Is Barack Obama Black?

Posted on April 16, 2008 7:56 PM

Yesterday I posted a blog about Republican Geoff Davis calling Barack Obama a "boy." While I thought it was offensive, many people responded to it by saying they thought it wasn't. Some even questioned Obama's blackness.

I personally think that's a stupid thing to say. While his cultural and ethnic background may be different from many African Americans, the truth of the matter is that he is just as much a Black person as any other African American. It's not like he experienced any less racism (either personal or institutional) because his father was from Africa. In fact, the dude made an intentional attempt to embrace his blackness in college. Thus the reason why he goes by Barack and not Barry.

Let's not forget that Blackness is an international identity that reaches to all walks of the globe.

the guy on you other blog post who kept insulting obama probably is a republican who just came on here to start a fight. obama is black and he wants to unite this country.

yeah man cause i'm sick of hearing all this isht oh you aint black if so and so or this and that and this coming mainly from black people in this country it's like you have limitations on what you can do if you black and you swim, skate, play chess, do shakespeare, sail a boat...(you see what I mean) then you aint "black" funny every other race can do whatever the hell they want and still be them but if you black "here" and dont do what the mainstream perception of black people is then you aint black then hell I guess I aint black cause although i ball and listen to hip-hop and R&B I also do a whole rack of things that some black people would call "that white boy isht" be yourself and fuck what people think

matter a fact some "African" Americans are prejudice against other foreign black people cause they aint just like them and i've seen it plenty

The truth of the matter is that Barack is actually more of an African American than the majority of blacks in this country will ever be, whereas his father is actually an African. We as a people seem to forget that we are several generations removed from the mother continent and interbred with numerous other races. Aside from that, one of the most efficient acts resulting from slavery was the complete removal of our cultural identity (and calling a black MAN boy to demean him in front of his own people was one of the greatest tools in that long storied arsenal). We have taken on aspects of almost every other culture in America and meshed them together into a hodgepodge subculture, which in many cases is the cause of our own self loathing and constant self degradation. Simply put, we do it because we know that's how every one else sees us and since we have long since assumed "their" sensibilities and mannerisms it has desensitized us to the seriousness of such comments (perfect example: the Imus incident).

if you're 1% black you're considered black to most white people so yes lol.

Geoff Davis knew what he was doing when he called him "boy". Either way, I think Obama has this election hands down.

So, Obama's half african...doesn't that make him more BLACK then the majority of african americans in the country? I think people question his "blackness" because it's not a stereotypical black person.

your such a retard ass blogger, i hope you fucking find some good material.... all you do is talk obama and his personal life but your punk ass never really discusses the main issues. You waste everyones time you fucking coon

note from biko: all I got to say is: socratic, I practice.

Well, as I have mentioned a few times in this comment section, I am not an Obama supporter, or a supporter of any politician. I just feel it is important to state that bias from the outset. But in regards to your question, I would say Obama is definitely black. I think it is pretty ridiculous to say he isn't. It seems to me, that the fact people can even have a debate on this subject says a lot about race in itself.

For instance, what is black enough or not black enough? Furthermore, what are the defining characteristics and who decides blackness?

I usually argue that race is a pretty fluid subject. It is essentially an imagined creation. There are differences, but the categories either expand or decrease for different reasons. For instance, with "whiteness": Irish, Jews, Italians, were not considered white but they are today. If someone can not be "white" one day then become "white" after a period of time, then what does that really say about whiteness. We have also heard people argue that anyone who isn't white is black. That line of thinking extends blackness to an almost universal realm; engulfing probably 95% of the human species.

I would say the terms actually have more to do with personal decisions and political decisions. That said, if Obama identifies himself as being a black man, then he is such. I don't think it helps trying to question his "blackness". While I don't trust or agree with his politics, I think that this is a silly accusation against him as a person.

Lastly: I missed you on Farai's show. I check for it here and there. I hope you tore it up man. Much respect. Keep doing ya thing.

NO ONE! NO ONE!

