Common Stands Up For Rev. Jeremiah Wright

Posted on May 6, 2008 8:24 AM

Common is sick of the drama revolving around controversial pastor Jeremiah Wright. Not only is the Chicago based MC a life long member of Rev. Wright's Trinity United Church of Christ, but on many occasions he has rapped about his support of presidential hopeful Barack Obama. That's why it's no surprise the Common told EW.com that he thinks that the media is going over board during this extended primary season.

Obviously, the media has an agenda," Common said. "I don't follow what the media says. I'm a thinker for myself. And I just encourage people to be objective: When you're watching, use your inner eye and really try to watch the person and see what you think about them. Because you can never really capture a person in the media blitz."

Common's next album, Invincible Summer will be out later this year. And I'm sure he will drop a bar or two about Wright and Obama.

  • Why does the title says he stands up for rev. Jeremiah Wright if Jeremiah Wright isn't mentioned at all. It looks like he standing up for Obama. I know you're just a journalist tryin to get people's attention but be accurate at least.

Note from biko: the video is just filler. Please READ the words.

  • Common is right about people being objective and thinking for themselves. But the harsh reality is that the media has more power over people's thinking than they should. This most certainly is not new either. So being the intellectual person that Rev. Wright can sometimes come off as being, he of all people should have been able to see through the set-up and not get caught up in it. But what's done is done. People can't blame the media for Rev. Wright's decision to take the bait. He got played! and in an ideal world people would be able to seperate him from Obama but in our media dictated society Obama's authenticity has been discredited. Thanks to Rev. Wright's big over emotinal mouth.

  • Did Common forget this is the country that elected G.W.? Twice! People don't think for themselves they get spoon fed information by the media. And the people who actually do research and draw their own conclusions are few and far between. I'm ridin for Obama all the way and I do believe he really has a good chance when Hillary drops out. But Rev. Wright did him dirty by appearing on tv with nation of islam body guards. People who dont know any better already think Obama is Muslim, that didnt help at all. And even if what he said was true in someways, a wise man knows that there is a time and place for everything and now is not the time to criticize and divide. It is the time to uplift and unite!!!

  • I understand the concept of being a "conscious rapper" but yo, if these nigg@s are sooo damn smart why didn't they go become lawyers, doctors, politicians or get educated and that way they could really make difference in our communities??? I think Common is stupid on that quote, how the hell am I supposed to pass judgement on an image they are "trying to aim and market" towards a certain demographic. Just as much as common doesnt follow the media, I don't follow the medium. Ultimately 'the Medium is the message". Common, go read some McLuhan....

  • Bottom Line:

If you sit in someone's church for 15+ years....get married by the man....have the man baptize your seeds...then you mighht fully support or agree with what he's saying.

Obama's a coward! You choose political gain over friendship is foul. Any NEGRO that can't see that is foul also. As far as the 'new nigger' claiming Rev. Wright took the bait....Rev. Wright stood for something. Moreover, he stood up for himself since, they put HIM in the limelight to destroy another nigger campaign. Imma tell ya this...Obama's not to be trusted. Watch and see.

  • I don't always agree with everything the Rev says, but I do know he is saying what people in and out of the Black community believe and have been saying for the past 8+ years. I do feel that Rev. should have packaged and delivered his message differently. He should have been more strategic with his words; perhaps he could have reached more minds rather than alienate and stir up controversy (blown way out of proportion). I mean, shit, a Black president is up for election, Rev. We NEED him and we need to be supportive, careful, and smart about what we are doing to get him where he needs to be.

Yes, Commons word are right on the sweet spot. "We need to encourage people to be objective." Unfortunately this is not a lesson taught to our children (and adults) of voting age. We are taught to follow our community, parents, commercials on TV, People mag and TMZ.

    Gooooo education and goooo Obama!

  • Sorry but this has to be said. You don't just go to church for the pastor. You also go for the people. The community and the spirituality that it embodies.

Obama is committed to the church and not the pastor. Which is fine, I am too (plug: mount moriah baptist church of LA on figueroa, we got a steve harvey hoodie award twice and our pastor is one of the leaders of the christian leadership association).

