I don't care which side you're for, you have to admit that the media is taking Barack's "bitter" comment way too far. All weekend cable news shows have been running back to back segments on whether Barack was justified for saying:
"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
Of course it didn't help that both HRC and John McCain continued to fan the flames.
But my thing is that Barack is right. Americans are bitter. People of all racial and class backgrounds are pissed off right now. How are we ever going to be able to fix any of our country's problems if we can't talk openly and honestly about whats going on?
That's why I give Barack props for not backing down from his statement. Most politicians would have backed it up from those comments faster than a dancer at Strokers.
Biko... Here is why poeple are bitter in America... They have systematicly destroyed the family structure of lower class American, "systematicly"(see eugenics).. They have dumbed America down by various media outlets who are all owned by the same coporations, whether the be left or right wing networks... The politicians are all apart of some secret society, or practice witchcraft and occultism in various forms...So then to make it seem like its all not happening., They Make Obama's "bitter" comment seem like a real pressing issue in America.... 6 billion dollars a day we borrow from china Biko.... We are trillions of dollars in debt.... In 5 years 1 out of 3 black males will be in the pen.. if this continues, by 2020 18 million lack males will be incarcerated.... Barack hasn't said shit about that... Ron Paul, who is a racist bastard, even said he would free ALL non violent drug offenders. Barack and his wife are socialists... FuCk socialism ya herd, I'm a freeman..... This country is headed towards slavery... This world is headed towards slavery... The one world regime is coming.... thats why it's time for revolution playa. you know it..
I think its a non-issue and Hillary, McBush, the media, and whoever else is blowing this ALL the way out of portportion is REALLY reachin'. I think its finally setting in that the next president is gonna be black lol.
Conspiracy theoristically speaking, Brotha Barack has just handed John McCain the presidency. Up to this point, Brotha Barack could have broke the neck of a WHITE bunny, on national TV, on Easter Sunday, and still would have been voted president. Brotha Barack could have admitted to cheating on his wife with an albino hormaphrodite and he still would have been voted president. Brotha Barack could have admitted to the world that he helped to stain Monica's blue dress and he still would have been voted president.
But with his wife admitting that she's now proud of this country (because her husband might be the Dem. nominee), with Rev. Wright still running his mouth, and now insulting MILLIONS of Americans, he's over.
I'm saying this because it seems like Brotha Barack and his people are in self-destruct mode. Conspiracy theoristically speaking of course.
^^ cosign.
Real talk Bro. Enoch, however one must come to the realization that no US president is going to do anything for anyone. Just sit back and be happy it's finally going to be a dark face. As you know the revolution won't be televised. This Obama thing definately isn't it.
We The Greatgrand Nation[USA] must deny the Clinton Dynasty and some devisve and cooperate Media Like [FOX and CNN] to malign and derailed Obamas positive and honest attempt the serious and substantial problems facing our country. It Sad, tragic. and unfrotunate. Washington won't change and neither the psychological partison terrorism form these media sources for cooperate greed
they're taking this comment way too far he's only speaking the truth. the only reason that McCain and hillary is grasping on to this for dear life is because they have nothing else on him. McCain doesn't want to run against Obama because hillary is easier to beat.
Nah homey, I aint gonna sit back and be happy because a black slave master has been chosen to beat me!! hahaa.... Obama wants more troops in ahfganistan and pakistan, he is a socialist, do you hear the shit him and his wife talk about in regards to the economy? They are african american marxists!!! WTF?!! Every highschool graduate will be forced into a government job, if this man hits office... That is facism dawg.. Hitler did the same shit!!!!!!! Obama seems to hold the sameviews of socialism, communism, facism, and oppression right along with man we love ta hate... BUSH!!!!! Obama is nothing more than a pawn.... He is just the same as all the rest of these politicians, he just disguses it with his charisma and false speeches of change..... How can we change when he holds the same views as his opponents.. He shares the same views with those who oppress humanity... All for the futherance of a globalized government.... don't be decieved.... this shit aint rocket science lil homey... Wake up and see whats really poppin... Ya'll kill me with this conspiracy theory shit folk... all you gotta do, is look into things a little deeper, and you will see whats really goin on.... I guess ignorance is bliss tho..
