A LOT of people hate on Jay Z, but he is one of my favorite MCs...if not my favorite. I know that he has gotten smashed by critics who think he is a materialistic misogynist. No doubt. But I think his story telling skills, word play (he really is the master of the double entendre) and longevity will never again be matched in hip-hop.
My favorite thing about Jay Z is that he isn't afraid to grow. On every record since Reasonable Doubt he has matured as an artist and as a human being. And not to be too much of a stan, but you can't drop songs about your drug addicted pops, the death of your nephew and your fallen friends without having to deal with some personal issues.
Of course, he isn't perfect. We all have to challenge our own personal contradictions and demons. But what other MC of his stature would have enough courage to drop a song like "Minority Report" at the height of their career? Yeah, lots of rappers have dissed George Bush, but few have as much influence and as much to lose as Jigga. You gotta give him props for that.
Hopefully the next generation of MCs won't be afraid to grow either.
*Shouts out to Elizabeth Mendez Berry who I think wrote the most articulate critique of Jay Z ever. She also gave me my first shot to publish in print when she worked at Vibe. Thanks much sis!
I am 100% in agreement on all points. Jiggaman.
Wouldnt you loot if you didnt have the loot? baby needed food and you stuck on the roof?
When Conspiracy Theory and Celebrity Gossip Collide
Is Jay-Z popping champagne and colluding with the Devil? Some folks are convinced he is. Rumors persist that the world's richest rap mogul is part of the secret cult of the Illuminati. Conspiracy theorists describe the Illuminati as an elite cabal of international bankers and industrialists who secretly rule the world while worshiping Lucifer in their dark quest to control our minds. Could Jay-Z have named Rock-a-Fella records after the Rockefellers, one of the major bloodlines of the Illuminati? Hmmm. What about all the secret Illuminati hand gestures Jay-Z flashes in concerts and videos? Even churches are jumping on the bandwagon. In this video, a preacher is shown playing one of Jay-Z's songs backwards during a sermon. His flock looks less than convinced even though Jay-Z can be heard uttering the subliminal satanic message "666 murder murder Jesus". Do any of these rumors hurt Jay-Z's profits? Nope. He just keeps right on popping that champagne and living the good life. Medium: oil on board, photoshop. painting is unfinished.
that's what Jay z is my dude..

Hip hop fans r wack! they hated on Jay for tryin to grow as an artist. they were like "no, no Jay-Z go back to slingin crack on the block like reasonable doubt days!" and the same fans complain about fake gansters and hustlers in hiphop...smh
Its crazy since they built this fake reputation around Jay-Z as the "President of Hip Hop".
I dont wanna get too deep but there is a reason why his hat is usually cocked so much it only reveals his Left Eye and he can stand there without saying a word at a concert and make people throw up "compass and square symbols" with their hands plus call him by a nickname he gave himself which is short for the hewbrew meaning of God. Not forgetting this is done in a very passionate, chanting like manner (almost worshipping a man whose modest shows up on very, very rare occassions).
Some people would claim Im reading way too deep but sometimes the truth hurts and when I recognised these small but very powerful mannerisms in Jay-Z, I had to get rid of his whole catalogue.
I still agree with everything you have posted about Jay-Z and LYRICALLY there is no one around his callibre.
This song almost reminds me of Eminem - Mosh. But in all reality Jay-Z takes a little rapping gesture at the American government and still thinks it is a good idea to walk around with "Skull & Bones" on his T-Shirt.
It isnt any conspiracy theory that the Bush family are in fact high powered members of the Skull & Bones party which is very much sworn to secrecy for reasons you and I will possibly never know. But the last fact I wanted to leave you with was Skull & Bones was used by the Knights Templar a Legion of British Army, (these are people Nas was talking about in I CAN who 'stole all the Gold, teachings and everything sacred') as a sign of peace when really they were going into other countries to rape, steal and change the whole culture.
....and thats what Jay-Z 'reps' on his Roc-a-wear Tee's.
