It must be a slow news day at the Evil Empire.
Think MTV (the special portion of their website where they hide all the conscious news) did a story on a Catholic school principal banning his students from blogging.
Short story- the Catholic principal wants to protect the students from online predators, so he’s demanding that none of them maintain a blog, where they have the habit of revealing too much info about themselves- a lure to pedophiles. The principal probably got frustrated trying to stop these kids from having sex which each other, so figures he should at least stop them from having sex with random adults.
My guess is Think MTV wants us to get hyped about this situation, and read up on our First Amendment right to free speech during Real World Austin commercials.
Well, I already did suckas, and I see that private school students are not protected by the federal rules of free speech. And even it was a public school, the courts often give administrators leeway to break the rules in order to protect students, just as this one is doing.
That little fact, which is buried at the end of the article, makes this a non-story. However, the writer, Gil Kaufman was careful to include enough buzzwords in the title (blogs! MySpace!) to at least get an uproar at LiveJournal going.

How does "that little fact" (which isn't one, the Amendments don't go into the detail you're describing) make this a non story? Whether or not you think it's a decent story, MTV has a long history of reporting on free speech rights in schools. Rights that have generally been taken away or abused.
Such abuse has continued as kids communication goes online and it's one of those things a lot of folks foolishly accept as nothing to get excited about.
It's actually an excellent example of how folks in power will take rights away for the supposed good of the individuals involved.
shut up clyde this story wack
Clyde, my point is that no rights are being broken. Yet, just as I predicted, this story is making the rounds in blogville and people are in an uproar.
Over nothing.

MTV is not whack. MTV is a business that realizes that the best way to stay in business and makes lots of money is to attract as broad an audience in the youth market as possible. Solution? Make boring, thoughtless, and redone music that is catchy and mainstream. Mix in a little underground or alternative every now and then to establish some legitimacy, and start cashing the checks. The people who are whack are the consumers who eat up, change them and MTV will change.