ABC NEWS REPORT
Aug. 1, 2007
In a strikingly bold speech about terrorism Wednesday, Democratic presidential candidate Illinois Sen. Barack Obama called not only for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, but a redeployment of troops into Afghanistan and even Pakistan with or without the permission of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.
"I understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges," Obama said, "but let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al Qaeda leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will."
Hmmmmm... Attacking something without permission.... Sounds familiar.... Like Bush maybe when he attacked Ahfganistan..... He aint bringin the troops home you slaves, he re-deploying them to Pakistan you idiots!!!! a War on Terror, War on Drugs, War on everything that aint like them.... Kill all towel heads and thugs, right? This nigga is a wolf in sheeps clothing.. We have substantial intelligence?! NIGGA WHAT!! he sound just like bush!!!
holla back
What Barack said was the TRUTH! I am from the westside of Chicago, and from the ghetto of the westside to the ghetto of the southside the poverty is TERRIBLE!
And unfortunatley this is true for most urban areas across the nation. There have been 23 Chicago high school students mudered since classes started in 9/2007, and now the total is up to 24, because a 16 year-old male was found dead in a alley on the southside at 7:00 a.m. this morning.
Most of our young people feel they are nothing more than what they see daily, people selling drugs on the corner, dophines shooting up in broad daylight while the kids are walking to school!, and dead bodies laying in the gutter! Day after Day.......
Where is there hope?! Why in the hell! wouldn't we have a generation of bitter CHILDREN AND ADULTS!!!!
WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The media is not taking the statements too far they are taking the statements too far in the wrong direction. Biko if you want people to sympathize with the candidate you clearly endorse than you should realize that the media has done the same to McCain (the 100 year war speech). Obama is correct that those jobs were lost, but I don't think he is aware to why. Midwestern cities especially in the case of Detroit suffer from loss of jobs because industries are moving; the industries are moving because of the extremely high taxes the companies need to pay to be in those states. The governments in a bunch of midwestern states fucked themselves with socialist reformations. It is no wonder that car companies have moved south for cheap labor, immigrants will work for cheaper (even legal ones) and to run the automotive industry in the south cost them a whole lot less than to run it in Michigan. Im not saying it is morale but from a strictly logical point of view midwestern governments have screwed themselves out of jobs and tax revenue.
It seems evident that this is a clear consequence to the end of the trickle down theory/laffer curve/ reaganomics. If the taxes in Michigan (for example) weren't so high, it would provide incentives for the Automobile industry to remain there in its entirety. You might not agree with Reagan [and he did a bunch that I don't agree with like crack's longer prison sentence (but even that can be explained in a way that isn't racist) and his slow reaction to the AIDS epidemic] but his laissez faire approach to economics shows that it was more effective than the economy since then. It is simple LESS TAXES (for everyone)>>>> MORE INVESTMENT (which is still taxed) >>>>MORE TAX REVENUE & JOBS (because the investments lead to jobs and even-though there is a lower tax rate the sheer amount of investment leads to higher revenue). But it seems Democratic politicians in the midwest (I say democratic politicians because they are generally elected in the midwest and generally raise taxes) have brought about their entire region's industrial downfall. If politicians had sense they would lower taxes in the midwest.
Reaganomics/trickle down theory don't necessarily always work, sometimes the opposite in the form of Keynesian economics is the answer like in the case of FDR. We were caught in the depression and we had entered WWII, if the government had not intervened as much as they did during this time, not only would the economy stayed in the toilet, but the war effort would have been weakened also.
With the situation today, even though there is a war going on the Keynesian approach to the economy is too radical... our industries are not focussed on helping with the war effort our whole automotive industry is not donating and working for the country. Another reason the Keynesian approach worked was because not all the people were competing for jobs, because a large fraction of the population was fighting in the war leaving massive amounts of open industrial jobs. Today there is no draft (I am extremely grateful of that) and the competition for industrial jobs is fierce and between large sums of people.
