Latinos Stand Up!

Part 1: Tego Calderon Brings Congas, Pro-Black Images To La Kalle

Arriving at NYC’s La Kalle’s Third and allegedly last Block Party I was greeted by a lot of hoochies and lots of a**holes (guys with sunglasses inside). But hey it’s an urban event so it’s expected. The story here is that the concert itself was decent. Nothing to rave about but nothing to ish on. Just blah.

4514582252.jpg

Ivy Queen, who had one of best performances of the night and had a glam rock wig on, started the show. She went through hits (“Te He Querido, Te He Llorado”) and freestyled (“My name is not J. Lo/ It’s Ivy Queen, la riena del reggaeton”). Then came Jowell y Randy (1/2 of Casa de Leones), who went through some songs but everyone was just waiting for one “No Te Veo.” They also made some humping motions which got like two girls wet. Then the Latin rap god MC, Tego Calderon, pulled an alleged “oh my plane got stuck in PR” trick. But it was obvious the Afro-Puerto Rock was in the building. His performance was the best received. He performed with a live band (congas included), African-style dancer, with pro-Black images on screen. Great Tego ish.

  • man shut the hell up all pr's dont have african ancestry some are european, some are of pacific islander origin overall they are puerto rican, i think you blacks are jealous youdont have a country to claim as your own whats your beef,

i also want to add you african americans are black but guess what else, many of you have european/ native american ancestry (but yet you manipilate puerto ricans for not being black or identifying as black when many of us aren't.)

some white american have black ancestry too but they are white, the white is the most current unless one of they parents is white or black or both.

but you know what else your not white, your not natives your black puerto rico has blacks, asians, whites, mullatos, tainos and other itsa diverse island so the next time you try to say puerto ricans deny maybe because they dont have it and if they did why care, we're latino not african american, not west indian, not american our salute is to pur country=puerto rico wheres yours? why is it always that african americans want non black pr's to call themselves black? pr is rich in african things but one thing you must understand that all the pr music wasenjoyed by the lower class then the upper class prsembraced it, which is why you never see any afro-puerto ricans onthe forefront of pr music.

an afro-puerto rican is a pr whos black not one who may have dominate african ancestry

puerto rico had the same history as the united states, slavery, immigration of europeans, racism, colonization of land except america turned its back on the dominate british folk.

as i read before all europeans of had roles in slavery set foot in america and killed natives. as far as im concerned since im not a taino im an immigrant in pr too but pr is my culture my island my pride something americans dont have hahaha!

i was born in carolina, pr then my family came to america in 86,im dark brown with str8 hair my mom is an east indian migrant whose family history goes back before the united states took pr from spain and my father is a 3/4 spanish with no african background.

you cant stereotype us all in a 3 ancestrial box fool we're diverse just like america, but americans dont know the difference between race and national origin anyway

  • i want to add tego embraces his african side because he is black have you thought about that? being from a certain country dont mean your automatically negro or even part.

what i find staggering is that black americans think that since a person is latino he isnt or cant be white, all whites arent one color there rae dark caucasions, i personally think some of you really need to travel or pick up a book.

think of a black american finding out that a dude next to him is latino which is an ethnic group starts to bad mouth europeans but dont realise the dude he talking to is white-latin american from urugay with dark features which dont automatically =african mixed

  • juan montoya ,
As a fellow Rican, bro it is well known that a LARGE MAJORITY do have black ancestry, which is really what the person was trying to address. Even the light ones had black ancestry on that damn tree. I am light skin but my great grandmother and aunts are black. I cannot stand when we start this Ricans do not have black blood sh*t but we are so obsessed with claiming white lineage like that shit makes us superior. I wish some of yall would stop with the obsession with whiteness. White skin does not make you better, especially in this country that only considers whiteness to be straight up Anglo/WASP. What the fuck is so great about "saying" you are white??
Also, to say that Black Americans are jealous that they do not have a country is stupid.... they have a fuckin CONTINENT.

We Puerto Ricans are really not much different from them, we both are mostly mixed, we both had European slavemasters that forced their culture on us and we both fight for the same crumbs for whitey's table. The only difference is Black Americans are not obsessed with their white blood.

  • If you review the Genetics Bazzar it indicates that there is a small percentage of Puerto Ricans that are pure European. The bazaar goes on to state that recent immigrants tend to have more European blood but this is not the case for families that date back for generations on the island. Maybe your family is so-called white but we all know that is not the case for a great precentage of Puerto Ricans including myself. I am tired of my people being ashamed of their obvious African ancestry. What is so bad about being black anyways? I think that part of us makes us strong, beautiful and culutured.

  • montoya all the stuff you said is an embarassment to our race. it is apparent you were raised to worship all things white or you would never have made such a disregarding statement about our african history and contributions on the island. you are not a true puerto rican my friend. please study the history of our people before you speak for us again.

