XXL's Jail Issue

xxx-jail-issue.jpg
The latest issue of XXL profiles rappers in prison. This unique idea for a feature should not be confused with The Source’s jail issue last year, or the Hip-hop Stars and Bars article that appeared in several newspapers months ago, or the convict interviews that Don Diva, FEDS, and FELON do in every issue. Eliottt Wilson and crew tackled it from a much different angle- THEY HAVE 50 CENT ON THE COVER!! (And oh yeah, Tony Yayo).

Also, in a twist of irony I’m sure was intentional, they devote almost a whole page to rappers in college. (Should I mention that Chris Rock joke about getting more props for being in jail than being in college? Wait, I just did.)

Eliotttt, the head of marketing for Interscope the Editor in Chief of XXL does get his mojo back for the editorial this month (careful readers of Media Chin-Check remember that I questioned if Eliottttt was going soft last issue).

In an underdog to top dog switch, Eliottttttt doesn’t bother spitting venom at The Source like I hoped, but turns on his latest rival…hip-hop bloggers! He writes:

Seriously, when it came time to decide on our cover, instead of slapping on another picture of Shyne and running our historic interview for the third time, we hit up Tony Yayo. That’s right, Tony Yayo from G-Unit Records. Tony Yayo who’s also signed to Jimmy Iovine’s label. And who’s that by his side, 50 Cent? Curtis “Interscope” Jackson! Oh, you bloggers are gonna dislocate your fingers typin’ so hard when you peep this issue—front and back. We got the Internet goin’ nuts like Paul Wall. Pray for my downfall. I feel sorry for all y’all mothers. YN is here to move units, kids. Hate it or love it, my certified ABC numbers don’t lie.

Too bad only 12 people understand just what the hell dude is talking about. He spits some subliminals directly at me later on that even I barely caught. I won’t guess at why the bullseye has been taken off The Source, but if the rumors are true, then it may have something to do with how Paul got Pierced.

Eliotttttttt probably doesn’t realize it, but SOHH was also co-founded by a dangerous rapper, just like that rival magazine he won’t mention anymore. I’ve been to the SOHH office, and even though I didn’t see guns in anyone’s face or female editors being harrassed, I’m sure they could create a script that will crash the XXLmag.com web server. So watch your mouth.

In the editorial Eliottttttttttttt also reveals some personal things about himself, like

  1. he loves his fiancé very much

  2. he doesn’t sign petitions

  3. his first name “Eliottttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt” is spelled with more than one “t”

  4. he loves his fiancé very, very, very much (more than Tom Cruise loves Katie Holmes it seems)

Good for him. I can't wait for the next issue.

this has already been done. Going to prison or jail does not make you gangsta. 50 never went to actual prison, he went to boot camp for 7 months, because he was a first time felon and a young 19 yr old kid. Marvin Benard, aka Tony Yayo was in Manhattan Detention Center and the center had 24 hr protective custody. He just had some warrants for carrying an unregistered firearm. I do not know why the black media honors people that go to prison of jail or bootcamp. Prison is supposed to be rehabilitation and for the most violent, to keep them from harming citizens. There is nothing cool being a convicted felon, when you get out on full release or parole, society treats you even worse than before you went, society is already going to treat you wrong because
1. you're BLACK
2. you're a BLACK CONVICTED FELON.
So all I have to say about Elliot, no hatred, if you want to trick yourself out to interscope cool, but don't come with this putting others down and shit.

PEACE

The article escaped our attention, but it sounds like people interviewed were allowed to be incredibly frank. It seems that some revealed their hopes for a comeback upon release and it seems that more than a few people were actually enlightened to the fact that jail credentials don't make for good comeback albums. At least not when 10 or more years of isolation from current events of the streets separates the hardcore 10 year jerking-off champ from the rap-consuming law abiding cat that buys 4 CDs a month and for every piece of punani he attempts to entertain, he spends a year per punani trying to get the drawers to come down. Yo, that one piece of punani a year sounds drastically better than no punani for 10 years, whew, forget about being hardcore, we'd rather be without street or jail credentials and hit the softcore punani on an annual basis or sooner but not later. Jail time means your a jerking-off champ or a champion at jerking off. If jerking off on a constant basis makes one hardcore, then why buy studio gangsters' albums?