Media is making the wrong deal about Obama's statements, they should not be shocked by what he is saying because the media should have portrayed the truth already; people need to ask why? how can it change? what can we do instead?
I hate to attack Obama (because he was right to bring up the issue) but the answer is not hope without logic (isn't that faith and didn't he say not too cling to religion?)! The answer sure as hell is not higher taxes! Ridding the problems starts with the same thing that everything starts with...MONEY! Incentives needed to be provided so that industries don't flee, how do you think cities get certain sports teams to come? The city helps build stadiums, the city has a large market, etc. The facts are cities, states, countries.... they are all at competition with each other, that is human nature. Capitalism is beautiful in the fact that it showcases human nature and the spirit of competition... well midwestern governments were given the opportunity because a lot of industries were formed there, but the governments felt entitled and greedy and lost the competition for the industries and everything that comes with them like the jobs they provided. The people shouldn't be pissed at the industrial complex (they need to realize that they cannot be forced just as you can't be forced to stay at one certain job) the people need to be pissed at their governments misrepresenting their interests and come election time take more time to learn about the local issues and candidates. Change starts at the local level and that is where the people have the most control.
note from biko
Before I start, let me ask you to give yourself a better name. Asdf is cool if it is somehow related to your real name or pen name but I am not inspired by it. Especially because you make pretty smart comments on a regular basis.
but I love this type of discourse. I am from Milwaukee so I feel part of what you are saying. Have you read Thomas Segrue's Origins of the Urban Crisis? I think that he gives his readers a pretty insightful look into Detroit's struggles. I think it's a lot more complicated that you highlight here.
First None of these cities were ran by socialist governments. The last socialist mayor in a major city was in Milwaukee in 1960. (Frank Ziedler
Second I think Detroit, like Pittsburgh, Gary and my city of Milwaukee highlight how blue collar il workers have become obsolete in an idea based economy. I agree that many of the major unions did not see the writing on the wall in the mid twentieth century and did not learn to adapt to the growing influence of international competition. With that being said. if there weren't unions most of us would still be working 80 work weeks, would have no health insurance, and would have children working side by side with us in the work place.
Third, your argument sounds like it was ripped out of the pages of Alan Greenspans recent autobiography.
While Greenspan and his mentor Arthur Burns argue that Kenysian thought is too radical, rarely do folks highlight how the American government has been subsidizing and bailing out American coorporations for the last 60 years. America's economy has never been free and open. The problem is that America economy has been ruined by greedy CEOs who make millions and millions of dollars.
Fourth, Kenysian based economies work fine in Western Europe. The Euro is way stronger than dollar. ( and I dont want to hear about homogenous populations etc.)
Before I attempt to explain myself I would like to try to make you understand about what I feel a name is; a name is nothing but a way to differentiate one person from another... no name should have significance; just because a person called him/herself The Enlightened One does not necessarily make them enlightened, just because one calls him/herself The Truth doesn't mean he/she speaks it. One of the things I preach about (especially about the presidential campaign) is to look past the name, past the gender, and past the ethnicity. What I call myself has no importance, the importance lies in the messages. So if you wouldn't mind I would like to continue to refer to myself as asdf.
First I did not say socialist governments, I said socialist reforms. I don't think all socialist reforms are bad, but what I meant were social economic reforms (which are not all bad). I feel the problem is and was higher taxes in those regions (which are a result of socialist reforms).
Second, I didn't not by any means try to demonize unions and I apologize if you inferred it that way. I think unions are an extreme good to the world, even if it is a socialist ideal unions are pivotal in the substance of a Capitalist economy. Samuel Gompers is a great example of a union leader who helped sustain American Capitalism. I by no means tried to undermine the importance of unions. I'm not really sure where I wrote about unions but if I had anything bad to say about unions; it would be that there have been unions in the past and present (not all or even most) that have been corrupt and greed and possibly asked for too much because the leaders could not share the wealth with the rest of the union.
