Here's an example using my beliefs on the Iraq War: both the (mostly) Republicans and the Democrats were wrong for authorizing this war. I was against it from the beginning, even with the common belief that there were WMD's. It was not necessary, nor was it legal under international law. We had Saddam contained. Not to mention the post war planning was poor.

However, I disagree with the Democrats on the current state of the war. Now that our country is in this war, it would be irresponsible and a disaster to leave and have Iraq in tatters (as Kerry said in '04 but now he's "flip flopped" again). Our goal is to have an Iraqi government that has a police force and military capable of taking care of its own problems so that we can leave, and currently we are making good progress in only 5 years (it's a whole nation we're building for god sake). However the Democrats are right in many ways. If the Iraqi leaders don't pull it together, than sooner or later we need to leave. I may come to hold that opinion eventually, but we need to at least give both the Iraqis a chance to be successful.

Well I would say that most of what you listed is opinions that you hold and not facts (although florescent lights do indeed have mercury in them).

You think abortion is murder. Other people do not. Legally a person is not a person until they're born. Otherwise it is pretty much based on belief if a fetus is considered a human being or not. It is because of this moral complexity that it would be better if individuals decided if they themselves wanted to abort their pregnancy instead of the government. Morales are arbitrary (even though it seems that murder and stealing and a select few others go without saying) just because you feel something is moral doesn't mean another person does; furthermore, morals seem to be strongly guided by one's religious beliefs and one of the most important staples to American politics is the separation of church and state, why should laws be passed that limit civil liberties because of other civilians do not agree? If parents don't want their children doing drugs than educate them to the point where they can make an informed decision... If you personally feel that gays shouldn't marry then Fuck You, why don't you not get married? (BTW Im not gay) Who the fuck are you to limit somebody-else's life? What if somebody feels you shouldn't get married? Should their opinions affect your ability to get married? HELL NO!!!!!.... As far as prostitution as long as they are consenting adults isn't it their choice? You raised some interesting points but I think that your whole notion of "beliefs" vs "opinions" is a little off. Beliefs are how many people become politicized in the first place. Personally I have many political "beliefs." For instance, I believe that governments are inherently unjust. Furthermore, I believe that forms of systematic coercion, and structural forms of violence are inherently wrong; which is the basis of any and every state.

Those are obviously beliefs. People could argue at length about the good things some governments do and the horrible things that governments do, but all of these opinions fundamentally lie on beliefs. Furthermore, another belief that I have is that wars are inherently immoral.

From that belief it would logically follow that the war in Iraq should not continue. You argued that the war is already a fact, essentially, and that the US has made this mess so it would be irresponsible to pull troops out. I agree with one point of this. It would be irresponsible to not aid the Iraqis in building their society back, but an occupation is definitely not the way to go about it.

There are many reasons for this. First, it is still completely illegal by international law. If say, China invaded the US and it descended into chaos, China does not have a RIGHT to continue to occupy it, but they have a right to pay reparations and find a way to alleviate the damage done.

Secondly (and this is the most important in my opinion) what the occupying force wants is not what is important. The question is what do the Iraqi people want and that question is hardly asked for clear reasons. Almost every poll taken suggests that a vast majority of Iraqis blame the occupation and the occupiers for the violence (this is no including the Kurds who are a totally different category) and want a withdrawal of the forces. If people here claim to have any pretension of democracy that would be the first and most important thing we would listen to. But its not.

Third, I think the real way to organize a withdrawal would have to be with some form of international consensus. There would probably (and I think probably needs to be strongly emphasized because its possible that that should not even be done in the first place) need to be some minimal form on "peacekeeping" operation. If peacekeepers are accepted by the Iraqi people then they should also decide where they should come from. Lastly the US should fund the whole operation and pay massive reparations back to the Iraqi people and issue a sincere apology (even though thats too little too late) for the mass slaughter they have enabled and participated in.

Lastly I think that your media critique is a little interesting. Conspiracy theory sites, I agree, aren't going to help people get any decent grasp on international affairs. However, the NYT, the Wall Street Journal, Fox, CNN, and all the rest won't either. These corporations don't simply report facts; they omit things that are vastly important for any serious understanding of the world. Elementary logic would deduce a few certain truisms. All of these are huge corporations. In turn, they have corporate interests. These corporations are multi-million dollar industries and are obviously then tied to other corporate and elite interests. Furthermore, the media gets its money from advertisers. It would be striking if these corporations would paint a picture of the world that would harm their personal financial interests. Every now and then something slips through the cracks but it is hardly ever. There was a study done on the NYTs reporting of the Indonesian invasion of East Timor. That study revealed something about the media. As Indonesia's invasion (with complete US financial and diplomatic support), and eventual genocide of the Timorese reached its peak, the stories gradually disappeared from the US press all together. The reasons should be clear.

Lastly your whole attack on socialism makes it rather clear that you don't understand much about it. I personally consider myself an anarchist. But it was clear in 1917 that what Lenin was not installing a socialist government. The first thing he did was destroy all the socialist elements in Russia. But we can debate this another time its a long argument.

Also, as a person with friends on both sides of the political divide, many of "conservative" friends would not label Bush a Reagan conservative, especially with him expanding the size of the government the way he has. Now, I want say something about Brotha Barack. In my opinion, Brotha B is nothing more than the Black Jimmie Carter. And to only vote for him because he's Black is ridiculous. From what little we know about him, he's been voted the most liberal senator for 2007. Now, if he's a liberal, so be it. Shit, Clinton, Kennedy, and Kerry are liberals. But to be THE MOST liberal is a little scary.

I will never understand why Black folks love the Democrats so much. Most of you say Bush and the Repubs don't care about Black folks. But who is it that won't give parents the choice to send their chirrin to the school of their liking? The only choice they give parents in reguards to their chirrin is the choice to give birth or kill them in the woumb. And someone here please tell me what other ethnic group, in a free society, votes primarily for one particular political party, ALL of the time? As far as I know, it's only us. If we as a people want more respect, we can't continue to put all of our eggs into one basket. If we split our votes, each political party will have no other choice but to respect our demands. But if we keep hanging onto the promises of one political party, we'll always be taken for granted and ignored.
