MLK Week: "America You Are Too Arrogant if You Don't Change Your Ways!"

Posted on March 31, 2008 2:42 PM

April 4th marks the 40th Anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr's death. I personally think that the world would be much better off if both he and Malcolm X would still be here. Not only would we have shining examples of black leaders to look up to , but many of today's "so called Negro leaders" (ha...I've always wanted to use that phrase) would be held to task for their rampant individualism. After all, very few leaders have been able to maintain the moral authority like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.

Everyday this week I will post a blog to commemorate the important work of MLK.

Today's post will focus on what was perhaps one of King's most controversial speeches ever. By 1967 King was beginning to shift his focus away from civil rights issues to the broader themes of the global human rights struggle. He began to speak on such important topics as war, poverty, and international politics. Best believe that MLK was never as passive as our high school history books would have us believe.

In the speech above King calls out America's political leaders for participating in the "unjust" war in Vietnam. Many believe that King was killed because of his anti-war beliefs. Check out the short clip and tell me what you think. If King were alive today he would definitely be in the "gangsta" category.

  • oh ok actually i had this posted on my myspace back in January around the time of his Born Day, this is the one that is said to have gotten him sniped due to his controversial anti-government stances.....

just to be sure, is this the one where he also questioned labor unions as well if i'm not mistaken, i cant view the clip but i'm familliar with more than just his "I have A Dream" Speech (the default for pseudo-revolutionary MLK referencing) .....

  • I couldn't listen to the clip (am @ work) But if King were alive today, the 'gangsta' category probably wouldn't even exist or would have a totally different meaning than what it currently has. I say this because King was an actual LEADER for all people who had the right vision, unselfish motives, and the ability to keep us focused. Indirectly the black man's self esteem died with King. I beleive that King could have shown us how to overcome the overwhelmingly alluring power of material items and kept us focused on building things of real value like self respect, love, and family.

  • I'm sure MLK would be very proud of HipHop's materialsm, glorification of violence and drugs and cusing every other sentence....No disprect to hip hop music whick I do love but to be honest 90% of the hip hop music out there doesn't represent what he stood for....Let The Hate Begin

  • My fav MLK speech of all time, and unfortunately one of the public statements that the CIA used to justify the assasination of MLK. The statements made in these clips still righ true todayw ith our greed and attempt at world domination. But, all faiths have parables warning about how it is evil to "stand idley by" this means that we all have to do our part to make change where we see it's needed.