Who is black...more accurately, who has even one drop of blood of their African ancestors should ever speak of this again! If you are black and speak utter nonsense you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself! We are a proud people who know all corners of the earth, but still our blood and our flesh, our hearts beat for Africa, even if we should stand as Judas and deny it! Time and water separates us, but ethnically we are ONE! Be proud of where you are, and all that you have come through!

IF YOU EVEN THINK FOR ONE MINUTE THAT OBAMA AINT BLACK ENOUGH, CHECK OUT THE FATTY ON MICHELLE OBAMA...OBAMA LIKES FAT ASSES...HE'S BLACK!

Note from biko: the fact that you as a Ron Paul supporter don't understand why this important let's me real know some stuff homie!

Yet another useless blog post IMO. Seriously, why does it matter if he's Black. If one questions it, let them find out by themselves.

Post something more useful, like a blog about RON PAUL. I can't stress it enough on how ignorant some people STILL are. SOHH has a very nice base to give people a view on who Ron Paul is, yet it's wasted.

I remember watching television, and seeing one gentleman say he will not vote for any Republican due to what G. Bush has done. Yet Ron Paul preaches the opposite of what G. Bush has done for YEARS. Such ignorance is blown around everyone, it's sad.

Ron Paul 2008.

On of my favorite Hip-Hop Quotables:

I'm black!/Even though my skin's kinda light/That means my ancestors was raped by somebody white!

Styles P- "I'm Black"

Okay this white n black thing is beyond me! If thats the case, White people look pink 2 me n black people are brown, caramel, chocolate, all the good shit!! You see this is just stupid!! Is he black enough?! Who gives a flyin fuck?! I'm surprised that the white folks not asking is he white enough?! We classify anybody mixed with black genes black! Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Thurgood Marshall, The Rock(man he Samoan, lol!), Colin Powell, so on n so forth!!! Some white folks wanna be black since it's like that! Sittin in da sun, goin 2 tannin parlors n shit! LMAFO @ 1Thug!!

This is the most niggerish shit I have heard(or read in a long time). I'm a barber so I hear dummies ask the same question. Check this out, the man's father is from Alego, Kenya Africa and his mother is white(so what). That fact alone qualifies him as the blackest and closet lineage to the mother land, while the rest of us has been deluted by decades and centuries of interracial breeding that will probably make him blacker than you.. But that's not my point, I ask the question, because the man is well spoken and appeals to more than the people in "THE HOOD" does that disqualify him as being a viable black man? Ofcourse not, because the cops will be quick to bust his head, regardless of what class, education, and friends he have....like me and you! So, with that said, get some real issues to blog about, and stop wasting our time with that "MONKEY SHIT", you embarassing us with all the sucking-and-jiving,asking these dumb ass questions.

Let homeboy get pulled over in East New York pushing his Benz with some politician jewlery and suits on and we'll find out real quick just how black he is. I'm guessing black enough to get harassed.

Ofcourse not, because the cops will be quick to bust his head, regardless of what class, education, and friends he have....like me and you! ssssuuuuuuuuuurrrreeeeeeeeee lol paranoia!

Would any of you vote for him if he was'nt black? I know I would. We need change and his views on racism alone would make a world of difference in America.

He is damn sure not white. @ Resist I'm curious to know what it is about Obama that you don't "trust" and its not just you but Ive heard a lot of people saying that but they don't really explain what they mean. Like in last nights debate Hillary didn't come out and say that but she did in a round about way. Do you think he is an undercover Muslim or something? Do people think that if he wins he will be like "ha ha fooled you!" and bring Bin Laden in as VP? If its not the Muslim issue is it that people think he is really a republican? I know that there was an issue about him taking a test simulating nuclear war and he hesitated to push the big button or something, I guess that would make me think twice about voting for him but it still wouldnt sway me away from him completely and wasn't that very recent? I haven't made up my mind either way just yet but I guess I will have to in the next few days.

