We do have some cats such as KRS-One who are still in the game. Now, I don't know how you may define "relevant" but KRS has been making waves. If you want a Rolling Stones, that's going to be tough primarily because rap music hasn't even been around as long as they have! (bad joke). While the Stones made a great splash when they went back on tour, I think that Eminem or Jay-Z could do the same in ten or fifteen years. The question is, who will be the next to step up and fill the void? I have my dips on a couple of emcees but you can get at those on TheOG.net

Yes, Em retiring is disheartening. But not all of this "retiring" talk is the same. Jay-Z has said he would retire after every album since "Reasonable Doubt". If I were to guess his logic, I think he gets nervous about the response to the album and how much he paid for Neptunes production before the release, then renews his vigor when the sales hit the break even point. But Em's retirement is different. Slim Shady is alter ego, a personality schtick he used to vent some personal issues that turned into a career. To move on with his life, he needs to leave the alter ego behind. So it is perfectly understandable why he wants to hang it up.
From my opinion, the ones that stay are the ones that are truely real to hip-hop. The Greatful Dead had one #1 hit in 20 years and toured forever. De La Soul, Mos Def, Common will all be able to say the same things 20 years from now and no one would call them selling out. But if 50 was talking about "In da club" even 10 years from now we would say "Aren't you a little old for that crap?" LL talks to the ladies. That is timeless. So continuity is found where rappers believe that their word is their bond, on the stage and off.

I disagree. I'm cool with seeing hip hoppers retire in their 30's I think hip hop is an art form best represented by the youth. My worry is seeing an artist (like Jay-Z) grab hold of the game and use his power and influence to control music (in the age of payola thats not too hard to imagine). I think cats need to serve their term and make way for new acts to keep the game moving and hip hop relevent. Thats not to say they need to "go into retirement" just back off a bit from the limelight. Great artists will have a permanent place in history (I'm still bumpin Paid in Full).
On the flipside the artist that continues to redefine his or herself as Common, Ghostface, and even Masta Ace have done, can hold out on the retirement party until they cease to find ways to innovate.

I still dont believe it. I saw him last night performing, and he brought up how its in the tabloids but he never confirmed it. He didnt deny it either but he was making light of it you could tell. Until he says so, im callin this a bluff. And did you ever think that maybe its just eminem the rapper retiring. Maybe now well get to see Marshall Mathers as an artist not just a rapper. Thats what im hopeful for.

I've been an Eminem fan since I first heard his show stealing verse on Shabaam Sahdeeq's "5 star generals" not even knowing he was a white boy, and I'm not at all bothered by the thought of him retiring from making albums cuz every one has been progressively worse since the Slim Shady LP. I mean Encore (aka Eminem Show Disc 2) had tight beats, but his subject matter is so god damn stale it drives me nuts, I could give a crap about Kim and the kids and the gossip about every other celebrity. I didn't like it on Eminem Show, 8 mile was beating a dead horse, but at least it was a well made movie, but on Encore I'm just sick of it, that cd was out of my rotation in a week, he's just not very funny anymore. Em is a smart guy and I think even he knows that the persona is getting old, I'd be glad to see him take on a dr. dre style role and concentrate on makin stat quo and d12 solo albums and what not. Then he can make an album like the Chronic or 2001 in like 5 years or so when he actually has something new to say. I still think hes the man and I'm goin to see anger management next week but I'm glad to see him retire without tarnishing his legacy. Oh yeah...and can I get a Young Zee album some time this decade....please?!!?!?
Posted by: styles at July 19, 2005 8:34 AM
Well, we had those rappers, and look what we said about them:
Master P has new songs out...who buys them? NOBODY!!
Will Smith has new songs out....who buys them? NOBODY!!
It's like we think they can't still be doing the same things: running aroung gettting hoes, buying up diamonds, and things when they have a wife and family at home. Retirement is what fits. And I don't blame these artists for retiring.
Posted by: Macchiato313 at July 19, 2005 9:11 AM
First off, make one thing clear, whether someone likes Jay-z or not, it is rather illogical to knock anyone who has done what he's done for so long. Jay-z has completed the ever elusive task of staying in the public eye of both the streets and the popular world for almost ten years. With that said, although it certainly leaves a void to have these artists discontinue album making, it is a positive thing. Both of the artists in consideration have left enough work for fans to be entertained by for at least another decade(And this comes from someone who dislikes Em, but same logic applies when one considers his impact on rap). They deserve to hear their swan song and gracefully bow out. If it was up to me, Ny and Detroit would have parades for each one.
All things considered, these artists aren't even abandoning rap due to the dreadful age of 30. They are expanding their horizons and affecting our music and cultures through others ways. It's wonderful that these artists are taking positions of power and grooming other artists to make quality music as they have.

