Talib Kweli: I Love Hip-Hop

The last four songs on Eardrum, which is in stores August 21st are "Hot Thing"/Beauty, Perfect Beat"/Hip Hop, "My Stars"/Hope and "Listen"/Power.

I write hip hop love songs because I love hip hop. I love it's potential for tribute. I grew up around strong beautiful women, so I am not ashamed to celebrate that BEAUTY. I think that is what a real man does. Not that there aren't foul women out there, but they have an abundance of songs to choose from. The good women have to search for their songs. Beauty is my favorite thing to write about because you can never run out of ways to describe it. If you think that's soft, you're probably lonely.

Track 14 is "Perfect Beat"/Hip-Hop. KRS got folks heated when he said "I am hip hop". He was the best MC of his day, and he had hit after hit. He was respected in the streets, the club and the classroom. What people didn't understand was that he was fully embracing the culture, in the same way everybody said "I am Malcolm X" at the end of that Spike Lee film.

I knew Kris already from touring, but after the Hip Hop Honors show where I paid tribute to Rakim, we exchanged numbers and he came by the lab. We wrote the Perfect Beat standing side by side in the vocal booth, spitting our verses as soon as we wrote them. KRS spit his and said, "OK, your turn". That's hip hop!

The next song is "My Stars" or Hope. My son and my daughter are my biggest inspirations for doing this music for a living. When I found out I was having a son, I put my all into my craft. When I found out my daughter was on the way, I put my all into my business. My son is writing his rhymes now, but I don't wanna hear not one bar if them grades ain't right. My daughter looks up to her brother, but she keeps an executive air about her.

They are my future.

My POWER comes from getting people to listen. Listen to the sounds around you, listen to your heart, listen to the news, listen to the noise, listen to the silence. When you listen you understand how powerful music can be. It is our natural resource.