  • Puerto Ricans are a mixed beautiful people and we should never be ashamed of that. To claim that you are something that you are not is a disgrace to your roots. I am Taino, Spanish and African with pride. I was born and raised on the island. Our Spanish is wrapped with so many beautiful African and Taino words so we should be proud that we were able to weave these together so well.

  • I'm african american and all of your comments are true. The first governor of PR was African. When i went to the island last year, i thought everyone was african american. I was ignorant cause mots PR in Newyork are light skin but, it's like cuba, the white cubans left casue castro wanted equal rights for everyone but, the blacks stayed and the whites live in miami battling the haitians..come on people we all were slaves and spaniards? Man they killed everybody and stole all the gold from PR and Hispianola and we glorify spanish? and english for that matter?? African Americans need to learn they own language or at least one of Africa but, it's a shame to say, they belive in jesus. When they came here they were chanting Alllah and the name was Kunta Kente..

PR i love and they are African and have just as much rights to hiphop and anything black just like us...WHAT??

  • mani just want to say just because you have african acestry 5generations back dont mean anthing this is my opiion if yo arenot more than 1/4 negro to me you aint black

my family is black my mom her mom my dad his dad and so forth and the blackness leads down to slavery

lol @ doggy b our language is english whether gullah or aave just like yalls is spanish the moajority of prs are mostly moriscos anyway andi seriously doubt that eery single puerto rican is of taino lineage and that dude everyone is agreeing with has a point and flaws. to the person to say he isnt a real pr lol whatsa real puerto rican and then tell me does that apply to the american sense!

to that dude who says we as african americans dont have a country to claim we are no different from blacks who live in cuba as cubans, or as blacks in columbia as columbians. i cant grab the pr way of thinking because most arent black about 35% of the island is of african heritage and 9% are black as i said beforehaving african ancestry isnt the sameas being. but cut dude some slack puerto rico is diverse its no different from my country and what he said about the immigration part is true

its good to see tego, acknowledging his blackness but the problem that be with black puerto ricans are the ones in america not pr when it comes to blackness as in race. so who's to say black puerto ricans in pr dont call themselves black they know they are black, what we african americans need to do is learn how to differiate between puerto ricans in the U.S and mainland puerto ricans because i beleive there is a difference esp when it comes to black ones.

ihm willing t debate anyone on this matter.

this is to the one who says only a small % are pure euro, so! im pretty sure there ah some thats mostly spanish/european i have yet to here a pr say they are white or evenv part white but make racist rants towards white ppl lmao.

  • Exactly what African Americans are shoving blackness down your throats? I am Afro- Puerto Rican and I live in Atlanta, Ga. were there are a mecca of professional, successful, proud black people that are in no way interested in forcing white obsessed Puerto Ricans, Dominicans or Cubans to acknowledge their black roots. African Americans are just use to light-skin or mixed people, so they know one that has black ancestry when they see one. As well, I think that possibly the blacks that are "shoving" anything down your throat is amazed that you can come from a culture of admixture of 3 races and yet only desire to claim the portion that was forced upon you. That in itself is astonishing. I have seen this behavior all my life and I will never understand why my people are so enthralled with being considered white when most white people in America or abroad do not consider you to be such nor do they think you are a better version of colored people. You're either Anglo white or other to them. Even the Spainards would fall over if you called them Latinos, because they are Europeans and do not want to be categorized with us. I have 3 that work with me and they have actually made that very clear.

But either way, if you like it, then I love it and my blackness with no need to pretend to be something that I am not. I am Afro-Puerto Rican and proud of what my ancestors stood for and against. Ciao.

  • what is sad is to see how race really does divide, even Puerto Ricans. Where are all the old school boricuas at? Us Puerto Ricans better get our mind right, because we slowly losing all the unity we used to have. I mean blacks used to call us Germans on Rikers island, and it wasn't because of our complexions, it was because of our unity. Of course we have afrcian blood in us, Puerto Rico is over 500 hundred years old, way older than this country. Black americans have african blood in them too, what is that doing for the people in Africa? Shit. Boricuas don't feed into the confusion. Whether we look black, indian, white, arabian, asian, whatever, our blood is our blood. The men and women who came together to bring us forth is who we is, and we are all famalia. Personally I don't even like hearing that stupid talk when it comes to my people. Black puerto ricans, and white Puerto ricans better stop that dumb shit. Nosotros somos boricua... And we must hold each other down. Stop letting everyone else tell us who we are, we is, what we is, and we definitely is nothin to fuck with. We stay letting people divide us wheter it be a white american, or black american, that is why we still don't get repesented correctly. We not really seen in dominant roles in the world of Hip Hop even though we helped create the music up in the Boogie down. And we definitely not seen in dominant roles within white hollywood, and that equation goes into every other aspect of american industry. Boricuas be careful whatever your color is that shit has no bearing on how we are to treat and hold each other down. Puerto Ricans stand the fuck up.