Y is it that yall believe what this world tells you .. 30 is not middle age !!! 30 is a number ... not the end of life ... Turning 30 is no different from turning 40-50-60 or what ever. Even if Em is 30 that has nothing with him wanting to retire. Yall get 2 hung up on someone being 30 and you miss the talent being given by real entertainers. Very few of yall know that ya favorite rappers out today are over 30 sept 4 like chingy, lil wayne, webbie, bow wow .. ya know .
((((("I read that this is a rumer Em said."))))
He's not going to retire he is just not working on an album for a while 2 concentrate on producing. .....
Posted by: PRESTO at July 19, 2005 11:36 AM
Anyone that heard Encore can say that Em fell off. Compare that shit to Infinite or The Slim Shady LP.. It's garbage... It's good that he is retiring because real hip hop heads are losing respect. He just needs to lay off the boards too 'cause all his beats sound the same, and I'm tired of his style.
Posted by: SJizzay at July 19, 2005 11:39 AM
Yall best believe what these cats gat to say bout Em coz I believe the man made an impact in this industry whether y'all like it or not. Sometimes you don havta' live with what people expect of ya! you only need to do whats best of you and whatever your heart tells you to. I believe Em's moving to that direxn for some good reasons. After being groomed by Dre, he's been taught by the worlds best to make them beats and y'all better agree to that. So if the mans ok with retiring, let him have it, then when he ain't gone give y'all something to vibe with, you may as well be on that niggas ass, feel me???
To all y'all haters who think Em ain't worth shit, y'all gatto know the difference betwen Em and all them fake ass mc's and like he said, "so whats the difference between us, we can start at the penis, we can scream I don give a fuck and see who really means it!!!!"

Jadakiss said it best in last months XXL mag, He says he doesnt care what anyone says No artist nowadays gets in the game to make music and thats it. Several MCs have said you can barely eat from the money you get from making music. For Regular Shmoes like me Im sure I can survive wit the money from music. But as you make more and more money from music, your cost of living goes up, they have to support their lavish life styles. For the typical MC their is a limit to how much money you can make from any particular album. 50 cent will never do 11 million again, hes worth 60 million right now. So I'll almost bet my life that he'll never make that much money all at the same time again. But dude has Tyson's old mansion, so now he has to constantly be able to pay for those bills. Of course hes going to move on to something else, to make that money. Maybe sign a sneaker deal, or get into a couple of movies, or maybe owning some real estate or thing, its only natural. But no one ever really retires, they just stop making so many albums. Jay-Z was putting out almost 2 albums a year. He says hes not going to make another album, yea thats some bull, but I dont expect him to put out 2 albums a year or even an album every year. Every other year, I can see him doing that. In a sense he is retired, but not really. I bet Jordan still plays ball, he just retired from playing 82 games every year.