Third, I did not rip the argument because I have never read Greenspan's autobiography. The arguments I attempted to make were based solely on books I have read about economics with no biases and only facts. I realize that greedy CEO's are also at fault but they don't represent the people. Corporations are entities that really have a rather mutual relationship with the people. If the people are suffering economically, then the corporations probably will too. The same goes for if the people are prospering. Subsidizing, although not always right, is sometimes a necessity. If the government doesn't pay some farmers to grow certain crops, than the value of the crop goes down and the farmers lose money. If the farmers' jobs lose them money then there is no longer a farming industry. True our economy has never been completely free, and that is a good thing. If our economy were completely free it would allow room for people to manipulate the economy so that the capitalist dream was incapable. Monopolies, interlocking directories, etc. cause the capitalist system to collapse on itself. Marx said that the workers would lead the revolution against capitalism, but America provides limitations to its capitalism so that there will be no revolution. The reason that England's revolution was so much less violent than France's was because Parliament slowly and methodically installed reforms while the French were too extreme. Ideally anarchy or communism would be the best governments, but that would be if humans were robots. People are different, people have flaws; our tweaked capitalism is personally what I believe is the most practical system. Back to the governments bailing out corporations, the corporations are bailed out because if the corporation goes bankrupt then the jobs it offered are eliminated and the people who are supposedly represented by the government have drawn the short stick. The government bails out corporations not just because they are greedy, but also because it is probably what is best for the people they represent.
Fourth, I don't think that Kenysian economics are the reason for the strength of the Euro. The dollar is weak partly because we are in war. Another reason for the strength of the Euro is the fact that the printing of Euro's is not up to one country but a group of them. If America couldn't just print money when they felt then the dollar would be a much more rare and valuable commodity. Anybody who tries to explain the strength of the Euro with homogenous populations hasn't thought through their explanation because the EU is a multi-national multi-cultural union. Another possibility is the fact that the governments intervention on the economies cause a regulation of the value of the currency involved. Truthfully thats the best I can explain without research into the subject. But in our hemisphere in recent history, when former president Carter (who I personally feel is the worst president of all time even worst than Bush) tried to instill his economic plan, it led to a very high unemployment rate.
P.S. Another reason I like to use this name is that it is basic and the arguments had on the blog are generally simplified, so it is just the representation of how we are simplifying much more complicated issues.
Austrian economics are the key... But we are too far gone to even talk about economics right now... We are fighting against wicked powers that be folk... The implictions are more than just physical homey.. They're spiritual..
FOX News is the reason why America is now the joke.
Calling Obama an elitest is funny.
Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Karl Rove are rich people.
They had both parents and use that privilage to make it.
Obama had the hard way, and then some!
Why hate the black guy!
Cause the truth hurts!
That's why he has more money, more supporters, more viewers and better looks than the 60 year old woman and 72 year old man!
I THINK HILLARY CLINTON IS A SNAKE..SHES A SNEAKY BITCH! SHE WANTS BARACK TO SAY SOMETHING NEGATIVE SO SHE CAN TAKE THAT 1 LIL INFO HE SAY THATS NEGATIVE AND BLOWS IT ALL OUT OF PROPORTION TO THE MEDIA TO GET THEM TO TURN ON BARACK..SHES A LIAR,AN UNDER COVER RACIST AND WILL DO AND SAY ANYTHING JUST TO KEEP A BLACK MAN FROM RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT..LOOK HOW SHE CARRY HERSELF DURING THIS RACE..SHE ALWAYS GET CAUGHT UP IN A LIE AND END UP LOOKING STUPID....I THINK BARACK SHOULDNT FALL FOR HER STUPIDITY...HE SHOULD FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE BUT AT HER OWN GAME....BARACK IS A SMART MAN ...USE YOUR HEAD ,,BEAT HER AT HER OWN GAME AND SO SHE CAN LOOK STUPID AT THE END ..AND DONT FEEL PITTY FOR HER EITHER,CUZ WHILE U HOLLARING AND SCREAMING SHES IN THE BAR GUZZLING DOWN BEERS AND CELEBRATING..HER VICTORY THAT U MIGHT JUST LOST PENNS VOTE...BEAT THIS HOE AT HER OWN GAME ..
