It is OBVIOUS that you are too young (or STUPID)to remember the reality of what it was like for the South in the early to mid nineties. You were either West Coast, East Coast or Luke. ANYTHING done down south was 'booty' music, and did not get any promo, respect, or airplay nationally, regionally, and BARELY any locally.
Then came the Geto Boys and (shortly thereafter) UGK. The Geto Boys couldn't even keep their P&D deals, much less get airplay. But they perservered, succeeded, fell apart, and the last man standing is Face. NONE of the rest of the GB is packing major stacks BUT him.
But, when UGK grinded & served up The Southern Way they created the STANDARD for Southern acts to follow. "Do it indy, as long as you can- then PARTNER with the label to expand your opportunities." But THEY learned it the HARD WAY, and taught others from their own experience.
To say that Outkast, Goodie Mob, Pastor Troy, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slimm Thug, Flip and the rest of them would have still made the type of money that they are making now without a UGK is bullshit. They have ALL learned from the struggle and example of UGK.
If money is what makes you a legend, then a MAJORITY of the "legends" since black music stopped being called 'race music' are NOT legends. They were robbed of their legacy by idiots like you who believe that the physical representation of wealth and affluence (instead of INFLUENCE) is the key to immortality.
But, son you're wrong... the INFLUENCE of UGK will even live longer than their music (which is infinite). Their music is just an invitation to explore the impact these two men have had on not just a nation, but the world.
Without UGK, there would not have been a No Limit, Cash Money, Swisha House, Ice Age, Purple Ribbon, BME, Grand Hustle, DTP, etc. Because before THEM there was NO Southern HipHop Market. PERIOD. It was ONLY East or West, and to be from down South wasn't happening.
UGK(& the GB) CREATED the Southern market. No if's, and's, or but's about it. There was NO interest in signing Southern acts until they came along. When the bidding war to sign UGK began, the interest in THEM created the need for other labels to have their own Southern acts.
So, if you are still wondering what that means- go back and read it again. And hopefully, with your understanding- you shall gain wisdom.