Before You Curse Out My Post Go and Research Everything I Spoke About.
props for that, one of his best songs!
jay-z has always been a conscious rapper - - his "conscious" talks more about the consciousness of the human mind when materialism is the order of your world - how to survive and dreams of someone who wants to come up
every album always has psychological gems in it dealing with the way people work and think
no chomping on planters, just telling my truth
Gay-Z needs to stop being B*tch made
If he's gonna be a president ceo or whatever of a record label and the MC puts in a lot of work. Don't F*uck him over and use him. If this doesn't get posted. That means who ever is running this blogg is a big time Jay-Z D*ick rider who's feelings get hurt cause their LL favorite rapper gets exposed.
See I will never understand when someone posts their opinion on a song like CNN these kids start talking about Jay-Z life. I don't care if he fucked over ya favorite rapper get over it and stop crying its business it happens daily are you going to bitch for me cuz my boss took credit for what I did at work 2day? Na? Then shut the fuck up. And have an opinion on his song or songs. But don't be girl and worry bout the mans real life
I liked the song when I first heard it. Surprised it was overlooked like it was. But you and I know that its like how it is with the Yankees and the Lakers in their prime. Can't beat em hate em. I find it funny becuz little do they realize the more you hate the more inspiration one gets to suceed. Every competitor needs opposition, so thank you guys for keeping my fav rapper on his toes his music is a result of your hate. So keep hating hey if you want you can hate me I aint as sucessful but I got a skull on my T-shirt lol.
Jay-Z is one of the best rappers alive. In my book, he's number two. But, lyrically, story telling wise, conciousness wise, he's not nicer than Nasir Jones. He knows it, and if u are a hip-hop dude for real, then u know that too. Jay's best rhymes on an album are on Reasonable Doubt. When that first dropped, he was just another rapper. I liked Reasonable Doubt, but it did not do anything to hip-hop like Illmatic did. And, it wasn't even the hottest album of the time. Now, if u talk popularity and songs that people can party to, Jay will get the nod over Nas. But, Jay is not a conscious rapper. He just started gettin deeper in his rhymes lately, as he has gotten older. On Reasonable Doubt he dealt with the mind of a hustler. On certain songs after that, he may give u a couple of songs that may make u think, but he's mostly raps about what any other rapper right now raps about, money, hoes and clothes. He's just the best at rapping about those subjects. MC's have to respect his lyrical ability. But, he's not a conscious rapper. U can't be serious!!!

jay has been able to grow with every album, but he has also been able to sell records. i think thats what makes him a beast in this game, its the fact that he can make an album that people critize and hate (kingdom come) and still go platinum. people didnt like the album because he tried something different. on the other hand people are hipocrits because fans wanted him talkin about the streets and he came up with a way to to do it and not seem corny. (american gangters). he's a smart dude, he knows how to stay relevent. lyrically he is a monster, people just love to hate on the nigga cause he still on top.
Grow??? are we talkin bout the same nigga that made songs about nas' baby moms?
Are we talkin bout the same dude who, after failing on kingdom come, went directly back to coke rhymes?
Are we talkin bout the same dude that's selling out his hood as we speak?
Greatest Rapper? only if you just started listening to rap.
Actually, he may be the best club song rapper ever, but best rapper...be serious!
Nas' catelogue is far more surperior, so is ice cube's, scarface's, and numerous other rappers.
***Dezzy's post has been Quoted For Truth***
@ Detriot.

I was enjoying reading everyones thoughtful posts and then I got to your post.
#
Its funny because you say "Grow?" and then go on to show exactly how he grew.
#
Then you say he went back to coke rhymes, but listen to the lyrics in that album man. Its incredible.
#
Here is a sample:
"Said where i would stop before i even started
When i get to one brick, then The Game i will depart with
Got to one brick then i looked to the sky, said
Sorry God, i lied, but give me one more try
Got to two bricks, new cars, new whips
But niggas never learn til' they end up in the newsclip
The irony of selling drugs is sort of like i'm using it
Guess its two sides to what 'substance abuse' is "
--Yea it seems like a song about drug dealing but the message is much deeper.