If 50 is so untouchable, then why hasn't he even sold half as many copies of the Massacre as Get Rich Or Die Tryin? Ya know, "Fif" ain't runnin New York, even he admitted that. And why do people keep talkin like "keep hatin, its good for business" and shit like that? I don't have any idea where that idea came from, but hopefully, its the last one coming from there. The more people there are who hate him, the less records he sells. The saddest thing is that at this point, I have more respect for Nelly than I do for 50, because they essentially make the same music for the same audience, except that Nelly really doesn't act like he's something that he's not, he knows he's not a thug, so all he does is dress like it. "Fif" on the other hand, dresses, acts, talks, and looks like she's a thug, but I don't think he realizes how fake he is, someone should drop him a line.

Posted by: Dj Nahlege at June 6, 2005 7:26 PM

50 is guilty of making garbage music, true, but like most everyone else he is still capable of changing his garbage status if he really experienced the hardships he so claims. We've just established that dude is intelligent enough to disregard our opinions so we might logically be able to infer that just as he can ignore the majority of our opinions of him, he is also able to distinguish between people that currently support on his albums and the people who are disappointed with the direction of those albums and who are going to support Styles P and the like for releasing substantial songs like "I'm Black".

When 50 hears people opt to not openly show disdain for his music, he is able to rest assure that his worst will surf, yet to express disappointment with the status quo of his music or anything else for that matter makes a stink amongst ciphers in regards to his clout of markettable product. So by all means, if you don't like what 50 is feeding you, like Dr. Dre said "Express Yourself". Jay-Z said "A closed mouth don't get fed" Either you know enough hip hop to see how it came from the attitude of lyrics like these or you do not know enough about hip hop to even be worthy of comment about anything slightly related. To think that it is worthless to honestly comment on 50, is to give up on a person. The criminal justice system did not see fit to give up on 50, that's why he's free now.

Half the cats on here think he not really hard to the core anyway, well, maybe not, and that's all the more reason that he may be capable spewing other than his alleged fictitious lyrics. After all, he's really just an entertainer, so what if he's not hardcore, even if he was and anybody that buys his music had beef, it's not like he would come to your aid just because you bought his album. That's why the true authenticity of an artist is in no way dependent upon being gangster, some people just feel and think it matters, and that's sad actually, because they rob themselves of the hero within themselves when they limit the model of brave to just one type or figure, excluding their own personal figure of a hero. We are all sufficiently heroic with braveness exclusively designed to fit our own caliber of expression. We all respond meaningfully to what really means something to us.

The best of us have a little bad side to ourselves and the worst of us have a some good in us. Sometimes smoking weed disproportionately distorts the balance of the good/bad duality of our humanity and people are subject to play themselves. 50 is not serious enough for us to want to play ourselves by assaulting him and then spend mad time jerking off while dude recooperates once again to some chick who can't wait to say she banged 50 while he was recouping. Face it 50 Cent is a tough cookie and dude ain't gone crumble. Peace to 50 cent, Curtis Jackson is all right, we just differ in our methods to attain what all men can surely appreciate, Peace.

Like the movie "Hero" with Jet Li, the ultimate growth of the warrior is evident when he lays down his sword and his noble motive is still established and true greatness is established with bravery to face death without perpetuating death, giving birth to a Warrior's Heart. It's not a brave warrior that picks up a gun to face an armed enemy, that's actually a stand-off between two uncivilized cowards, both as equally afraid of each other as both are equally armed. Truly brave is the warrior that walks amidst the fearfully armed, while he is armed only with the courage of a warriors heart. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for thy rod and staff comfort thee. To kill is of fear and fear is the darkside. Power recognizes power. Those who seek to use great force against you recognize your power and see fit to amplify their power by arms, for only when armed are they a match for the unarmed man. Only the powerful are challenged, for to defeat one less powerful than one's self, is to gain nothing.

