So for the last couple of days the Republicans in Minneapolis have been on stand by because of Hurricane Gustav. I guess they figured they didn't want to host a $50 million party when an unprecedented number of people are fleeing a monster storm. Makes sense to me.Over all I think that scaling down the convention is a super smart move. Not only is it the humane response, but I also think that it makes tactical sense. Because really, who wants to be reminded that the current leader of your party was m.i.a. when a grip load of dead people were floating down a major American city. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Hurricanes don't poll well for Republicans. They are even trying to soften the memory of Katrina by hosting a couple of on air fundraisers. Talk about turning lemons in lemonade!!
At first I thought that Gustav was going to be the final nail in the coffin for McCain's campaign (come on Sarah Palin!?), but then I started looking at the situation a little more objectively. I actually think that the natural disaster gives McCain the perfect opportunity to distance himself from President Bush. After all, McCain wasn't the president in 2005. (At least I think he wasn't. I know some people think that a lot of old white men look the same, but I am pretty sure McCain and Bush aren't the same people.) All McCain has to do is say that he would have handled Katrina differently. I think most voters are smart enough to know that John McCain isn't even close to being as big an a*shole as George Bush.
I also think that the Hurricane Gustav gives the Republicans time to recover from the Democratic Convention and the barrage of attacks that were coming from the media for their unusually confusing VP pick. After all, I am sure the sorcerers on the Right could use a time out to get their sh*t straight. They really seem to be getting their asses kicked these days.
So congratulations Mr Gustav, you've resurrected the Republican party from their death bed.