    @ undocumented dishwasher:
Common is not stupid. You don't have to be a lawyer or a doctor or a teacher in order to make a positive difference in a community.
That shit might work in mexico but in America, there are more options. Don't like it? Go home.

  • Say what you will...Rev Wright did take the bait...These white folks need any excuse to not vote for the black dude and the good Rev is all they needed...

I like Rev Wright a lot...some of what he said upon further revue is a lil shaky but he still remebers the 60's..he still remembers whites only water fountains...he has the right to be bitter..but he doesn't have the right to sabotage the Presidency....Damn he couldn't wait til January 09....

White people don't understand that black peoples prejudice towards them is reactive.....unlike them which is proactive....They do us any kind of way and when we retaliate we're wronng.....Its a double edge sword.....!!

  • As far as Obama turning his back on the pastor, I don't think that is a strike against his character. Obama is trying to make history and change the direction of this country. If he has to cut ties from his past in order to do that, then it is what it is.

There is a much bigger issue!
Besides, if they are truly friends, then Rev will understand that and patch things up once the election is over. That sounds foul, but politicians do that type of stuff all the time - tell you what you wanna hear during the campaign and unleashing their true agenda in the end...

You, just like Rev. Wright and so many other black American's have tunnel vision that doesn't allow you to see the bigger picture. If anyone wants to consider me a 'new nigger' for acknowledging the fact that Rev. Wright's tunnel vision allowed him to be played by the media...then so be it. The manner in wich Rev. Wright chose to take a stand just was not progressive. Now that he's taken a stand, given whitey a piece of his mind, and pointed out the many injustices of white America. Now what?? Are we suppose to be better off now that this is off his chest? are we seriously expecting for those wrongs to be made right? I mean what did he accomplish? Its 2008 and we have been fighting and loosing this battle for way too long. Its time for our stradegy to evolve. Obama's candidacy should be a tell-tale sign to us all that progress can be made with patience, education, diplomacy, and strategic timing. Anger and hatred will only keep us held back....like its been doing for the past 40 or so years.

  • Did Common forget he is part of the media? I agree people need to be objective, but he is hypocritical when he tells us to vote for Obama, isn't he? Isn't that his opinion, he is trying to impose on us? Is that not his agenda?
Media literacy is important, take everything you hear or see with a grain of salt. Try to formulate your own opinions based on facts, not other people's interpretation of the facts.

  • I believe Common's statements apply directly to Obama. Obama's campaign has been fueled by the media. The media has biased toward Obama this whole campaign. Obama is caught up in the media blitz. Do voters really know Obama? Do you know that he's only sponsored and passed two bills since he's been in the U.S. Senate? Do you know the story behind his IL Senate race? The media has given him a free pass. The only reason the Wright issue made it to mainstream media is because they couldn't ignore it anymore. The videos were all over Youtube. They had to deal with it and now they're pretending that the story got too much coverage. That's ridiculous. It troubles me that so many black people are being so careless with their votes. What troubles me more is that Obama is taking advantage of this when he knows that his ethnic background is not as he claims. When mainstream media really throws the book at Sen. Obama, black people are going to look like complete asses. Do the research for yourself. Barack Obama is not the black man he claims to be. Clinton and McCain have their flaws, but at least we know them. We don't know Obama. Where does Obama stand on civil rights? What has he done for black people? What can he do for black people. It seems to me that he's too concerned with everyone liking him that he won't state his real opinion about anything. Why should we trust him to act on any of the things plaguing black people? The reality is that Obama doesn't understand the concerns of Black Americans because he's never lived under the same circumstances and he's never faced the same adversity. Despite what he might have you believe, he did not grow disadvantaged. He had every opportunity that his Hawaiian classmate were given. To vote for him because he's suppose to be black is one of the most ignorant things you can do. Know your candidate. It's so important. What are you gonna do when McCain is president and gas is 7 dollars a gallon? Blacks cannot carry Obama is the general election and the best way to nullify your vote

  • seems that if you need someone else to tell you to think objectively and for yourself that you're 1) probably not thinking objectively because they will either agree if they like common or whoever, or disagree if they dont and 2) aren't thinking for themselves
why do you need someone to tell you how to think?
and honestly, i love common so no disrespect to the man but who gives a fuck what he thinks about the issue? celebs are just people they cant see the future or find the truth anymore than you can