#
Here is another:
#
"We ain't thugs for the sake of just being thugs
Nobody do dat where we grew at, nigga, DUH!
The poverty line, we not above
So out come the mask and glove cause we ain't feelin' the
We ain't doing crime for the sake of doing crime
We movin' dimes cause we ain't doin' fine
One out of three of us is locked up doing time
You know what that type of shit can do to a nigga mind? "
---
Now the most amazing part is Jay can throw in these messages while still making people think its "gangster" add that to the club songs he can make along with the beats he can flow over (listen to the song american gangster, that beat is crazy) and of course he throws in bits of his own life and the classic rap boastin and bragging.
--
I aint dick ridin, im just pointing out that if you actually read what he is saying, its pretty impressive.
--
Lastly, he isnt killing his own hood with the NETs deal. people always wanna hate but if the team does get moved there, your gonna see many jobs created and hopefully the renovation of that part of town, which is a good thing.
@ the truth....
I respectfully disagree with your opinion.
1. the only reason jay-z is a part of nets ownership is to soften the blow of them destroying his hood. On the real, do you think they came up with 99% of the bread, but just couldn't find the extra 1%?
2. Do you think they said "you know, jay-z is a great rapper, maybe he should join our investment group? Hell naw.
3. they're gonna displace thousands of people to employ hundreds! that's not cool. I live in detroit, they built a football stadium and a baseball stadium across the street from our biggest project....do you think the people who live in that project have seen a huge increase in job security? HELL NO!
3. This guy has shitted on everyone that has been down with him to this point, but you think he cares about his hood? What has he done for his hood up to this point? Cool herc is raising money to save the birthplace of hip hop, he needs 5 mil...you think jay chipped in? HELL NO!
Being a conscious is not a part time job, ask mos def or david banner!
Lastly,
is jay better than andre 3000 lyrically? consciously?
What about Prodigy, Nas, or Scarface.
Jay is not even original, all he does is hire the hot producer at the time, and touch up what someone else has already done! Improve on someone elses' bluprint!
Detroit feels like a hater...
this jay-z thing is 2 complex, i mean im not gonna front he is top 10 but when people be sayin he number 1 just gets to me, i can name u 2 rappers off the top of my head who r lyrically better, biggie and nas, and i can name like 20 more who r more conscious, listen, jay z might of made a conscious song at the height of his career, but he didnt make his career from it, im not sayin nas and 2pacs career was made from them but what is 2pac known as now and what will nas be known as when he dies? jay-z will be known as a sick rapper just like biggie and big L when he dies. Now greatest rapper of all time, i swear if a person hears another sayin it 2 much they start to belive in it
@detriot:
We are on a bit of a tanget with sports teams comin into the hood and such but all you gotta do is look at the inner harbor in bmore and see what has happened with the O's and ravens. The inner harbor was trash and now it is maybe the best place in baltimore.
#
I aint every say Jay was the most conscience rapper. I simply said if you read what he writes it is deep and tricky. Most people dont pick up on it. Just like the quote form fallin i sent ya. Its true man, people do bad shit all the time, and they never learn till they get caught, regardless of what it is.
--
Jay has the ablility to spit double and triple meanings while still flowing like a hit song. He has said he is not as good as talib or common but yet he still infuses ideas into his music without losing his hit making power. There is even a quote in "The bounce" where he talks about his hit records and some things he says are to make money, but if you listen to everything...
--
As far as him shitting on everyone, that simply isnt true. His boy from the start was bleek and bleek has paper and has sold records, strictly because of jay-z. Dj clue had platinumn records and made a bigger name for himself under jay. Dame is caked up and im not saying its all jay, but what has dame done with similiar sucess without Jay....When was the last time killa went plat?
