Most reviews for "Rize" follow the same pattern as Robert Ebert's, who is too fascinated with the electric dancing to tell us if the flick is any good or not. At least Christy Lemire of MSNBC let's us know Rize can get "a bit repetitive." Probably true.
How do you make a good feature length film about dancing, anyway? Even "You Got Served," which had incredible choreography, felt like it should have been chopped to an hour long After School Special.
Some of the fascination reviewers have with Rize is the claim that these LA kids have traded gang banging for krump dancing. Mmkay. I find that hard to believe. It's probably more accurate to say that the gang truce in LA has created the relatively peaceful atmosphere that allows them to do their crunk battling.
But whatever's clever. Thier version of the story makes for a better movie.
I do wonder why I've never heard krump dancing mentioned in any of the hip-hop mags I trust with keeping me hip. If this is not proof that the hip-hop media is still too New York-centric, I don't know what is. While most mags scramble for a Jay-Z interview, Mike Jones and Dizzee Rascal go platinum, Jermaine Dupree solidifies his musical legacy, and krump battling fills LA's Great Western Forum and becomes a major motion picture.
I'm eager to get up to date, but I'll wait for DVD to see "Rize". I don't feel comfortable going to a theater to see greased up men doing stripper dances unless I get to turn to my neighbor every 10 minutes and reassure him I'm "no karamo."

Im out here in LA right now and honestly i havent even heard about this shit until commercials and all that promotion.i personally dont fuck with dancin movies cuz thats not my thing but they might make some paper.theres always room for somethin different i just aint feelin how these niggaz dress up in clown suits and shit thats a little "TOO KARAMO"
EVERY DAMN DANCE MOVIE I'VE SEEN HAS BEEN LAME AS FUCK..."SAVE DA LAST DANCE", "HONEY", "U GOT SERVED", SHALL I GO ON......SO I THINK I'LL GO SEE XXX 2 AGAIN IN DA DOLLAR MOVIES B4 I SEE DIS SHYT.......
Fuck that seizure shit. Where's Shabba-Doo and Turbo?
I agree with c b w about the comment about shabba-doo and boogaloo shrimp but, bein a krumper myself I'm a tad bias when it comes to this movie. Boogaloo Shrimp and Shabba-doo were innovators (shrimp taught Michael Jackson the moon walk) and so is Tommy the Clown. He invented something new and fresh.
YEA BUT CAN YOU BREAKDANCE WIT A BROOM????????
I haven't seen the movie and I don't plan on seeing it, it looks like a gimmick, it won't be around for long. But if it's positive and makes them money, it's all good
Black people invent something fresh and new, white people patent it and capitilize
Word to that, Devil Son
this movie gives blacks an encouraging way to believe in their selfs.go and see the best movie out 2 day
I from Cali but don't live there now and the last time I went home I seen Krump dacing done it is tight but the movie might be to early becuse everyone else is'nt biteing it yet
it looks like a remake of B2k's U Got Served-but more like a documentary, but i haven't seen it yet and don't plan on it.
I RESPECT THE OPINIONS YALL HAVE BUT WHY MUST YALL LOOK DOWN ON SOMETHING THATS POSITIVE THAT KEEPS KIDS AWAY FROM GANGS. MY COUSIN LARRY FEATURED IN THIS MOVIE IS FROM WATTS AND THIS MOVEMENT HAS KEPT HIM AWAY FROM ALL THE NEGATIVETY AROUND HIS HOOD. THIS MOVEMENT HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE MID 90'S AND IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT IT FINALLY GOT SOME SHINE
The movie is dope..and I don't think it's repetitive at all...and it's only 86 minutes...lots of great dancing, layered with important commentary...check my blog to see more...
hay THE BUZINESS we need more people like you posting here coz thats soo true finaly we get to see positive black images on screen instead of the ussual fifty/game bullshit we all know what being gansta is all about, what we need is something to inspire other black youth and youth in general for that matter to be positive amean i seen the reviews i have been to the site and it looks hot.I was actualy so inspired it kinda reminds me of how hiphop started it wasnt about being gansta it was getting away from it thats how it was back then and biggups to david la chappele!.i just hope these pop mawfuckas like christina arguilera or missy elliot dont jump on it.Coz i've heared whispers here and there anyway is all love !
I dont really think that its all white mofos that do that shit, but dayumm i saw christina arguilera talking about incorporating that in her new videos haha so we all know where that is going, when's the last time you saw a black b-boy or b-girl in them conventions?hmm its coming mawfuckas haha another patent on tha way,for real we better support these positive black youth and embrace it or other cultures will and we'll start complaining how they're taking over our shit.
I wonder how people can compare this to dance movies. Yes dance movies are lame. dance movies include things such as "You Got Served" and "Honey." But that is because they have a weak stiryline and bad acting. this is not a dance movie. It is a documentary about a dance movement. Something like "Tupac Resurrection" only before any of these ppl make it big in a commercial sense. i don't know anything about krump dancing, but it sounds too much like crunk, and from the commercials I have seen, alot of it is stuff that I have seen being done in Atlanta for years and years. I am not pre-judging it as a rip-off or claiming that we did anything before them; I honestly don't know, I will have to see the DVD before I can make any judgements. But I hope it can help the youths. That is most important.
