To my surprise they were having a roundtable discussion about the verdict, with "Micheal Jackson, Not Guilty" parties (as host AJ put it) during the commercials. Co-host Big Tigger kept yelling "NOT GUILTYYYYY!" as if he were a DJ doing call-and-response in a club.
Panel member Dougie Fresh and BET News host Jacque Reid shared something that hit home for me. Both of them were unusually tense when they heard the verdict was ready. I had the same feeling, and if you're Black you already understand why.
Yes, Micheal is an international star with fans across the color line. And yes, it seems that he has tried to run away from his Blackness with his plastic surgery. Despite all that I am sure he still has special support from Black folks.
Seeing Micheal on trial is like seeing our own brother be accused. We all have been accused by the police for something we haven't done, or at least have family that has gone through that. And if you know how it feels to "fit the description" you can't help but be skeptical of a weak case against another Black man that adds up to little more than "he looks like someone who would've done this."