How is Barack a black name u Douche Bag!? Barry is more black!, being black has nothing to do with the race so y u trippin ur boy Barack Obama is not black and Will never be considered black, i bet the nigga dont think he is black!

i just dont like the man something bout him screams fake to me

fAKE AND THEM OTHER TWO CANDIDATES ARE NOT YOU NIGGAS GOT THAT SLAVE MENTALITY GOING ON YOU SELF HATING HOMOS

If he were your doctor, lawyer, teacher, janitor, mechanic, or dentist, would you consider him to be black? If you saw him in a Benz riding through Chicago, would you consider him to be black? Is Akon black? Is Rihanna black? Is Bob Marley black? Is Wyclef black? IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO ANY OF THESE QUESTIONS, THAT SHOULD BE THE END OF THE DISCUSSION! "People think they diss my person by stating I'm darkly pact, I know this so I point at Q-tip and he states 'black is black'" Don't fall into this game people. We know Barack is black. His wife is black, his kids are black, his daddy is black, and have you seen him on the basketball court???? Brotherman is black!

@Yamammy

The questions you raised were all pertinent but my position is actually far off from what you were expecting. Well first the idea of him being a Muslim or what not I think is a political distraction. He is clearly not a Muslim and if he were it would not matter to me one way or another. Muslim, atheist, Christian, Catholic, Jewish, etc. doesn't make me judge a person in any way whatsoever.

It seems that you are guessing he is not hawkish enough for my liking, which is the real crux of what you were insinuating. Well first off, I should state that I don't agree with the political situation in this country on face value. I think the whole notion of having a president is too autocratic to begin with, let alone "policymakers," "senators," "congressmen," etc. I would like to see a real radical transformation in the society and the world which these normal politicians can't bring and rather intentionally try to stifle. In that regard, I believe fully supporting any politician is delusional. Real "change" -- to throw around Obama's catch phraw -- derives from social movements, resistance, and directly democratic groups, not politicians.

But then in regards to his statements, if we take them at face value, Obama isn't really offering anything that different. He said in Iraq he will pull out the "combat troops," which means the majority of troops will stay put. Last night he said all options are on the table with Iran (a euphamism for a nuclear assualt) which is horrible. He criticized Carter for even TALKING to Hamas. He didn't condemn Colombia's attack on Ecuador, he continually says that Chavez is a "problem."

So foreign policy wise he has the same policy as the hawks; just slightly more benign. He even has Brzezinski as one of his chief foreign policy advisors, which says enough for me.

Domestically he wants to alleviate some of the economic collapse that is coming. People can derive whatever they choose from this, but the way I see it he is really talking about putting a band aid on a gunshot wound. What really needs to change is a total revampment of the monetary and value systems, and judgments that have been imposed on the world through imperialism.

It is definitely true that he will not be as brutal as McCain or Hillary, but I just don't think we should delude ourselves from political calls for "change" and "hope." They are meaningless coming from politicians. And lastly, the man is a black man. : )

Well I guess to some people if your not killing people or if your pants fit your waist and your not conducting yourself in a ignorant manner your not black!...this just in there is a lot of smart black people!!

In case you all missed it *RESIST* is a communist.

Yes, Barack is considered black in document form. In reality he is a mixed individual, as many many people are today. Nothing wrong with that because in about 100 years a 100% black person will cease to exist or be sparse in the earths population.

Hey Let's not forget he is half white! Don't cheat us white folk out of a decent prez by tryin to hogg him! haha

LET ME SUM THIS UP REAL FAST DURING THE TIME OUR PEOPLE WERE SLAVES THE WOMAN WERE RAPE ALL THE TIME SO MY QUESTION IS "ARE ANY BLACK AMERICANS REALLY BLACK" ! YES

Alternate theory to add to blazin215's post.

Adam and Eve were either an interacial couple as we know it today or they were both black.

Think about it.

We are all black. If we have even a little African heritability (and we all do), we could all be considered "part African". Even though our forefathers raped slaves and changed names on documents, this is true. Check out the documentary on PBS. So let's become color blind now shall we? This would be over already if more Americans were. He will become "colorless" after he is elected. The media is sensationalizing the color of his skin like they do to Tiger only when he loses a tournament. The media is biggotted.