Im a liitle bitter. Ever since Bush has been president, everything has been downhill. In the first couple of years in his term gas was like $1.40. Now it's like $3.44 and rising. Can't be goin to war wit the people that own the oil. You bitin' the hand that feeds you. That gets me bitter.
Like every other of your post, just call someone who you dont aggree with (dont understand) a racist and be done with it.
THE TRUTH HURTS IF YOU SCARED TAKE YA BITCH AZZ 2 CHURCH.
My opinion might not matter to some, but we are facing a similar crisis here in South Africa. We have a "powerful" presidential candidate that faces multiple charges of fraud, money laundering and just won a rape charge. The gas prices are a global concerne because they are rising everywhere. Our outgoing president was voted out of office in December last year and now he's pressing the Nationa Prosecution and the Scorpions (equivalent of the FEDS) to go against the "alleged fraudster" who is in an obvious position of taking over as president.Politicians are all SNAKES and can't be trusted, especially with our futures and those of our children. The best thing to do is vote for someone that suites your needs and beliefs (at the moment) hoping they will keep their campagne promises, because they are all liars!!!PEACE!!
the reason this statement has struck a cord is because the truth hurts. if it wasn't true it wouldn't matter.
ps ASDF aka time on hands needs to get a job.
Obama has to realize that what he does is magnitized because of his color. However when it comes to politics everything gets magnatized times 1000, but being black on top of it battling for a title like the president this isn't good for him. I said all along there will a republican president next. It a complex issue to explain but the norm will prevail, and that is a white president. Those sarcastic, and insensitive comments that imply the nation doesn't know what their doing will hurt him. This election isn't about politics though it will be used to hurt each candidate.
Barak - Black Candidate
Hillary - White Female Candidate
McCain - White male candidate
Here is where the shovenists, and prejudice come out. Votes will be swayed because there will be some Democrats dont' want a female, or black male as president, so McCain will gain some vote there. We are the minority, so Barak will have to steal some white votes, but the problem is that most of those white voteers are located in urban communities which all go under one county which counts as one. Atlanta will just account for one county, and the rest of the state will go republican.
Obama if he is the candidate will win the popular vote, not the electoral vote. Why because blacks are too concentrated.
See what you naysayers fail to see is that Obama spoke the truth, even the white folks he's speaking on know its the truth, i think in the general election he will prevail, McSame will be painted as a BUSH puppet and will LOSE, Trust me people get ready for your first black president, So no more excuses NIGGAS!!!!
Obama is going to win and that's that. I was a Hilary Clinton supporter until I found out she was in favor of the war. Obama was against it from the beginning, word. We have spent over 500 billion dollars on a war when there are not even no jobs out here in America. I went to college in Texas from 1998-2002, let me tell you'll something if you don't know. George Bush does not give a fuck about Black people, like for real. He built more prisons in Texas than schools and you're guilty until proven innocent out there. Did you know about 46 black men getting arrested and convicted for drug crimes they didn't commit. This was in 1999 in Tulia, TX. They were released in 2004, Bush did not pardon them. John singleton is making a movie based on this situation due out in 2009. Barack Obama will have this country out of debt by about 2010. We need Bush the Fuck Outta Here, if you like Bush. Kill Ya Self, Word
Sceeyoo
I'm so tired........had Hilary said the exact same words, they, (being the media) would still be trying to break Obama down. I don't feel they've accomplished that, but as Tupac so eloquently put it...."the media is full of dirty tricks". Peace
ASDF nigga you are a Marxists duke... Anarchy or communism? Your an educated fool cuzz... Look what communism did to russia, look at the evil that communism grows into you nimrod worshipper.. You sit here and write these story book long explanations, and you sound stupid.... Communism? Who do you work for homey?