I think krump dancing is tight ass hell. But if you aint from COMPTON, WATTS or LA you would'nt know about clown dancing and krump dancing!!!
DID YOU KNOW THEY KRUMP DANCE IN IRAQ?
WELL HOW DO I KNOW ? IM DEPLOYED HERE IN IRAQ !!! US ARMY !!!!
I think that in this world, in the US we live in, dancing is the very last thing we need to focus on. the media already thinks thats what were about, no matter the situation. chicken, beer, rims, money and hoes is what they see, and they probably wont review this and give it good rankings no matter how much positivity it shows. I think we need to focus on getting our buisness senses together, in every aspect of the word. There are waaay to many youths looking for a short cut in life that doesnt involve learning..or at least they think it doesnt. there is an MC on every corner wherever you go, dancers,b-ball players etc. like thats as far as we can go or something. Alot of things are fucked up, and it ALL points back to the black family which doesnt exist as much as it should. Fuck making excuses or smoothing things over...bill cosby was on the right page in attacking black america for slacking off, its like what else can you do to wake niggas up but scream at um'? And then somebody will come along and disagree because they'd rather smooth things over and make excuses. Its really time to quite these wack films and start slapping white america around with some REAL slavery flicks, or some Egyptian history films & not like national treasure(which touched on but didnt go in depth due to its rating and disney, and the fact it would reveal alot of lies we are condidtioned to believe). We need some balls in our community, and not another hood flick either. Something that WONT generate big dough(due to content and white america) but will educate kids and adults alike. We need to kill this need to be entertained so much by money and rims and get on our job as cliche as it sounds...we are in last place and most dont even care
I can appreciate creativity on any level and while you people sit in the suburbs and complain that a movement that encouages black youth to express them selves in a way that is nonviolent I often hear words like lame. Well i can applaud my young sisters and brothers for being pioneers in a movement that will more that likely be the next big dance movement since breakdancing. Being pioneers I hope they take some type of financial investment because when little billy in on t.v. doing the dance better believe he is getting paid. In los Angeles the gang stuff is for real people actually die. So before you get "gangsta" look ouside your door and tell me if it looks like compton or mayberry.
In response to superb, as a black man in ameriKKKa I am often viewed as a criminal. I work in a plant and I am doing very good. I had dreams of attending college but when you are surrounded by poverty our out look becomes bleak. You seem to be a positive brother with a message that should be viewed on a larger scale. I challenge you to make a diffrence in the community that you live in. America is one of the richest countries in the United States and this comes from the years of free labor they recived from The Black Man. We were spat upon by our mayors and presidents for years. Grown men forced to turn the other cheek while white men beat us and raped our mothers sisters daughters and wives. Many of these acts took place while this country had the us constitution as the rules this county would follow in these rules it calls for the equality of all "people" of america. The black man was seen as the property of the "people" of the united states. This is still taking place today. While hip hop publications such as XXL often take a stand and when money comes into question the change thier tune for example Eminem "the best rapper alive." which is worth a argument but in the following issue the take back what they said in the Editorial by the yellow nigga. Before you are anything in this world you have to be a man and rule number one is stand for something or fall for anything.
If we are going to invent something, we need to patent it. RIZE was a motivational movie for the privileged people, but we are more superior than just dancing, we are businesspeople, heroes, inventors, investors, billionares, we black people changed the nation and built it on top of that. To me RIZE looked like a bunch of monkeys swinging on trees, embarssing. Do white folks make a movie about them two stepping, NOPE. Once again white people will make a big killing off the sweat and labor off the black people. Dance, go on tour and go the fuck home like And 1 ballplayers. Where's the greenbacks??????? Dare, I truly believe you can make a difference with the igronant and naieve. Hip-Hop's power has gotten totally watered down due to lackluster imitations of co-robbery of black america, dress like us, look like us, talk like us, tan their skin like us. Paul Mooney said it best. "Everyone wanna be a nigga but nobody wants to be a nigga."
CRAZY RAY, good luck in IRAQ, I hope you make it home safe my brother I don't know why they willingly deploy you guys out there "JUST FOR OIL", so be safe.
PEACE
Devil Son sweet heart I'm going to break this to you as gently as a possibly can. What these kids are doing is insprirational. They're are doing to break the usual Hip-Hop model. Krumping and Clowning is taking it back to the trible dancing in our homeland. The face painting takes it back to our war days in Africa so maybe your looking for the bad instead of the optimistic
Blu, If you did not know, I was talking about the business side of things not the origination of Krumping. I careless about it, but as far as making a profit out of it, the people that were doing it won't get much for it, instead capitilists are going to market off this dance.
Just so you know !!

Krump dancing is a spiritual aspect of dance ... every move has Spiritual Followings behind it .. I dont think they expressed this in the movie.