It unfortunate that Eminem is retiring considering that even with all the scandals that were surrounding him, he was really just an artist that documented his growth from immaturity to maturity. Maturity, for the sake of keeping us alive and away from frivolous foolishness that could kill us, is redundant at times.
Eminem grew with us and maxxed out his steez and that's what growing up is about. You can still be a cool old or older dude that younger cats still appreciate for your uniqueness without running the young-looking older dude act into the asphalt. Eminem maintained his integrity to be an a**hole throughout his career and wound it up like the first gear in a stick-shift.
Eminem could always come back later like a few of you cats mentioned and maybe it is best that he rethink his role in rap as well as the role of any rapper over 30 who feels the need to project their thoughts on life from a living perspective versus the reckless view of life rampant in hip hop as of late. Music that is really good music is timeless and will always sound great whenever in the future.
Music that doesn't sound good years from now like it did when you used to break your neck off the boogie when it came out, was never really anything substantial anyway if it couldn't stand the test of time. If the music is only relevant to the youth that crave to cultivate no understanding then that music for all intents and purposes is suicidal lest it inspires one to appreciate the day after tomorrow and the day after that.
Maybe Eminem IS right to retire and his music WAS one-dimensionally enjoyable and NOT good for anyone with rational thinking skills above the level of a maturing adolescent or young adult. If so the money spent on Eminem and his music was a waste and that goes for every artist pumping bubble-gum rap and penny-candy pop for the young fun-dummy minds thinking everything is all sweet.
When we get older we'll be itemizing during tax return season saving all of our receipts and we'll be the Black Sheeps are oddballs in the face of the youth living in the shadow of James Dean, smoking cigarettes like a freight train, chain smoking. Our favorite quote like Black Sheep (another timeless Hip Hop duo) said, will be, can we have a receipt.
There is a saying that Youth is wasted on the Young. Well we don't know how true that is, but were quite sure that youth is an invigorating gift that gives and rewards of itself by virtue of what it is so it's probably not wasted most of the time. Point to saying that though is that Hip Hop or Rap artists are better off in the long run as rap artists when they speak of how the young consumers can survive their youth rather than go out in a blaze of glory.
There's nothing so viciously wrong with retiring early, but it almost justifies those naysayers from rap's early days that kept constantly saying that rap was a fad that was soon to dilute itself out of existence or burn itself out from overkill. Whatever's clever is the motto of most nowadays who lack any kind of consistency.
It's enough to cause us to frustratedly take a few steps back and let rap grow up own its own, yet when we say that we really mean let it continue as it may without any guidance. That's not Hip Hop and that's not ours, that's when rap chooses to be a prodigal bastard. May it return home one day to willingly serve and not tokenly so.
Peace be unto you all. We all need some Peace. PEACE.

Eminem's retiring cuz he has nothing to say. When you come to the point where you're making an entire song as a puppet, it's time to shut off the mic, dig up a hole, throw yourself in it, then shoot yourself. The guy makes fun of pop artists, then makes a song as a puppet. Flaming homosexual.

Slim then noted that the article next to the retirement story was a piece about the moon "to blow up today." He then added, "I'm retiring? then I guess the moon just blew up" before mooning the crowd. Em added that if he ever retired and decided to come back his new stage name would be "Rain Man."

I'll say that all of these comments have some "truth" to them. I will always love Em, but I totally have seen a major change since the Slim Shady LP. I think maybe alot of it has to do with his personal life too. He's been through some shit. He has had to grow up and be a more responsible parent and shit cuz we all know from what we have seen Kim hasn't done it. Age, I don't think has anything to do with it. Whether a rapper is 24 or 40 should have nothing to do with it if you have TALENT!

Look at it from Em's perspective or Jay's. Why would they wanna keep bustin there ass touring and making albums until there 60? They guys have made a fortune and now just wanna chill and live the good life. I think anyone in there position would do the same thing. The goal of every working stiff in this country is to one day be able to retire, and the sooner the better. If you were between the ages of 25-35 and you had amassed a fortune of around $100 to $360 million would you bust your ass night after night on a 33 city tour, and doing press in between and surviving on 2 hour of sleep? OR would you be relaxing on various tropical islands drinking Crystal and possibly pick up a bentley and two ferraris in the late afternoon?
Think about it.
Posted by: Chris J at July 20, 2005 6:07 PM
Wow! So what are you saying?? That they just got in the rap thing for the money?? I highly doubt that. THEY CHOSE THEIR CAREER just like we all have. Anyone that gets in the music industry or hollywood knows what goes along with it. You build a fan base, make money off them.....yes, they do "entertain" you but after all that is their job just like the rest of us have a job! I'm sure I would retire eventually but NOT totally quit and disrespect my fans at the same time, obviously by your comment that's exactly what you would do...like alot of the new "rap artists". Em deserves more respect than he has been given in alot of these posts. I understand what you are saying but at the same time I agree to disagree! LoL
Posted by: breninem at July 21, 2005 1:34 AM
No, I didn't mean to make it sound like they just got in it for the money. Of course they couldn't leave music alone if they wanted to, its in there fuckin blood. Neither Em or Jay said they were retiring from music, just from making albums. Em is gonna produce and I am sure he will have guest spots on numerous albums. As for Jay he is running Def Jam, and damn near shows up on a song almost every week. But just because someone is famous and has fans doesn't mean that they have to keep performing. Em is real young and even if he retires for a few, I would bet he will drop another album in the future. Same may be for Jay, but dude has been entertaining us for 10 years and has put out about 11 or 12 albums. If he wants to retire I think he has earned it.