DAM ERYONE IS SO SENSITIVE IN AMERICA NOW SOEM THING NEED TO BE TALKED ABOUT LIKE RACE AND ECONOMICS AND EDUCATION AND NOT JUST WAR
VOTE OBAMA
WWW.MYSPACE.COM/THAGRINDHAOLIC
PEEP THA NEW TRACK
"MENTAL RELAXATION"
Hillary the best candidate, end of story ! Obama Supporters go kill yourselves!
The funny shit is when they put a serious discussion subject up for a bunch of ignorant folks to discuss. There are a few bright heads leving comments but the majority of the posters on here are talking out of their a$$. All I'm going to say right now is that Obama made those comments because thats how he felt. Pay attention to what he says because he never really takes a definitive stand against anything. His points are all things that noone disagrees with. Its like stepping to the podium and saying "Puppies are cute." Whos going to disagree? Theres racism still? You dont say? Hmmmm.... Everybody is discriminatory to a point against somebody or something based on past experience. Only when people start seeing past the color of skin and other physical traits will that shallow, ignorant discrimination end. The labels that we all put on ourselves (i.e. I'm mexican, I'm white, I'm black) are the tinder that keeps the burning flame of racism going. Oh yeah and just so no one forgets OBAMA'S HALF WHITE!!!!!
P.S. Spellcheck is your friend, use it, learn it, love it
Oh shut up..If it was HRC y'all would be like why did she say that. Only when this person says it, oh its okay. He just made a mistake. Well HRC supporters like me said that and y'all jump on our butt. And now that he is getting a little heat y'all want people to back down. What do y'all want to be a little b%*@?
SOHH QUIT BEING BIASED!
THATS NOT THE DEMS THING, ITS THE GOPs.
Sometimes I jsut feel like leaving this counrty.
Deep down inside these old white men can't stand to see a black man make it this far. They are using whatever they can againstObama, but it won't stop the movement. Mccain is cool, but Obama will tear his ass up in the eleections. Obama and hillary as a team is unbeatable. My dream will come true free healthcare and education!! an end to this crappy war, and less military spending so that we can use that money to better this country You conservatives and republicans had your time and look what happen. let me ask you a question. republicans always want to increase the military and cut taxes. Who da f**k is going to pay for the increased military, oh yea, cut the education money so that americans become dumber and just a bunch of careless zombies. it's not going to happen. And um to all these people saying obama is unamerican...when did it become a crime to criticize your country?
Here is from my boy Anderson Cooper---
The full story behind Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s 9/11 sermon
Posted: 10:09 AM ET
Editor’s note: CNN Contributor Roland Martin has listened to several of the sermons of Rev. Jeremiah Wright from Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Portions of the sermons have been excerpted in recent stories.
As this whole sordid episode regarding the sermons of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright has played out over the last week, I wanted to understand what he ACTUALLY said in this speech. I’ve been saying all week on CNN that context is important, and I just wanted to know what the heck is going on.
I have now actually listened to the sermon Rev. Wright gave after September 11 titled, “The Day of Jerusalem’s Fall.†It was delivered on Sept. 16, 2001.
One of the most controversial statements in this sermon was when he mentioned “chickens coming home to roost.†He was actually quoting Edward Peck, former U.S. Ambassador to Iraq and deputy director of President Reagan’s terrorism task force, who was speaking on FOX News. That’s what he told the congregation.
He was quoting Peck as saying that America’s foreign policy has put the nation in peril:
“I heard Ambassador Peck on an interview yesterday did anybody else see or hear him? He was on FOX News, this is a white man, and he was upsetting the FOX News commentators to no end, he pointed out, a white man, an ambassador, he pointed out that what Malcolm X said when he was silenced by Elijah Mohammad was in fact true, he said Americas chickens, are coming home to roost.â€
“We took this country by terror away from the Sioux, the Apache, Arikara, the Comanche, the Arapaho, the Navajo. Terrorism.
“We took Africans away from their country to build our way of ease and kept them enslaved and living in fear. Terrorism.