To be the best, one must challenge the best, Nas also espouses such truths. To agree to disagree is still an agreement. Everyone gets upset but to be moved to anger is to be out of control. That which angers you controls you. You can only hate what you love. If you have no feelings for a thing then it arouses no passion within you to hate it. Hate is inspired by the control factor of a thing. People tend to hate those things that are beyond control. Peace to each, we all need a piece of peace so we do not go to pieces. PEACE

I dont know why people are hating on 50 or G-Unit. From what I understand, Game was the first to bring their differences to the public. I dont think 50 would have done that, in fact he says this in the interview with Flex. I think his beef w/Nas, Jadakiss, and etc, all except sweetboy JaRule, could possibly end in the future. Maybe even Game. I think Game is upset because 50 in suing his manager for the Original 50 Cent DVD (which is great). For more background on 50, the Dvd Who Dares Wins, Bangum talks about how 50 was the biggest youngest drug dealer in his area. And how feared he was. I also hope he makes up with Bangum, the DVD also talks about how Bangum started a beef w/50. It seems like everybody is so jealous of this dude. What is the problem. If 50 couldnt rap, I dont care what color you are, unless your just out and out stupid, you wouldnt spend your money on the CD. Also, The massacre as already reached over 6 million units sold. It took Get Rich or Die Tryin from Feb to October to reach that. And he is still in the top 10...DAMN. As 50 said, keep hatin,. Why would anyone hate on someone who is at the bottom? This proves to him that he is doing right (except for the beefs). I just hope he is not burning bridges.

Kiki, you need to get your facts in order before you try to say them. 50 hasn't even sold 4 million records yet. You want to check the latest Sound Scan stats?

This is from Thursday's "Hip Hop Charts":

"Moving up one spot to # 8 is 50 Cent's The Massacre. Despite, The Game's tirade at Hot 97's Summer Jam, The Massacre dished out an additional 74,749 records this week. In total, the album has sold 3,786,493 copies."

Bootlegs don't count, you might want to remember that, because otherwise Jadakiss would probably be triple platinum by now.

Posted by: Dj Nahlege at June 10, 2005 12:18 PM

from all that I said you're concentrating on sales. Damn.

Whether it outsells GRODT or not, it doesnt matter. My main point was why do people hate on him? How does anyone know that he is fake or not, if they havent talked directly with him or grew up with him. I personally dont care. I enjoy his music. Im not obsessed though, hell, I bought GRODT after the Massacre came out. But why post comments like 7-1-3. This must be therapy for some people.

Posted by: Kiki at June 10, 2005 3:23 PM

what thug music sold other than death row or pac, like g-unit. That nigga broke records 4 singles in the top 10, damn homie. Ya'll just refuse to give this nigga his props, I fuckin never said he the best or anything close to it. B.I.G. then Nas, Jigga, and Styles P are the best in the game ever lyricly. All I'm sayin is for years we argue about who the rawest, but now since Fif came and changed the game muthafucka's cryin he garbage. Walk wit me, lets say rap is the crack game, it doesn't matter who has the best coke, nigga's can have garbage and still make more money than the nigga's wit the purest shit. It's how you market yo shit, damn Fif shit ain't garbage either, but look at the nigga marketing skills. Quit fronting like sales don't mean shit, labels put alot of gwop into these artist only to make profit for both parties, artist put time, energy and alot of planning into these projects hoping to make enough money to pay the label back and make a good piece of change for themself. This shit is all about that gwop, any rapper that say they in it for anything else is fuckin lying it cost millions to promote and market these artist, so why not get what you can since the labels own the masters and been raping nigga's for years. I wish Nas, The Lox, and every other raw rapper could be rich, but it's not about how raw you are, the old school proved that, it's about how fuckin smart you are. Master p booty as hell, but I respect his paper hustle, Baby booty, but he gettin his paper. Look at jigga, I respect his game more than Fif even though it took him a minute jigga didn't let these labels rape roca-fella, so it's about your business savy, not your accountants hustle game but yours, lets face it don't blame Fif for doing what rappers should've been doing, don't hate the player hate the fuckin game. God I'm only what you made me and on that note I'm rich bitch!!!! and how the game got a butterfly tatoo talkin bout change then go right back to dissin Fif, he so damn confused.
I WAKE UP, LOOK AT THE CEILING/ I'M ALIVE, WHAT A BEUTIFUL FEELING/

