Why White Kids Love Hip-Hop

why white kids love hip hop.jpg

My answer? It's because of the bangin beats.

However, I'm sure Bakari Kitwana has a more juicy answer, worthy of the book's 200+ pages.

I personally think they are drawn to hip hop because of its rebellious nature. White kids have always been rebellious and right now hip hop is the most rebellious form of expression in America. It was the same way with rock and roll, heavy metal, grunge, and punk rock. What ever their parent don't want them to get involved with...thats exactly what they get involved in.

Seriously, what's rebellious about hip hop nowadays? I guess it's still considered on that level by some (like really conservative, white bread types) but like Saul Williams said: "Hip Hop has become Republican..." (mp3 link: http://www.soundclick.com/util/DownloadSong.cfm?ID=1942689)

Ian,

All due respect:

What is not rebellious about hip hop? Just about everything in hip hop is rebellious to one point are another. Hip Hop is rebelling against the powers that be saying, this is the way you should talk, dress, act, conduct yourself, and feel about social issues. Hip Hop says fuck that I'm gone dress how ever I want. You say wear slacks and lofters, but I'm gone wear baggy jeans and Timbs or 1's. From the clothes we were to how loud we listen to our music is form of rebellions. Its our subliminal way of saying fuck you to a society that has shown us (African Americans) the back side of their hand for centuries.

Rebellion - opposition to one in authority or dominance

Respectfully

Blitz: Nothin personal, but, umm, you're wack as hell. If you're dead serious about hip hop then you need to work on your lyrics, cuz you fixin to be the next Vanilla Ice.
I am also a 15 year old M.C., but you sound like I did when I was 11.
Here's some advice, start freestyling. Get into cyphers, assumin your not one of these rich white kids who thinks its funny. Study up on the greats Rakim, KRS-One, Chubb Rock is a good one, because one of your problems is that your rhyme pattern is so simplistic Dr. Seuss could've written it in the third grade. For someone who "loves wordplay", you aren't particularly adept at it.

As a local rap artist in billings, MT
i believe that Bakari does not know what he's talking about. just because he's been around hip hop doesn't give him the right to judge what whites blacks natives or latins what to listen to. Music is for people not for races. and using racial slur like Wigger is very inmmature on his part EX(if a black person started singing country, people would not look at it as negative or okward, but a white guy get's into hip hop and the whole culture goes off the deep end) as a native american it upsets me to see this hatred and negativity coming from a minority, as a minority it's are purpose to keep peace with in are country but still stand our ground and Bakari crossed the line by using racial slurs, a white guy drop the N bomb and he's considered a racist and a skin head Ect. on a scale of 1 to 10 on how good this book was i consider it to be a -10
