With all the Hip-Hop Honors news last week I started seeing more press on pioneers. One cat that’s been doing it for Latinos for years is Crazy Legs of HHH honoree the Rock Steady Crew. He recently caught up with the cats over at [Sí] Entertainment and he had interesting things to say.

On being PR in the early days of hip-hop:
By 1979 a lot of brothers were just not into it. They used to dis Puerto Ricans like, “Oh, why you still throwing yourself on the floor?!” I used to get that all the time. I hung around black, Puerto Ricans, whatever, it didn’t matter to me. And during those days you have Puerto Ricans that only hung out with Puerto Ricans. That was never my style.
Is hip-hop dying?:
Hip-hop don’t need to be saved. The people that are portraying what they do as hip-hop, and it isn’t, are the ones that need to be saved. “Hip-hop is dead?” It all depends on which direction you’re looking in, or which station you’re listening to, what TV program you’re watching and what so-called hip-hop movie you’re looking at. I’m not some self-righteous hip-hop head. I think what Jeezy and all of them do, it’s entertaining and it’s fun. All we need is a little more balance and a little more respect for what it is as a culture in its entirety.

Shout out to Crazy Legs and all the founders of hip-hop. When I was intorduced to hip - hop in 1985, it was all about breakdancing, popping and locking and grafitti. That was art. But now these youngster are learning hip-hop throught BET and MTV. Thats why there view of hip-hop is slandered.

Hip-Hop is not dead, its essence is. Everything evolves like fashion, cars, technology. Does anyone ever say " fashion is dead ? " just cause its different from what people wore 10/15 years ago ? NO. it just evolved into a different phase but hip-hops original form IS dead. think about that.
