Product Placement in Hip-hop Videos
Silly me. I thought the camera lingers on the iPod in Game's Hate It or Love It video because he really likes the mp3 player. However, according to the Strictly Business blog it seems that Apple paid for the iPod to be placed in the video.
And that XBox featured in the Ludacris Number One Spot video? Paid for. Mattel is in overdrive, placing their portable video player in that same Ludacris video, and in T.I.'s Bring Em Out.

This is actually a good thing. I mean back in the day, people would see the rap videos and follow the trend. And remember when Busta did Pass The Courvoisier? Bartenders said more people started requesting it. It's good to see rappers getting paid to endorse products. Also, it's a way to cross-promote without attaching yourself permantely to a rapper who might get into an incident and tarnish your company.

Don't sleep on the Herbal Essence placement in the Ahsanti "Only U" video just before the launch of her commercials with them. I also just read that McDonalds just hired a marketing firm to entice hip hop artists to mention McDonalds and or their products in their lyrics. Go figure...
