[Yesterday] Gen. David H. Petraeus, refused under persistent questioning from Senate Democrats to say under what conditions he would favor new troop reductions, adding that he would not take the matter up until 45 days after a current drawdown is complete in July. His recommendation would leave just under 140,000 American troops in Iraq well into the fall.
I've gotten in trouble in the past for saying things like this, but I really believe that most folks that self-identify with the Hip-Hop generation don't give a f##k about what's going on in the war. Part of it is that we are so caught up in the drama in our neighborhoods that we haven't slowed down enough to pay attention. But I also think that a big reason why there isn't a lot of anti-war sentiment in our communities is because most Hip-Hop cats are so addicted to the brainwash bullsh*t that they get from MTV, BET etc., that they aren't even conscious of what's going on around them.
It's a shame too. The war is costing the American tax payers twelve BILLION dollars a month. A lot of that money could be going to fix our communities!!
*Shouts out to all the folks that do care though. There are too many of you to mention. Keep doing your thing!!!!
I care that there are so many of our men and women dieing in a war that is based on the wealthy getting wealthier. Meanwhile, I got to pay damn near 5 dollars for a gallon of gas. I drive a damn Saturn, its should not take $50 to fill my tank...WTF!?!!! Everytime Bush asks for BILLIONS of dollars, congress is just forking that shyt over like its chump change then wonder why we are in a damn recession. I can not wait for his azz to get out of office so Barack can get in there and clean house.
I don't care about the war, but i do care about the gas prices being so high. I drive a Yukon it's take about $85 here in New Jersey to fill up with regular.
I strongly agree with that right there fam!! It's only cuz on the news, all we get is bad shit and negative stories.. I think if that was slowed down, maybe our community can focus more on the world's problems. Shit I am well aware of what's going on by the constant rise in everything..I feel this whole war is propaganda for Bush and if America can start TELLING THE TRUTH-THE WHOLE TRUTH!! Maybe we can then respond and truthfully be in tune cuz it gotta start from somewhere right?
Shit I been sayin this forever. shit just to fill up from halfway it cost me 40 fuckin dollars. Its a grand marquise tho. but fuck that it use to b 30 to fill up. bush fucked up the economy.
I do not like the war, I do not like that most my countires leaders does not car about anything but funding the war, and not dealing with the real issues of war. I car about the war on iraq only because of how it is tearing this counrty apart and costing us tax payers alot of money.
How can we give a shit, we livin just like the Iraqis. So wut we different because we can eat Mcdonalds everyday, b please urban terrorism, government fuckin us over, brutal dictator, rogue police. We in our own Iraq already where you been?????????
If I said it once, Imma say it 10,000 more times; Big ups to Brotha Biko for offering topics that count instead of discussing shit like if ODB was murdered by the Skull & Bones or if he really died from swollowing a condom filled with cocaine.
Well, I do care about the troops. WAR is horrible. And I'm one who believes that we should have dealt with SODAMN INSANE differently. But, there are thousands of troops who sighned up well after Sept. 11. And the vast majority of them knew that military life would be more dangerous. Since they are there, they should be given all resources necessary to finish the job and leave. I also think that the people of Iraq should start to use their own oil revenues to rebuild their country. I mean, this isn't Germany or Japan. We had to rebuild those countries. Iraq is in a stable enough position to at least start to pay us back.
And as far as gasoline goes, the shit starts right here in America. We MUST be able to drill for oil in the coast of Florida, the Pacific, and Alaska. We also need to reward PRIVATE companies who come up with REASONABLE alternative sources of energy. We MUST build more oil refineries. And we MUST build more nuclear facilities.....France is powered by nuclear energy....why can't we be?
note from biko: thanks for the love. but the comments really power this blog. keep posting and telling your friends about it.
There's a war in Iraq? If you can call it that....it's based on a lie, whatever you call it. I don't see any headlines about Iraq troops being killed or captured. Who is the US fighting against? They can't get Bush and his cabinet of liars out of the White House fast enough. My support is with the troops, but I definitely do not support the so called war.
I want to address Trademark, then generally everyone else's comments, and then the main topic post.
@trademark
I think you made some good points about alternative energy sources but I think drilling in, say Alaska, would be terrible. But you are complete right in saying that there needs to be different sources.
