Daddy Yankee, A GIANT Among Reggaetoneros

Daddy Yankee, possibly the only reggaeton cat suburbanites know by name, got a dope write-up in GIANT Magazine’s April/May issue (Eve‘s on the cover). The piece written by superb scribe and one of Goya’s homegirls, Celia San Miguel, goes in-depth on El Cangri’s new album, his background and other interesting tidbits. Below are some excerpts.

Jennifer Lopez Likes To "F---ing" Party

And we come to the end of our Jenny Lopez CD giveaway. Check the next post to see who the fifth and final winner is. This past Tuesday Jennifer took over a bunch of blocks in NYC’s Times Square, according to the NY Daily News. She actually arrived late to her own event at Spotlight Live on Broadway, only to be greeted by 700-plus aficionados.

"Tonight is such a special night for me," Lopez told the crowd. "I'm gonna sing a couple of songs, and then we can get to really fucking partying!"

Can someone tell Nelly Furtado and her peeps that she is not LATINA? Stop repping us you ain’t down. Her latest video for "All Good Things Come to an End" was shot in PR and directed by Israel Lugo and Gabriel Coss.

Black Eyed Peas' Herb Gets Arrested

I guess the Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas didn’t get the memo: getting arrested in hip-hop is so 2004. It doesn’t really get ya street cred anymore just makes you look like a dummy. Taboo real name Jaime Luis Gomez was arrested for an alleged DUI after a crash, police said.

Goya Flavored Wednesdays

Goya spills the beans on . . .

Dat Dude:
Joell Ortiz was at again. Dropping bombs on Green Lantern’s show. Check myspace.com/joellortiz to hear it. If you wanna catch duke live, he’ll be performing at NYC’s Knitting Factory on April 4th. Also, I just got word that he’s hard at work on his Aftermath debut and he brought Domingo (Pun’s “Dream Shatterer”) along to craft some tracks. Now that’s a man of his words.

joellortiz.jpg

Video Music Box:
Check Ivy Queen’s new video for “Que Lloren.” Even though she’s still got a long ass way to go she is looking sorta decent. Anyway dope song and nice video.

Cypress Hill Still Fumando

I always had mad love for Cypress Hill. They repped us hard before Joe or Pun. I was so into them that they were one of the reasons that I indulged in the green and I don’t mean money. I know dumb, but I was 11 what you want for me. I have since left the habit but I still go back to Cypress ganja odes. For those of you who haven’t seen them live here’s your chance. They’ll be one of the many dope acts at this year’s Rock the Bells festival.

Wisin y Yandel, Luny Honored At BMI

Reggaeton monster producer/songwriter Luny of the beatmaking duo Luny Tunes got kudos from his contemporaries this past Friday. He was selected as "Songwriter of the Year" at the 14th annual BMI Latin Music Awards in Las Vegas, NV.

He received the award due to his writing talents on a bunch of Wisin y Yandel hits. Songs like "Llamé Pa' Verte 'Bailando Sexy'," "Mayor Que Yo" and "Rakata," were all written by Luny along with WYY. His partner in beats, Tunes, was also honored.

Jay-Z's Reggaeton Mix

I know what y’all are thinking. Jay doesn’t know what do to with reggaeton, (ie: Hector El Father). But in this case all he did was lend his vocals to The Prezidents’ Jiggaton mixtape, Presidential Radio Vol. 1.

jiggatonfrontcover.jpg

The Prezidents are comprised of producers from L.A. (Gutta), Phoenix (Ray Be Heard) and Jersey City (Matt Heiss). The three beat makers were the first winners of Rocwilder’s RocBattle.com site. They took Hov’s acapellas and placed them over exclusive reggaeton beats produced by them. Some cats that join Jigga on these mixtape is MIA’s Garcia and Roc La Familia‘s Hector ‘El Father.

Mayra Veronica Snatches Jamie Foxx's Magic

My favorite reggaetonera Mayra Veronica is at it again. The Cuban bombshell’s new single “Mama Mia” is rising through the Latin Music charts.

The single was number 26 last week and is expected to top the charts soon. There’s a tropical version and a reggaeton one. The album is called Vengo Con To and has been doing decent numbers.

MayraBACK.jpg

Oh Psycho Les, where have you been? Apparently grinding hard. He’s been putting out mixtapes and doing shows like crazy. This one in particular, Loco En La Cabeza, put out by Tre Unda is type fire.

Shakira, Beyonce Want Don Omar, J Lo Goes Home

More proof that Don Omar is a star beyond his own genre. He jumped on the remix to “Beautiful Liar,” the Beyonce track with Shakira. The remixed cut will be on B’s upcoming re-release of B’Day, where’s she’s including a couple of Spanish songs. Mathew Knowles, B’s pops, reached out to Don Omar to get the reggaetonero on the song.

759922_356x237%5B1%5D.jpg

"This is one of the biggest steps in my career,” said Don Omar in a statement. “It had always been a dream of mine to collaborate with Beyonce and it's now a reality."

