Coming To Your Local Bodega: Joell Ortiz

Joell Ortiz. It ain’t your cousin it’s the BK artist that’s giving Termanology a run for his money as the best new Latino MC. Before he drops his debut on Dr. Dre’s Aftermath (damn, you know he got talent) Joell is going the indie route with his KOCH-backed The Brick (Bodega Chronicles). His first single is called “Hip Hop.”

“I love this album because I made it while I was going through the industry bullshit of trying to get signed and some tough times, personally,” he says. “It’s full of pain and rage and you can hear it. It’s a soundtrack to the hood version of David vs. Goliath. It’s the common man’s music. Industry people, so-called ‘cool guys’ and ‘posers,’ don’t get this music and they never will. It’s not for them. It’s for us.”

Real talk Joell. The Brick features M.O.P., Ras Kass, Noyd, and Stimuli with beats by Alchemist, Showbiz, Fame, and MoSS. It’s out on Feb. 27, 2007.

  • Joell is that dude!! He's a beast, ever since the Kay Slay show that cat's been rippin it up. One thing that I still haven't heard is how he would do a club song or a song entirely about growing up in Cooper Houses and not just 8 bars of pain, even tho the Preemptive Hype Vol 12 had him doing a track for the clubs...but regardless, Joell and Termanalogy are the two illest to come out in a minute whether black, Boricua, white, whatever....them niggas is nice