50 is the top dogg. Point blank. He reminds me of Stone Cold Steve Austin from WWE. Stone Cold was on top and stomped over basically all of his competition and so a lot of the other wrestlers hated on him. Same wit Interscope Jackson. When you're as successful and arrogant as him you're bound to get hated. Admit it, if 50 only went 2x plat on Get Rich and 1x plat on Massacre nobody would hate him. But since he's so insanely successful niggaz straight up try to disrespect every facet of the dudes life, music, and persona. Somebody explain to me how he's a snitch? How is he "fake?" Y'all haters just listen to whatever comes out of Jada's Black, dark, wesley snipes ass lips (jada's lips is so damn BLACK). If he's a snitch, what did he do? Who'd he snitch on? He's fake because he wears vests and can't roll around his hood? That's the dumbest shit i've ever heard. If you were as successful as that nigga, you wouldn't wanna go back to the hating hood either. 50 is like Barry Bonds. Top of his game and must endure immense amount of hate because of his position of power. I don't hate though i congratulate.

hey all you people have the right to an opinion but your antagonism of 50 only makes his fanbase stronger, he is a great businessman who has made his eternal mark on the music industry. he could show his obvious talent and rap like the 50 of old or make a marketable album that's gonna sell tonnes, what would you do?

As a leader, Curtis has no equal in the music business of Hip hop and arguable in all of music – save Jimmy Iovine. As a leader of a record label, Curtis is superior to Dre, Jay-Z, Em, (please don’t mention Nas), Damon Dash, and Diddy. G-unit, the record label, has achieved more than any other label within the first 2-3 years of existence and it is certainly the most successful label today. A great leader must be visionary while not loosing sight of reality, focused on results but attentive to others, show courage at all times while admitting his fear, manage, motivate and develop his people, be respected and followed by this people, and be knowledgeable about the business. He must know the strength and weakness of his people and himself, and must be able to acquire resources that will make up for any weakness. Above all, a great leader must show result. The result of great leadership should be visible in the organization is doing in good times and in bad times, how motivated and successful are the people, and how much attention the competition is paying to the organization. It is against this background that I considered Curtis a great leader, and a superior leader to Dre, Em, Dre, and Diddy. Again, Nas (one of the greatest MC of all time) and the self-proclaimed leaders like Yukmouth, Jada, Camron, and Game do not count, so I’m not going to mention them in this context going forward. Keep in mind that being rich does not make you a good leader. Donald Trump is rich (now at least) but he is a terrible leader. His company has filed for bank 2-3 times, and only the surge in NYC real estate in the past year that has saved him. Damon Dash is another terrible leader that is rich. His people hates him, he piggy-banked (no pun intended) on Jay-Z’s success and the fact that in the early days there we no real business people in rap besides Puff and Russell Simons.

Evaluating the leadership of 50 Cent

VISION: What was the first thing 50 said on his first LP? He said “G-unit”. Not 50 not Shady not Aftermath. Yes, he supposedly rose to the top too first, but that is because unlike his competitors, he had a vision; to build G-Unit as a national/global brand. He stayed true to that vision, by taking almost $600K less per album to sign with Em and Dre as opposed to the other labels. Why? He knows Em had a national and broader audience, and that G-Unit is already known in the streets. In addition, he knows Dre is a great producer and that Dre can spread the G-Unit name in the West. Again, he signed Buck to build his rep in the South. In fact, he has been talking to Buck well before he signed with Em, and told him that when he pops, he will come looking for Buck. Can you see how Curtis translated vision into strategy and how he implements the strategy?

FOCUS: Curtis is also focused and is well respected by his people. Whether he is beefing with others or creating music for others or developing a clothing line, he never loses sight of the end-goal which is to deliver quality product and be successful with it. Let’s take “beef” with other artist for example. Whereas this guys drop everything they are doing and focus their energy on the beef, Curtis focuses on his work, and deals with the beef in the context of his work. Nas dissed 50 in August 2004, Ja/Jada/Fat Joe released “New York, New York” in later 2004. 50 waited until March 2005 to respond. Why, that was when it was convenient and appropriate for him. Releasing diss records don’t sell albums, but releasing good and compelling records on an album sells albums. So 50 created a diss record, put it on his album and sold it. He made “I run New York”, put it on a mixtape, and sold it.

RESPECT: On the respect issue, many will disagree with me. However, I say a lot of the people who supposedly does not respect people are the haters. Certainly Banks, Buck, Yayo, D-Tay, and Olivia respects 50, but some will say that is because they are on his label. Well, if MOP and Mobb Deep does not respect 50, why sign with him? Ok, someone said it was about the money, if that was the case, why did they not sign with Aftermath or Shady? After all Dre and Em have money and power at Interscope too. Further more, if you listen to their interviews you can easily conclude that most Southern artist like Luda, Lil Flip, TI, Usher, Lil John, Triville, Lil Scrappy, and Slim Thug respects 50. Busta, Snoop, Dre, and Em certainly respect 50. If Dre did not respect 50, he will not share executive producer credit with 50 on Game’s album or even cede the same to 50 on the Massacre (see the back of the CD). If fact Dre respect 50 enough to given him access to his entire library of beats- past and present. Finally, Jay-Z respects 50 enough to state that “Nas, Em, and 50” are the best lyricist today! Diddy respects 50 enough to put him on a record with Biggie.