Rosie Perez Says Jay-Z Pulled A "Bitch Move"

The original Puerto Rock honey (post-Iris Chacon and pre-Jennifer Lopez) Rosie Perez had a hilarious interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live last week. She was on the show promoting her June DVD release of her 2006 documentary Yo soy Boricua, Pa'que tu lo sepas! Perez, who’s known to speak her mind, spoke about her favorite rappers.

Pitbull, Joell Ortiz En Problemas

Some of our Latino MC representatives are the middle of some legal drama. First in a federal court decision Pitbull’s record label TVT, has been ordered to pay $9.1 million in damages to independent record label Slip-N-Slide.

Goya Flavored Wednesdays

Goya spills the beans on . . .

Dat Dude:
Congrats to El Cangri for celebrating his first anniversary last week of doing ABC’s Daddy Yankee On Fuego Radio Show. The nationally syndicated show reaches top Latino markets like L.A., NY, Miami and Houston.
“Daddy Yankee On Fuego is an innovative show featuring exclusive content with mixes by the best Puerto Rican reggaeton DJs,” said Yankee. “We are still the spot to hear the latest reggaeton hits and we want to expose up-and-coming artists to widely diverse audiences.” For more info go to abcradio.com.

Video Music Box:
Check Calle 13’s new vid for “Tango Del Pecado.” The clip features Residente with his real-life girlfriend Denise Quiñones getting hitched. reggaeton friends Tego Calderon and Voltio drop by to give dap.

Chingo Bling aka Walking Stereotype

Today at 3PM (Pacific) on Mun2 Chingo Bling premieres his new video for “Like This And Like That” produced by Carnival Beats. The track is type hot except for Chingo. I ain’t gonna hate on the marketing genius that he is but is it really a wise choice to come off like a Latino jiggaboo?

Wu Tang Is Definitely Not Something To F*&# Wit

Remember a couple years back when everybody and they mama had a vanity Latino label? Diddy and Bad Boy Latino, Jay and Roc La Familia (actually still around) and the Wu with Wu Tang Latino. Well the latter went completely awry due to shady business dealings. Their main artists Los Yo Yais, comprised of Fuego and N.P. Killah, are persevering.

According to the group it seemed like the Wu never took their Latino branch that seriously. The label’s prez, Ray Roq, is one of the reasons Q-Tip wrote that “Rule number 4,080.” The label never had distribution with Universal, never paid for studio time and the duo completed an album that will never see the light of day.

Fabolous Thinks I'm An Idiot

Fabolous’ new vid for his new single, "Diamonds," hit screens last week and while I’m impressed by the beat and some of the lyrics the rest just sounds contrived. Check for yourselves below.

Our favorite boricua mogul is at it again. Jennifer Lopez’s new Spanish album, Como Ama Una Mujer is dropping next week on March 27. And just our luck she’s hitting SOHH.com up with five autographed copies of it. See below on how you can get one for your girl, your ma dukes or even for yourself.

Jim Jones Is About His Money, Rich Boy Remix

Earlier this week Jimmy Jones was at it again, damn this dude should have his own reality show. I’d watch. But he actually makes sense in the below quote. Could Jimmy be leaving his caricature behind? I hope not.

Don Omar versus Hector El Father

Not that there’s any comp between Don Omar and a lot of these other reggae ton dudes but why is Hector El Father throwing jabs he can’t back up? I got love for most of Hec’s joints but DO is DO. Even though the song is type old, that “Gangsta Zone (Remix)” is where Hector let off a few and Omar recently responded to it.

Eva Mendes Gets Naked! Seriously!

And once again Eva Mendes outdoes herself. After plastering her fine ass over a lot of U.S. magazines (Maxim, Shape) promoting her Ghost Rider flick, she’s now going overseas. She’s gracefully showing off her hourglass and Cuban buns in Spain’s men’s tome, DT Magazine.

Ivy Queen Makes'em Cry, Thalia Joins Daddy Yankee

Ivy Queen is coming back hard with “Que Lloren,” the first single off her new album, Sentimiento. She was recently filming the video in MI Yayo along with help from some Latino soap actors.

PG_PLN77022342%5B1%5D.jpg

She flew in crazy ass gold digger that is Niurka Marcos along with Sergio Meyer. The video, as does the song is about how Latino men are taught that crying is for pussies. As you and I know, Tego has showed us otherwise. Anyway the video should be out soon because the song is already on radio.

Respeta El DJ: Rob Swift

Like I said on Friday I support all the pillars of hip-hop culture. That being said, DJ extraordinaire Rob Swift is releasing a full-length documentary about his career today. As The Tables Turn is an introspective look at one of the best mixers to ever touch vinyl.

He started filming the doc back in September 2005, right around the time War Games came out. Tables goes beyond showing the skills Rob possesses, ya know like those other boring ass DJ films do. It tracks his rise to hip-hop fame, from his beginnings, his time with the X-Ecutioners to where he is now.

