Since Florida got so much going on right now I figure I'll just send a tribute out there to one of the Dirty South pioneers. Before there was Uncle Luke there was Uncle Al. Albert Moss known to the world as Uncle Al was known for being one of the first if not the first to speed up the music Miami style.
For those of you that wonder why does Khalid or any other Florida djs keeps yelling across the record, it has nothing to do with trying to shine. It's just a style that is a permanent fixture in the Florida scene.
Al was murdered on Sept. 10, 2001. This is why a lot of you didn't hear about it because it was too close to 9-11 and the news waves were jammed up with that. But his legacy rolls on with perhaps his greatest accomplishment. "The Uncle Al Peace In The Hood Festival" is an annual hip-hop family day that was started by Al as a free show to promote non-violence and unity in the hood as well as the industry. He was down with Slip-n-Slide, which just shows how deep the Slip-n-Slide imprint is when it comes to Florida hip-hop history. He also was one of the first people to push the Underground Radio stations to the next level, which still is a staple in Florida.
So the next time you hear Khalid scream "We the Best" just know that Uncle Al is included in that. He ran with the Sugarhill DJs. DJ Crunch 1 still holds it down on the underground in Miami. Here are a couple of videos to jog your memory. And here is a myspace page dedicated to him also.

Uncle Al was killed by a Jamaican boy who though Uncle Al had deliberately took the airwaves from his under ground radio station. Uncle was a pioneer in Under ground stations in Miami. The Jamaican had a station in Fort lauderdale. Uncle Al did not even no this boy. The clown just wanted to shoot someone. But he is serving life so he got his. Chump.Uncle Al was the energy of MIami. His music made you dance. Period. If you hear his music your body just started shaking. You could'nt help it. God was with uncle Al.
Slide to the side, y'all. Oh! My go-oood!
Uncle Al was a legend. Looka me in '91, '92 going to score blow form Formula and I'm Peepin' while Sugarhill got the whole block shut down! One leg up! Turn around wit' it.
R.I.P. Uncle Al. I still remember that day. Still can't believe it.