The comments you said about Iraq, I believe, are totally wrong. For instance, how do you define the troops "finishing the job." The only clear way they can "finish the job" is by quelling popular resistance and installing a puppet government in the Middle East. Regardless there is nothing good about that, in my opinion. Secondly, the idea that Iraq should "pay us back" is beyond ridiculous, and I would say the height of imperial arrogance. The United States supported Saddam while he ravaged the country, then invaded the country when he acted too independently for the US's liking. Then they bombed the country to hell and imposed sanctions on the country that killed over 500,000 children. Then if that wasn't bad enough they proceeded to invade the country again, and this time they have left around maybe 4 million refugees and 1.5 million people dead. And then they should pay US back for this? If Americans had a degree of minimal honesty America would pay them back with massive reparations, and there would be war crimes trials under way soon.
Lastly, it seems everyone is more concerned with their cars, and their gas prices then the horrendous human disaster that has taken place. That isn't directed at everyone but quite a few of you. We really need to reevaluate our values; if cars and gas prices are more important than millions of refugees and millions of deaths what does that really say about us? So I guess biko titled this blog appropriately.
I think that it all comes back to maturity or lack thereof. In general I think some of the black community does care about the war and is very aware. But I also think that there is a large portion of the hiphop community that lacks the general education, maturity, and understanding to really comprehend what's going on with this war and how its going to affect us all for the rest of our lives. It's not just the war that they're not interested in either, it seems that people are so into immediate gratification that they are choosing to ignore so many issues that are vital to their future and their survival.
I care about the war, our troops and the iraqi people. I don't think the initial invasion was a good idea, but now that we're there we can not just bail out. After we have brought so much destruction and chaos to Iraq, we should do what we can to help them. Not that helping them must involve a military presence. As far as gas price goes, people must understand that oil is a non renewable resource, meaning once we run out there is no more oil and it is running out. Prices of gas are going to continue to go up because of the laws of supply and demand. Which is a blessing in disguise, since it will force us to find alternatives and not leave us at the mercy of other countries. It would also benefit the environment.
Also, while I do care about our troops they do keep signing up for this so........
Its funny how some of yall can say yall don't care. In 2006 My Best Friend was killed in a Convoy while i was in the Vehicle behind him, I was also injured. Im from Detroit and Niggas pay attention to whats going on we just got some crab in the barrel ass niggas who think they can make a lifestyle out of thuggin it on here saying stupid shit...Don't speak on this Iraq war if you dont understand what the fuck is really going on, If all you gon say is some dumb shit...You slap in the face every service member killed and injured even those left with the stain of war left on thier minds when they come home.
R.I.P. Vincent
Bet some of yall didn't even know a Petty Officer in the Navy was the 4th recipient of the Medal of Honor for Actions In Iraq yesterday.
And my condolences to everyone of you who the war has taken a toll on
I must echo the sentiments that I'm glad Biko has the cojones to blog on something relevant in a hip hop website. You gotta stand for something or you'll fall for anything.
As far as Iraq . . .certainly I disagree with the war, but things have gotten to a point where an abrupt pull out will simply create a worse situation. I think anyone who gets into office (Democrat that is) will clearly see this. But something has to give becase the American public is tired of paying nearly four dollars for gas, plus having our tax dollars rebuild Iraq. To add insult to injury Saudi's & Iraqis are paying under a dollar for gas and seem to be laughing at us for going into a recession trying claim oil fields that don't belong to us. We literally are going broke trying to kill people who aren't on our economic level?!
i dont give a fuck bout the reasoning behind the war. wat i do care about are the soldiers thas over there helpin that faggot bush get mo money mo money mo money and the innocent people from iraq. i wish there would be a president that would charge that faggot with war crimes, him and that dick of a vice president we got rite now. word up sending condolences to everybody thas been affected directly or indirectly
Did we start this shit or were they already fighting before we got in it? If we started, that should mean if we stop and pull out, it should be over, right?

As for caring about the war I would say NO! as for our men and women being killed left in right over there after the fact hell fucken yeah I care... We was bamboozled into this, first we was on this mission to get Mr. Laden and then the course changed from getting Mr.Laden to trapping up Saddam Hussein. The U.S. government should had dropped everything when the plain went from left field to right field. Our reason for going into Irag was to capture Mr.Laden whom we have forgotten all about. And thats a shame all in its self there. How can our country tell anybody anything when we are not even looking for someone who broke down our door...
