Consequence: His name is "The Cons"

Welcome to Consequence’s GuestStar Blog Entries. Shout out to SOHH for giving me an opportunity to talk to my fans and potential new ones. If you don’t know, “Don’t Quit Your DayJob” is in stores right NOW!!!

In this blog entry I wanted to explain who the “little black & white” character you may have seen in the “Callin Me” video is. That’s my logo and his name is “The Cons”. He has also had the distinct pleasure of gracing my album cover. (Just think I waited 10 years to drop my solo LP and instead of people seeing my face I get replaced by some little black’n’white guy with a crown on his head! Lol)

cons-and-the-cons.jpg

For all you new artist I’ma put you onto game real quick. When you’re signed to a major label writing ill rhymes is just the tip of the iceberg. In today’s Rap Market there’s so much more. Each department of a label needs to be able to categorize you in order to figure out who there selling your record to. If they can’t figure it out and you don’t show them a clear, INEXPENSIVE path to do so then YOU WILL BE SHELVED!!! NO BULLS#!T. It took me a minute to figure this out because for the 1st six months of my deal at Sony I was touring. So I thought in theory I was doing the right thing being in front of people performing but I wasn’t setting up my brand being on tour because it was Kanye’s tour NOT mine. When I finally got off the road I was a little behind the 8-Ball in terms of my project . So for me part of playing catch up was coming up with a logo.

Early%20Cons%20Sketches.jpg

At times it was frustrating because everything that was being submitted made me question if the artist was trying to connect with ME or the movement I was a part of. I would get goofy shit like a silhouette of me with “stunna” shades on. I’m into clothes and s#!t but they don’t represent me or my artistry as a whole . Then there was the “C” logo that looked like a copyright symbol. Then Don C (Kanye’s Road Manager) met a guy in the U.K. named Mario Charles who is actually pretty good . We came up with something I liked but Kanye & Don hated. Then about August 2006 Kanye & Susan Linss were at a Flea Market where they met a guy named Jean Labourdette. Ye saw some of his sketches and suggested that we connect. I met up with Jean over at Sony Studio and he began to sketch what he thought should be “The Cons”. I was instantly sold on his ideas.

As time went on we began to develop the sketches into what would be the actual character. I wanted him to have an attitude as if it was him against the world. You see me I have to have a “poker” face at all times being an artist but “The Cons” expressions could be how I feel inside about a lot of shit. That’s why when it came time to do the album packaging we decided to put “The Cons” on the cover. For people who didn’t know me they’d see the cover and be like who is this (Is it Rap,Rock,Alternative). For those who did know me the packaging was just DOPE!!! Shout out to Jean Labourdette for coming up with the illustrations, Nabil Elderstein for the packaging shoot and Chris Feldmann for helping me execute the album packaging. Hey I see you guys aren’t shy about leaving comments so let know what you think. (Watch how many art critics this brings out the woodworks Lol)

  • Well, here's art critic #1

I like the design because it's simple (elegant) and expressive. It's not pretentious, it doesn't try to be something it's not. It's a distilled character (or caricature?) that wastes no time or line work to communicate with the viewer. Raw and direct.

So from an Illustration standpoint, it's a complete success: It's clear, easily understandable, and has a clear, direct conversation with the viewer even at first glance, without wasting any time. In my opinion, a great vehicle for an artist to express his thoughts, feelings, mind-state, or emotions.

Keep it up for all us independent artists and thinkers out there, Cons. We're just trying to quit our day jobs too.

admit it Black America, there is no place in our communities for conscious music anymore. WHY? Because we do not even have a conscience for ourselves. We believe that if someone commits a crime against anyone, we should remain silent because to report a criminal is snitching. We are so "hungry" to spend our capital on rap/trash music when an artist rapes, mugs, stab, shoot or kill someone. We in the Black Community call it "street credibility". These two brothers had low record sales not because of poor promotion. It was because of (in the word of The Honorable Louis Farakhan), we have no sense of self anymore. The only way conscious artists will sell records to Black America, they have to include Bitches, Hoes, and Niggas in their lyrics like Jay-Z, Luda, Jeezy, TI and 50 cent. It is a hard pill to swallow, but again, the truth hurts.

  • @spade

This is one of the few times I have read an intelligent post that I can embrace. This post should start a dialogue throughout Black America-colleges, churches, schools etc. It is very true. Black America only supports music with Niggas, Hoes and Bitches in them. That what we buy. How is this an expression of Black Culture? How? EVERYONE SHOULD COPY AND PASTE SPADE'S COMMENTS ON THEIR E-MAIL AND SEND IT TO A FAMILY MEMBER, FRIEND, CO-WORKER, CHURCH EVERYBODY. WE NEED TO START LOOKING AT HOW WE ARE DESTROYING THE BLACK COMMUNITY.

  • What's destroying the black community is CHILDREN GROWING UP WITHOUT FATHERS......AND LAZY ASS PARENTS AS A WHOLE......

I had a both parents, and i jammed every piece of explicit content that came out from NWA to Bust Down.....THAT DIDN'T MAKE ME ROB, SHOOT OR KILL ANYONE....IT DIDN'T MAKE ME HATE THE POLICE....IT DIDN'T MAKE ME HATE WOMEN.....

I WENT ON TO GET DEGREE AND WORK USING IT AND GET PAID VERY WELL FOR IT.......STOP THE DUMB ASS EXCUSES

WE TOO CAUGHT UP WITH WORDS RIGHT NOW WHEN THERE ARE BIGGER ISSUES THAT TEAR AT THE FABRIC OF OUR COMMUNITIES....

  • All of what ya are saying is true for instance evry1 is a big lil wayne fan why becuz in his lyrics he uses a lot of serious methaphors that degrade women degrade gays and he uses his cockyness as a spring board 2 to his lyrics my favorite rappers in the game right now are Lupe Fiasco and Nas as well as Consequence 4 the simple fact that I can relate to everythng they rap about such as lupe his song "he say she say" I grew up without my father and with the fact that my moms had to help whn really my father should. Consequence is one of my fav's bcuz he raps about not ever bein givin a chance and how whn he came up evry1 wanted things frm him they had they hand out in the track called "Don't forget em" but it is what it is....

  • Yo Consequence artwork was cool. It was a nice lil symbol for him. And both of those statements were correct, but trust me there are plenty of lil kids now (18 and under) who keep repeating what they hear on the records. Combined with the whack parents you are not going to get much out of them. Parents need to take more responsibility and TRASH rappers LIKE SCOTTIE PIMPIN's group need to go. White America and the Suburbs control rap. They dont wanna hear "real" music, they wanna hear about booty shaking and big thangs poppin. Consequence is one of the dudes who actually raps about something different but White America hates them because they dont wanna hear anything close to black power. Also you gotta admit it, downloading and ITUNES screwed rap up. AFrican Americans download more than any other race in the America because we dont have the funds to buy the music

  • Although we're straying off topic... Yes, it is a shame to see one of my favorite MCs (Cons) making such pitiful numbers in comparison to the redundant, copycat, fake ish out there... That being said, I'm an old fart that grew up with the Native Tongues, PE, Beasties etc... But I embraced and respected NWA, BIG, Jay, Nas etc...

Tribe, De La, Cons, Nas... They all rap about what they see and know in the streets... Difference is they do it with class and within an art form, which is the difference between hip hop and rap. It started out rap, evolved to hip hop (culture) and is now regressing to straight rap and copycat crap.

Anyway, logo is simple yet introspective, nice work. Album is tight as hell. Keep up the good work.
