Freeway Ricky Ross

Once again it's on! Greg "Gate$" Davenport is live and in the flesh and this time I've got a trill exclusive for you.

"Freeway" Ricky Ross (THE REAL RICKY ROSS), one of the most famous street figures in all of America, decided to grant me an exclusive interview. This guy gave me 15 minutes of his precious phone time while locked up in a federal prison in Texarkana, Texas; which is truly a sacrifice for him since he barely gets more than 2 hours of phone time for an entire month.

Not to glamorize what he's done, but Ross is to crack, what George Jung ("Boston George") was to cocaine.

He wants to set the record straight on his legacy, rappers using his name, Miami rapper Rick Ross being a correctional officer, his thoughts on the hip-hop game today and his future plans.

Here's Part 1 of the two-part interview.

Part 2 coming soon!

As of late, all I've been hearing is how Texas just fell off the face of the hip-hop map. But in the Big State's defense I think it's just the lack of hype and the failed experiment to commercialize a subculture within hip-hop (screw music) that has the majors looking elsewhere for the next big thing to exploit.

This development is actually a blessing in disguise because I think it will:

    1. Bring Texas artists who are creative/serious about their craft back to the forefront

    2. Force Texas artists to once again grind and quit intentionally trying to make records that will please both radio and music executives who don't have a clue and don't care about what the Texas scene is about artistically.

One of the artists capitalizing off the major's defection back North is a veteran by the name of Money. Originally from Missouri City, Texas, Money is best known for his team, Million Dollar Click, and being affiliated with the famed Wreck Shop Records camp.

After taking a government-sponsored vacation for the past three years, Money immediately started feeding the Texas underground scene's thirst for quality street music with a Street Pharmacy-helmed mixtape titled "Smells Like Money."

In addition to his mixtape flooding the streets, Money's single featuring Trae and Chalie Boy, "In My Own Lane" is spreading like a virus throughout the state.
