Latinos Stand Up!

Capone-N-Noreaga's Arma Secreta

By now you’ve heard about the Loud.com Presents Battle Rap contest. It’s where ya homeboy Steve Rifkind (he signed Big Pun) picks the next cat to blow. Along to help him is a slew of beat makers including frequent NORE collaborator SPK. Check what he had to tell me about the contest and his sound.

What's your involvement with Loud.com? What type of artists are you looking for?
I was asked if I wanted to be a part of this Loud.com rap competition, and I was more than happy to take part in something where I could play my part in what I do best, and that's providing the ill beats for these MCs until we find the best one based on best lyrics, flow and originality. This is more than the American rap idol. Contestants can sign up anytime and it's never too late to win. SRC, Pure Games, the other producers and myself pick one winner per week, per round for 10 weeks. Then we will select 3 semi-finalists out of those 10 week periods to compete in the final round and get a chance to win $100,000 and a record deal with SRC.

Your sound is very different to that of other cats who do reggaeton beats. How would you describe it?

In 1998 The Source Magazine pointed me out as the Beat Smith for the new millennium. That's when my production was only hip-hop, and ever since then, I've been growing musically. So now, I'm able to do R&B, reggaeton, dancehall . . . but always applying my hip-hop techniques to anything I produce. And since I hardly use any samples in my production, I find my own way of keeping my music fresh and updated. You can finger point the few people that can do what I do. It’s not just any producer that can produce a thugged out track for Capone-n-Noreaga and then turn around and create a chart topping commercial reggaeton joint that would help the genre to get spins on MTV and BET for the first time ever. I feel like I've been blessed with this success because of my love and passion for hip-hop. So stay tuned ‘cus I ain’t goin nowhere. And check me out my work on Loud.com/spkilla!
