Album Review: La Bella Mafia
The next album we will we reviewing is Kim's third effort, "La Bella Mafia". This was a highly anticipated release from Kim to not only Kim's fans, but the industry as whole after what was widely considered a let down with "The Notorious KIM". For the most part, the streets and the industry was impressed. Lil' Kim went back to her roots, so to speak, and got back in touch with the streets.
Kim teased us prior to release with the radio friendly 'What's The Word' (which ultimately was left as an international bonus track) and 'Get In Touch With Us', which made fans feel she was giving them exactly what they were asking for. The later track boasted an appearance from Styles P and both became instant buzz songs. 'Get In Touch With Us' did make the album.
There were a few tracks that did not make the final cut, however. Kim bragged about an appearance from The Notorious B.I.G. on this record, however due to a falling out with Voletta Wallace it had to removed at the last moment. The song was titled 'Back Together' and featured unreleased Biggie verses. Other unreleased tracks include Knock Em Out The Box featuring Method Man, which was basically a remake of Dreams, and Flow So Sick, featuring Ice Drake.
Kim maintained her street flow on the songs 'Hold It Now', 'Doing It Way Big' and 'This Is Who I Am'. None of these songs stood out too far above the rest, but did show Kim's hunger in her music once again. Exemplary tracks 'Thug Luv' and 'Tha Beehive' definitely stood out. In 'Thug Luv', Kim adopted the speedy flow and was accompanied by Twista. 'Tha Beehive' is the obligatory posse cut featuring Tha Beehive and the Gotti Kids. Kim's lyrics on this track are rawer than heard in recent years and definitely shows that she is still that bitch.
The album falters when Kim attempts to make radio friendly songs. 'Can't F**k with Queen Bee', although explicit in title, is not very in actuality and is one of the weaker songs on the CD. 'Shake Ya Bum Bum' features the real Lil' Shanice and is possible the worst track on the CD. Kim attempts to make the song geared more towards children, which is not her primary target.
Other tracks include Kim's first attempt at singing an entire song in 'This Is A Warning' (a remake of Woman's Threat by R. Kelly). Although Kim's singing voice is not horrible, it would have been wiser to hold this track over until she had a little more practice. 'Heavenly Father' and 'Came Back for You' are Kim's diss tracks, the former Junior Mafia and the later to Eve. A video was shot for 'Came Back For You' it was never formally released to the public until very recently via a limited edition DVD.
The remaining songs were either singles or considered for singles. 'The Jump Off' was Kim's lead single and only video released. The song was very radio friendly and produced a line (think Sprite) and dance that will follow Kims career for some time, it's most likely the biggest hit of her career thusfar. Two other songs were released to radio, but no video was filmed, these were '(When Kim Say) Can You Hear Me Now?' and 'Magic Stick'. It is not know why a video was not shot for 'Hear Me Now' but we quite publically know why there was none for 'Stick'. 50 dissed our girl and the rest is history.
All in all, this was a very good album, not a career defining release, but one worth praise. I would give it a 3/5, maybe 4 if 'Shake You Bum Bum' never saw the light of day.

I thought this was a creative album! I always purchase Lil kims albums. I loved the movie La Bella Mafia but this was a bad album. It would be nice if she worked with other female rappers. She was sexy, back when she was black! Sorry things didn't work out wit Junior Mafia cause when they were around her work was better. Foxy might be deaf, But she can rap! and on the level that dudes rap! Biggie and Scott Storch is ugly, what exactly did she find attractive about them?
