Pt. 1: Calle 13, "Eminem's music isn't as powerful as mine."

As promised here’s some quotes from my chat with the Calle 13 dudes. The Latin Grammy winners are about to release their Residente o Visitante album next week and being heralded as the new face of reggaeton. I bet Ivy Queen must love the idea. Anywho check what these creative boricuas got to say to Goya.

On the new album:
Residente: “The new album seems like it’s another debut album. There are a lot of Latin American themes. We have Andean music from Peru, some tango-influenced music which we recorded some in Argentina. La Mala Rodriguez from Spain got down with us, Los Orishas from Cuba, Tego Calderon—as far as credibility, the album has a lot. We wanted to collaborate with more people but it couldn’t a full album of that. We mixed rap with different types of Latin American folkloric music.”

Visitante: “This album is very interesting. It gathers all the influences I’ve had throughout my life. This is the third album I’ve produced in my career and I don’t find a flaw. The actual music is what distinguishes it from the others.”

On Rene being the Puerto Rican Eminem:
Residente: “Some things are similar and to me it’s an honor because I like Eminem’s style. But at the same time rap-wise we might be similar but Em’s music isn’t as powerful as the music my brother’s making.”

Visitante’s beats are better than Dr. Dre’s beats?
Residente: “No! It’s a different type of music. I’ve been listening to Dre since I was a kid but you can’t compare. I say some things and he says other things. The new album is more concentrated on Latin America.”

  • Calle 13 are true artist in the reggaeton genre ( even though I still hate it and its hick music) I have a little bit of respect for them. Now residente saying that he is better than Eminem, you must have been drinking that Puerto rican rum.

    Just got an advance copy of Calle 13’s latest album, “Residente o Visitante”, listening to it as I type this.

    I am already feeling track # 3 “La Fokin Moda” where Rene responds back at Wisin & Yandel for the comments they made towards Calle 13 at the Latin Grammy’s this past year.

    Remember, when all the Reggaetoneros (Don Omar, W&Y, Ivy Queen) walked out of the awards because Calle 13 took home all the awards within their genre.

    As for the interview, did you get a chance to ask them about W&Y?

    Primo, I am dominican and my dad is Afro-latino. So that means if you saw my dad you will hate him right? Why are Mexicans hating on Blacks in the west coast? Dominicans and Puerto Ricans get along fine with the brothers why cant ya'll? I definetly wont support youre cause if its racist primo..im sorry...were not racist in the east coast.   • They are half brothers. Residente (Rene) is the MC, and Visitante (Eduardo) does the beats.
    The names come about because whenever Eduardo went to visit Rene's house they told the security guard in their subsection "I'm resident, and he's a visitor", hence, Residente and Visitante. Calle 13 (13th street) is where Rene's house is at.
