted by: BEASTIALITY at November 11, 2005 2:48 PM

Yeah.....

What he said!!!

Posted by: Curtis"Interscope"Jackson at November 11, 2005 3:20 PM

I hate when niggas be sayin "XXL is on Interscopes dick..." listen up. INTERSCOPE IS ON TOP RIGHT NOW. Aftermath, like it or not, is the most successful record company at the moment. Who cares if u dont like them or if they aint real. It is what it is. They sell records. So why the fuck shouldnt XXL put them on every cover? Why put Jay Z and his roster on the cover when Jay Z only grants interviews every 6 years!! O heres an idea! Lets put Memphis Bleek on the cover! o wait...hes garbage...how about Slim Thug!!?? He's good! O wait...he didn't even go gold. Trust me, if any of u morons had a magazine, you would be trying to put the top sellers on your covers month after month too.

Posted by: Sam Cook at November 14, 2005 8:11 AM

Amp just made all of Southerners look stupid with his ridiculous comments. I'm from the South and I don't endorse this clown at all. Not all of us are ignorant like this fool. I do acknowledge the fact that we have some garbage MCs down here but then again they come from all regions now. I've been all over the country and I bet this clown would never set foot in NYC nor would he be talking that sh$t. He probably has never been on the other side of his own city much less NY.

Posted by: BLACK at November 14, 2005 1:15 PM

it sucks that the Source had to file for Bankruptcy or whatever happened with their Financial situation, but hey, I guess when you have someone like Benzino's wack self on there, beefing' forever with Em, you stand to lose alot of money. I mean, I just don't know how Benzino thinks he's a millionaire. I mean, yeah, the Source is pretty much over, but damn, his albums, and he's got about 50 out, never go past plastic. I mean, come on, bro, give it up

Posted by: Mas at November 14, 2005 10:13 PM

all I know is texas got some fine ass thick women, most of them NY Bitties look gully as hell, probably got AIDS and whatever. I would rather get me one of them country girls, becuase they treat you better and they know how to cook

Posted by: NastyNateq at November 14, 2005 10:20 PM

Sam Cook I feel you! Rap mags suck so much today. I'm not in the states and I used to buy a rap mag every now and again at whatever you pay in the states times 7. But now, i'd rather get beer. lol
Elliot Wilson....what a fool!

Posted by: str8frmjozi at November 15, 2005 6:45 AM

You think that maybe if Slim Thugga...or some other cats was gettin them cover pages...you think maybe they might push some more units?

You think the bombardment of articles..and covers, and GUnit this..and GUnit that which takes place in the XXL..you think that ain't partially responsible for some of them numbers that GUnit does?

You think GUnit sales cuz the streets think it's hot? No..it sales because that is the only hip hop branch being forced down everyone's throats. If they would put more exposure on some up and comin artists....something might start a fire under a new breed..or a new somebody other than this mark.

So there needs to be balance. One has everything to do with the other. They hot right now because they all over the place, but they all over the place cuz they hot right now. I believe that is what "The Source" is "trying" to say..but it's too late for them to be taken serious.

Hip Hop is bigger than 50 Cent and G-Unit, PERIOD. Any hip hop head knows and appreciates that as fact..and sees what is really goin on.

The artist with the biggest fan base, sells the most mags...DUH ??? The real stories are on the inside, so fuck the cover !!! These blogs are stopping to be real picky and bitchy....

Posted by: Young Guice at November 23, 2005 9:24 PM

Usually, I read these blogs, get a good laugh(for the most part) or learn something new(rarely). Today, I got the best of both worlds. Amp, you provided a helluva laugh, Mainman, with your assumption of all us "East Coast" cats. The good thing is, you're not an idiot. YOU A NEW FUKKIN FOOL! Fukks like you wouldn't last 5 minutes anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line, you hay-bailing, aunt-banging, still-pissing-in-slop-jars, Cough-syrup-for-cheap-thrills ass motherfukka! Jordans? Air Max?? Man, do you even know that this is 2005? We wore that shit back in the early 90s. Step your shoe game up, Cletus. That being said: when I first copped XXL, I was feeling it. It offered an alternative to the Source(which has been in a constant state of decline for the past 4 years, at least) and it was a hot magazine. The one thing that always pissed me off and influenced my decision to never subscribe to it was that first page. With the dumb ass yellow cat ranting and raving and bigging himself up. It was funny at first, but then it got jive annoying. I personally don't have a problem with 50 or anybody in G-Unit, but I'll be dammed if they are the only group in hip hop that's newsworthy, so don't think it's hatred. I really don't see how a magazine could keep someone that relevant for so long. If that's the case, I may as well go back to the Source where they have at least 3 ads for Benzino's wack ass album or group.

PZ..You made some very valid points, Brother. Aftermath/Shady/G-Unit is being forced down consumers' throats. I for one ain't buying, though.

NastyNateq....Them NY bitties look gully? Bitties??? I'mma ask u like I asked that clown, Amp, U do know that this is 2005, right? Nobody says bitties, anymore, Dude. I know some women from the South that can't boil water and I also know some Sistas from the Coast that should own their own restaurants, so dead that argument about cooking. Besides, be a fukkin man and learn how to cook for yourself. Also, women in one area are no different than ones in other areas. Texas women will fukk over dudes just as quick as a woman from NY, North Dakota, Cali, or Florida will. STEP YO SHIT UP, MAINMAN.