MANAGING/MOTIVATING Others: Just look at the success of Banks, Bucks, Game, and singles from Yayo and Olivia, and it takes little to see that is a good manager. He turned all those guys into individual starts. They can all go do shows without 50, and the shows will sell. They are also all getting paid; all millionaires. Hell, Yayo was getting paid during the Roc the Mic tour even though he was in jail. (Just a slight digression, Jay-Z and 50 Cent co-headlined the Roc the Mic tour. It was not just Jay-Z. So next time some tells you Jay-Z has the highest grossing Hip Hop concert, tell them that is not true, it belongs to 50 and Jay-Z). Bottom line is 50 takes care of his people. They are all getting paid on the AM3 tour and the side G-unit.

How does 50’s leadership compared to Dre, Em, Jay-Z, Diddy, and Damon Dash?

Em and Dre are great musician and producer respectively, but they do not have the leadership skills of 50 Cent. One can argue that the leadership skills that I outlined above are subjective, but one cannot argue with the result. Curtis develop new and unknown artists into multi-platinum artists – Banks, Game, Buck, 50 Cent and (soon to be) Yayo. While managing these artists, Curtis is also signed to G-Unit as a solo artist. Compare G-Unit to Shady, and you will quickly see that Em is the only artist that most people care for on that label. Also, G-Unit is a global brand in a way that Shady cannot come close to at all. People in Asia, Africa, South America and Europe can identify the G-Unit brand. Compare G-Unit to Aftermath, and you will see that Dre never developed/turn any average talent into starts. Pac, Snoop, Em and 50 are (I did not include Game because, I believe G-Unit made Game and not Dre, even though we all give credit to Dre because we respect him), are all great talent that Dre produced for, but I do not believe he made them. Now before the morons on these forum tell me Game is this and that, keep in mind that Dre could not do shit with Game for more than 2 years while Game was signed to just Aftermath, but once he signed with G-Unit (yeah, check his album cover for an official record not some bullshit claim by Game that he was not signed to G-Unit) 50 made Game famous in only 8 months (just 8 fucking months! Damn 50 is a leader) including more than 6-months recording in 50's studio in Long Island. Spider Loc just signed with G-Unit last November, and he's slowly buzzing. Who knew him when he was signed to Death Row? Look at Buck, 6-7 years with Cash Money and UTP, what did he achieve? Nothing! Now 3 years with G-unit, he's a multi-platinum artist and can travel the whole North America headlining a show by himself. Fat Joe and Jadakiss can't even sell tour tickets like Buck Marley. Word!

I don’t think Dre actively managed and shape this people. This is evident in how Dre reacts to conflicts amongst his people: he basically does nothing, which is not a sign of a great leader. Remember the problems Pac had and his ultimate death, Snoop troubles with Death Row, and recently Game’s shenanigans. Perhaps Dre has grown and that is why Em and 50 are more successful than Pac and Snoop, but how then does one explains the Game’s idiosyncrasies? Just because Dre created great beats and is a good musician does not mean he is a great leader. Dre clicked with Em and Curtis because those guys are great talent. I don’t know any average talent that Dre has turned into a star. Yes, he is working with Busta and Eve now, but what has he done with them? Yet, Busta is one of the finest MC around. Blame it on label red tape or whatever, the fact is as a leader Dre should be able to navigate that label red tape and deliver for his artist. After all, Curtis and Em could.

Compare G-Unit to Bad Boy, and you will see that Biggie what the element that made Bad Boy hot. As soon as Biggie died, we all saw how all the artist left and feuded with Diddy. Not a sign of a good leader. As per Roc-a-Fella, I’ve always thought that Jay-Z made them hot, and the other artists were just also-rans. They could not even leverage Jay-Z’s popularity to develop the other artists. I admit that the jury is somewhat out on Jay-Z.
