MTV's Hustle and Flow

Hustle and Flow, the latest flick produced by MTV is a good movie. Let's get that out of the way first.
As a follow up, I would like to see MTV Productions make another movie about pimps and hustlers- this time starring themselves.
For all those mad at The Source for prominently featuring Benzino ads, and giving props to his music in their awards and compilations, please turn your eyes to MTV's self promoting schemes. Last year MTV produced "Napolean Dynamite", then shamelessly awarded their own studio with best movie of the year, over critically acclaimed films like Ray and The Aviator.
Now, to promote the Memphis based Hustle and Flow, MTV news did a special on that city's hip-hop scene, calling it the next spot to blow. Much respect to Three 6 Mafia and 8ball & MJG, but yeeeeeah right.
So this is what Sway left Hot 97 to focus on- infomercials for MTV's movie division? I can't blame him though- I'd rather be on TV teaching pre-teen White girls how to "Gangsta Walk" rather than be anywhere near the hurricane that has been Hot 97 this year.
So, props to Mr. Calloway and also Shaheim Reid, who has the enviable ability to super-hype any trend, no matter how much of a passing fad it may be.
Now, guess who will win best film at next year's MTV Movie Awards. You heard it hear first!

What was up with Hustle & Flow's limited distribution, I didn't see any media coverage of this but the distribution was suspect in my area. They played it in a second tier theatre with only three shows per day (during the weekend!) and of course all of those were sold out. I bet if this were the standard minstrel fare and didn't actually have a plot the movie would have had a much wider release.

It sounds like HASHIM is hating on the memphis rap game which damn near took atl 2 the next level..... If it weren't for a lot of that old 36 mafia, skinny pimp, 8ball,mjg,al kapone hits from the early 2 mid 90s, atl niggas would still be rapping about booty shaking, and breakdancing... Memphis style rap has always been that crunk gangsta shit and that's what the movie reflected and showed how niggas act when they so called "make it" which was real. Overall the movie was hot and memphis WILL be the next captital of the south.........DIGGA//////PABLO

Cmon Digg. I'm not hating on Memphis. I want to see them get flow. But MTV is trying to knock us over the head with dummy sticks. I'm not down with that

I thought Hustle & Flow was an excellent film. I don't think it mattered what city or state the story had taken place in(no disrespect to Memphis) it was the fact that it showed the development of the characters. It's not only about a pimp wanting to change his ways, but how his growth affected those around him. And it was done in a way that allowed the audience to relate to the main character's struggle. On the flip side for it to be in the top 10 grossing films it's first week out and not made available to a lot of theaters that was a great showing. I think Terrence Howard is one hell of an actor and they are already talking an Academy Award nomination for him. And Luda looks like he is slowly positioning himself to be have another lucrative career.

MTV always pimps its movies. This one just so happens to be about hip hop. "Mean Girls" was an MTV movie and they pimped that to death. Lindsey Lohan had (past tense) some big titties, but what had she really done? And she was the one hosting the MTV awards? (With said titties bouncing. Good look MTV) THey always pull this kind of stuff. MTV is garbage and that's not really a secret. If it takes them promting Memphis like that, fine. It's better than a million other things they could be doing, even if it's corny.

I have never been to Memphis but according to "Hustle&Flow" it has to be the most country city in the U.S.A.

Hustle & Flow is a really good movie. I hope it does not take a shoot out to make it in the music business. With 50, The Game, and this movie setting the standard you are going to have to get shot or shoot someone to get on.