He has had half a dozen really good songs, and the rest were ok, with a good percentage just lame. He has a high pitched, nasaly "white" voice that, and I don't if I'm alone on this, has always gotten on my nerves, even when listening to his best songs. and now that he's become 50 and the rest of G-Unit's post-prison bit*h or "Toy Soldier" I think it is only right that he retires. His flow has even become wack lately. Whispering his verses on somebody elses song.
He's played and he knows it. He was the one who said something about "the fire dies and expires at 30"
Anyway, Ya Know--you need to check "Hollaback Girl" post, because I have a bone to pick with you. It's the last post.
One love to all my fam, and snap tha rubberbands.

Eminem retiring?
If we could be so lucky.
That sellout will milk the game for everything it`s worth. With the aim of turning hip hop into a dated stereotype like say disco. But as Jada said in his diss to eminem`s spawn(shiddy cent) this is probably the best thing that happened to rap. eventually someone fresh will bring some creativity and new found artistic merit to the genre. Like the way Krs used to do. Listening to Krs(still number 1, for example is a great example of industry foreshadowing) and other credible old school rappers predicting this stuff is a good tool for any aspiring rap artist or someone that just likes intricate lyrics. People in this new millenium thought that rap could be saved by new sounds alone...pharell,eminem`s almost rap beats, puffdaddy`s incessant sampling of white artists that stole from black artists, crunk or whatever the hell it`s called and other such rap fads. but yo the beats is not always exactly what makes hip hop. Rahzel singing and beatboxing at the same time is the most basic of beats but no one can discount it`s ability to captivate and 20 years down the line people will look at that as classic. what rap needs is lyrical crativity and real subject matter. You`ve heard this before supposedly? i mean changing it the way tarantino changed what mainstream culture expected of action movies. People was getting tired of sly arnold mel bruce and even eddy doing the same let`s blow some motherfuckers up or oh shit there`s a guy inside the department that`s been setting us up or you won`t get away with this.... crap. Anyways just a thought. Eminem`s flow never improved after his first album. In fact with the exemption of a few songs the album is almost unlistenable to now. How often to em fans listen to my name is? While u can put in illmatic, reasonable doubt and of course ready to die and appreciate the quality and with each listen a bigger appreciation.it`s amazing the lower standards people have of things just bcoz of what a person looks like...but like pac said it`s just the way it is.
peace

Eminem retiring is the gift and the curse for myself. The gift being that "Encore" proves that m. mathers has not grown content wise. His lyricism is top notch as usual and he has improved in terms of flow and rhyming, but other than"We As Americans" was the only song where he made a concious point. The rest of the album was 10 year old music and Im one of the guys biggest fans. Peddling that G-Unit garb doesn't help his image either. The curse is hip hop needs average or better mcs rite now. The game(not him) is weak right now. Too many watered down, formulaic mc's talking about the same old(spinning rims, my .44,9, uzi, gun big as bow wow, lil fate, or my ice, cribs, and cars is totally played out. Eminem has never reverted to that formula and he is what the game needs. That is why I love Nas latest release,"Street's Disciple". This cd is the true "Blueprint" (Nasir, take a bow)

I also agree we shud av our own rollingstones in th game.Dont this turn-30 retirement is good for the game, but at the same time it's kinda gud cos we sometimes need some nu sounds.

