So like I said yesterday Calle 13 was the only Spanish-language rap act to receive a nod in the top four Latin Grammy categories (Best New Artist). The one slot they gave us is named Best Urban Music Album. Let’s look at the nominees: Calle 13 and their self-titled debut, Daddy Yankee’s Barrio Fino En Directo, Don Omar’s King of Kings and Wisin Y Yandel’s Pa’l Mundo.
Calle 13 could win but they should eye the BNA award. Dudes are damn artistes, yeah that’s right with the "e" at the end. Residente (the MC) is an art school grad who sports tattoos of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Matisse not Pac or Biggie. Anyway, El Cangri shouldn’t win because it’s a live album with some new songs added on just to ride the original album’s platinum coattails. WYY may have released 44 singles off an album that only had 22 tracks but it doesn’t warrant them a win.

Now, Don Omar is the one cat who should walk off with the award. Forget the effeminate eyebrows, along with Tego and Yankee, he’s championed the genre and his recent release was critically lauded and a fan favorite. Will Omar snatch the award or will Calle 13 jump on that ish like an STD on a tourist during Brazil’s Carnival? Tune in on Nov. 2 at 8PM (Eastern time) on Univision to find out.