“We bombed Grenada and killed innocent civilians, babies, non-military personnel.
“We bombed the black civilian community of Panama with stealth bombers and killed unarmed teenage and toddlers, pregnant mothers and hard working fathers.
“We bombed Qaddafi’s home, and killed his child. Blessed are they who bash your children’s head against the rock.
“We bombed Iraq. We killed unarmed civilians trying to make a living. We bombed a plant in Sudan to pay back for the attack on our embassy, killed hundreds of hard working people, mothers and fathers who left home to go that day not knowing that they’d never get back home.
“We bombed Hiroshima. We bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye.
“Kids playing in the playground. Mothers picking up children after school. Civilians, not soldiers, people just trying to make it day by day.
“We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff that we have done overseas is now brought right back into our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.
“Violence begets violence. Hatred begets hatred. And terrorism begets terrorism. A white ambassador said that y’all, not a black militant. Not a reverend who preaches about racism. An ambassador whose eyes are wide open and who is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice upon which we are now poised. The ambassador said the people we have wounded don’t have the military capability we have. But they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them. And we need to come to grips with that.â€
He went on to describe seeing the photos of the aftermath of 9/11 because he was in Newark, N.J., when the planes struck. After turning on the TV and seeing the second plane slam into one of the twin towers, he spoke passionately about what if you never got a chance to say hello to your family again.
“What is the state of your family?†he asked.
And then he told his congregation that he loved them and asked the church to tell each other they loved themselves.
His sermon thesis:
1. This is a time for self-examination of ourselves and our families.
2. This is a time for social transformation (then he went on to say they won’t put me on PBS or national cable for what I’m about to say. Talk about prophetic!)
“We have got to change the way we have been doing things as a society,†he said.
Wright then said we can’t stop messing over people and thinking they can’t touch us. He said we may need to declare war on racism, injustice, and greed, instead of war on other countries.
“Maybe we need to declare war on AIDS. In five minutes the Congress found $40 billion to rebuild New York and the families that died in sudden death, do you think we can find the money to make medicine available for people who are dying a slow death? Maybe we need to declare war on the nation’s healthcare system that leaves the nation’s poor with no health coverage? Maybe we need to declare war on the mishandled educational system and provide quality education for everybody, every citizen, based on their ability to learn, not their ability to pay. This is a time for social transformation.â€
3. This is time to tell God thank you for all that he has provided and that he gave him and others another chance to do His will.
By the way, nowhere in this sermon did he said “God damn America.†I’m not sure which sermon that came from.
This doesn’t explain anything away, nor does it absolve Wright of using the N-word, but what it does do is add an accurate perspective to this conversation.
The point that I have always made as a journalist is that our job is to seek the truth, and not the partial truth.
I am also listening to the other sermons delivered by Rev. Wright that have been the subject of controversy.
And let me be clear: Where I believe he was wrong and not justified in what he said based upon the facts, I will say so. But where the facts support his argument, that will also be said.
So stay tuned.
Yet again the unpleasantness of campaigning for political office. The media will take anything out of context for sensationalism.
I'm not an Obama supporter, but I believe he spoke the truth-- people are bitter and many have a hard time hearing and admitting the truth.
But what a small price to pay (mud slinging) when the ultimate goal is a Democratic President replacing Bush.
ENOCH you misinterpreted me, I am not a marxist. I said that ideally communism or anarchy would be the best, but in reality they aren't. I am a full supporter of America's doctored capitalism, and in reality I feel there is no better system. So I said that in a utopian world anarchy and communism would work, where people were all equal and didn't need laws and police to structure society. However, that will NEVER happen, people have flaws, and people are different, both those systems are impractical. By the way, if you want to go into details Russia wasn't a real communist country, both in the way it was run, and the simple fact that the revolution was not one of the workers but politicians. I do not know how you could classify me as anything other than capitalist.
I have a Barack question that no one seems to want to answer. Anyone here care to try. If you spam my site I'll just delete it, if you wish to give an honest answer I'll leave it.