--
But here is another quote from a jay-z song where he even talks about it, first about the roc break up, then about making mistakes:
-
"And the the Roc break up had people losing hope
Can't lie they had Muhammed Hovi, on the ropes
Now I'm back in the go mode, back in the go-gos'
Throwing the diamond up repping the logo, rose gold, rose flow
I'm ok though, what don't kill me makes me stronger than before so"
-
so if y'all hear my plight
and if you think you can make it this far without a fight
couple mistakes here and there
not always right
but I'm always real
thats how i sleep at night
-
Seriously, you can read AG like its a novel, but if you only listen to it, you think its all about dealing drugs, yet there is so much more to it.
He definitely is not a conscious rapper. He is a misogynistic, materialistic rapper. Doesn't do songs that can portray a positive, uplifting image to the youth.
Of course Jay is conscious in truth a bunch of rappers are. Being conscious is being aware and its sounds like hes pretty damn aware in his music. He doesnt fall into the perception of a conscious rapper like mos def or nas, but hes always talking about things that are going on, is he not? You probably cant say there hasnt been a bunch of times when you connected with Jay and you knew exactly what he was talking about. Its not like Jay is pullin the soulja boy bs and yellin random stuff over a track, he is connecting with his audience. Isnt that being conscious? He talks about real things. But as for him being courageous for speaking out against Bush, what makes that courageous? Whats he gonna lose if he says F*** Bush? Nothing is the answer, Jay isnt breaking the law. I mean damn near all the country says it look at the approval ratings. If you feel the need to express your opinion do it! were not in Nazi Germany where SS police would beat you to death for criticizing the government. The government is a government of the people and thats why it goes through changes and modifications, politicians are theoretically supposed to represent the population and when they dont then the population needs to let representatives know that. And for moresickaMC although the point about Jay calling himself God was interesting and I had never thought about it like that, but I think you read too much into the Skull and Bones membership. Austan Goolsbee was is a skull and bones member and hes Barak Obama's economic advisor. Im just saying im not telling you youre wrong cuz i dont know but maybe you think to much of the skull and bones. plus there are high powered people that didnt go to yale or were a part of skull and bones i mean Cheney the vice prez didnt go to yale and hes very much in power? if youve got an answer i would be happy to openly minded read it and maybe even agree.
@Realone
-
Did you read anything that i have quoted in this thread or even listen to the song that the blogger posted.
Comon man, you can do better
@ detroit
i know what you sayin about the football and baseball stadium not securing more jobs. you say they tore down the projects it was probably for the best all ni99as do up there is kill each other and its a shame. thats why i left.
dis was one of fav tracks off da album........i didnt know they made a vid for it though.....prob cuz i dont watch tv like dat no more.
but in my opinion nobody is better then scarface. even on their collabos Face outshined jay in my book. but da nigga is in my top 10
Jay-Z, is he a conscious rapper? That is the question and this is my answer or opinion whatever you perceive it to be. Of course Jay-Z is a conscious rapper no matter what his conscious wants him to portray whether its coke, women, brooklyn it dont matter. These rhymes and stories are coming from where? It comes from his conscious and mind. Every rapper is a conscious rapper to some extent. Certain rappers have certain subject matter in their conscious so if it is in there conscious and expresses what desires their conscious, bothers their conscious, gives them premonition or past experience of their conscious then what is he a conscious rapper.
@Detroit Yeah I agree with you Andre 3000 / outkast had more conscious and innovative songs on their albums and they sold very well. Andre 3000 is a good rapper lyrically.
Hov is a great mc, but he went from Reasonable doubt to Blueprint to Kingdom Come. How the fuck did that happen?! Its called sellin out bitches!!!
I think people get it all twisted. A'int nobody perfect. To be a conscious rapper every song don't have to gospel or positive. To me it's all about balancement. Just talk about life which is filled with positive and negative experiences. Days when you get paper, days when you broke. As long as you doing that you a "real" rapper if not a conscious rapper. Lot of things to admire about Jay, entrepreneurship, ability to take dirty money legit, maximizing all the opportunities that come his way and their are some negative attributes too. But once again, no one is perfect...