News Flash: Fat Joe Is A Fat F&*%

Leave my dog, alone. Fat Joe is fat. Duh! He’s a big guy and some cats just can’t drop the weight. Now if he starts hanging around Big Pun’s (God bless the dead) girth then he needs an intervention. These pics of him chillin' with his fam in Mexico last week yes aren't easy on the eyes but he do him. He was in Mexico performing at this year's MTV's Spring Break for all the rich kids who can afford a spring break vacation.

Salma Pregnant, Free iTunes Download

So we were a lil’ depressed this weekend. It finally happened. One of the most graceful, most beautiful, successful Latinas, screw that, women in the world is . . . pregnant. Salma Hayek is gonna be the ultimate MILF.

The Media Hates Hip-Hop Culture

I’m down for the all the four corners of hip-hop. I love lyrics, love beats more, my cousin used to b-boy (I couldn’t) and I used to throw up some weak ass ish back in the ‘90s. So it obviously caught my attention when earlier this week Alain "Ket" Maridueña turned himself in for doing graff throughout NYC’s trains and stations. Not that it surprised me that he turned himself in but the way the mainstream media is ignoring his accomplishments other than weapons and drug charges.

Real Men Cry, Ask Tego Calderon

First I gotta give props to Rich L. for dropping this video in the comments yesterday. I haven’t been up-to-date on my Spanish language TV for a minute so thanks for this. Now on to Tego. What more can you say about duke? He’s beyond a class act. He’s as real as you and I.

Dipset Is Over

I mean if J.R. Writer is the lyrical heat of the almighty Dipset, they got problems. I don’t care about albums sales, even though JR’s latest sold around 13,000 its first week, it’s about substance. And this Dominican cat ain’t sayin’ shit.

Biggie + Mary J. + La India = Deemi

My boy, Mack, has been telling me about Deemi for a minute now. He was saying she was this extremely talented boricua singer who was on some straight hood shit. I was like, cool, cool. But once I actually listened it was a wrap. Not that I ever questioned my homie but I wasn’t feeling R&B at the time. Deemi is on some R&B/street-hop steez. Think Mary J. circa early ‘90s but rougher.

She recently released her first single off her Atlantic debut, Soundtrack of My Life, of the same name. Born Tahu Aponte in Bed-Stuy (do or die), BK she’s been through some tough ass times. She became pregnant at 17 by a man who physically abused her.

Williamsburg (the real one not that gentrified ish), Brooklyn MC, Joell Ortiz is working on some heat for the masses. Let’s hope Dre pulls an Eminem and not a Rakim on JO. See below for Joell’s dealing with the good Doctor.

Pt. 1 Joell Ortiz, "Oh shit! It's Dr. Dre"

I recently talked to the lyrical beast that is Joell Ortiz and he dropped some Dr. Dre jewels on me. And when I say beast I mean like of gargantuan proportions. Just wait for Joell’s KOCH joint, The Brick, and you’ll see. Check what he had to say below.

Latina Poets Unite, La Bruja Leads Way

Now I’m not a big fan of spoken word, I gotta admit. I mean, I was rocking my khufi in college yes, but once I graduated and realized I needed a J-O-B it was ova. But I’m always down to support mi gente especially when one of the few poets I can stomach are rocking the mike. La Bruja along with 10 other Latina poets will be spilling their creativity at the Latina Poets Festival 2007 presented by The Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre.

N.O.R.E. Calls Jay-Z A Girl, Omar Cruz New Ish

So like I told y’all before N.O.R.E. left Def Jam and is now looking over several deals. He recently spoke with xxlmag.com on his leaving the famed label and did his best to be respectful. But if he sees a girl he’s gonna call him how he sees it.

“I don’t want to compare them to girls, but at the end of the day when you’re in a relationship with a female and you just feel like it’s heading in the wrong way, it’s up to you to cut it off before you get into some domestic violence or a route that you didn’t want to go,” NO told the site. “So that’s basically what it is. I don’t think we understood each other. There won’t be a N.O.R.E. diss Jay-Z song. There will not be a N.O.R.E. diss L.A. Reid song, ’cause that’s my style. [When] I leave a label, I shit on ‘em. But this time, I’m going to take the grown man approach. I came and asked them for what I want. They could’ve easily said, ‘No.’ I asked to be released and they didn’t fight me or I didn’t have to hire no lawyers and I’m glad at that fact.”

Lil Wayne Gets Down W/ La Raza

You we all know Goya is always supporting our mujeres. I present to you a lil’ homie doing it big, Paula DeAnda. She’s got a buzzing cut “Walk Away (Remember Me)” bubbling now and got Lil’ Wayne to jump on one of her tracks. The 17-year-old Chicana, who plays piano, is resides in Corpus Christi in Texas which is where the late great Selena is from.