I say get the fuck out of Iraq, let them sort it out, if there is an ethnic conflict, then so be it. Nobody seems to care about thye ethnic conflicts in Africa caused by imperialism. And by the way, Kuwait use to be part of iraq, before good old brittain made it its own country so tecnically Saddam Hussein had a right to go get his land back, but we won't go there. But on the real, at this point i could give a shit abot iraq or the middle east. The only reason the terrorist hate us is b/c we try to use the middle east like a chess game. If we get out of their countries, leave them alone and stop giving israel so much damn support then they wouldn't hate us so much. Let them live their lives and let's worry about ourselves. I mean let's take it back , back in the day Iraq attacked Iran, we gave irag weapons and chemical weapons to use on the iranians, now that karma came backto us. Do your reasearch and look into the past and you will see why we are in this bullshit. And for Israel, i'm sorry, if you take land with blood, you will have to keep the land with blood.
we cannot afford this war, they are sending the US into a economic crisis. I care about the innocent iraquis that are dying and the innocent soldiers that are losing their lives and minds, but there isnt much i can do so i dont worry about it.
I'm surprised nobody's said much of anything about caring about the massive number of Iraqis, many of them children, that have died because of this war, and the racist rhetoric in the media that makes the loss of their lives seem to count less than the loss of American lives. I mean, just seems to me another case of little brown kids not counting for shit to the people in charge.
Honsetly where do you guys get these numbers 500K people dead come on if thats the case how are they still picking us soldiers off? They should damn near be extinct. Anyone here know how many U.S. Service members died? or How about have your homie call you from Iraq then a month later he gone & flag for his wife & child? Shit don't talk about other countires kids being killed when we got parents killing their kids here. Child molesters, murderers here but what do we do 3 hots & a cot then say its inhumane to give them lethal injections. But anyways not to sound cruel but we got too much going on here to be feeling sorry for Iraq. Are we keeping score or something cause all I hear is how many innocents we killed. Here is a question if we did not go in Iraq & they decided to strike while we were vunerable whos fault would it be then? Would you say oh Bush should have known this was going to happen or he dont know what hes doing. Honestly for patriots you guys sure do show love in a funny way. I hear alot of people say we sign up for this life knowing what was going to happen but the thing is not everyone can just go to college,be a Dr, lawyer, politician etc.. sometimes this is the only way to go. I read a lot of these blogs and some of you guys make sense but I still don't get it how you just bash the President of the U.S. have some freaking respect you can have your opinion but first try to see a bigger picture than Bush, Gas Price, Oil, Iraq. It's way bigger than that. But anyways think about this the next time you say don't care about the war. When you are at home not caring about the war you have a soldier wondering if he or she is going to see thier family, friends, home again. Someone probably thinking as long as my country is safe I will be fine while they are getting shot at, blown up, executed etc... Remeber they keep you free so not to care is basically saying you don't care if you are free and somewhat safe from foriegn invaders.
Im just sayin that ALL of u that are SO worried about ur precious gas prices, need to think a lil bigger than YOURSELVES,, Like Joe said, alot of us joined the military for the educational benefits among other things, but it seems that our commitment to the U.S. is in vain. Its almost to the point where soldiers are outcasts, for fighting "Bush's War". No, ALOT came in after 9/11 and are fighting for OUR COUNTRY, and all the freedoms that we enjoy. As for the innocent iraqis, what about the innocent Americans, that OUR Govt kills or disregards? But sayin u dont care about the war, u just care about how much gas costs to fill up ur POS car,, Come on,,, Cant be THAT selfish,, But then again, im guessing u are, otherwise u would have joined the military. Bin Laden is doin his business,, he tried to take down economic powers, Knocked down the Towers, now its 6.5 yrs later and the US Economy is spiraling down, And all ya'll care about is GAS,, Get over urself,, and look at the bigger pic,,,,
I care. "What is it good for? Absolutely nuthin'" When these guys get back (and have to go again, they become mental cases. Who wouldn't? Everyday, every hour, minute and second, they risk death. When they come home, they are disrepected by their own country. No treatment for these inevitable mental problems that they will endure. McCain said no way. He should know. He is sane after all that he went through (note sarcasm). He says no more psychology, no more education than what they have. "They won't stay in". Is that why they keep all of the military family killings out of the media. Because these poor guys come back unable to handle this stuff that they are not allowed to talk about, not even to a military psychologist?
Then there is the money issue and the real reason issue. What the hell is really going on here? Wake up because we are not in Africa doing this. Why? They don't have oil. That is not our oil under that sand. We just act like it is. The troops are supporting Obama. Funny thing though, it is not easy for them to vote when they are overseas. Go figure. They have to work to vote as they are supposedly fighting for rights. Whatever, Bush/McCain.