Tell you the truth I don't think Em is retiring I think he is just taking a rest until all the beef between G-Unit, D-Block, Terror Squad and Game calm down because unlike 50 Cent Em is cool with different people in the industry he made the "Lean Back (Remix)"with Fat Joe and "Welcome 2 D-Block" with Jadakiss I don't think Em is really feeling to back up 50 on this because Em probably relieve that 50 and G-Unit got into some real street beef and he is about to be real deep in it so he gonna sit back, make money off these beats, and watch the end results of everything plus Jay-Z and DMX said they was retiring and Jay-Z still doing mixtapes and collabos and DMX coming out with another album soon but the world will know soon
P.S
If anybody looking for some unsigned hype who can really spit and write lyrics hit me up for real

ECM_Problemz, you comment. EM has talent and he's the sort of guy who can work with anyone but people just diss him alot of the time because he is white, whether your white or black it shouldnt matter, its all about the music but its also about the person you are... EM deserves some massive recognition, and i reckon his work with afeni in the making of loyal to the game (2pac) was pretty good to. so if he was to retire, he is leaving on a good note...

dausualsuspect < shut the fuck up if you dont know what your talking about...
Posted by: 7daytheory at July 23, 2005 1:42 AM
i been in the industry for about a year now.. and since i've been in i seen some of the talent that already made it, em.. to me when he first came out his album was just raw to me,it was a new feel,i meen when he came out you had DMX bringin the streets to your door, then em came out with this kamakazi, suicidle, sick flow, and created his own type of fans, shady fans are diffrent mother fuckers, i'll tell ya that, but anyways, the marshal mathers lp, came next, that was hard too, but every thing after that sucked, like his new one is fuckin garbage, some good tracks, but ultimatly garbage, just like 50's new shit garbage,so if em's gonna retire now would be the time to do it, we all know he's fallin off, but no one said it yet
Posted by: JohnGrhymes at July 23, 2005 2:34 AM
life is so
no point debating shit u no shit about
even if my mama bust me wit a joint in my hand
i'd deny it
so while she hasn't
theres no point denying it
capish?
long live em

7day theory I am sorry if i offended you. write eminem and see if he gives a fuck what you say in hip hop bloggs about him and when you realize that he doesn`t care, pull a stan and disappear.
Posted by: dausualsuspect at July 23, 2005 11:43 PM
So, does that mean Eminem can come out and play more often?
Posted by: Knowledge at July 25, 2005 3:59 PM
What the hell? Scarface retired.......he was one of the greats. The only good rapper from the south!
Posted by: Nasir Jones at July 27, 2005 12:27 PM
If you're gonna throw a fit about something, check your facts...
"It's a new trend in rap- turn 30, then retire."
"C'mon fellas! I want to see a rapper stay relevent past age 35. Then I'll call them the G.O.A.T., word to LL. "
Shock G is in his 40s and just dropped a whole new solo album as well as dropping vocals on a few songs that are HUGE overseas... He's been rocking hip hop for over 20 years.
Posted by: DU Fan at August 11, 2005 3:54 AM
what ever reason eminem gives for retiring,is the right reason,..so stop riffin on about why,how who and what...i mean c'mon he's been doin it for years, nobody is perfect, just coz he quit or retire dont mean he fell off at all...its in impossible to impress and please every single fan, even when the slim shady lp came out..that women on the "bitch" skit sayin somethin like eminem is the most sickest thing she ever heard and is totally disgusting...but he still went on to make marshall mathers lp,and sold millions....musicly eminem has done his part FULL STOP...he does not have to answer to any1 on any other topac, subject or any other rapper,...you all think to much, like he has to watch what hes says,to not get a bad response..C'MON this is eminem," just dont give a fuck""still dont give a fuck"

it's good to let other emcees attempt to climb the ladder
grab the mic and spit what they got
but eminem has still set a bench mark
that is not as easy to reach as some may think let alone overtake. Rappers can be gone but sure as hell never forgotten an artists just gotta keep up with an ever changing industry. But as long as there are teenie boppers and wannabees rap music can never die and for that we can thank the artists like eminem.

I agree with you the way you view the issue. I remember Jack London once said everything positive has a negative side; everything negative has positive side. It is also interesting to see different viewpoints & learn useful things in the discussion.
